Research on Startup Characteristics of Parallel Axial-Flow Pump Systems

This study takes four parallel axial-flow pumps (three in operation + one on standby) as the research object. Using a 1D–3D coupling method, it explores the flow characteristics of axial-flow pumps under different startup strategies during multi-pump parallel operation. Through comparative analysis, the following conclusions are drawn: when all three pumps start simultaneously, the internal pressure exceeds the rated head by 23.43%, and the reverse flow reaches 10.57% of the rated flow. When starting the pumps sequentially with 5 s intervals, the pressure can be reduced to 11.41% above the rated head, but the reverse flow increases to 13.87%. Further extending the startup interval to 15 s results in only minimal improvements compared to 5 s intervals: the maximum internal pressure and maximum reverse flow decrease by just 0.97% and 0.05%, respectively. When valve coordination is added to the 5 s sequential startup strategy (pre-opening the valve to 60% before pump startup), the pressure exceeds the rated head by 10.49%, and the reverse flow exceeds the rated flow by 6.04%. In this scenario, the high-pressure areas and high-turbulence zones on the blade back surfaces are significantly reduced, achieving optimal flow stability. Therefore, the parallel system startup should adopt a coordinated strategy combining moderate time intervals with 60% valve pre-opening. This approach can both avoid excessive pressure impact and effectively control reverse flow phenomena, providing an important basis for optimizing the startup of multi-pump parallel systems. Rail transit as a high-energy consumption field urgently requires the adoption of clean energy innovations to reduce energy consumption and accelerate the transition to new energy applications. As an energy-saving fluid machinery, the ejector exhibits significant application potential and academic value within this field. This paper reviewed the recent advances, technical challenges, research hotspots, and future development directions of ejector applications in rail transit, aiming to address gaps in existing reviews. (1) In waste heat recovery, exhaust heat is utilized for propulsion in vehicle ejector refrigeration air conditioning systems, resulting in energy consumption being reduced by 12~17%. (2) In vehicle pneumatic pressure reduction systems, the throttle valve is replaced with an ejector, leading to an output power increase of more than 13% and providing support for zero-emission new energy vehicle applications. (3) In hydrogen supply systems, hydrogen recirculation efficiency exceeding 68.5% is achieved in fuel cells using multi-nozzle ejector technology. (4) Ejector-based active flow control enables precise ± 20 N dynamic pantograph lift adjustment at 300 km/h. However, current research still faces challenges including the tendency toward subcritical mode in fixed geometry ejectors under variable operating conditions, scarcity of application data for global warming potential refrigerants, insufficient stability of hydrogen recycling under wide power output ranges, and thermodynamic irreversibility causing turbulence loss. To address these issues, future efforts should focus on developing dynamic intelligent control technology based on machine learning, designing adjustable nozzles and other structural innovations, optimizing multi-system efficiency through hybrid architectures, and investigating global warming potential refrigerants. These strategies will facilitate the evolution of ejector technology toward greater intelligence and efficiency, thereby supporting the green transformation and energy conservation objectives of rail transit. Internal leakage within the valve body constitutes a severe potential safety hazard in industrial fluid control systems, attributable to its high concealment and the resultant difficulty in detection via conventional methodologies. Acoustic emission (AE) technology, functioning as an efficient non-destructive testing approach, is capable of capturing the transient stress waves induced by leakage, thereby furnishing an effective means for the real-time monitoring and quantitative assessment of internal leakage within the valve body. This paper conducts a systematic review of the theoretical foundations, signal-processing methodologies, and the latest research advancements related to the technology for detecting internal leakage in the valve body based on acoustic emission. Firstly, grounded in Lechlier’s acoustic analogy theory, the generation mechanism of acoustic emission signals arising from valve body leakage is elucidated. Secondly, a detailed analysis is conducted on diverse signal processing techniques and their corresponding optimization strategies, encompassing parameter analysis, time–frequency analysis, nonlinear dynamics methods, and intelligent algorithms. Moreover, this paper recapitulates the current challenges encountered by this technology and delineates future research orientations, such as the fusion of multi-modal sensors, the deployment of lightweight deep learning models, and integration with the Internet of Things. This study provides a systematic reference for the engineering application and theoretical development of the acoustic emission-based technology for detecting internal leakage in valves. Full article

