Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques are crucial for evaluating the condition of structures, enabling early maintenance interventions, and monitoring factors that could compromise structural integrity. Modal analysis studies the dynamic response of structures when subjected to vibrations, evaluating natural frequencies and vibration modes. This study focuses on detecting and comparing the natural frequencies of a 3-DoF structure under various excitation scenarios, including ambient vibration (in healthy and damaged conditions), two types of transient excitation, and three harmonic excitation variations. Signal processing techniques, specifically Power Spectral Density (PSD) and Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), were employed. Each method provides valuable insights into frequency and time-frequency domain analysis. Under ambient vibration excitation, the damaged condition exhibits spectral differences in amplitude and frequency compared to the undamaged state. For the transient excitations, the scalogram images reveal localized energetic differences in frequency components over time, whereas PSD alone cannot observe these behaviors. For the harmonic excitations, PSD provides higher spectral resolution, while CWT adds insight into temporal energy evolution near resonance bands. This study discusses how these analyses provide sensitive features for damage detection applications, as well as the influence of different excitation types on the natural frequencies of the structure. To develop solutions to the frequency instability and failure of silicon micromechanical resonant accelerometers, the state characteristics of micromechanical resonant accelerometers are investigated under temperature and vibration stresses. Through theoretical analysis and finite element simulation, the following is found: the Young’s modulus of silicon varies with temperature, causing a resonance frequency shift of −1.364 Hz/°C; the residual stress of temperature change affects the resonance frequency shift of the microstructure, causing it to be 5.43 Hz/MPa (tensile stress) and −5.25 Hz/MPa (compressive stress); thermal expansion triggers the failure of the bonding wire, and, in the range of 10 °C to 150 °C, the peak stress of the electrode/lead bond area increases from 83.2/85.6 MPa to 1.08/1.28 GPa. The failure mode under vibration stress is resonance structure fracture and interlayer peeling. An isolation frame design is proposed for the sensitive part of the microstructure, which reduces the frequency effects by 34% (tensile stress) and 15% (compressive stress) under temperature-variable residual stresses and the maximum value of the structural root mean square stresses by 69.7% (X-direction), 63.6% (Y-direction), and 71.3% (Z-direction) under vibrational stresses. The paper describes the vibration method of measuring the dynamic Young’s modulus for a ferromagnetic steel element. The parameters of vibrations at the resonant frequency induced by an external magnetic field are studied for an unmagnetized and magnetized steel element. A fiber optic reflective sensor is used to study the vibration parameters of this element. The dynamic Young’s modulus is determined from these studies. A theory describing the amplitude of vibrations of the tested sample induced by the interaction of a magnetic field is developed and used. The conclusions resulting from the studies using this method on the experimental stand are discussed and the scope of its further studies are proposed. Full article

A concentric double-flange butterfly valve (DN-500, PN-10) was analyzed to examine its dynamic behavior and internal fluid flow across multiple opening angles. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was employed to determine natural frequencies, mode shapes, and effective mass participation factors (EMPFs) for valve positions at 30°, 60°, and 90°. The valve geometry was discretized using a curvature-based mesh with linear elastic isotropic properties for 1023 carbon steel. Lower-order vibration modes produced global deformations primarily along the valve disk, while higher-order modes showed localized displacement near the shaft–bearing interface, indicating coupled torsional and translational dynamics. The highest EMPF in the X-direction occurred at 1153.1 Hz with 0.2631 kg, while the Y-direction showed moderate contributions peaking at 0.1239 kg at 392.06 Hz. The Z-direction demonstrated lower influence, with a maximum EMPF of 0.1218 kg. Modes 3 and 4 were critical for potential resonance zones due to significant mass contributions and directional sensitivity. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation analyzed flow behavior, pressure drops, and turbulence under varying valve openings. At a lower opening angle, significant flow separation, recirculation zones, and high turbulence were observed. At 90°, the flow became more streamlined, resulting in a reduction in pressure losses and stabilizing velocity profiles. Full article

