Cover Story: Mimicking a leaf’s ability to convert solar energy into chemical energy in a very sophisticated photosynthesis process is the holy grail of photocatalysis. Very recently, scientists have been making huge and important progress in engineering and producing materials that can make the development of efficient artificial leaves a reality.
Photoelectrochemical water splitting is a form of artificial photosynthesis. It uses abundant and perpetual resources, such as water and the sun, to produce the solar fuels - H2 and O2. The bottleneck for this process is the water oxidation half-reaction, and BiVO4 is a very promising material to address this issue. View this paper.