Background: Surgical bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement is a ubiquitous procedure, with several factors identified in affecting outcomes. We hypothesize that smaller valves may be associated with worse outcomes and decreased freedom from clinical events, and a shift in implanting larger valves whenever possible may confer benefit to the patient. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted using a systematic search strategy to evaluate studies examining the relationship between bioprosthetic valve size and outcomes. Inclusion criteria focused on studies reporting paired data on valve size and clinical endpoints in surgical AVR. Results: Among the 15 reviewed studies, smaller valve sizes were consistently associated with higher post-operative transvalvular gradients (6/7 studies) and increased reintervention rates (5/8 studies). Associations with accelerated structural valve degeneration (SVD) (3/5 studies) and reduced survival (8/11 studies) were also observed, although heterogeneity in study design and follow-up durations limited definitive conclusions. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that larger valve sizes may improve freedom from SVD, reduce reintervention rates, and enhanced survival. This may also justify the slight increased risk of enlarging the aortic root to accommodate a larger bioprosthetic valve prosthesis. Further high-quality, controlled studies are needed to clarify the independent impact of valve size on long-term outcomes and guide surgical decision-making. Full article

The natural gas pipeline network transmission system involved in the coordinated operation of pipeline networks and gas-fired power generation facilities is complex. It consists of multiple components, such as gas sources, users, valves, compressor stations, and pipelines. The addition of natural gas-fired power generation facilities overlaps with the high and low peak periods of civil gas, imposing dual peak-shaving pressures on pipeline networks and requiring more stringent operational control strategies for maintaining system stability. To address the aforementioned issues and improve the overall operating revenues of the system, we proposed the coordinated optimization model of gas-fired power generation facilities, pipeline networks, gas storage, and compressor stations. The optimization algorithm is written using the penalty function method of the Interior Point OPTimizer (IPOPT) solver. Meanwhile, the basic parameters of the system’s pipeline networks, users, gas storage, natural gas-fired power generation facilities, compressors, and electricity prices were input into the solver. The research results reveal that the algorithm ensures solution accuracy while accounting for computational efficiency and practical applicability. The algorithm can be used to effectively calculate the ideal coordinated operation solution, significantly improve the operating revenues of the system, and achieve safe, stable, coordinated, and efficient operation of the system. Hydraulic excavators operate in harsh environments where direct measurement of actuator chamber pressures and boom displacement is often unreliable or infeasible. This study presents a novel control strategy that estimates actuator chamber pressures from work port pressures using differential equations, eliminating the need for direct pressure or position sensors. A fuzzy logic-based proportional–derivative (PD) controller is developed to mitigate boom oscillations, particularly under high-inertia load conditions and variable operator inputs. The controller dynamically adjusts gains through fuzzy logic-based gain scheduling, enhancing adaptability across a wide range of operating conditions. The proposed method addresses the limitations of classical PID controllers, which struggle with the nonlinearities, parameter uncertainties, and instability introduced by counterbalance valves and pressure-compensated proportional valves. Experimental data is used to design fuzzy rules and membership functions, ensuring robust performance. Simulation and full-scale experimental validation demonstrate that the fuzzy PD controller significantly reduces pressure overshoot (by 23% during extension and 32% during retraction) and decreases settling time (by 31.23% and 28%, respectively) compared to conventional systems. Frequency-domain stability analysis confirms exponential stability and improved damping characteristics. The proposed control scheme enhances system reliability and safety, making it ideal for excavators operating in remote or rugged terrains where conventional sensor-based systems may fail. This approach is generalizable and does not require modifications to the existing hydraulic circuit, offering a practical and scalable solution for modern hydraulic machinery. Full article

