Dear Colleagues,

The sustainable development of natural bioactive compounds/products in animal resources and agriculture science involves the cultivation, extraction, and utilization of natural compounds found in plants and animals for various applications. These compounds are often used in the fields of medicine, food, and cosmetics, among others. To achieve sustainable development in this area, it is important to adopt practices that promote the responsible use of resources, conservation of biodiversity, and reduction of waste. This can be achieved by:

Adopting sustainable farming practices: This involves the use of organic farming techniques, crop rotation, and the use of natural fertilizers to minimize the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. This helps to preserve the natural habitats of plants and animals, reduce soil erosion, and maintain the soil's fertility.

Promoting biodiversity conservation: This can be achieved by encouraging the planting of diverse crops and promoting the use of natural pest control methods such as companion planting and the use of biological pest control agents. This helps to preserve the natural habitats of plants and animals and promotes genetic diversity.

Efficient extraction and processing of natural compounds: This involves the use of efficient extraction techniques that minimize waste and the use of renewable energy sources in the processing of natural compounds. This helps to reduce the environmental impact of the extraction and processing of natural compounds.

Developing innovative products and applications: This involves the development of innovative products and applications of natural compounds that have high value and contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture and animal resources. This can include the development of natural medicines, food additives, and cosmetic products, among others.

Overall, the sustainable development of natural bioactive compounds/products in animal resources and agriculture science involves adopting practices that promote environmental and social sustainability while maximizing the economic benefits of these natural resources. For this reason, it receives special attention in agricultural, commercial industries, and pharmaceutical applications. These Bioactive compounds are additional nutritional constituents found in small quantities in foods and provide health benefits beyond the basic nutritional value of the product.

This Topic welcomes publications which focus on any aspect of animals (pigs, cattle, aqua, poultry, rabbits, rats, etc.) in agricultural production systems, including immunology or nutrition, which increases animals’ resistance to infection and enhances their growth and production performances. In this Topic, we invite researchers to contribute their original or review articles on sustainable development of natural bioactive compounds/products in animals, agriculture, poultry, agronomy and fishery. Additionally, papers are welcome that focus on the potential bioactivities of extracted natural compounds and their potential biological applications in human welfare.

Structure and Diversity of Microbiomes Associated with the Gastrointestinal Tracts of Wild Spiny Lobsters and Profiling Their Potential Probiotic Properties Using eDNA Metabarcoding

Microbial communities have been documented as playing many pivotal roles, and contributing to the growth or health performance of animal hosts. Thus, many studies are currently looking for potential beneficial bacteria “probiotics” from diverse environments, including wild species. The present study aimed to investigate the diversity and potential metabolic functions of bacterial communities in the gastrointestinal tract of wild spiny lobsters. The gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of two wild lobster species (Panulirus ornatus and Panulirus homarus) were dissected aseptically and analyzed through high-throughput sequencing, followed by PICRUSt analysis. The results exposed that the most dominant phyla inhabiting both lobster species at the post-puerulus and juvenile stages were Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteriodota, Patescibacteria, and Verrucomicrobiota, while at the genus level, the GI tracts were mostly dominated by Photobacterium, Candidatus Bacillopora, Vibrio, and Catenococcus at the post-peurulus stage, and Vibrio, Catenococcus, Acanthopleuribacter, Acinetobacter, Pseudoalteromonas, Grimontia, and Photobacterium at the juvenile stage. Further metagenomic prediction analysis discovers many potential probiont properties indicated by the detection of marker genes corresponding to many important metabolic activities, such as antimicrobial compounds (streptomycin, vancomycin, carbapenem, tetracycline, novobiocin, penicillin, cephalosporin, ansamycines, butirosin, and neomycin), antioxidants (e.g., flavonoids and carotenoids), and several important digestive enzymes (e.g., lipase, protease, and amylase). These results suggest that GI tracts of wild spiny lobsters are potential sources to discover novel probionts for aquaculture purposes. Further studies, such as the isolation of the natural product-producing bacteria, or cloning of the beneficial compound-identified genes, are highly recommended to develop novel probiotic strains for aquaculture purposes. Fatty Acid Content and Oxidative Stability in Eggs and Breast Muscle of Sasso Chickens Fed Different Levels of Dodonaea angustifolia Polyphenol in Flaxseed-Enriched Diets

