In this study, we investigated the effects of air packaging, vacuum packaging and modified atmosphere packaging (CO2/N2: 80/20) on the purine metabolism and enzyme activities of refrigerated large yellow croakers. The results showed that modified atmosphere packaging significantly inhibited microbial growth, delayed adenosine triphosphate degradation and maintained higher IMP content (1.93 μmol/g on day 21) compared to the air packaging group (2.82 μmol/g on day 12). The total purine content increased with storage time, with hypoxanthine content increasing significantly and occupying most of the total content, which was the key factor for the elevation of purine, followed by adenine content showing a significant decreasing trend. Hypoxanthine accumulation was significantly suppressed in the modified atmosphere packaging group (2.31 μmol/g on day 18), which was much lower than that in the air packaging group (5.64 μmol/g), whereas xanthine and guanine did not show significant differences among the groups. The key enzymes xanthine oxidase and purine nucleoside phosphorylase were much less active in modified atmosphere packaging, effectively delaying the cascade reaction of inosine monophosphate → hypoxanthine → xanthine. The study confirmed that modified atmosphere packaging intervenes in purine metabolism through enzyme activity regulation, providing a theoretical basis for the preservation of low purine aquatic products. The incorporation of phase change material (PCM) can enhance wall thermal performance and indoor thermal comfort, but practical applications still face challenges related to high costs and potential leakage issues. In this study, a novel dual-biomass-based shape-stabilized PCM (Bio-SSPCM) was proposed, wherein waste cooking fat and waste reed straw were, respectively, incorporated as the PCM substance and supporting material. The waste fat (lard) consisted of both saturated and unsaturated fatty acid glycerides, exhibiting a melting point about 21.2–41.1 °C and a melting enthalpy value of 40 J/g. Reed straw was carbonized to form a sustainable porous biochar supporting matrix, which was used for the vacuum adsorption of waste fat. The results demonstrate that the as-prepared dual-Bio-SSPCM exhibited excellent thermal performance, characterized by a latent heat capacity of 25.4 J/g. With the addition of 4 wt% of expanded graphite (EG), the thermal conductivity of the composite PCM reached 1.132 W/(m·K), which was 5.4 times higher than that of the primary lard. The thermal properties of the Bio-SSPCM were characterized using an analog T-history method. The results demonstrated that the dual-Bio-SSPCM exhibited exceptional and rapid heat storage and exothermic capabilities. The dual-Bio-SSPCM, prepared from waste cooking fat and reed straw, can be considered as environmentally friendly construction material for energy storage in line with the principles of the circular economy. Boehmite has been widely used in theoretical research and industry, especially for hazardous material processing. For the liquid-phase treating process, the interfacial properties of boehmite are believed to be affected by pH conditions, which change its physicochemical behavior. However, molecular-level detection on cluster ions is challenging when using bulk approaches. Herein we employ in situ vacuum ultraviolet single-photon ionization mass spectrometry (VUV SPI-MS) coupled with a vacuum-compatible microreactor system for analysis at the liquid–vacuum interface (SALVI) to investigate the solute molecular composition of boehmite under different pH conditions for the first time. The mass spectral results show that more complex clustering of solute molecules exists at the solid–liquid (s–l) interface than conventionally perceived in a “simple” aqueous solution. Besides solute ions, such as boehmite molecules and fragments, the composition and appearance energies of these newly discovered solvated cluster ions are determined by VUV SPI-MS in different pH solutions. We offer new results for the pH-dependent effect of boehmite and provide insights into a more detailed solvation mechanism at the s–l interface. By comparing the key products under different pH conditions, fundamental understanding of boehmite dissolution is revealed to assist the engineering design of waste processing and storage solutions. Direct air capture (DAC), as a complementary strategy to carbon capture and storage (CCS), offers a scalable and sustainable pathway to remove CO2 directly from the ambient air. This study presents a detailed evaluation of the amine-functionalised metal-organic framework (MOF) sorbent, mmen-Mg2(dobpdc), for DAC using a temperature–vacuum swing adsorption (TVSA) process. While this sorbent has demonstrated promising performance in point-source CO2 capture, this is the first