Offshore wind turbine structures (OWTs) commonly use monopile foundations for support, and long-term exposure to wind–wave cyclic loads may induce changes in foundation stiffness. Variations in foundation stiffness can significantly alter the inherent vibration characteristics of OWTs, potentially leading to amplified vibrations or resonant conditions. In this study, a numerical model considering soil–pile interaction was developed on the FLAC3D platform to analyze the natural frequency of OWTs under long-term cyclic loading. The study first validated the numerical model’s effectiveness through comparison with measured data; a degradation stiffness model (DSM) was then embedded to assess how prolonged cyclic loading affects the degradation of foundation stiffness. A series of parametric studies were conducted in medium-dense and dense sand layers to investigate natural frequency alterations induced by prolonged cyclic loading. Finally, a simplified method for evaluating long-term natural frequency changes was established, and a 3.6 MW offshore wind turbine case was used to reveal the evolution characteristics of its natural frequency under long-term cyclic loads. The data reveal that the natural frequency of the structure undergoes a downward tendency as cyclic loading and frequency increase. To ensure long-term safe operation, the designed natural frequency should preferably shift toward 3P (where P is the blade rotation frequency). Full article

As high-speed electric multiple units (EMUs) advance in speed and complexity, quasi-static design methods may underestimate the fatigue risks associated with high-frequency dynamic excitations. This study quantifies the contribution of gear meshing-induced vibrations (2512 Hz) to fatigue damage in EMU gearbox housings, revealing resonance amplification of local stresses up to 1.8 MPa at 300 km/h operation. Through integrated field monitoring and bench testing, we demonstrated that gear meshing excites structural modes, generating sustained, very high-cycle stresses (>108 cycles). Crucially, fatigue specimens were directly extracted from in-service gearbox housings—overcoming the limitations of standardized coupons—passing the very high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) test to derive S-N characteristics beyond 108 cycles. Results show a continuous decline in fatigue strength (with no traditional fatigue limit) from 108 to 109 cycles. This work bridges the gap between static design standards (e.g., FKM) and actual dynamic environments, proving that accumulated damage from low-amplitude gear-meshing stresses (3.62 × 1011 cycles over a 12 million km lifespan) contributes to a 16% material utilization ratio. The findings emphasize that even low-magnitude gear-meshing stresses can significantly influence gearbox fatigue life due to their ultra-high frequency, warranting design consideration beyond current standards. To address the limitations of conventional single-track rail systems in challenging hilly and mountainous terrains, which are ill-suited for transporting heavy agricultural machinery, there is a critical need to develop a specialized the double-track rail transportation system optimized for orchard equipment. Recognizing this requirement, our research team designed and implemented a double-track rail transportation system. In this innovative system, the rail functions as the pivotal component, with its structural properties significantly impacting the machine’s overall stability and operational performance. In this study, resistance strain gauges were employed to analyze the stress–strain distribution of the track under a full load of 750 kg, a critical factor in the system’s design. To further investigate the structural performance of the double-track rail, the impact hammer method was utilized in conjunction with triaxial acceleration sensors to conduct experimental modal analysis (EMA) under actual support conditions. By integrating the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), the first 20 natural modes and their corresponding parameters were successfully identified with high precision. A comparative analysis between finite element simulation results and experimental measurements was performed, revealing the double-track rail’s inherent vibration characteristics under constrained modal conditions versus actual boundary constraints. These valuable findings serve as a theoretical foundation for the dynamic optimization of rail structures and the mitigation of resonance issues. The advancement of hilly and mountainous rail transportation systems holds significant promise for enhancing productivity and transportation efficiency in agricultural operations. Full article

The urgent demand of wireless sensor nodes for long-life and maintenance-free miniature electrical sources with output power ranging from microwatts to milliwatts has accelerated the development of energy harvesting technologies. For the abundant and renewable nature of wind in environments, flow-induced vibration (FIV)-based wind energy harvesting has emerged as a promising approach. Electromagnetic FIV wind energy harvesters (WEHs) show great potential for realistic applications due to their excellent durability and stability. However, electromagnetic WEHs remain less studied than piezoelectric WEHs, with few dedicated review articles available. This review analyzes the working principle, device structure, and performance characteristics of electromagnetic WEHs based on vortex-induced vibration, galloping, flutter, wake galloping vibration, and Helmholtz resonator. The methods to improve the output power, broaden the operational wind speed range, broaden the