In chicken diet with dietary fat, adding plant polyphenols as a natural antioxidant is recommended to enhance the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) content and improve oxidative stability in meat and eggs. However, high plant polyphenol doses could act as a pro-oxidant and interfere with the absorption of n-3 PUFAs. The study aimed to determine the effects of Dodoneae angustifolia (D. angustifolia) polyphenol levels in flaxseed-enriched diets on fatty acid content and oxidative stability in the meat and eggs of Sasso chickens. Chickens received 0, 200, 500, or 800 mg of D. angustifolia extract/kg diet designated as DA0, DA2, DA5, and DA8 treatments, respectively. Results showed that the breast muscle content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3) in 200 and 500 mg extract/kg diet and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) in 800 mg extract/kg diet increased (p < 0.05) compared to those who did not receive. Feeding D. angustifolia polyphenol levels had no significant effect on egg yolk n-3 PUFA content. However, a decrease (p < 0.05) in egg yolk n-6 PUFAs was observed in hens with an increase in the dose of D. angustifolia polyphenol extract. In breast muscle, feeding on a 500 mg extract/kg diet decreased lipid peroxidation (p < 0.05) compared to the control diet. However, feeding different doses of D. angustifolia extracts had no effect on egg yolk lipid peroxidation. Full article

Fraxetin Targeting to Sortase A Decreases the Pathogenicity of Streptococcus agalactiae to Nile Tilapia

Sortase A (SrtA) is responsible for anchoring surface proteins to the cell wall, and has been identified as a promising target developing anti-infective drugs of Gram-positive bacteria. The aim of the study was to identify inhibitors of Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) SrtA from natural compounds to overcome the spread of antibiotic resistance in aquaculture. Here, we found that the MIC of fraxetin against S. agalactiae was higher than 256 μg/mL, indicating that fraxetin had no anti- S. agalactiae activity. But fraxetin could dose-dependently decrease the activity of SrtA in vitro at concentrations ranging between 4–32 μg/mL by a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay. Moreover, the inhibition of SrtA by fraxetin decreased the anchoring of surface proteins with the LPXTG motif to the cell wall by detecting the immunofluorescence change of serine-rich repeat protein 1 (Srr1) on the bacterial cell surface. The results of fibronectin binding and cell adhesion assays indicated that fraxetin could significantly decrease the adhesion ability of S. agalactiae in a dose-dependent manner. The results were further proven by immunofluorescence staining. Animal challenge results showed that treatment with fraxetin could reduce the mortality of tilapia infected with S. agalactiae to 46.67%, indicating that fraxetin could provide a significant amount of protection to tilapia by inactivating SrtA. Taken together, these findings provided a novel inhibitor of S. agalactiae SrtA and a promising candidate for treating S. agalactiae infections in aquaculture. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of essential oils from the fruits of Citrus sinensis and Xylopia aromatica, included in broiler feed, on blood parameters, the biometrics of digestive organs, bone analyses, and the biochemical profiles of the viscera, as well as the histomorphometry of the small intestine. In this study, 180 one-day-old male chicks of the Cobb 500 strain were fed a corn and soybean meal over three treatments and six replications, and the experimental design was completely randomized. The data were subjected to an analysis of variance and a Tukey test at a 5% significance level. The effect of the experimental diets on performance, blood parameters, biometrics of the digestive organs, bone analysis, and biochemical profiles of the viscera, as well as the histomorphometry of the small intestine, were evaluated. The compounds identified in the essential oil of X. aromatica were sylvestrene, α-pinene, and β-pinene, while in C. sinensis they were limonene and myrcene. The essential oils of C. sinensis and X. aromatica had no significant effect on performance at 14 days. The effects of the presence of the essential oils of C. sinensis and X. aromatica on the response were beneficial: there were reductions in liver lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, and in the depths of the crypts in the jejunum of chickens. So, the essential oils from the fruits of C. sinensis and X. aromatica can be used in broiler chickens to improve the lipid profiles of birds without affecting their performance. Full article
