The aim of this paper is to tailor the geometry and material parameters of a three-layer railway track model to achieve favorable properties for the circulation of high-speed trains at very high velocities. The three layers imply that the model should have three critical velocities for resonance. However, in many cases, some of these values are missing and must be replaced by pseudo-critical values. Since no resonance occurs at pseudo-critical velocities, even in the absence of damping, deflections never reach infinity. By using optimization techniques, it is possible to adjust the model’s parameters, so that the increase in vibrations remains minimal and does not pose a real danger. In this way, circulation velocities could be extended beyond the critical value, thereby increasing the network capacity and, consequently, improving the competitiveness of rail transport compared to other modes of transportation, thus contributing to decarbonization. The presented results are preliminary and require further analysis and validation. Several optimization techniques are implemented, leading to the establishment of designs that already have rather high pseudo-critical velocities. Further research will show how these theoretical findings can be utilized in practice. Full article

Polyurethane foam is widely used as a primary filling material in car seats. While it provides good damping and energy absorption, the mechanical properties are complex but play a vital role in vibration attenuation and vehicle ride comfort. This study proposes a comprehensive experimental and analytical method to characterize the visco-hyperelastic properties of seat-grade polyurethane foam. Quasi-static and dynamic compression tests were conducted on foam blocks to obtain load–deflection curves and dynamic stiffness. A visco-hyperelastic material model was developed, where the hyperelastic response was derived via the hereditary integral and difference-stress method, and viscoelastic behavior was captured using a Prony series fitted to dynamic stiffness data. The model was validated using finite element simulations, showing good agreement with experimental results in both static and dynamic conditions. The proposed method enables accurate characterization of the visco-hyperelastic material properties of seat-grade polyurethane foam. Full article

Concrete structures increasingly face dynamic loading conditions, such as seismic events, vehicular traffic, and environmental vibrations, necessitating enhanced energy dissipation capabilities. The damping ratio, a critical parameter quantifying a material’s ability to dissipate vibrational energy, is typically low in conventional concrete, prompting extensive research into strategies for improvement. This review comprehensively explores the impact of advanced concrete types—such as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs), Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC), High-Performance Concrete (HPC), and polymer concrete—on enhancing the damping behavior. Additionally, key mix design innovations, including fiber reinforcement, rubber powder incorporation, and aggregate modification, are evaluated for their roles in increasing energy dissipation. External factors, particularly curing conditions, are also discussed for their influence on the damping performance. The findings consolidate experimental and theoretical insights into how material composition, mix design, and external treatments interact to optimize dynamic resilience. To guide future research, this paper identifies critical gaps including the need for multi-scale numerical simulation frameworks, standardized damping test protocols, and long-term performance evaluation under realistic service conditions. Advancing work in material innovation, optimized mix design, and controlled curing environments will be essential for developing next-generation concretes with superior vibration control, durability, and sustainability. These insights provide a strategic foundation for applications in seismic-prone and vibration-sensitive infrastructure. Full article

In engineering structures, damping materials are an effective way to improve vibration characteristics, but they can significantly increase the weight and cost of the structure. In this study, based on the variable density topology optimization algorithm, combined with finite element simulation and experimental validation, the vibration damping performance of a composite structure with steel plate and damping material is optimized. With the objective of minimizing the resonance response and the constraint of damping material volume, the material distribution of the damping layer is optimized, and the amount of damping material used is successfully reduced by 31.2%. By building a test rig and comparing the vibration responses under the three working conditions of no damping, full damping coverage, and optimized damping, the effectiveness of the optimization strategy is verified, and a significant reduction in vibration response is achieved. This study provides an innovative solution for lightweight design and cost control in engineering. Full article

