Recent Active Wildland Fires Related to Rossby Wave Breaking (RWB) in Alaska

Wildland fires are a common and destructive natural disaster in Alaska. Recent active fires in Alaska were assessed and analysed for their associated synoptic-scale climatic conditions in this study. Hotspot (HS) data from satellite observations over the past 20 years since 2004 (total number of HS = 300,988) were used to identify active fire-periods, and the occurrence of Rossby wave breaking (RWB) was examined using various weather maps. Analysis results show that there are 13 active fire-periods of which 7 active fire-periods are related to RWB. The total number of HSs during the seven RWB-related fire-periods was 164,422, indicating that about half (54.6%) of the recent fires in Alaska occurred under fire weather conditions related to RWB. During the RWB-related fire-periods, two hotspot peaks with different wind directions occurred. At the first hotspot peak, southwesterly wind blew from high-pressure systems in the Gulf of Alaska. In the second hotspot peak, the Beaufort Sea High (BSH) supplied strong easterly wind into Interior Alaska. It was suggested that changes in wind direction during active fire-period and continuously blowing winds from BSH may affect fire propagation. To reveal the influence mechanisms of seasonal climatic factors (wind speed, wind direction, temperature) and leakage direction on hydrogen dispersion and explosion behavior from single-source leaks at typical risk locations (hydrogen storage tanks, compressors, dispensers) in hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs), this work established a full-scale 1:1 three-dimensional numerical model using the FLACS v22.2 software based on the actual layout of an HRS in Xichang, Sichuan Province. Through systematic simulations of 72 leakage scenarios (3 equipment types × 4 seasons × 6 leakage directions), the coupled effects of climatic conditions, equipment layout, and leakage direction on hydrogen dispersion patterns and explosion risks were quantitatively analyzed. The key findings indicate the following: (1) Downward leaks (−Z direction) from storage tanks tend to form large-area ground-hugging hydrogen clouds, representing the highest explosion risk (overpressure peak: 0.25 barg; flame temperature: >2500 K). Leakage from compressors (±X/−Z directions) readily affects adjacent equipment. Dispenser leaks pose relatively lower risks, but specific directions (−Y direction) coupled with wind fields may drive significant hydrogen dispersion toward station buildings. (2) Southeast/south winds during spring/summer promote outward migration of hydrogen clouds, reducing overall station risk but causing localized accumulation near storage tanks. Conversely, north/northwest winds in autumn/winter intensify hydrogen concentrations in compressor and station building areas. (3) An empirical formula integrating climatic parameters, leakage conditions, and spatial coordinates was proposed to predict hydrogen concentration (error < 20%). This model provides theoretical and data support for optimizing sensor placement, dynamically adjusting ventilation strategies, and enhancing safety design in HRSs. Full article

The coastal sandy land in northeast Hainan Province is typical for this land type, also exhibiting strong sand activity. This study is based on wind speed, wind direction, and sediment transport data obtained at a field meteorological station using an omnidirectional sand accumulation instrument from 2020 to 2024, studying the coastal aeolian environment and sediment transport distribution characteristics in the region. Its findings provide a theoretical basis for comprehensively analyzing the evolution of coastal aeolian landforms and the evaluation and control of coastal aeolian hazards. The research results show the following: (1) The annual average threshold wind velocity for sand movement in the study area is 6.84 m/s, and the wind speed frequency (frequency of occurrence) is 51.54%, dominated by easterly (NE, ENE) and southerly (S, SSE) winds. (2) The drift potential (DP) refers to the potential amount of sediment transported within a certain time and spatial range, and the annual drift potential (DP) and resultant drift potential (RDP) of Mulan Bay from 2020 to 2024 were 550.82 VU and 326.88 VU, respectively, indicating a high-energy wind environment. The yearly directional wind variability index (RDP/DP) was 0.59, classified as a medium ratio and indicating blunt bimodal wind conditions. The yearly resultant drift direction (RDD) was 249.45°, corresponding to a WSW direction, indicating that the sand in Mulan Bay is generally transported in the southwest direction. (3) When the measured data extracted from the sand accumulation instrument in the study area from 2020 to 2024 were used for statistical analysis, the results showed that the total sediment transport rate (the annual sediment transport of the observation section) in the study area was 110.87 kg/m·a, with the maximum sediment transport rate in the NE direction being 29.26 kg/m·a. These results suggest that when sand fixation systems are constructed for relevant infrastructure in the region, the construction direction of protective forests and other engineering measures should be perpendicular to the net direction of sand transport. Residential areas are characterized by closely packed buildings which disturb wind flow resulting in low wind speeds (below 2 m/s) with a high turbulence intensity (above 20%). In order to interface between off-the-shelf wind turbines and low-quality wind, the Increased velocity (INVELOX) wind delivery system is an attractive wind augmentation option for such regions. The INVELOX setup can harness more energy than conventional bare wind turbines under the same incident wind conditions. However, these systems also have drawbacks and challenges that they face in their operation, which amplify the need to review, understand, and expose gaps and flaws in pursuit of increased power production in low wind quality environments. This paper seeks to review and simplify the advances done by various scholars towards improving the INVELOX delivery system. It provides the mathematical foundation on which these advances are rooted and gives an understanding of how the improvements better the geometric properties of INVELOX. The article concludes by proposing future research directions. Full article

