Cover Story: The environmental impact of building energy renovations is often evaluated using Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), but many LCA studies overlook the energy performance gap. The discrepancy between calculated and actual energy use can significantly affect energy renovations’ environmental savings and payback times. This paper addresses this by developing a pragmatic statistical correction model based on a large-scale Flemish study to adjust operational energy use figures. Applied to four Flemish single-family dwellings, the results show a significant reduction in the expected environmental savings, with payback times extended by 7.5 to 13.4 years. This research underscores the importance of integrating the energy performance gap into LCA calculations to achieve more accurate assessments of the environmental benefits of energy renovations.
