Cover Story: An assessment of different imaging artifacts in quantitative neutron transmission imaging of hydrogenous steel specimens is performed. The contribution of scattered neutrons to the total detected intensity is dependent on the sample–detector distance and the scattering behavior of the sample material. It can be reduced by either using the full detector area for imaging or by shielding the unused detector areas from neutrons with nontransparent material. This also reduces the backlight effect in the scintillator. Varying sample–detector distances allow the transmitted intensity to be separated from the scattered intensity by fitting an appropriate distance law. Refraction of neutrons on smooth surfaces can be avoided by exact alignment of the sample parallel to the incoming beam. View this paper
