Cover Story: A growing mycelium of Podospora anserina shows on the left a degenerating sector caused by the “crippled growth” epigenetic phenomenon. Fungal cultures often display phenotypic instability caused by epigenetic phenomena. Through classical molecular genetic analysis, we identify new genes involved in the control of “crippled growth” and further define the complex prion-like genetic element that is responsible for cell degeneration in P. anserina, an excellent model system for the study of instability.