The efficiency of electric motors is highly dependent on their operating temperature, with lower temperatures contributing to enhanced performance, reliability, and extended service life. This study presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art cooling technologies and evaluates their impact on the thermal behavior of a commercial motor–generator system in high-demand applications. A baseline model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was developed using MotorCAD 2023® software, which was supported by reverse engineering techniques to accurately replicate the motor’s physical and thermal characteristics. Subsequently, multiple cooling strategies were simulated under consistent operating conditions to assess their effectiveness. These strategies include conventional axial water jackets as well as advanced oil-based methods such as shaft cooling and direct oil spray to the windings. The integration of these systems in hybrid configurations was also explored to maximize thermal efficiency. Simulation results reveal that hybrid cooling significantly reduces the temperature of critical components such as stator windings and permanent magnets. This reduction in thermal stress improves current efficiency, power output, and torque capacity, enabling reliable motor operation across a broader range of speeds and under sustained high-load conditions. The findings highlight the effectiveness of hybrid cooling systems in optimizing both thermal management and operational performance of electric machines. Full article

The high-proportion integration of renewable energy sources, represented by wind power and photovoltaics, into active distribution networks (ADNs) can effectively alleviate the pressure associated with advancing China’s dual-carbon goals. However, the high uncertainty in renewable energy output leads to increased system voltage fluctuations and localized voltage violations, posing safety challenges. Consequently, research on optimal dispatch for ADNs with a high penetration of renewable energy has become a current focal point. This paper provides a comprehensive review of research in this domain over the past decade. Initially, it analyzes the voltage impact patterns and control principles in distribution networks under varying levels of renewable energy penetration. Subsequently, it introduces optimization dispatch models for ADNs that focus on three key objectives: safety, economy, and low carbon emissions. Furthermore, addressing the challenge of solving non-convex and nonlinear models, the paper highlights model reformulation strategies such as semidefinite relaxation, second-order cone relaxation, and convex inner approximation methods, along with summarizing relevant intelligent solution algorithms. Additionally, in response to the high uncertainty of renewable energy output, it reviews stochastic optimization dispatch strategies for ADNs, encompassing single-stage, two-stage, and multi-stage approaches. Meanwhile, given the promising prospects of large-scale deep reinforcement learning models in the power sector, their applications in ADN optimization dispatch are also reviewed. Finally, the paper outlines potential future research directions for ADN optimization dispatch. Full article