operational wind direction range, and enhance the durability are then discussed, providing some suggestions for the development of high-performance electromagnetic FIV WEHs. This study presents an analysis of the electromagnetic noise and vibration in a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM), focusing on their excitation sources. To investigate this, the excitation sources were identified through an analytical approach, and their effects on electromagnetic noise and vibration were evaluated using a finite element method (FEM)-based analysis approach. Additionally, an equivalent curved-beam model based on three-dimensional shell theory was applied to determine the deflection forces on the stator yoke, accounting for the tooth-modulation effect. The stator’s natural frequencies were derived through the characteristic equation in free vibration analysis. Modal analysis was performed to validate the analytically derived natural frequencies and to investigate stator deformation under the tooth-modulation effect across various vibration modes. Furthermore, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) analysis via FEM reveals that major harmonic components align closely with the natural frequencies, identifying them as primary sources of elevated vibrations. A comparative study between 8-pole–9-slot and 8-pole–12-slot SPMSMs highlights the impact of force variations on the stator teeth in relation to vibration and noise characteristics, with FEM verification. The proposed method provides a valuable tool for early-stage motor design, enabling the rapid identification of resonance operating points that may induce severe vibrations. This facilitates proactive mitigation strategies to enhance motor performance and reliability. Full article

In engineering structures, damping materials are an effective way to improve vibration characteristics, but they can significantly increase the weight and cost of the structure. In this study, based on the variable density topology optimization algorithm, combined with finite element simulation and experimental validation, the vibration damping performance of a composite structure with steel plate and damping material is optimized. With the objective of minimizing the resonance response and the constraint of damping material volume, the material distribution of the damping layer is optimized, and the amount of damping material used is successfully reduced by 31.2%. By building a test rig and comparing the vibration responses under the three working conditions of no damping, full damping coverage, and optimized damping, the effectiveness of the optimization strategy is verified, and a significant reduction in vibration response is achieved. This study provides an innovative solution for lightweight design and cost control in engineering. Full article

Driven by the urgent demand for low-frequency vibration and noise control in engineering scenarios such as automobiles, acoustic metamaterials (AMs), as a new class of functional materials, have demonstrated significant application potential. This paper proposes a low-frequency band gap optimization design method for local resonance acoustic metamaterials (LRAMs) based on a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Within a COMSOL Multiphysics 6.2 with MATLAB R2024b co-simulation framework, a parameterized unit cell model of the metamaterial is constructed. The optimization process targets two objectives: minimizing the band gap’s deviation from the target and reducing the structural mass. A multi-objective fitness function is formulated by incorporating the band gap deviation and structural mass constraints, and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is employed to perform a global search over the geometric parameters of the resonant unit. The resulting Pareto-optimal solution set achieves a unit cell mass as low as 26.49 g under the constraint that the band gap deviation does not exceed 2 Hz. The results of experimental validation show that the optimized metamaterial configuration reduces the peak of the low-frequency frequency response function (FRF) at 63 Hz by up to 75% in a car door structure. Furthermore, the simulation predictions exhibit good agreement with the experimental measurements, confirming the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed method in engineering applications. The proposed multi-objective optimization framework is highly general and extensible and capable of effectively balancing between the acoustic performance and structural mass, thus providing an efficient engineering solution for low-frequency noise control problems. