This exploratory case study investigates the implementation and educational impact of a Virtual Reality (VR)- and Augmented Reality (AR)-based assistive technology developed to support learners with dyslexia. The intervention, delivered via mobile devices and VR headsets, incorporated gamified and interactive content aimed at enhancing cognitive skills such as attention, inhibition, narrative memory, and phonological awareness. Two in-depth case studies were conducted with primary school students formally diagnosed with dyslexia. Cognitive performance was assessed using the NEPSY-II neuropsychological battery, and user experience was evaluated using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The results showed positive trends in executive function and language-related skills, as well as high motivation and satisfaction. While these findings suggest promising benefits of immersive educational technologies in dyslexia intervention, conclusions regarding efficacy cannot be drawn due to the limited sample size. Further research with larger and controlled designs is needed to validate these initial observations. Full article

Honey is a natural product of honeybees that has been consumed for centuries due to its nutritional value and potential health benefits. Recent scientific research has focused on its antioxidant capacity, which is linked to a variety of bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids, enzymes (e.g., glucose oxidase, catalase), flavonoids, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, amino acids, and proteins. Together, these components work synergistically to neutralize free radicals, regulate antioxidant enzyme activity, and reduce oxidative stress. This review decisively outlines the antioxidant effects of honey and presents compelling clinical and experimental evidence supporting its critical role in preventing diseases associated with oxidative stress. Honey stands out for its extensive health benefits, which include robust protection against cardiovascular issues, notable anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects, enhanced glycemic control in diabetes, immune modulation, neuroprotection, and effective wound healing. As a recognized functional food and dietary supplement, honey is essential for the prevention and adjunct treatment of chronic diseases. However, it faces challenges due to variations in composition linked to climatic conditions, geographical and floral sources, as well as hive management practices. The limited number of large-scale clinical trials further underscores the need for more research. Future studies must focus on elucidating honey’s antioxidant mechanisms, standardizing its bioactive compounds, and examining its synergistic effects with other natural antioxidants to fully harness its potential. Traditional map style transfer methods are mostly based on GAN,which are either overly artistic at the expense of conveying information, or insufficiently aesthetic by simply changing the color scheme of the map image. These methods often struggle to balance style transfer with semantic preservation and lack consistency in their transfer effects. In recent years, diffusion models have made significant progress in the field of image processing and have shown great potential in image-style transfer tasks. Inspired by these advances, this paper presents a method for transferring real-world 3D scenes to a cartoon style without the need for additional input condition guidance. The method combines pre-trained LDM with LoRA models to achieve stable and high-quality style infusion. By integrating DDIM Inversion, ControlNet, and MultiDiffusion strategies, it achieves the cartoon style transfer of real-world 3D scenes through initial noise control, detail redrawing, and global coordination. Qualitative and quantitative analyses, as well as user studies, indicate that our method effectively injects a cartoon style while preserving the semantic content of the real-world 3D scene, maintaining a high degree of consistency in style transfer. This paper offers a new perspective for map style transfer. Full article

