Cover Story: In an era dominated by human-generated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions driving global climate change, posing threats to human and planetary health, addressing the healthcare industry's environmental impact is crucial. Accounting for 8.5% of US carbon emissions, healthcare's role in reduction is pivotal. This article explores a pioneering project at a midwestern academic medical center (MAMC) establishing a GHG measurement and tracking program. Employing a Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle and Quality Improvement methodology, it develops, implements, and assesses a standardized GHG emission inventory process, measuring Scope 1 and Scope 2 baseline emissions. This work demonstrates obtaining baseline GHG data feasibility in large medical centers, initiating broader carbon reduction and climate action plans in the healthcare system. View this paper
