Cover Story: The assessment of aging dams constitutes a challenge for the whole dam engineering community. It requires reliable numerical methods and procedures to both derive the root causes of cracking and to obtain accurate predictions of the extent of damage, which together constitute the first step toward assessing the current structural safety and the need for strengthening. In this paper, the results from the 14th ICOLD Benchmark Workshop are presented, where 16 teams predicted crack patterns and deformations of an arch dam subjected to significant seasonal temperature variations. As a result, several recommendations for best practices have been formulated. These results and conclusions represent an important step in achieving increased knowledge of the dam safety of existing structures as well as a better understanding of potential failure modes and the aging of concrete dams.View this paper.