Background and Aims: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most common esophageal disorder worldwide and a progressive condition leading to Barrett’s esophagus and adenocarcinoma. Continuous medical therapy with proton pump inhibitors fails to restore the antireflux barrier and is unable to relieve symptoms in up to 40% of patients. A tailored and standardized antireflux surgical procedure may increase cure rates and meet patient expectations. Methods and Results: Antireflux surgery aims to reestablish the natural antireflux barrier, which includes the diaphragmatic crura, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and the angle of His along with the gastroesophageal flap valve. For decades, the Nissen total fundoplication has been the primary procedure and remains the gold standard for surgical treatment. Alternatives such as Toupet partial fundoplication, Dor partial fundoplication, and the magnetic sphincter augmentation (LINX™) procedure have been developed to mitigate side effects like dysphagia, gas-bloat syndrome, and the inability to belch or vomit. Recent clinical findings regarding a novel procedure, RefluxStop™, indicate that restoring the gastroesophageal flap valve, in conjunction with anterior fundoplication and a silicone device for stabilizing the LES beneath the diaphragm, can achieve lasting reflux control and enhance patient-reported outcomes. Conclusions: The planning of healthcare services and actionable strategies to improve equity and quality of treatment is critical to address the global burden of GERD. Modern laparoscopic surgery for GERD is safe and effective and should be performed in centers offering a complete diagnostic pathway and specific surgical techniques tailored to the individual GERD phenotype. Shared decision-making between the surgeon and the patient is essential for the choice of operation. A personalized approach can offer clinical benefits over total fundoplication and improve patient-reported outcomes. Full article

When lithium-ion batteries experience thermal runaway, a large amount of heat rapidly accumulates inside, causing the internal pressure to rise sharply. Once the pressure exceeds the battery’s safety valve design capacity, the valve activates and releases flammable gas. If ignited in a high-temperature environment, the escaping gas can cause a jet fire containing high-temperature substances. Effectively controlling the internal temperature of the jet fire, especially rapidly cooling the core area of the flame during the jet process, is important to prevent the spread of lithium-ion battery fires. Therefore, this work proposes a strategy of a synergistic effect using microcapsule fire extinguishing agents and fine water mist to achieve an external barrier and an internal attack. The microcapsule fire extinguishing agents are prepared by using melamine–urea–formaldehyde resin as the shell and 1,1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4-nonafluoro-4-methoxybutane (C5H3F9O) and 1,1,2,2,3,3,4-heptafluorocyclopentane (C5H3F7) as the composite core. During the process of lithium-ion battery thermal runaway, the microcapsule fire extinguishing agents can enter the inner area of the jet fire under the protection of the fine water mist. The microcapsule shell ruptures at 100 °C, releasing the highly effective composite fire suppressant core inside the jet fire. The fine water mist significantly blocks the transfer of thermal radiation, inhibiting the spread of the fire. Compared to the suppression with fine water mist only, the time required to reduce the battery temperature from the peak value to a low temperature is reduced by 66 s and the peak temperature of the high-temperature substances above the battery is reduced by 228.2 °C. The propagation of the thermal runaway is suppressed, and no thermal runaway of other batteries around the faulty unit will occur. This synergistic suppression strategy of fine water mist and microcapsule fire extinguishing agent (FWM@M) effectively reduces the adverse effects of jet fires on the propagation of thermal runaway (TR) of lithium-ion batteries, providing a new solution for efficiently extinguishing lithium-ion battery fires. Saturation diving is the only viable method that enables divers to withstand prolonged exposure to high-pressure environments, and it is increasingly used in underwater rescue and marine resource development. This study presents the control system design for a specialized saturation diving decontamination decompression chamber. As a multi-compartment structure, the system requires precise inter-cabin pressure differentials to ensure safe decontamination and ventilation control under dynamic conditions, particularly in the presence of potential faults, such as valve offset, actuator malfunction, and chamber leakage. