Cover Story: Mining-induced land transformations have significant environmental impacts, yet they remain poorly understood. This study analyzes 15 open-pit copper mines in Chile using satellite imagery, GIS, and production data to assess land transformation. Findings show that waste storage facilities occupy the largest proportion of transformed land (>50%), highlighting the need for better waste management. Land transformation factors vary widely (0.006178–0.372798 m²/kg-Cu), exposing limitations in traditional life cycle assessment (LCA) methods. This research underscores the importance of geospatial analysis in evaluating mining’s environmental footprint and calls for increased transparency through GIS data disclosure. View this paper
