Retired lithium-ion batteries retain considerable residual value for second-life energy storage applications, but significant variations in health conditions and complex operating scenarios make accurate remaining useful life (RUL) prediction challenging. To address the limited availability of capacity measurements and the poor adaptability of conventional models to dynamically fluctuating degradation trajectories, a hybrid RUL prediction framework integrating Wavelet Packet Energy Entropy (WPEE), a Fractional-Order Grey Model (FGM), and an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) is proposed. WPEE extracted from discharge voltage signals is employed as a degradation indicator, while a Box–Cox transformation enhances its correlation with capacity. An Adaptive Mutation Particle Swarm Optimization (AMPSO) algorithm is used to determine the optimal fractional-order parameter, and the optimized FGM is incorporated into the UKF state-transition process for recursive state correction. Validation was conducted using four retired lithium-ion cells and two series-connected battery packs with different health conditions at prediction starting points of 20, 25, and 30 cycles. The results show that the proposed method effectively tracks degradation evolution, with RUL prediction errors within 7 cycles for retired cells and within 6 cycles for battery packs. Across all 18 prediction cases, FGM–UKF achieved an overall mean AE of 3.111 cycles, lower than those of FGM (5.111 cycles), GM(1, 1) (4.000 cycles), and LR (4.278 cycles). These results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed framework for lifetime assessment in second-life battery energy storage systems. Full article

Classification of ground and low-altitude targets in radar remote sensing is challenging because environmental clutter and noise can significantly degrade the discriminability of target echoes, especially under complex outdoor observation conditions. To improve the classification performance for humans, vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), this paper proposes a velocity-aware multi-feature fusion method based on measured radar echo data. First, radar echoes are preprocessed using a wavelet-decomposition-based strategy to suppress clutter and noise while preserving useful target information. Then, multiple complementary features, including wavelet packet energy distribution, spectral entropy, spectral standard deviation, temporal standard deviation, amplitude dispersion coefficient, and relative radar cross-section (RCS), are extracted to characterize the target echoes from different perspectives. Considering the influence of target velocity on Doppler distribution and class separability, the measured data are further divided into different velocity intervals for stratified classification. Based on the fused feature vectors, a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is employed to model feature relationships and perform target classification. Experiments conducted on real measured radar echo data demonstrate that the proposed method achieves classification accuracies of 97.82% for UAVs, 96.00% for vehicles, and a mean interval-level accuracy of 96.94%, indicating its effectiveness for ground and low-altitude target classification in cluttered radar remote sensing environments. Acoustic emission detection technology is widely employed for leakage detection in water supply systems. However, this approach heavily relies on extensive field data to develop feature extraction and analysis models. Since field data cannot comprehensively cover all operational conditions—such as variations in pressure, pipe diameter, and leakage size—the limited generalization capability of these models often results in high rates of false negatives and false positives. To address these issues, this study utilizes Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to analyze leakage flow fields, establishing correlations between diverse operating conditions and flow field characteristics, including the areas of negative pressure zones and pressure pulsations. Based on these flow field findings, Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA) is applied to analyze the acoustic radiation field at leakage locations, thus clarifying the sound generation mechanisms of leakage-related acoustic signals, demonstrating strong agreement between simulation results and experimental data. Furthermore, wavelet packet energy ratio, centroid frequency, and frequency entropy are extracted as key feature parameters. A leakage detection model based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) is subsequently developed, achieving an accuracy of 98.6% across a wide range of operating conditions. This research enhances the capability for high-accuracy leakage detection with limited field data, offering valuable technical insights for the development of low-computation and low-hardware-cost leakage detection systems. Transformer reliability is crucial to grid security, with core loosening a common fault. This paper proposes a transformer core loosening fault diagnosis method based on a fusion feature extraction approach and Categorical Boosting (CatBoost) optimized by the Crested Porcupine Optimizer (CPO) algorithm. Firstly, the audio signal is decomposed into six Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF) components through Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD). This paper utilizes Gaussian membership functions to quantify the energy proportion, central frequency, and kurtosis of IMF and constructs a fuzzy entropy discrimination function. Then, the IMF noise components are removed through an adaptive threshold. Subsequently, the denoised signal undergoes a wavelet packet transform instead of a short-time Fourier transform to optimize Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (WPT-MFCC), combining time-domain statistical features and frequency-band energy distribution to form a 24-dimensional fusion feature. Finally, the CatBoost algorithm is employed to validate the effects of different feature schemes. The CPO is introduced to optimize its iteration number, learning rate, tree depth, and random strength parameters, thereby enhancing overall performance. The CPO-optimized CatBoost model had 99.0196% fault recognition accuracy in experimental testing, 15% better than the standard CatBoost. Accuracy exceeded 90% even under extreme 0 dB noise. This method makes fault diagnosis more accurate and reliable. Full article