The study investigates the contribution of technology (TECH), quantified by Internet penetration, in influencing tourism performance (TP) among the top ten touristic nations in Europe: France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Using panel data from 2000–2022, the study includes additional structural controls like environment quality, gross domestic production (GDP) per capita, exchange rate (ER), and safety index (SI). The Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) is employed to capture heterogeneous effects at different levels of TP, and Driscoll–Kraay standard error (DKSE) correction is employed to make the analysis robust against autocorrelation as well as cross-sectional dependence. Spectral–Granger causality tests are also conducted to check short- and long-run dynamics in the relationships. Empirical results are that TECH and SI are important in TP at all quantiles, but with stronger effects for lower-performing countries. Environmental quality (EQ) and GDP per capita (GDPPC) exert increasing impacts at upper quantiles, suggesting their importance in sustaining high-level tourism economies. ER effects are limited and primarily short-term. The findings highlight the need for integrated digital, environmental, and economic policies to achieve sustainable tourism development. The paper contributes to tourism research by providing a comprehensive, frequency-sensitive, and distributional analysis of macroeconomic determinants of tourism in highly developed European tourist destinations. Phage therapy, long overshadowed by antibiotics in Western medicine, has a well-established history in some Eastern European countries and is now being revitalized as a promising strategy against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This resurgence of phage therapy is driven by the urgent need for innovative countermeasures to AMR, which will cause an estimated 10 million deaths annually by 2050. However, the emergence of phage-resistant variants presents challenges similar to AMR, thus necessitating a deeper understanding of phage resistance mechanisms and control strategies. The highest priority must be to prevent the emergence of phage resistance. Although phage cocktails targeting multiple receptors have demonstrated a certain level of phage resistance suppression, they cannot completely suppress resistance in clinical settings. This highlights the need for strategies beyond simple resistance suppression. Notably, recent studies examining fitness trade-offs associated with phage resistance have opened new avenues in phage therapy that offer the potential of restoring antibiotic susceptibility and attenuating pathogen virulence despite phage resistance. Thus, controlling phage resistance may rely on both its suppression and strategic redirection. This review summarizes key concepts in the control of phage resistance and explores evolutionary engineering as a means of optimizing phage therapy, with a particular focus on Pseudomonas infections. Harnessing evolutionary dynamics by intentionally breaking the spontaneous evolutionary trajectories of target bacterial pathogens could potentially reshape bacterial adaptation by acquisition of phage resistance, unlocking potential in the application of phage therapy. The Criticality of Consciousness: Excitatory–Inhibitory Balance and Dual Memory Systems in Active Inference

The organization of consciousness is described through increasingly rich theoretical models. We review evidence that working memory capacity—essential to generating consciousness in the cerebral cortex—is supported by dual limbic memory systems. These dorsal (Papez) and ventral (Yakovlev) limbic networks provide the basis for mnemonic processing and prediction in the dorsal and ventral divisions of the human neocortex. Empirical evidence suggests that the dorsal limbic division is (i) regulated preferentially by excitatory feedforward control, (ii) consolidated by REM sleep, and (iii) controlled in waking by phasic arousal through lemnothalamic projections from the pontine brainstem reticular activating system. The ventral limbic division and striatum, (i) organizes the inhibitory neurophysiology of NREM to (ii) consolidate explicit memory in sleep, (iii) operating in waking cognition under the same inhibitory feedback control supported by collothalamic tonic activation from the midbrain. We propose that (i) these dual (excitatory and inhibitory) systems alternate in the stages of sleep, and (ii) in waking they must be balanced—at criticality—to optimize the active inference that generates conscious experiences. Optimal Bayesian belief updating rests on balanced feedforward (excitatory predictive) and feedback (inhibitory corrective) control biases that play the role of prior and likelihood (i.e., sensory) precision. Because the excitatory (E) phasic arousal and inhibitory (I) tonic activation systems that regulate these dual limbic divisions have distinct affective properties, varying levels of elation for phasic arousal (E) and anxiety for tonic activation (I), the dual control systems regulate sleep and consciousness in ways that are adaptively balanced—around the entropic nadir of EI criticality—for optimal self-regulation of consciousness and psychological health. Because they are emotive as well as motive control systems, these dual systems have unique qualities of feeling that may be registered as subjective experience. Full article

In this study, an artificially simulated enhanced UV-B radiation treatment of 96 kJ/m2·d−1 was applied with natural sunlight as the control. By observing changes in biological tissue damage, peroxidase (POD) enzyme activity, and hormone content, combined with transcriptome analysis and quantitative fluorescence PCR validation, this study preliminarily elucidated the physiological mechanisms of plant-specific peroxidase (POD) in responding to enhanced UV-B radiation stress. Enhanced UV-B treatment significantly inhibited biological tissue growth, particularly during the rapid growth stage. At this stage, the treatment exhibited higher malondialdehyde (MDA) content, indicating increased oxidative stress due to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Despite the inhibition in growth, the treatment showed improvements in the accumulation of organic nutrients as well as the contents of abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA). Additionally, an increase in POD activity and lignin content was observed in the treatment, especially during the middle period of the rapid growth period. Transcriptome analysis revealed that two POD multigene family members, LOC123198833 and LOC123225298, were significantly upregulated under enhanced UV-B radiation, which was further validated through qPCR. In general, enhanced UV-B radiation triggered a defence response in biological tissue by upregulating POD genes, which can effectively help to scavenge excess ROS. Full article

