Surface Air-Cooled Oil Coolers (SACOCs) can become a critical component in managing the increasing thermal loads of modern turbofan engines. Installed within the bypass duct, SACOCs utilize high-mass flow bypass air for convective heat rejection, reducing reliance on traditional Fuel-Oil Heat Exchangers. This review explores SACOC design principles, integration challenges, aerodynamic impacts, and performance trade-offs. Emphasis is placed on the balance between thermal efficiency and aerodynamic penalties such as pressure drop and flow distortion. Experimental techniques, including wind tunnel testing, are discussed alongside numerical methods, and Conjugate Heat Transfer modeling. Presented studies mostly demonstrate the impact of fin geometry and placement on both heat transfer and drag. Optimization strategies and Additive Manufacturing techniques are also covered. SACOCs are positioned to play a central role in future propulsion systems, especially in ultra-high bypass ratio and hybrid-electric architectures, where traditional cooling strategies are insufficient. This review highlights current advancements, identifies limitations, and outlines research directions to enhance SACOC efficiency in aerospace applications. Full article

Medium and large-sized birds exhibit remarkable agility and maneuverability in flight, with their flapping motion encompassing degrees of freedom in flapping, twist, and swing, which enables them to adapt effectively to harsh ecological environments. This study proposes a flapping–twist coupled driving mechanism for large-scale flapping-wing aircraft by mimicking the motion patterns of birds. The mechanism generates simultaneous twist and flapping motions based on the phase difference of double cranks, allowing for the adjustment of twist amplitude through modifications in crank radius and phase difference. The objective of this work is to optimize the lift and thrust of the flapping wing to enhance its flight performance. To achieve this, we first derived the kinematic model of the mechanism and conducted motion simulations. To mitigate the effects of the flapping wing’s flexibility, a rigid flapping wing was designed and manufactured. Through wind tunnel experiments, the flapping wing system was tested. The results demonstrated that, compared to the non-twist condition, there exists an optimal twist amplitude that slightly increases the lift of the flapping wing while significantly enhancing the thrust. It is hoped that this study will provide guidance for the design of multi-degree-of-freedom flapping wing mechanisms. Full article

This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

We developed a microscale airflow modeling system with detailed building and terrain data to better understand the urban microclimate. Building shapes and heights, and terrain elevation data were integrated to construct a high-resolution urban surface geometry. The system, based on computational fluid dynamics using OpenFOAM, can resolve complex flow structures around built environments. Inflow boundary conditions were generated using logarithmic wind profiles derived from Automatic Weather System (AWS) observations under neutral stability. After validation with wind-tunnel data for a single block, the system was applied to airflow modeling around a university campus in Seoul using AWS data from four nearby stations. The results demonstrated that the system captured key flow characteristics such as channeling, wake, and recirculation induced by complex terrain and building configurations. In particular, easterly inflow cases with high-rise buildings on the leeward side of a mountain exhibited intensified wakes and internal recirculations, with elevated centers influenced by tall structures. This modeling framework, with further development, could support diverse urban applications for microclimate and air quality, facilitating urban resilience. Full article

During the process of flexible aerial refueling, the flexible structure of the hose drogue assembly is affected by internal and external interference, such as docking maneuvering, deformation of the hose, attitude changes, and body vibrations, causing the hose to swing and the whipping phenomenon, which greatly limits the success rate and safety of aerial refueling operations. Based on a 2.4 m transonic wind tunnel, high-speed wind tunnel test technology of a flexible aerial refueling hose–drogue system was established to carry out experimental research on the coupling characteristics of aerodynamics and multi-body dynamics. Based on the aid of Videogrammetry Model Deformation (VMD), high-speed photography, dynamic balance, and other wind tunnel test technologies, the dynamic characteristics of the hose–drogue system in a high-speed airflow and during the approach of the receiver are obtained. Adopting flexible multi-body dynamics, a dynamic system of the tanker, hose, drogue, and receiver is modeled. The cable/beam model is based on an arbitrary Lagrange–Euler method, and the absolute node coordinate method is used to describe the deformation, movement, and length variation in the hose during both winding and unwinding. The aerodynamic forces of the tanker, receiver, hose, and drogue are modeled, reflecting the coupling influence of movement of the tanker and receiver, the deformation of the hose and drogue, and the aerodynamic forces on each other. The tests show that during the approach of the receiver (distance from 1000 mm to 20 mm), the sinking amount of the drogue increases by 31 mm; due to the offset of the receiver probe, the drogue moves sideways from the symmetric plane of the receiver. Meanwhile, the oscillation magnitude of the drogue increases (from 33 to 48 and from 48 to 80 in spanwise and longitudinal directions, respectively). The simulation results show that the shear force induced by the oscillation of the hose and the propagation velocity of both the longitudinal and shear waves are affected by the hose stiffness and Mach number. The results presented in this work can be of great reference to further increase the safety of aerial refueling. Full article