As critical components of planetary gearboxes, gears directly affect mechanical system reliability when faults occur. Traditional feature extraction methods exhibit limitations in accurately identifying fault characteristics and achieving satisfactory diagnostic accuracy. This research is concerned with the gear of the planetary gearbox and proposes a new approach termed multi-scale wavelet packet energy entropy (MSWPEE) for extracting gear fault features. The signal is split into sub-signals at three different scale factors. Following decomposition and reconstruction using the wavelet packet algorithm, the wavelet packet energy entropy for each node is computed under different operating conditions. A feature vector is formed by combining the wavelet packet energy entropy at different scale factors. Furthermore, this study proposes a method combining multi-scale wavelet packet energy entropy with extreme learning machine (MSWPEE-ELM). The experimental findings validate the precision of this approach in extracting features and diagnosing faults in sun gears with varying degrees of tooth breakage severity. Full article

Wearable laser Doppler devices are susceptible to complex noise interferences, such as Gaussian white noise, baseline drift, and motion artifacts, with motion artifacts significantly impacting clinical diagnostic accuracy. Addressing the limitations of existing denoising methods—including traditional adaptive filtering that relies on prior noise information, modal decomposition techniques that depend on empirical parameter optimization and are prone to modal aliasing, wavelet threshold functions that struggle to balance signal preservation with smoothness, and the high computational complexity of deep learning approaches—this paper proposes an ISSA-VMD-AWPTD denoising algorithm. This innovative approach integrates an improved sparrow search algorithm (ISSA), variational mode decomposition (VMD), and adaptive wavelet packet threshold denoising (AWPTD). The ISSA is enhanced through cubic chaotic mapping, butterfly optimization, and sine–cosine search strategies, targeting the minimization of the envelope entropy of modal components for adaptive optimization of VMD’s decomposition levels and penalty factors. A correlation coefficient-based selection mechanism is employed to separate target and mixed modes effectively, allowing for the efficient removal of noise components. Additionally, an exponential adaptive threshold function is introduced, combining wavelet packet node energy proportion analysis to achieve efficient signal reconstruction. By leveraging the rapid convergence property of ISSA (completing parameter optimization within five iterations), the computational load of traditional VMD is reduced while maintaining the denoising accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that for a 200 Hz test signal, the proposed algorithm achieves a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 24.47 dB, an improvement of 18.8% over the VMD method (20.63 dB), and a root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of 0.0023, a reduction of 69.3% compared to the VMD method (0.0075). The processing results for measured human blood flow signals achieve an SNR of 24.11 dB, a RMSE of 0.0023, and a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.92, all outperforming other algorithms, such as VMD and WPTD. This study effectively addresses issues related to parameter sensitivity and incomplete noise separation in traditional methods, providing a high-precision and low-complexity real-time signal processing solution for wearable devices. However, the parameter optimization still needs improvement when dealing with large datasets. Full article

Aiming at the complex internal working conditions of steel-reinforced concrete structures, this paper proposes an active detection method for the internal hollow defects of steel-reinforced concrete based on wave analysis by using the driving and sensing functions of piezoelectric ceramic materials. The feasibility was verified through the single-condition detection test, revealing the propagation and attenuation characteristics of the stress wave signal under various detection conditions, and it was applied to the damage identification of steel-reinforced concrete rectangular section columns. Combined with the wavelet packet energy theory, the data processing of the original detection signal is carried out based on composite weighting by energy distribution entropy. Finally, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was introduced to study the weight vectors of different damage metrics on the detection signal, and a linear regression model based on different damage metrics was proposed as the comprehensive defect evaluation index. The research results show that the detection of internal defects in steel-reinforced concrete structures based on piezoelectric technology is applicable to concrete of different strength grades. With the increase of the detection distance and the degree of damage, the energy of the stress wave signal decreases. For example, under defect-free conditions, the energy value of the stress wave signal with a detection distance of 400 mm decreases by 92.94% compared to that with a detection distance of 100 mm. Meanwhile, it can be known from the defect detection test results of steel-reinforced concrete columns that the wavelet packet energy value under the defect condition with three obstacles decreased by 85.42% compared with the barrier-free condition, and the defect evaluation index (DI) gradually increased from 0 to 0.859. The comprehensive application of piezoelectric technology and weight analysis methods has achieved qualitative and quantitative analysis of defects, providing reference value for the maintenance and repair of steel-reinforced concrete structures. In the electric locomotive traction transmission system, a four-quadrant rectifier has a high fault rate owing to the complicated control and bad operating conditions, and the fault directly affects the system’s safety and stability. To address such an issue, a rectifier fault diagnosis approach regarding a local tangent space alignment (LTSA) dimensionality reduction to optimize the high-dimensional energy entropy feature is proposed. Firstly, the fault signal is analyzed by using different wavelet functions through wavelet packet multi-resolution decomposition technology so as to extract the frequency band information of the signal. Each wavelet function corresponds to a specific frequency band; the energy–information entropy ratio of each frequency band coefficient is calculated, and then, the wavelet function and optimal frequency band, which are appropriate for the fault signal, are determined. Secondly, the energy entropy of each coefficient in the optimal frequency band is calculated to form the high-dimensional energy entropy feature. The LTSA algorithm is adopted to optimize the high-dimensional feature, through the fault sample number and clustering results, solve the difficulty of selecting the inherent dimension and nearest neighbor number in high-dimensional data, and obtain the simple and effective low-dimensional feature vector to describe the fault features, which reduces the conflict and redundancy between features. Finally, the optimized fault features are used as an input to the classifier support vector machine (SVM), and the fault types are obtained through training and testing. To validate the efficacy of the presented approach, it is tested from the aspects of noise environment, sample proportion and algorithm complexity, and compared with advanced methods. The results indicate that the proposed technique attains an average accuracy of 99.0625% in four-quadrant rectifier fault diagnosis. Under a different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and different training and test ratios, the average value after 30 diagnoses is better. Compared with other methods, this method shows a high diagnostic rate and strong robustness in terms of output voltage, noise, training and test ratio. Full article