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel model-based planning and fault-tolerant control framework that enables adaptive responses and maintains resilient system performance. Specifically, we introduce a trajectory-planning algorithm guided by policy networks to improve planning efficiency and robustness under system uncertainty. Additionally, a meta-learning-based fault-tolerant control strategy is proposed to address system disturbances and faults. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves higher cumulative rewards, faster convergence, and improved robustness compared to conventional methods. This work provides an effective and adaptive control solution for human-occupied hyperbaric systems operating in safety-critical environments requiring fail-operational performance. Full article

Natural gas stands out as a promising alternative fuel, and utilizing late intake valve close (LIVC) can further enhance its potential by improving internal combustion engine performance. The present study investigated the effect of LIVC on the performance of a Nissan Qashqai J10 four-cylinder internal combustion ignition engine (ICE) operating on gasoline (G) and natural gas (NG), with a focus on both energy and ecological aspects at stoichiometric points. Experimental tests were performed under the usual engine operating conditions, with engine speeds of 2000 and 3000 rpm and brake mean effective pressures (BMEPs) of 0.31, 0.55, and 0.79 MPa, while the intake valve closing moment was delayed at 24°, 31°, 38°, 45°, 52°, and 59° after bottom dead center (aBDC). The software AVL BOOST™ (version R2021.2) and its utility BURN were used to calculate the rate of heat release (ROHR), mass fraction burned (MFB), in-cylinder temperature, and the rate of temperature rise. The substitution of natural gas for gasoline substantially decreases CO2 and NOx emissions while enhancing the engine’s energy efficiency. Implementing a LIVC strategy can further boost brake thermal efficiency and reduce CO2, though it negatively impacts CO, HC, and NOx emissions. Optimal performance necessitates balancing efficiency improvements and CO2 reduction against the control of other pollutants, potentially through combining LIVC with alternative engine control methodologies. Urban water distribution systems face growing challenges from energy inefficiencies caused by hydraulic anomalies, such as pipe aging, bursts, demand variability, and suboptimal pump and valve operations. This review systematically evaluates current technologies for energy-efficient management of WDNs under such conditions, structured around both basic and applied technologies. Basic technologies include real-time monitoring, data acquisition, and hydraulic modeling with CFD simulation. Applied technologies focus on demand forecasting, pressure management for energy optimization, and leakage anomaly detection. Case studies demonstrate the practical value of these approaches. Despite recent advances, challenges persist in data interoperability, real-time optimization complexity, scalability, and forecasting uncertainty. Future research should emphasize adaptive AI algorithms, integration of digital twin platforms with control systems, hybrid optimization frameworks, and renewable energy recovery technologies. This review provides a comprehensive foundation for the development of intelligent, energy-efficient, and resilient urban water distribution systems through integrated, data-driven management strategies. To improve the dynamic response, linearity, and control accuracy of the YYSCT-250-3 tractor multi-circuit hydraulic output power tester, this study develops a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-tuned fuzzy-proportional–integral–derivative (Fuzzy-PID) control strategy. By modulating the actuator-driven ball valve’s rotation angle (0–90°) in the proportional flow valve, the controller uses both the flow rate error and its rate of change between the setpoint and the flow meter feedback as fuzzy inputs to adjust the PID outputs. A detailed mathematical model of the electro-hydraulic proportional flow system is established, incorporating hydraulic resistance torque on the ball valve spool and friction coefficients to enhance accuracy. Through MATLAB/Simulink (R2022a) simulations, the PSO algorithm optimizes the fuzzy membership functions and PID gains, yielding faster response, reduced overshoot, and minimal steady-state error. The optimized controller achieved relative steady-state flow errors within ±1.0% and absolute flow control errors within ±0.5 L/min, significantly outperforming the traditional PID controller. These results demonstrate that the PSO-optimized Fuzzy-PID approach effectively addresses the flow control challenges of the YYSCT-250-3, enhancing both testing efficiency and precision. This work provides a robust theoretical framework and practical reference for rapid, high-precision flow control in multi-channel hydraulic power testing. Full article