Corner separation at the junction of blade surfaces and end walls remains a significant challenge in compressor cascade performance. This study proposes a passive flow control strategy inspired by the geometric arrangement of biological fish scales to address this issue. A fish scale-like surface structure was applied to the suction side of a cascade blade to reduce viscous drag and modulate secondary flow behavior. Wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to evaluate its aerodynamic effects. The results show that the fish scale-inspired configuration induced climbing vortices that energized low-momentum fluid near the end wall, effectively suppressing both passage and corner vortices. This led to a reduction in spanwise flow penetration and a decrease in total pressure loss of up to 5.69%. The enhanced control of secondary flows also contributed to improved flow uniformity in the end-wall region. These findings highlight the potential of biologically inspired surface designs for corner vortex suppression and aerodynamic efficiency improvement in turbomachinery systems. Full article

A real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) system of an airplane composite wing with adjustable damage is reported, where testing under realistic flight conditions is carried out in the controllable and repeatable environment of an industrial wind tunnel. An FBG-based sensing array monitors a debonded region, whose compromised structural strength is regained by a set of lockable fasteners. Damage tunability is achieved by loosening some of or all these fasteners. Real-time analysis of the data collected involves Principal Component Analysis, followed by Hotelling’s T-squared and Q measures. With previously set criteria, real-time data collection and processing software can declare the structural health status as normal or abnormal. During testing, the system using the Q measure successfully identified the initiation of the damage and its extent, while the T-squared one returned limited outcomes. Full article

Flight mechanics/dynamics models are essential for analyzing aircraft flight performance, where aerodynamic data play a critical role. This paper establishes a missile flight dynamics model and investigates the influence of aerodynamic modeling errors based on wind tunnel test data. Common aerodynamic modeling methods are compared, the effects of longitudinal coefficient deviations on the linearized missile model are analyzed using a deviation test approach, and the results are validated through simulations. The results show that interpolation-based aerodynamic modeling may lead to overfitting; segmented or denser Mach number testing is recommended to improve accuracy. Although aerodynamic error models based on derivatives and coefficients are applicable only within limited flight envelopes, they offer faster simulation and convenient uncertainty introduction. The missile’s longitudinal eigenvalue distribution is affected only by CLα, CmCL, and Cmq¯. The frequency domain differences between lift and pitch control surface effects determine the system’s non-minimum phase behavior. Furthermore, aerodynamic uncertainties may increase overshoot risk in a closed-loop control system, highlighting the need for robust control design. Full article

