Cover Story: In the oscillatory regime, inverse methods are required to unveil the time course of the synaptic conductance gsyn(t). We propose a three-step strategy: (1) fit data of a measurable quantity (e.g., the membrane potential v(t)) to a reference model, (2) approximate the period–conductance relationship (T–g curve) associated to the model, and (3) for each interspike time period, estimate gsyn from the T–g curve.