In this study, in order to overcome the limitations of existing electric vehicle (EV) thermal management systems (TMS), a highly integrated and coordinated operation strategy for EV thermal management was proposed. Specifically, an integrated architecture with a 10-way valve was established to replace traditional 3-way and 4-way valves to enhance the coupling between coolant circuits. Six operating modes were realized via the switching function of the 10-way valve, including the mode of waste heat recovery. A highly integrated TMS model was developed on the AMEsim2304 platform, followed by parameter matching. The accuracy of the model was validated through comparative analysis with laboratory and environmental chamber test results. Based on the designed highly integrated TMS, a classical fuzzy Proportional-Integral-Derivative Control (PID) control strategy was introduced to regulate the coolant circulation pump. Simulation analyses and experimental results demonstrated that the optimized system could reduce the battery pack heating time by approximately 300 s compared to the pre-optimized configuration. Moreover, the waste heat recovery could improve the cabin heating rate from 1.9 °C/min to 3.4 °C/min, representing a 43.7% enhancement. Furthermore, the output power of the high-pressure liquid heater remained low, resulting in a 10% reduction in overall heating energy consumption. Based on simulation and experimental analyses, this research can promote the progress of thermal management system technology for electric vehicles to a certain extent. Full article

Under the dual imperatives of air pollution control and energy conservation, this study proposes an enhanced optimization framework for combined heat and power (CHP) district heating systems based on bypass thermal storage (BTS). In contrast to conventional centralized tank-based approaches, this method leverages the dynamic hydraulic characteristics of secondary network bypass pipelines to achieve direct sensible heat storage in circulating water, significantly improving system flexibility and energy efficiency. The core innovation lies in addressing the critical yet under-explored issue of control valve dynamic response, which profoundly impacts system operational stability and economic performance. A quality regulation strategy is systematically implemented to stabilize circulation flow rates through temperature modulation by establishing a supply–demand equilibrium model under bypass conditions. To overcome the limitations of traditional feedback control in handling hydraulic transients and heat transfer dynamics in the plate heat exchanger, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework is developed, integrating a data-driven valve impedance-opening degree correlation model. This model is rigorously validated against four flow characteristics (linear, equal percentage, quick-opening, and parabolic) and critical impedance parameters (maximum/minimum controllable impedance). This study provides theoretical foundations and technical guidance for optimizing secondary network heating systems, enhancing overall system performance and stability, and promoting energy-efficient development in the heating sector. This study introduces a novel magnetorheological (MR) damper for semi-active vehicle suspension systems that enhance ride comfort and handling stability. The proposed damper integrates reverse and normal damping modes, enabling independent control of rebound and compression strokes through an external MR valve. This configuration supports four damping modes—Soft/Soft, Hard/Soft, Soft/Hard, and Hard/Hard—allowing adaptability to varying driving conditions. Magnetic circuit optimization ensures rapid damping force adjustments (≈10 ms), while a semi-active control algorithm incorporating skyhook logic, roll, dive, and squat control strategies was implemented. Experimental validation on a mid-sized sedan demonstrated significant improvements, including a 30–40% reduction in vertical acceleration and pitch/roll rates. These enhancements improve vehicle safety by reducing body motion during critical maneuvers, potentially lowering accident risk and driver fatigue. In addition to performance gains, the simplified MR damper architecture and modular control facilitate easier integration into diverse vehicle platforms, potentially streamlining vehicle design and manufacturing processes and enabling cost-effective adoption in mass-market applications. These findings highlight the potential of MR dampers to support next-generation vehicle architectures with enhanced adaptability and manufacturability. Full article