Metropolitan city express line tunnels are fully enclosed and often span long distances between stations, allowing multiple trains within a single interval. Traditional segmented ventilation ensures only one train per section, but ultra-long tunnels with shaftless designs introduce new challenges under fire conditions. This study investigates smoke behavior in an ultra-long inter-district tunnel during multi-train blockage scenarios. A numerical model evaluates the effects of train spacing, fire source location, and receding spacing on smoke back-layering, temperature distribution, and flow velocity. Results indicate that when train spacing exceeds 200 m and longitudinal wind speed is above 1.2 m/s, the impact of train spacing on smoke back-layering becomes negligible. Larger train spacing increases back-layering under constant wind speed, while higher wind speeds reduce it. Fire source location and evacuation spacing affect the extent and pattern of smoke spread and high-temperature zones, especially under reverse ventilation conditions. These findings provide quantitative insights into fire-induced smoke dynamics in ultra-long tunnels, offering theoretical support for optimizing ventilation control and evacuation strategies in urban express systems. Icing on transmission lines in cold regions can cause asymmetry in the conductor cross-section. This asymmetry can lead to low-frequency, large-amplitude oscillations, posing a serious threat to the stability and safety of power transmission systems. In this study, the aerodynamic characteristics of crescent-shaped and sector-shaped iced eight-bundled conductors were systematically investigated over an angle of attack range from 0° to 180°. A combined approach involving wind tunnel tests and high-precision computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations was adopted. In the wind tunnel tests, static aerodynamic coefficients and dynamic time series data were obtained using a high-precision aerodynamic balance and a turbulence grid. In the CFD simulations, transient flow structures and vortex shedding mechanisms were analyzed based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the SST k-ω turbulence model. A comprehensive comparison between the two ice accretion geometries was conducted. The results revealed distinct aerodynamic instability mechanisms and frequency-domain characteristics. The analysis was supported by Fourier’s fourth-order harmonic decomposition and energy spectrum analysis. It was found that crescent-shaped ice, due to its streamlined leading edge, induced a dominant single vortex shedding. In this case, the first-order harmonic accounted for 67.7% of the total energy. In contrast, the prismatic shape of sector-shaped ice caused migration of the separation point and introduced broadband energy input. Stability thresholds were determined using the Den Hartog criterion. Sector-shaped iced conductors exhibited significant negative aerodynamic damping under ten distinct operating conditions. Compared to the crescent-shaped case, the instability risk range increased by 60%. The strong agreement between simulation and experimental results validated the reliability of the numerical approach. This study establishes a multiscale analytical framework for understanding galloping mechanisms of iced conductors. It also identifies early warning indicators in the frequency domain and provides essential guidance for the design of more effective anti-galloping control strategies in resilient power transmission systems. This paper presents a comparative study examining the effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and expanded graphite (EG) on the thermal, mechanical, morphological, electrical, and piezoresistive properties of poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) nanocomposites. To this end, different amounts of carbonaceous fillers (EG and CNTs separately) were added to the EMAA thermoplastic matrix, and the relative electrical percolation thresholds (EPTs) were determined. The effect of filler concentration on thermo-oxidative degradation and the EMAA crystallinity was investigated via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) demonstrated that both fillers enhance the Young’s and storage moduli, as well as the glass transition temperature, with a greater improvement for the bidimensional nanofiller, most likely due to the cumulative effect of more extensive EG-matrix interactions. In tensile tests, a very relevant difference was detected in the Gauge Factor (G.F.) and the elongation at break of the two typologies of nanocomposites. The G.F. of EMAA 10% CNT and EMAA 15% EG were found to be 0.5 ± 0.08 and 165 ± 14, respectively, while elongation at break was about 68% for EMAA 10% CNT and 8% for EMAA 15% EG. Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Tunneling Atomic Force Microscopy (TUNA) have contributed to explaining the differences between EG- and CNT-based nanocomposites from a morphological point of view, underlying the pivotal role of the filler aspect ratio and its structural features in determining different mechanical and piezoresistive performance. The comprehensive analysis of EMAA-EG and EMAA-CNT nanocomposites provides a guide for selecting the best self-sensing system for the specific application. More specifically, EMAA-CNT nanocomposites with high elongation at break and lower sensitivity to small strains are suitable for movement sensors in the soft robotic field, where high deformation has to be detected. On the other hand, the high sensitivity at a low strain of EMAA-EG systems makes them suitable for integrated sensors in more rigid composite structures, such as aeronautical and automotive components or wind turbines. Terrain conditions may significantly affect the near-ground-layer wind speed in coastal areas. In this research, wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were performed to investigate the impact of topographic changes on the local wind field at coastal bridge sites. Considering the geographic information system (GIS) information of an offshore bridge site, a 1:1000 topographic model was constructed to conduct tests in the wind tunnel lab under different wind directions. The influences of terrain conditions on localized wind characteristics such as the wind speed and wind attack angle under different test conditions were obtained. The results show that the wind angle varied between −6° and 6° under different conditions. To more comprehensively show the radius of influence on the local terrain, a CFD simulation was conducted. To verify the results of the wind tunnel tests, the SST k-ω model was compared and selected for simulation in this research. The influence radius of localized wind characteristics was determined by CFD simulation. The results indicate that the original topography showed “reverse amplification” on the leeward side, resulting in complex wake flows. These results may provide a reference for the design of wind-resistant structures such as bridges and offshore wind turbines in coastal areas. Full article

