Cover Story: Family breakdown, separation, and divorce (FBSD) can have profound impacts on the mental health, identity, and relationships of fathers. This study explores how fathers navigate FBSD, including post-separation abuse, alienating behaviours, and the challenges of co-parenting and legal systems. Drawing on survey data from 141 fathers and in-depth interviews with 30, we found extensive losses in fathers’ emotional, financial, and social lives, often compounded by disrupted relationships with their children. Many reported suicidal ideation, poor physical health, and limited support. Our findings underscore the urgent need for gender-sensitive mental health interventions, systemic reform, and accessible support networks to ensure that fathers can maintain their roles and well-being post-separation.