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission provides unprecedented high-resolution observations of sea-surface height. However, their direct use in ocean circulation studies is complicated by the presence of small-scale unbalanced motion signals and instrumental noise, which hinder accurate estimation of geostrophic velocities. To address these limitations, we developed an adaptive convolutional neural network (CNN)-based filtering technique that refines SWOT-derived sea-level observations. The network includes multi-head attention layers to exploit information on concurrent wind fields and standard altimetry interpolation errors. We train the model with a custom loss function that accounts for the differences between geostrophic velocities computed from SWOT sea-surface topography and simultaneous in-situ drifter velocities. We compare our method to existing filtering techniques, including a U-Net-based model and a variational noise-reduction filter. Our adaptive-filtering CNN produces accurate velocity estimates while preserving small-scale features and achieving a substantial noise reduction in the spectral domain. By combining satellite and in-situ data with machine learning, this work demonstrates the potential of an adaptive CNN-based filtering approach to enhance the accuracy and reliability of SWOT-derived sea-level and velocity estimates, providing a valuable tool for global oceanographic applications. The growing global demand for electricity, driven by the development of electromobility, data centers, and smart technologies, necessitates innovative approaches to energy generation. Wind power, as a clean and renewable energy source, plays a pivotal role in the global transition towards low-carbon power systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of generator technologies used in wind turbine applications, ranging from conventional synchronous and asynchronous machines to advanced concepts such as low-speed direct-drive (DD) generators, axial-flux topologies, and superconducting generators utilizing low-temperature superconductors (LTS) and high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The advantages and limitations of each design are discussed in the context of efficiency, weight, reliability, scalability, and suitability for offshore deployment. Special attention is given to HTS-based generator systems, which offer superior power density and reduced losses, along with challenges related to cryogenic cooling and materials engineering. Furthermore, the paper analyzes selected modern generator designs to provide references for enhancing the performance of grid-synchronized hybrid microgrids integrating solar PV, wind, battery energy storage, and HTS-enhanced generators. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and engineers developing next-generation wind energy technologies with improved efficiency and integration potential. Full article

Τhe Greek Seas are one of the most favorable locations for offshore wind energy development in the Mediterranean basin. In 2023, the Hellenic Hydrocarbons & Energy Resources Management Company SA published the draft National Offshore Wind Farm Development Programme (NDP-OWF), including the main pillars for the design, development, siting, installation, and exploitation of offshore wind farms, along with the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment. The NDP-OWF is under assessment by the relevant authorities and is expected to be finally approved through a Joint Ministerial Decision. In this work, the preliminary offshore wind energy assessment of the Greek Seas is performed using the CERRA wind reanalysis data and in situ measurements from six offshore locations of the Greek Seas. The in situ measurements are used in order to assess the performance of the reanalysis datasets. The results reveal that CERRA is a reliable source for preliminary offshore wind energy assessment studies. Taking into consideration the potential offshore wind farm organized development areas (OWFODA) according to the NDP-OWF, the study of the local wind characteristics is performed. The local wind speed and wind power density are assessed, and the wind energy produced from each OWFODA is estimated based on three different capacity density settings. According to the balanced setting (capacity density of 5.0 MW/km2), the annual energy production will be 17.5 TWh, which is equivalent to 1509.1 ktoe. An analysis of the wind energy correlation, synergy, and complementarity between the OWFODA is also performed, and a high degree of wind energy synergy is identified, with a very low degree of complementarity. Differential Mechanism of 3D Motions of Falling Debris in Tunnels Under Extreme Wind Environments Induced by a Single Train and by Trains Crossing

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

Transmission towers are particularly vulnerable to extreme wind events, which can lead to structural damage or collapse, thereby compromising the stability of power transmission systems. Enhancing the wind-resistant capacity of these towers is therefore critical for improving the reliability and resilience of electrical infrastructure. This study utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the structural response of a 220 kV transmission tower subjected to fluctuating wind loads, effectively capturing the dynamic characteristics of wind-induced forces. A comprehensive dynamic analysis is conducted to account for uncertainties in wind loading and variations in wind direction. Through this approach, this study identifies the most critical wind angle and local structural weaknesses, as well as determines the threshold wind speed that precipitates structural collapse. To improve structural resilience, a concurrent multi-scale modeling strategy is adopted. This allows for localized analysis of vulnerable components while maintaining a holistic understanding of the tower’s global behavior. To mitigate failure risks, the traditional perforated plate reinforcement technique is implemented. The reinforcement’s effectiveness is evaluated based on its impact on load-bearing capacity, displacement control, and stress redistribution. Results reveal that the critical wind direction is 45°, with failure predominantly initiating from instability in the third section of the tower leg. Post-reinforcement analysis demonstrates a marked improvement in structural performance, evidenced by a significant reduction in top displacement and stress intensity in the critical leg section. Overall, these findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the wind-induced fragility of transmission towers and offer practical reinforcement strategies that can be applied to enhance their structural integrity under extreme wind conditions. Addressing the need for contact load detection in wind turbine main bearings during service, a roller contact load measurement method is proposed. An analytical model characterizes the contact load-to-inner bore strain mapping relationship. To overcome the inherent low sensitivity of direct bore strain measurement, bore-to-measurement-point sensitivity analysis was optimized. Multiple structurally optimized sensor brackets were designed to enhance strain measurement sensitivity, and their performance was comparatively evaluated via simulation. To mitigate sensitivity fluctuations caused by roller rotation phase variations, a strain–phase–load calculation method incorporating real-time phase compensation was developed and verified through simulation analysis. A dedicated roller contact load testing system was constructed and experimental validation was conducted. Results demonstrate 95% accuracy in contact load acquisition. This method accurately obtains roller contact loads in wind turbine main bearings, proving crucial for studying bearing mechanical behavior, predicting fatigue life, optimizing structural design, and enhancing reliability. Transonic/supersonic wind tunnels are indispensable equipment for advanced aircraft to operate across subsonic, transonic, and supersonic regimes. The deformation of the flexible nozzle is the key to accurately controlling the Mach number of transonic wind tunnels. However, solving the deformation of flexible wall plates remains challenging due to the highly nonlinear relationship between wall loading and deformation, as well as the lack of simple yet effective mathematical models under complex boundary conditions. To accurately describe the deformation of flexible wall plates and improve computational efficiency, this study systematically investigates the deformation characteristics of flexible walls in two orthogonal directions and proposes an orthogonal beam function (OBF) model for characterizing small-deflection deformations. For large-deflection deformations in a flexible wall, an elliptic integral (EI) solution is introduced, and the OBF model is correspondingly modified. Experimental validation confirms that the OBF model effectively describes large-deflection deformations in a flexible wall. This research contributes to solving large-deflection deformation in flexible wall plates, enhancing both computational efficiency and accuracy. Full article