With the emphasis on energy conversion and energy-saving technologies, the single-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier method is widely used in urban rail transit because of its advantages of bidirectional electric energy conversion and higher power factor. However, due to the complex control and harsh environment, it can easily fail. Faults can cause current and voltage distortion, harmonic increases and other problems, which can threaten the safety of the power system and the train. In order to ensure the stable operation of the rectifier, incidences of faults should be reduced. A fault diagnosis technique based on Euclidean norm fusion multi-frequency bands and multi-scale permutation entropy is proposed. Firstly, by the optimal wavelet function, information on the optimal multi-frequency bands of the fault signal is selected after wavelet packet decomposition. Secondly, the multi-scale permutation entropy of each frequency band is calculated, and multiple fault feature vectors are obtained for each frequency band. To reduce the classifier’s computational cost, the Euclidean norm is used to fuse the multi-scale permutation entropy into an entropy value, so that each frequency band uses an entropy value to characterize the fault information features. Finally, the optimal multi-frequency bands and multi-scale permutation entropy after fusion are used as the fault feature vector. In the simulation system, it is shown that the method’s average accuracy is 78.46%, 97.07%, and 99.45% when the SNR is 5 dB, 10 dB, and 15 dB, respectively. And the fusion of multi-scale permutation entropy can improve the accuracy, recall rate, precision, and F1 score and reduce the False Alarm Rate (FAR) and the Missing Alarm Rate (MAR). The results show that the fault diagnosis method has high diagnosis accuracy, is a simple feature fusion method, and has good robustness to working conditions and noise. Full article

Under heavy load conditions, bearings are subjected to non-uniform and frequently changing loads, which leads to randomness in the spatial distribution of bearing degradation characteristics. Aiming at the problem that the traditional degradation index cannot accurately reflect the degradation state of heavy-duty bearings in the whole life cycle, a new degradation evaluation method based on multi-domain features is proposed in this paper, which aims to capture the early degradation point of heavy-duty bearings and characterize their degradation trend. Firstly, the energy entropy feature is obtained by improving the wavelet packet decomposition, and the original multi-domain feature set is constructed by combining the time domain and frequency domain features. Then, the optimal feature matrix is formed by using the comprehensive evaluation index. Finally, integrating probability and distance information, a comprehensive degradation index was constructed to evaluate the degradation, determine the initial degradation time, and quantitatively analyze the bearing degradation state. The validity of the proposed method is verified in two datasets. The proposed method can accurately identify the early degradation of bearings and track the state of bearing degradation, so as to realize the degradation assessment. Full article

Due to real-time fluctuations in wind farm output, large-scale renewable energy (RE) generation poses significant challenges to power system stability. To address this issue, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based electric hydrogen hybrid storage (EHHS) strategy to mitigate wind power fluctuations (WPFs). First, a wavelet packet power decomposition algorithm based on variable frequency entropy improvement is proposed. This algorithm characterizes the energy characteristics of the original wind power in different frequency bands. Second, to minimize WPF and the comprehensive operating cost of EHHS, an optimization model for suppressing wind power in the integrated power and hydrogen system (IPHS) is constructed. Next, considering the real-time and stochastic characteristics of wind power, the wind power smoothing model is transformed into a Markov decision process. A modified proximal policy optimization (MPPO) based on wind power deviation is proposed for training and solving. Based on the DRL agent’s real-time perception of wind power energy characteristics and the IPHS operation status, a WPF smoothing strategy is formulated. Finally, a numerical analysis based on a specific wind farm is conducted. The simulation results based on MATLAB R2021b show that the proposed strategy effectively suppresses WPF and demonstrates excellent convergence stability. The comprehensive performance of the MPPO is improved by 21.25% compared with the proximal policy optimization (PPO) and 42.52% compared with MPPO. Full article

