Cover Story: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused negative disruptions in the lives of students, particularly in academic performance and mental health. Therefore, we evaluated the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among Portuguese higher education students during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, and investigated DASS-21's psychometric characteristics as well as whether it functions effectively during a pandemic. We recruited 1522 participants. The results revealed a considerable prevalence of depression (28.5%), anxiety (36.2%), and stress (35.7%). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed the scale's three-factor structure, which matched the three DASS-21 subscales. DASS-21 was also shown to be a valid measure for assessing students' mental health and may apply to other emergencies. View this paper