A small-scale supersonic flight experiment vehicle is being developed at Muroran Institute of Technology as a flying testbed for verification of innovative technologies for high-speed atmospheric flights, which are essential to next-generation aerospace transportation systems. Its baseline configuration M2011 with a cranked-arrow main wing with an inboard and outboard leading edge sweepback angle of 66 and 61 degrees and horizontal and vertical tails has been proposed. Its aerodynamics caused by attitude motion are required to be clarified for six-degree-of-freedom flight capability prediction and autonomous guidance and control. This study concentrates on characterization of such aerodynamics caused by rolling rates in the subsonic regime. A mechanism for rolling a wind-tunnel test model at various rolling rates and arbitrary pitch angle is designed and fabricated using a programmable stepping motor and an equatorial mount. A series of subsonic wind-tunnel tests and preliminary CFD analysis are carried out. The resultant static derivatives have sufficiently small scatter and agree quite well with the static wind-tunnel tests in the case of a small pitch angle, whereas the static directional stability deteriorates in the case of large pitch angles and large nose lengths. In addition, the resultant dynamic derivatives agree well with the CFD analysis and the conventional theory in the case of zero pitch angle, whereas the roll damping deteriorates in the case of large pitch angles and proverse yaw takes place in the case of a large nose length. The precise control of Mach numbers in supersonic and hypersonic compressor wind tunnel systems is a critical challenge in aerodynamic research. Although existing studies have improved prediction accuracy to some extent through machine learning methods, they generally neglect the multi-mode characteristics of complex wind tunnel systems, limiting the generalizability of the models. To address this issue, the present study proposes a multi-mode dynamic fusion Mach number prediction framework that integrates strategies of segmented modeling and cross-modal information fusion. First, single-mode segmented prediction models are constructed on the basis of Multi-output Support Vector Regression (MSVR), with hyperparameters optimized to capture the characteristics of individual modes. Second, the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method is employed to explore the correlations between historical and new modes, dynamically selecting the optimal prediction model and updating the historical mode repository. Experimental results demonstrate that the multi-mode dynamic fusion framework reduces the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) by 70.57%, 56.4%, and 63.64% compared to Support Vector Regression (SVR), PLS, and Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) networks across six operating conditions. The framework proposed in this paper enhances Mach number prediction accuracy while improving model generalizability. Full article

This study presents the experimental results of an energy harvesting system comprising a cylindrical bluff body coupled with a cantilever beam. A piezoelectric sensor was installed on the beam to generate electrical voltage during the object’s vibrations at the beam’s free end. The research aimed to evaluate the impact of the bluff body’s mass and diameter on the efficiency of the piezoelectric energy harvesting system. Vibrations of the test object were induced by airflow within a chamber of a closed-loop wind tunnel. Five different bluff body masses were analyzed for each of three cylindrical diameters across an airflow velocity range of 1 m/s to 10 m/s. These experiments allowed for the recording of a series of voltage signals over time. The signals were then subjected to Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis. Subsequently, the relationship between vibration frequency and airflow velocity was examined. The peak-to-peak voltage value was also analyzed to provide an overall assessment of the energy harvesting efficiency of the system under investigation. Finally, the 0–1 test for chaos was additionally employed as a diagnostic tool to assess the complexity of system dynamics based on time series data. This test allowed for distinguishing between oscillatory behavior and cases where the system became trapped in a potential well, revealing key transitions in dynamic regimes. Full article