The massive integration of distributed renewable energy sources and nonlinear power electronic equipment has given rise to power quality issues such as waveform distortion, voltage instability, and increased harmonic components. Nowadays, the pollution of power quality is becoming increasingly severe, posing a potential threat to the security of the power grid and the stable operation of electrical equipment. Due to the presence of significant noise interference in the collected signals, existing methods still face issues such as low accuracy in disturbance identification and high computational complexity. To address these problems, this paper proposes a hybrid data-driven strategy that can significantly improve the accuracy and speed of identification. Firstly, the wavelet packet transform (WPT) method is employed to denoise the power disturbance signals. Subsequently, the local mean decomposition (LMD) algorithm is used to adaptively decompose the nonlinear and complex time series into multiple product function components. Feature extraction of the disturbance signals is then achieved by calculating entropy values after local mean decomposition, and a feature matrix is constructed from the entropy values of each component for analysis in disturbance identification. Finally, an extreme learning machine (ELM) is employed for the identification and classification of transient power disturbance signals. The verification of numerical examples demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in this paper. Full article

High-voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs) handle the important tasks of controlling and safeguarding electricity networks. In the case of insufficient data samples, improving the accuracy of the traditional HVCB mechanical fault diagnosis method is difficult, so it poses challenges in meeting performance requirements for mechanical fault diagnosis. In this study, a HVCB fault diagnosis method is introduced. It utilizes a combination of grey wolf optimization (GWO) and multi-grained cascade forest (gcForest) algorithms to resolve these issues and improve the accuracy of HVCB mechanical fault diagnosis. To simplify the original vibration signal, the input feature quantity for the fault diagnosis method is obtained by calculating the energy entropy of the wavelet packet decomposition. The GWO algorithm is employed to optimize the parameters of the gcForest model, leading to identification of the optimum parameter configuration. Subsequently, the diagnostic effect in the case of a small sample size was analyzed through a VS1 vacuum circuit breaker example, and the accuracy reached 95.89%. In the case of unbalanced samples, further analysis and comparison with different methods confirm the feasibility and efficiency of the combination of GWO and gcForest algorithms. Recent advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT) wearable devices such as wearable inertial sensors have increased the demand for precise human activity recognition (HAR) with minimal computational resources. The wavelet transform, which offers excellent time-frequency localization characteristics, is well suited for HAR recognition systems. Selecting a mother wavelet function in wavelet analysis is critical, as optimal selection improves the recognition performance. The activity time signals data have different periodic patterns that can discriminate activities from each other. Therefore, selecting a mother wavelet function that closely resembles the shape of the recognized activity’s sensor (inertial) signals significantly impacts recognition performance. This study uses an optimal mother wavelet selection method that combines wavelet packet transform with the energy-to-Shannon-entropy ratio and two classification algorithms: decision tree (DT) and support vector machines (SVM). We examined six different mother wavelet families with different numbers of vanishing points. Our experiments were performed on eight publicly available ADL datasets: MHEALTH, WISDM Activity Prediction, HARTH, HARsense, DaLiAc, PAMAP2, REALDISP, and HAR70+. The analysis demonstrated in this paper can be used as a guideline for optimal mother wavelet selection for human activity recognition. Full article

Prestressed steel strands in prestressed structures offset or reduce the tensile stress caused by external loads, making them the primary load-bearing components. Great concerns have been raised about prestress monitoring due to the growing use of structural health monitoring (SHM). Piezoceramic (PZT) active sensing methods are commonly used in this field. However, there appears to be a problem of “energy saturation” in the utilization of piezoceramic active sensing methods. In this study, a smart anchor washer with semi-cylinders was developed to alleviate the saturation problem. An intelligent monitoring system is formed by combining the upper and lower annular cylinders with two piezoelectric patches. The piezoelectric patch on the upper annular cylinder is used as an actuator to emit signals through the contact interface of the smart anchor washer, which are then received by the piezoelectric patch on the lower annular cylinder. Based on wavelet packet decomposition, we investigate the correlation between the energy of the received signal and the applied tension force. Finally, a prestressing force index is developed for monitoring prestressing force using Shannon entropy. It is found that the index decreases with the increase in tension. The proposed design and index are also sensitive to early monitoring of prestressing force and can be used to monitor the entire prestressing process of steel strands. Full article