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of acoustic emission (AE) characteristics for condition monitoring of rolling bearings in passenger ropeway systems. Through controlled laboratory experiments and field validation across multiple operational ropeways, we establish an optimized AE-based diagnostic framework. Key findings demonstrate that resonant VS150-RIC sensors outperform broadband sensors in defect detection, showing greater energy response at characteristic frequencies for inner race defects. The RMS parameter emerges as a robust diagnostic indicator, with defective bearings exhibiting periodic peaks and higher mean RMS values. Field tests reveal progressive RMS escalation preceding visible damage, enabling predictive maintenance. Furthermore, we develop a novel Paligemma LLM model for automated wear detection using AE time-domain images. The research validates the AE technology’s superiority over conventional vibration methods for low-speed bearing monitoring, providing a scientifically grounded approach for safety-critical ropeway maintenance. An angled single-excitation elliptical vibration system for ultrasonic-assisted machining was developed in this paper, which was composed of a giant magnetostrictive transducer and an angled horn. Based on the continuous boundary conditions between the components, the frequency equation of the angled vibration system was derived, and the resonant frequencies of vibration systems with different angles were theoretically calculated. The finite element method was employed to investigate the impact of varying angles on the resonant frequency, elliptical trajectory, phase difference, and output amplitude of the vibration systems. The electrical impedance of the vibration system and the longitudinal and transverse vibration amplitudes at the end face of the horn were tested experimentally. The results show that the resonant frequency and phase difference in the vibration system decreased, the transverse amplitude of the output elliptical trajectory increased, and the longitudinal amplitude decreased with the increase in the included angle. The elliptical trajectories obtained from the test were generally consistent with the calculated results, and the calculated values of the resonant frequencies of the three angled vibration systems were in good agreement with the experimental test values. Presented in this work is a harmonic balance (HB)-based pseudo-time code-coupling approach applied to a one-degree-of-freedom vortex-induced vibration (VIV) problem of a circular cylinder in a low-Reynolds-number laminar flow regime. Unlike physical time coupling used in traditional time-accurate methods, this novel approach updates both of the fluid and structure fields by integrating respective HB forms of governing equations in pseudo-time, and then couples the two fields in pseudo-time using a partitioned approach. A separate procedure is adopted to determine the VIV frequency at every code-coupling iteration, which enables the simultaneous convergence of variables of both fields in a single run of the solver. For the cases considered here, lock-in vibrations are predicted over a range of Reynolds numbers, inside and outside the resonant range. The results are verified by a time-accurate method and also validated against earlier experimental data, demonstrating the efficiency and robustness of the pseudo-time code-coupling approach. The dynamic control of vibrations in skyscrapers is a critical consideration in sustainable building design, particularly in response to environmental excitations such as wind impact or seismic activity. Effective vibration neutralisation plays a crucial role in providing the safety of high-rise buildings. This research introduces an innovative concept for an active vibration damper that operates based on fluid dynamic transport to adaptively alter a skyscraper’s natural frequency, thereby counteracting resonant vibrations. A distinctive feature of this system is an adjustable-length cable mechanism, allowing for the dynamic modification of the pendulum’s effective length in real time. The structure, based on cable length adjustment, enables the PTMD to precisely tune its natural frequency to variable excitation conditions, thereby improving damping during transient or resonance phenomena of the building’s dynamic behaviour. A comprehensive mathematical model based on Lagrangian mechanics outlines the governing equations for this system, capturing the interactions between pendulum motion, fluid flow, and the damping forces necessary to maintain stability. Simulation analyses examine the role of initial excitation frequency and variable damping coefficients, revealing critical insights into optimal damper performance under varied structural conditions. The findings indicate that the proposed pendulum damper effectively mitigates resonance risks, paving the way for sustainable skyscraper design through enhanced structural adaptability and resilience. This adaptive PTMD, featuring an adjustable-length cable, provides a solution for creating safe and energy-efficient skyscraper designs, aligning with sustainable architectural practices and advancing future trends in vibration management technology. The study presented in this article supports the development of modern skyscraper design, with a focus on dynamic vibration control for sustainability and structural safety. It combines advanced numerical modelling, data-driven control algorithms, and experimental validation. From a sustainability perspective, the proposed PTMD system reduces the need for oversized structural components by providing adaptive, efficient damping, thereby lowering material consumption and embedded carbon. Through dynamically retuning structural stiffness and mass, the proposed PTMD enhances resilience and energy efficiency in skyscrapers, lowers lifetime energy use associated with passive damping devices, and enhances occupant comfort. This aligns with global sustainability objectives and new-generation building standards. Full article