The impact of Oedema Disease produced by Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) in swine is increasing in some production countries due to increasing limitations on treatment with antimicrobials and zinc oxide, either because of the increased prevalence of multi-resistant strains or because of legal restrictions. The main pathological effect of Shiga toxin 2e is represented by damage to the endothelial cells of the blood vessel walls, leading to liquid extravasation and oedema formation in multiple tissues. These oedemas are generally easily identifiable in acute clinical cases. However, disease caused by Shiga toxin can occur without any externally visible oedema in the pigs, as observed in the subclinical presentation of Oedema Disease. It also causes productive losses, so it is important to identify and/or diagnose cases to set up control measures in order to optimize production and health. This article includes a comprehensive review of lesions and signs caused by Shiga toxin toxicosis in pigs, as well as other insights about the aetiology and epidemiology of STEC in pigs, and the effect of Shiga toxin recombinant toxoid vaccines in reducing these clinical and subclinical signs under field conditions. The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Among Adults in the United States

Background/Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver disease. It has known multifactorial pathophysiology, but the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on the rising prevalence of MASLD is poorly understood. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study to examine the influence of SDOH on MASLD using nationwide data from the 2017–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study. Methods: We identified participants with MASLD based on liver ultrasound-based controlled attenuation parameter measurements consistent with diagnostic guidelines. We then used logistic regression models to examine associations between SDOH variables and MASLD, with a pre-specified focus on education and income, sequentially adjusting for sociodemographic factors, medical comorbidities, and other SDOH. Results: Our study found that higher education (odds ratio [OR] 0.77, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.62–0.97, p = 0.024) but not higher income (OR 1.12, 95% CI 0.91–1.37, p = 0.3) was associated with lower odds of MASLD in multivariable adjusted models. We also identified a significant interaction between education level and food security, as well as interactions between food security and other significant SDOH. In the stratified analyses, higher education was significantly associated with lower odds of MASLD among participants with food security (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.55–0.91, p = 0.007) but not among those with food insecurity (OR 1.26, 95% CI 0.76–2.11, p = 0.4). Conclusions: Our findings identify the potential impact of SDOH on odds of MASLD and suggest increased importance of food security relative to other SDOH. Full article

Decline in Serum Lysophosphatidylcholine Species in Patients with Severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Background/Objectives: Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) is composed of various lipid species, some of which exert pro-inflammatory and others anti-inflammatory activities. However, most of the LPC species analyzed to date are reduced in the serum of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) compared to healthy controls. To our knowledge, the correlation between serum LPC species levels and measures of inflammation, as well as their potential as markers for monitoring IBD activity, has not yet been investigated. Methods: Thirteen LPC species, varying in acyl chain length and number of double bonds, were measured in the serum of 16 controls and the serum of 57 patients with IBD. Associations with C-reactive protein (CRP) and fecal calprotectin levels as markers of IBD severity were assessed. Results: Serum levels of LPC species did not differ between the healthy controls and the entire patient cohort. In patients with IBD, serum levels of LPC 16:1, 18:0, 18:3, 20:3, and 20:5, as well as total LPC concentrations, showed inverse correlations with both CRP and fecal calprotectin levels, indicating an association with inflammatory activity. Nine LPC species were significantly reduced in patients with high fecal calprotectin compared to those with low values. LPC species with 22 carbon atoms and 4 to 6 double bonds were not related to disease activity. Stool consistency and gastrointestinal symptoms did not influence serum LPC profiles. Corticosteroid treatment was associated with lower serum LPC 20:3 and 22:5 levels, while mesalazine, anti-TNF, and anti-IL-12/23 therapies had no significant impact on LPC concentrations. There was a strong positive correlation between LPC species containing 15 to 18 carbon atoms and serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and phosphatidylcholine levels. However, there was no correlation with markers of liver disease. Conclusions: Shorter-chain LPC species are reduced in patients with active IBD and reflect underlying hypolipidemia. While these lipid alterations provide insight into IBD-associated metabolic changes, they appear unsuitable as diagnostic or disease monitoring biomarkers. Full article