Medical phantoms are essential to imaging calibration, clinician training, and the validation of therapeutic procedures. However, most ultrasound phantoms prioritize acoustic realism while neglecting the viscoelastic and anisotropic properties of fibrous soft tissues. This gap limits their effectiveness in modeling realistic biomechanical behavior, especially in wave-based diagnostics and therapeutic ultrasound. Current materials like gelatine and agarose fall short in reproducing the complex interplay between the solid and fluid components found in biological tissues. To address this, we developed a soft, anisotropic composite whose dynamic mechanical properties resemble fibrous biological tissues such as skin and skeletal muscle. This material enables wave propagation and vibration studies in controllably anisotropic media, which are rare and highly valuable. We demonstrate the tunability of damping and stiffness aligned with fiber orientation, providing a versatile platform for modeling soft-tissue dynamics and validating biomechanical simulations. The phantoms achieved Young’s moduli of 7.16–11.04 MPa for skin and 0.494–1.743 MPa for muscles, shear wave speeds of 1.51–5.93 m/s, longitudinal wave speeds of 1086–1127 m/s, and sound absorption coefficients of 0.13–0.76 dB/cm/MHz, with storage, loss, and complex moduli reaching 1.035–6.652 kPa, 0.1831–0.8546 kPa, and 2.138–10.82 kPa. These values reveal anisotropic response patterns analogous to native tissues. This novel natural fibrous composite system affords sustainable, low-cost ultrasound phantoms that support both mechanical fidelity and acoustic realism. Our approach offers a route to next-gen tissue-mimicking phantoms for elastography, wave propagation studies, and dynamic calibration across diverse clinical and research applications. Full article

The design of the suspension system affects handling and stability, vibrations of the steered wheels, vehicle ride comfort, and tyre tread wear. One of the most important vibration parameters is acceleration; high acceleration values can have an adverse effect on both the driver and passengers, as well as on the components of the vehicle’s suspension and handling. This paper presents the results of the effects of acceleration on the components of a front-independent MacPherson suspension system. Data on the accelerations were obtained from theoretical and experimental studies. A simulation study was conducted, taking into account the elastic and damping characteristics of the elastic components. The experimental study was conducted under laboratory conditions by using a suspension tester, BEISSBARTH, and a measuring system developed with LabVIEW 2021 SP1 and MATLAB R2022b software. The experiments were conducted with different tyre pressures and by using bushings made from different materials. The experimental tests were conducted with two rubber bushings within the mounting of the arm, as well as a rubber bushing and a polyurethane bushing. The experimental results were compared and analyzed. Two theoretical models were considered: one is a mathematical model, and the other is a simulation model which uses the finite element method. The torsional, lateral, and axial vibrations that occur during drilling operations have negative effects on the drilling equipment. These negative effects can cause huge economic impacts, as the failure of drilling tools results in wasted materials, non-productive time, and substantial expenses for equipment repairs. Many researchers have tried to reduce these vibrations and have tested several models in their studies. In most of these models, the drill string used in oil wells behaves like a rotating torsion pendulum (mass spring), represented by different discs. The top drive (with the rotary table) and the BHA (with the drill pipes) have been considered together as a linear spring with constant torsional stiffness and torsional damping coefficients. In this article, three models with different degrees of freedom are considered, with the aim of analyzing the effect of variations in the stiffness and damping coefficients on the severity of torsional vibrations. A comparative study has been conducted between the three models for dynamic responses to parametric variation effects. To ensure the relevance of the considered models, the field data of torsional vibrations while drilling were used to support the modeling assumption and the designed simulation scenarios. The main novelty of this work is its rigorous comparative analysis of how the stiffness and damping coefficients influence the severity of torsional vibrations based on field measurements, which has a direct application in operational energy efficiency and equipment reliability. The results demonstrated that the variation of the damping coefficient does not significantly affect the severity of the torsional vibrations. However, it is highly recommended to consider all existing frictions in the tool string to obtain a reliable torsional vibration model that can reproduce the physical phenomenon of stick–slip. Furthermore, this study contributes to the improvement of operational energy efficiency and equipment reliability in fossil energy extraction processes. Full article