dynamic simulation-based study to rigorously assess its effectiveness for low-concentration atmospheric CO2 removal. A transient one-dimensional TVSA model was developed in Aspen Adsorption and validated against experimental breakthrough data to ensure accuracy in capturing both the sharp and gradual adsorption kinetics. To enhance process efficiency and sustainability, this work provides a comprehensive parametric analysis of key operational factors, including air flow rate, temperature, adsorption/desorption durations, vacuum pressure, and heat exchanger temperature, on process performance, including CO2 purity, recovery, productivity, and specific energy consumption. Under optimal conditions for this sorbent (vacuum pressure lower than 0.15 bar and feed temperature below 15 °C), the TVSA process achieved ~98% CO2 purity, recovery over 70%, and specific energy consumption of about 3.5 MJ/KgCO2. These findings demonstrate that mmen-Mg2(dobpdc) can achieve performance comparable to benchmark DAC sorbents in terms of CO2 purity and recovery, underscoring its potential for scalable DAC applications. This work advances the development of energy-efficient carbon removal technologies and highlights the value of step-shape isotherm adsorbents in supporting global carbon-neutrality goals. Cordyceps sinensis (C. sinensis) is widely recognized for its bioactive compounds and associated health benefits. However, due to its delicate nature, conventional chilled storage often results in the rapid degradation of valuable compounds, leading to loss of nutritional value and overall quality. This study integrated and evaluated comprehensive strategies: three gas-conditioning and two light-based preservation methods for maintaining both quality and nutritional integrity during 12-day chilled storage at 4 °C. The results revealed that vacuum packaging significantly inhibited weight loss (3.49%) compared to in the control group (10.77%) and preserved sensory quality (p < 0.05). UV-based interventions notably suppressed polyphenol oxidase and tyrosinase activities by 36.4% and 29.7%, respectively (p < 0.05). Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) with 80% N2 and 20% CO2 (MAP-N2CO2) maintained higher levels of cordycepin (1.77 µg/g) and preserved energy charge above 0.7 throughout storage. The results suggest that MAP-based treatments are superior methods for the chilled storage of C. sinensis, with diverse advantages and their corresponding shelf lives associated with different gas compositions. There is a lack of an effective approach to measure vacuum conditions inside sealed vacuum electronic devices (VEDs) and other small-space vacuum instruments. In this study, the application performance of an innovative low-pressure gas sensor based on the emission enhancements of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) field emitters was investigated, and the in situ vacuum performance of X-ray tubes was studied for the advantages of miniature dimension and having low power consumption, extremely low outgassing, and low thermal disturbance compared to conventional ionization gauges. The MWCNT emitters with high crystallinity presented good pressure sensing performance for nitrogen, hydrogen, and an air mixture in the range of 10−7 to 10−3 Pa. The miniature MWCNT sensor is able to work and remain stable with high-temperature baking, important for VED applications. The sensor monitored the in situ pressures of the sealed X-ray tubes successfully with high-power operations and a long-term storage of over two years. The investigation showed that the vacuum of the sealed X-ray tube is typical at a low 10−4 Pa level, and pre-sealing degassing treatments are able to make the X-ray tube work under high vacuum levels with less outgassing and keep a stable high vacuum for a long period of time. In food processing, non-destructive and non-invasive characterization is a powerful tool for monitoring processes and controlling quality. Cheeses consist of a large variety of products whose nutritional and sensory properties depend on the source materials, cheesemaking procedures, and biochemical transformations occurring during maturation and storage. In this study, proton magnetic resonance relaxation time correlation maps (2D 1H-NMR T1–T2) are used to investigate the effect of the ripening degree on Pecorino cheese and evaluate its evolution during storage in a refrigerator under vacuum-packaging conditions. NMR relaxometry has allowed for non-invasive monitoring of packaged Pecorino cheese slices, and the results were compared with those obtained with the two widely used techniques, i.e., Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The analysis of variance and simultaneous component analysis (ASCA), separately applied to 2D 1H-NMR T1–T2 correlation maps, DSC, and