Cover Story: This work assesses the validity of established semi-empirical correlations for natural convection heat sink design for a wide range of flow and operating conditions, with the upper limits of the Grashof number and Elenbaas number being 1.6 × 1011 and 3.4 × 107, respectively. Different computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models (e.g., laminar, transition-SST, k-ω SST, and k-ϵ) were evaluated. Two-dimensional CFD simulations can accurately predict laminar conditions, but only quasi-3D CFD simulations accurately capture turbulent conditions. The γ-Reθ transition SST model performed best in those conditions. A new non-dimensional group was introduced for regime identification based on the Elenbaas number. Future work will consider large eddy simulation (LES) to better understand the influence of turbulent flow conditions occurring in real-world natural convection cooling applications. View this paper

Many designs for natural-convection heat sinks and semi-empirical correlations have been proposed in the recent years, but they are only valid in a limited range of Elenbaas numbers El and were mostly tested for laminar flows. To alleviate those limi...
