Cover Story: This paper presents the results of a molecular surveillance study monitoring amdoparvoviruses and protoparvoviruses circulating in mustelids of insular British Columbia, Canada. By combining molecular epidemiology, genomic sequencing, phylogenetic analyses, and the study of host ecology, it was possible to clarify virus–host interaction dynamics and cross-species transmission patterns. We determined how hosts enable pathogen persistence and identified which hosts, among epidemiologically connected and susceptible populations, are crucial for this persistence and which are dead-end spillover hosts. In this multi-host system, viral and host factors affect viral persistence and distribution, shaping parvoviral ecology and evolution, with implications for insular carnivore conservation.