Deep Learning-Based Instance Segmentation of Galloping High-Speed Railway Overhead Contact System Conductors in Video Images

The conductors of high-speed railway OCSs (Overhead Contact Systems) are susceptible to conductor galloping due to the impact of natural elements such as strong winds, rain, and snow, resulting in conductor fatigue damage and significantly compromising train operational safety. Consequently, monitoring the galloping status of conductors is crucial, and instance segmentation techniques, by delineating the pixel-level contours of each conductor, can significantly aid in the identification and study of galloping phenomena. This work expands upon the YOLO11-seg model and introduces an instance segmentation approach for galloping video and image sensor data of OCS conductors. The algorithm, designed for the stripe-like distribution of OCS conductors in the data, employs four-direction Sobel filters to extract edge features in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal orientations. These features are subsequently integrated with the original convolutional branch to form the FDSE (Four Direction Sobel Enhancement) module. It integrates the ECA (Efficient Channel Attention) mechanism for the adaptive augmentation of conductor characteristics and utilizes the FL (Focal Loss) function to mitigate the class-imbalance issue between positive and negative samples, hence enhancing the model’s sensitivity to conductors. Consequently, segmentation outcomes from neighboring frames are utilized, and mask-difference analysis is performed to autonomously detect conductor galloping locations, emphasizing their contours for the clear depiction of galloping characteristics. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced YOLO11-seg model achieves 85.38% precision, 77.30% recall, 84.25% AP@0.5, 81.14% F1-score, and a real-time processing speed of 44.78 FPS. When combined with the galloping visualization module, it can issue real-time alerts of conductor galloping anomalies, providing robust technical support for railway OCS safety monitoring. Surface Air-Cooled Oil Coolers (SACOCs) can become a critical component in managing the increasing thermal loads of modern turbofan engines. Installed within the bypass duct, SACOCs utilize high-mass flow bypass air for convective heat rejection, reducing reliance on traditional Fuel-Oil Heat Exchangers. This review explores SACOC design principles, integration challenges, aerodynamic impacts, and performance trade-offs. Emphasis is placed on the balance between thermal efficiency and aerodynamic penalties such as pressure drop and flow distortion. Experimental techniques, including wind tunnel testing, are discussed alongside numerical methods, and Conjugate Heat Transfer modeling. Presented studies mostly demonstrate the impact of fin geometry and placement on both heat transfer and drag. Optimization strategies and Additive Manufacturing techniques are also covered. SACOCs are positioned to play a central role in future propulsion systems, especially in ultra-high bypass ratio and hybrid-electric architectures, where traditional cooling strategies are insufficient. This review highlights current advancements, identifies limitations, and outlines research directions to enhance SACOC efficiency in aerospace applications. Full article
