Cover Story: Onchocerciasis, or river blindness, is a neglected tropical disease targeted for elimination by the WHO, with over 99% of cases in sub-Saharan Africa. This study systematically reviewed the impact of control measures against this disease. Based on 63 selected studies from 19 endemic countries, community-based distribution of ivermectin (CDTI) was the primary intervention. The results show that 11 countries have interrupted transmission in some areas, thanks to CDTI or mixed methods (mainly large-scale larvicide together with CDTI), while others face ongoing challenges, including resurgence. While interventions have shown positive impacts, they are insufficient to fully achieve WHO’s 2030 targets, highlighting the need for comprehensive, sustained efforts. View this paper