The global push for sustainable building practices has intensified the search for low-carbon, recyclable alternatives to traditional roofing materials. This study investigated the structural viability of corrugated panels fabricated from 100% post-consumer recycled HDPE and PP for roofing and cladding applications under real-world loading and environmental conditions. Promising main attributes include durability, corrosion resistance, and low environmental impact. Mechanical testing revealed a flexural strength of 8.4 MPa for rHDPE and 6.3 MPa for rPP. Under impact loading, rPP retained 53% of its initial strength, while rHDPE retained 28%, as validated by drop-weight and pendulum impact tests. Vibration testing (ASTM E1876) demonstrated that rPP exhibited 18% higher longitudinal damping, whereas rHDPE outperformed in out-of-plane vibration control. XRD and SEM-EDS confirmed distinct crystalline and morphological structures responsible for the observed behavior. Findings from this investigation, supported by prototype slab testing, confirm that integrating recycled plastics facilitates the creation of durable and sustainable building envelopes for circular construction practices. The dynamic control of vibrations in skyscrapers is a critical consideration in sustainable building design, particularly in response to environmental excitations such as wind impact or seismic activity. Effective vibration neutralisation plays a crucial role in providing the safety of high-rise buildings. This research introduces an innovative concept for an active vibration damper that operates based on fluid dynamic transport to adaptively alter a skyscraper’s natural frequency, thereby counteracting resonant vibrations. A distinctive feature of this system is an adjustable-length cable mechanism, allowing for the dynamic modification of the pendulum’s effective length in real time. The structure, based on cable length adjustment, enables the PTMD to precisely tune its natural frequency to variable excitation conditions, thereby improving damping during transient or resonance phenomena of the building’s dynamic behaviour. A comprehensive mathematical model based on Lagrangian mechanics outlines the governing equations for this system, capturing the interactions between pendulum motion, fluid flow, and the damping forces necessary to maintain stability. Simulation analyses examine the role of initial excitation frequency and variable damping coefficients, revealing critical insights into optimal damper performance under varied structural conditions. The findings indicate that the proposed pendulum damper effectively mitigates resonance risks, paving the way for sustainable skyscraper design through enhanced structural adaptability and resilience. This adaptive PTMD, featuring an adjustable-length cable, provides a solution for creating safe and energy-efficient skyscraper designs, aligning with sustainable architectural practices and advancing future trends in vibration management technology. The study presented in this article supports the development of modern skyscraper design, with a focus on dynamic vibration control for sustainability and structural safety. It combines advanced numerical modelling, data-driven control algorithms, and experimental validation. From a sustainability perspective, the proposed PTMD system reduces the need for oversized structural components by providing adaptive, efficient damping, thereby lowering material consumption and embedded carbon. Through dynamically retuning structural stiffness and mass, the proposed PTMD enhances resilience and energy efficiency in skyscrapers, lowers lifetime energy use associated with passive damping devices, and enhances occupant comfort. This aligns with global sustainability objectives and new-generation building standards. Full article

