Cover Story: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients face significant dietary challenges to prevent complications. Accurately evaluating food components, especially potassium and phosphorus, is crucial yet challenging for healthcare providers. In this study, we examined the potential of AI models, specifically ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, Bard AI, and Bing Chat, to aid in renal diet recommendations. We assessed 240 food items from the Mayo Clinic Renal Diet Handbook, testing the models' accuracy levels in classifying foods based on their potassium and phosphorus content. The findings revealed a range of performances: ChatGPT 4 was notable in potassium identification, while Bard AI displayed impeccable accuracy for phosphorus. These results emphasize the emerging role of AI in renal dietary guidance. Some models show significant promise, but further improvements are essential for broad clinical utility. View this paper
