Cover Story: Outbreaks of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) subtype H9 are frequently reported in Nepal. To better understand the risk factors associated with such outbreaks we carried out a case–control study in Chitwan, Nawalpur, and Makwanpur districts, the major poultry hubs in Nepal. A total of 51 case (LPAI subtype H9 positive) and 51 control (LPAI negative) farms were visited, and farmers were surveyed using a semi-structured questionnaire. While distance from the main road (<0.5 km), closeness (<1 km) to the infected farms, and wild birds coming around the farms were identified as the risk factors, the use of a separate apron or cloth inside the farm was observed to reduce the risk of LPAI subtype H9 outbreaks. This study highlights the importance of the right site selection to establish poultry farms and the need to maintain good biosecurity measures outside and within the farms. View this paper