Magnetorheological (MR) foams represent a class of smart materials with unique tunable viscoelastic properties when subjected to external magnetic fields. Combining porous structures with embedded magnetic particles, these materials address challenges such as leakage and sedimentation, typically encountered in conventional MR fluids while offering advantages like lightweight design, acoustic absorption, high energy harvesting capability, and tailored mechanical responses. Despite their potential, challenges such as non-uniform particle dispersion, limited durability under cyclic loads, and suboptimal magneto-mechanical coupling continue to hinder their broader adoption. This review systematically addresses these issues by evaluating the synthesis methods (ex situ vs. in situ), microstructural design strategies, and the role of magnetic particle alignment under varying curing conditions. Special attention is given to the influence of material composition—including matrix types, magnetic fillers, and additives—on the mechanical and magnetorheological behaviors. While the primary focus of this review is on MR foams, relevant studies on MR elastomers, which share fundamental principles, are also considered to provide a broader context. Recent advancements are also discussed, including the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the rheological and magneto-mechanical behavior of MR materials, model complex device responses, and optimize material composition and processing conditions. AI applications in MR systems range from estimating shear stress, viscosity, and storage/loss moduli to analyzing nonlinear hysteresis, magnetostriction, and mixed-mode loading behavior. These data-driven approaches offer powerful new capabilities for material design and performance optimization, helping overcome long-standing limitations in conventional modeling techniques. Despite significant progress in MR foams, several challenges remain to be addressed, including achieving uniform particle dispersion, enhancing viscoelastic performance (storage modulus and MR effect), and improving durability under cyclic loading. Addressing these issues is essential for unlocking the full potential of MR foams in demanding applications where consistent performance, mechanical reliability, and long-term stability are crucial for safety, effectiveness, and operational longevity. By bridging experimental methods, theoretical modeling, and AI-driven design, this work identifies pathways toward enhancing the functionality and reliability of MR foams for applications in vibration damping, energy harvesting, biomedical devices, and soft robotics. Traditional magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) often suffer from limited modulus tunability and insufficient energy dissipation, which restrict their applications. This study prepared a novel composite material by an MR gel (MRG) embedded within the MRE, called the MRE encapsulating MRG, to synergistically enhance these properties. Annular and radial MRE encapsulating MRG configurations were fabricated using 3D-printed molds, and their dynamic mechanical performance was characterized under varying magnetic fields (0–1 T) via a rheometer. The results revealed that the composite materials demonstrated significantly improved magnetic-induced modulus and magnetorheological (MR) effects compared to conventional MREs. Specifically, the annular MRE encapsulating MRG exhibited a 238.47% increase in the MR effect and a 51.35% enhancement in the magnetic-induced modulus compared to traditional MREs. Correspondingly, the radial configuration showed respective improvements of 168.19% and 27.03%. Furthermore, both the annular and radial composites displayed superior energy dissipation capabilities, with loss factors 2.68 and 2.03 times greater than those of pure MREs, respectively. Dynamic response tests indicated that composite materials, particularly the annular MRE encapsulating MRG, achieve faster response times. These advancements highlight the composite’s potential for high-precision damping systems, vibration isolation, and adaptive control applications. Full article

The incorporation of advanced smart materials, such as shape memory alloys (SMAs), in civil engineering presents significant challenges, particularly in modeling their complex behavior. Traditional numerical SMA models often require material parameters that are difficult to estimate and validate. The objective of this paper is to introduce an equation-based approach to modeling the superelastic behavior of SMAs based on rheological models. The proposed phenomenological model accurately captures SMA superelasticity under isothermal conditions, with each material parameter directly correlated to data from standard mechanical experiments. Four modifications to the baseline rheological model are proposed, highlighting their impact on superelastic characteristics. The resulting constitutive relationships are expressed as non-linear ordinary differential equations, making them compatible with commercial finite element method (FEM) software through user-defined subroutines. The practical application of this modeling approach is demonstrated through the strengthening of a historical masonry wall subjected to seismic activity. Comparative analysis shows that ties incorporating SMA segments outperform traditional steel ties by reducing the potential damage and enhancing the structural performance. Additionally, the energy dissipation during the SMA phase transformation improves the damping of vibrations, further contributing to the stability of the structure. This study underscores the potential of SMA-based solutions in seismic retrofitting and highlights the advantages of equation-based modeling for practical engineering applications. Full article

