Cover Story: This review paper examines the manifestation of land subsidence phenomena in the East Thessaly Basin, Greece, and its interaction with land use changes, flooding, and extreme weather events. Historical records, past geodetic, geological, and geotechnical surveys, and InSAR data were used to link subsidence phenomena to the continuous groundwater overexploitation caused by intensive agriculture since the 1970s. At the same time, the region’s susceptibility to extreme weather events has been underscored by recent storms, such as Medicane Daniel (2023), which caused severe flooding. The collective role of land use changes, tectonic activity, aquifer fluctuations, and past land reclamation efforts was also examined. The Issue cover photo features the visible impact of land subsidence in the village of Niki. View this paper
