Cover Story: The diagram summarises the current understanding of thin film CdTe in terms of their XRD patterns, grain orientations and their effects on efficiency of CdS/CdTe solar cells. During low-temperature growth of CdTe on FTO surfaces, small grains (~20–60 nm) are formed with (111) preferred orientation. During heat-treatment with CdCl2, grain boundaries melt at 385±5°C, grains become randomly oriented, forms large grains of microns size, returning back to the (111) preferred orientation. Approximate efficiency variations are also shown with these structural changes. View this paper.