The pressing issue of global warming has prompted industries to seek sustainable and renewable materials that can reduce the use of petroleum-based products. Natural fibers, as bio-based and environmentally friendly materials, offer a promising solution. In this study, ramie fiber, which is one of the strongest natural fibers, is used as reinforcement, and the mechanical properties of natural rubber composites are evaluated. The composites were fabricated using a vulcanizing technique at 150 °C, and the fibers were cut into different lengths (5 mm, 10 m, and 15 mm) and weights (15 g, 30 g, and 60 g). Mechanical performance tests, including tensile and tear strength and hardness, were conducted. The results showed that as fiber concentration increased, so did the curing time. Moreover, the composites with higher fiber concentration had higher strength. The composite with a 10 mm fiber length and 60 g weight showed the highest tensile strength (10.35 MPa). Maximum tear strength (52.51 kN/m) was achieved with 5 mm fiber length and 60 g weight. Hardness values reached up to 88 Shore A (10 mm fiber length and 60 g weight), indicating excellent wear resistance. The specimen with the highest tensile strength was subjected to scanning electron microscope analysis. The SEM analysis revealed that the composite had a ductile type of fracture with appreciable plastic deformation, confirming good fiber–matrix interaction. These findings underscore the potential of ramie fiber–reinforced natural rubber composites as sustainable, high-performance alternatives to petroleum-based materials in structural and vibration-damping applications. The growing demand for renewable energy has underscored the importance of wind power, with wind turbines playing a pivotal role in sustainable electricity generation. However, wind turbine blades are exposed to various challenges, particularly flow-induced vibrations (FIVs), including vortex-induced vibrations, flutter, and galloping, which significantly impact the performance, efficiency, reliability, and lifespan of turbines. This review presents an in-depth analysis of wind turbine blade technology, covering the fundamental principles of operation, aerodynamic characteristics, material selection, and failure mechanisms. It examines the effects of these vibrations on blade integrity and turbine performance, highlighting the need for effective vibration suppression techniques. The paper also discusses current advancements in maintenance strategies, including active and passive vibration control methods, sensor networks, and drone-based inspections, aimed at improving turbine reliability and reducing operational costs. Furthermore, emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI)-driven prognostic assessments and novel materials for vibration damping, are explored as potential solutions to enhance turbine performance. The review emphasizes the importance of continued research in addressing the challenges posed by FIVs, particularly for offshore turbines operating in harsh environments. Full article

MDO of Robotic Landing Gear Systems: A Hybrid Belt-Driven Compliant Mechanism for VTOL Drones Application

This paper addresses inherent limitations in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) undercarriages hindering vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities on uneven slopes and obstacles. Robotic landing gear (RLG) designs have been proposed to address these limitations; however, existing designs are typically limited to ground slopes of 6–15°, beyond which rollover would happen. Moreover, articulated RLG concepts come with added complexity and weight penalties due to multiple drivetrain components. Previous research has highlighted that even a minor 3-degree slope change can increase the dynamic rollover risks by 40%. Therefore, the design optimization of robotic landing gear for enhanced VTOL capabilities requires a multidisciplinary framework that integrates static analysis, dynamic simulation, and control strategies for operations on complex terrain. This paper presents a novel, hybrid, compliant, belt-driven, three-legged RLG system, supported by a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) methodology, aimed at achieving enhanced VTOL capabilities on uneven surfaces and moving platforms like ship decks. The proposed system design utilizes compliant mechanisms featuring a series of three-flexure hinges (3SFH), to reduce the number of articulated drivetrain components and actuators. This results in a lower system weight, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced durability, compared to earlier fully actuated, articulated, four-legged, two-jointed designs. Additionally, the compliant belt-driven actuation mitigates issues such as backlash, wear, and high maintenance, while enabling smoother torque transfer and improved vibration damping relative to earlier three-legged cable-driven four-bar link RLG systems. The use of lightweight yet strong materials—aluminum and titanium—enables the legs to bend 19 and 26.57°, respectively, without failure. An animated simulation of full-contact landing tests, performed using a proportional-derivative (PD) controller and ship deck motion input, validate the performance of the design. Simulations are performed for a VTOL UAV, with two flexible legs made of aluminum, incorporating circular flexure hinges, and a passive third one positioned at the tail. The simulation results confirm stable landings with a 2 s settling time and only 2.29° of overshoot, well within the FAA-recommended maximum roll angle of 2.9°. Compared to the single-revolute (1R) model, the implementation of the optimal 3R Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (PRBM) further improves accuracy by achieving a maximum tip deflection error of only 1.2%. It is anticipated that the proposed hybrid design would also offer improved durability and ease of maintenance, thereby enhancing functionality and safety in comparison with existing robotic landing gear systems.