Optimizing Multi-Cluster Fracture Propagation and Mitigating Interference Through Advanced Non-Uniform Perforation Design in Shale Gas Horizontal Wells

The persistent challenge of fracture-driven interference (FDI) during large-scale hydraulic fracturing in the southern Sichuan Basin has severely compromised shale gas productivity, while the existing research has inadequately addressed both FDI risk reductions and the optimization of reservoir stimulation. To bridge this gap, this study developed a mechanistic model of the competitive multi-cluster fracture propagation under non-uniform perforation conditions and established a perforation-based design methodology for the mitigation of horizontal well interference. The results demonstrate that spindle-shaped perforations enhance the uniformity of fracture propagation by 20.3% and 35.1% compared to that under uniform and trapezoidal perforations, respectively, with the perforation quantity (48) and diameter (10 mm) identified as the dominant control parameters for balancing multi-cluster growth. Through a systematic evaluation of the fracture communication mechanisms, three distinct inter-well types of FDI were identified: Type I (natural fracture–stress anisotropy synergy), Type II (natural-fracture-dominated), and Type III (stress-anisotropy-dominated). To mitigate these, customized perforation schemes coupled with geometry-optimized fracture layouts were developed. The surveillance data for the offset well show that the pressure interference decreased from 14.95 MPa and 6.23 MPa before its application to 0.7 MPa and 0 MPa, achieving an approximately 95.3% reduction in the pressure interference in the application wells. Recently, essential rose oils and rose products have gained increasing importance in both the cosmetic and food industries, as well as in the composition of medicinal products. We investigated the in vitro antiviral activity of essential oil and floral water from Rosa damascena Mill against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection in rabbit retinal cells (RRCs). The composition of the main chemical components in the rose essential oil was determined by means of gas chromatographic analysis. The effect on the viral replication cycle was determined using the cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay. The virucidal activity, the effect on the adsorption stage of the virus to the host cell, and the protective effect on healthy cells were evaluated using the endpoint dilution method. The effects were determined as deviation in the viral titer, Δlg, for the treated cells from the one for the untreated viral control. The identified main active components of rose oil are geraniol (28.73%), citronellol (21.50%), nonadecane (13.13%), nerol (5.51%), heneicosane (4.87%), nonadecene (3.93), heptadecane (2.29), farnesol (2.11%), tricosane (1.29%), eicosane (1.01%), and eugenol (0.85%). The results demonstrated that both rose products do not have a significant effect on the virus replication but directly affect the viral particles and reduce the viral titer by Δlg = 3.25 for floral water and by Δlg = 3.0 for essential oil. Significant inhibition of the viral adsorption stage was also observed, leading to a decrease in the viral titers by Δlg = 2.25 for floral water and by Δlg = 2.0 for essential oil. When pretreating healthy cells with rose products, both samples significantly protected them from subsequent infection with HSV-1. This protective effect was more pronounced for the oil (Δlg = 2.5) compared to the one for the floral water (Δlg = 2.0). We used the in silico molecular docking method to gain insight into the mechanism of hindrance of viral adsorption by the main rose oil compounds (geraniol, citronellol, nerol). These components targeted the HSV-1 gD interaction surface with nectin-1 and HVEM (Herpesvirus Entry Mediator) host cell receptors, at N-, C-ends, and N-end, respectively. These findings could provide a structural framework for further development of anti-HSV-1 therapeutics. Full article

