Cover Story: Pushing and pulling manually propelled wheeled equipment in workplaces is associated with musculoskeletal disorders, which can unfortunately lead to disability. Pushing and pulling forces are especially dependent on the type of wheels fitted onto equipment on the one hand and on the floor on which the wheels move on the other. While manually propelled wheeled equipment design standards require measurements of pushing forces for evaluating their maximal load capacities, the methods described—using a steel plate—do not take into account the real conditions of work. Therefore, resistive forces must be evaluated considering the influence of the load, the combination of the types of wheels, and floors; other parameters linked to both equipment and human experimenter must also be eliminated.