Background/Objectives: While intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is the standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) within 4.5 h of symptom onset, many patients present beyond this time window. Recent trials suggest that IVT may be both effective and safe in selected patients treated after the standard time window. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Scopus, and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomized-controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and individual patient-data meta-analyses (IPDMs) of RCTs comparing IVT plus best medical treatment (BMT) to BMT alone in AIS patients who were last-known-well more than 4.5 h earlier. The primary efficacy outcome was a 90-day excellent functional outcome [modified Rankin Scale (mRS)-scores of 0–1]. Secondary efficacy outcomes included good functional outcome (mRS-scores 0–2) and reduced disability (≥1-point reduction across all mRS-strata). The primary safety outcome was symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH); secondary safety outcomes were any ICH and 3-month all-cause mortality. Subgroup analyses were performed stratified by different thrombolytics, time-windows, imaging modalities, and affected circulation. Results: Nine studies were included, comprising 1660 patients in the IVT-group and 1626 patients in the control-group. IVT significantly improved excellent functional outcome (RR = 1.24; 95%CI:1.14–1.34; I2 = 0%) and good functional outcome (RR = 1.18; 95%CI:1.05–1.33; I2 = 70%). IVT was associated with increased odds of reduced disability (common OR = 1.3; 95%CI:1.15–1.46; I2 = 0%) and increased risk of sICH (RR = 2.75; 95%CI:1.49–5.05; I2 = 0%). The rates of any ICH and all-cause mortality were similar between the two groups. No significant subgroup differences were documented. Conclusions: IVT in the extended time window improved functional outcomes without increasing mortality, despite a higher rate of sICH. Full article

Phytoalexins are antimicrobial compounds of diverse chemical classes whose production is triggered in plants in response to pathogen infection. This study demonstrated that spraying with a celery flavonoid-rich extract (CFRE) or a spinach flavonoid-rich extract (SFRE) enhanced the production of phytoalexins in cucumber leaves artificially infected with powdery mildew incited by Podosphaera fusca. High-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis revealed a noticeable increase in the content of phenolic acids, including caffeic acid, ellagic acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, and syringic acid, as well as the flavonoid rutin in both non-inoculated and inoculated leaves of cucumber seedlings treated with CFRE and SFRE, compared to healthy untreated leaves used as a control. Fluorescence microscopy revealed the accumulation of phenolic acid compounds in chloroplasts and at the periphery of epidermal cells. Overall, results suggest the reduced severity of P. fusca infection following the application of CFRE and SFRE in cucumber leaves could be due, at least in part, to the production of phytoalexins of polyphenolic nature. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms of systemic resistance induced by CFRE and SFRE. Moreover, they confirm these two natural flavonoid-rich products could be promising alternatives to synthetic chemical fungicides for the safe and ecofriendly control of cucumber powdery mildew. This study investigates the mechanical, tribological, and electrochemical behaviour of a novel precipitation-hardenable martensitic alloy produced by selective laser melting (SLM). The alloy was specifically engineered with an optimised composition, free from cobalt and molybdenum, and featuring reduced nickel content (7 wt.%) and 8 wt.% chromium. It has been developed as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional maraging steels, while maintaining high mechanical strength and a refined microstructure tailored to the steep thermal gradients inherent to the SLM process. Several ageing heat treatments were assessed to evaluate their influence on microstructure, hardness, tensile strength, retained austenite content, dislocation density, as well as wear behaviour (pin-on-disc test) and corrosion resistance (polarisation curves in 3.5%NaCl). The results indicate that ageing at 540 °C for 2 h offers an optimal combination of hardness (550–560 HV), tensile strength (~1700 MPa), microstructural stability, and wear resistance, with a 90% improvement compared to the as-built condition. In contrast, ageing at 600 °C for 1 h enhances ductility and corrosion resistance (Rp = 462.2 kΩ; Ecorr = –111.8 mV), at the expense of a higher fraction of reverted austenite (~34%) and reduced hardness (450 HV). This study demonstrates that the mechanical, surface, and electrochemical performance of this novel SLM-produced alloy can be effectively tailored through controlled thermal treatments, offering promising opportunities for demanding applications requiring a customised balance of strength, durability, and corrosion behaviour.