ATR-FTIR data, suggests that the results obtained with the NMR approach are consistent with those obtained using the two benchmark techniques. In addition, it can distinguish cheeses stored for different durations (storage time) irrespective of their original moisture content (ripening degree), and vice versa, without opening the vacuum-package, which could compromise the integrity of the samples. Grain drying technology is a core process for ensuring food quality, extending storage life, and improving processing adaptability. With the continuous growth of global food demand and the increasing requirements for food quality and energy efficiency, traditional drying technologies face multiple challenges. This paper reviews six major grain drying technologies, comprising hot air drying, microwave drying, infrared drying, freeze drying, vacuum drying, and solar drying. It provides an in-depth discussion of the working principles, advantages, and limitations of each technology, and analyzes their performance in practical applications. In response to challenges such as high energy consumption, uneven drying, and quality loss during the drying process, the paper also explores the research progress of several hybrid drying systems, such as microwave–hot air drying combined systems and solar–infrared drying systems. Although these emerging technologies show significant potential in improving drying efficiency, energy saving, and maintaining food quality, their high costs, scalability, and process stability still limit large-scale applications. Therefore, future research should focus on reducing energy consumption, improving drying precision, and optimizing drying system integration, particularly by introducing intelligent control systems. This would maximize the preservation of food quality while improving the system’s economic efficiency and sustainability, promoting innovation in food production and processing technologies, and further advancing global food security and sustainable agricultural development. The objective of this work was to produce and characterize active gelatin–acerola packaging films based on gelatin incorporated with different concentrations of acerola pulp and applied to evaluate the stability of meat products in packaging. The active films were produced by casting using gelatin (5%), sorbitol (0,1%), and acerola pulp (60, 70, 80, and 90%). The characterization of the acerola pulp was carried out. Visual aspects, thickness, pH, water vapor permeability, and total phenolic compounds were characterized in the films. The commercial acerola pulp presented the characteristics within the identity and quality standards. A good film formation capacity was obtained in all formulations, presenting the color parameters tending to red coloration, characteristic of the acerola pulp. The total phenolic compounds content ranged from 2.88 ± 70.24 to 3.94 ± 96.05 mg GAE/100 g, with 90 g of acerola pulp per 100 g of filmogenic solution. This film formulation was selected to apply in a vacuum pack of beef and chicken samples, analyzing the weight loss, color parameters, pH, water holding capacity, shear strength after 9 days of refrigeration storage, and soil biodegradability. Additionally, beef and chicken (in nature) were stored under the same conditions without using the wrapping film. The beef and chicken samples showed greater water retention capacity and color maintenance over the storage period compared to the control (without film addition). This way, active gelatin–acerola films can be considered a sustainable packaging alternative to preserve meat products. Full article

Garbage sweepers are crucial to municipal cleaning; however, they frequently encounter two significant challenges during their operations: overflowing rubbish storage compartments and vacuum duct clogging. The conventional method of monitoring overflowing refuse and clogging vacuum ducts is based on manual labour, which is inefficient and susceptible to error. Consequently, this investigation suggests an automated monitoring approach that is predicated on the integration of wind speed sensors and ultrasonic sensors. The ultrasonic sensors assess the blockage status by monitoring the height of the accumulation of rubbish in real time, while the wind speed sensors monitor the change in wind speed. The experimental results indicate that the system is an effective solution for monitoring the refuse intake status of intelligent sweepers, significantly reducing manual intervention and improving the operational efficiency of the equipment. Additionally, the system is accurate and reliable. Full article

Thermal Interaction Mechanisms of Ammonium Perchlorate and Ammonia Borane

Ammonia borane (AB), with a theoretical hydrogen content of 19.6 wt%, is constrained by its low crystalline density (0.758 g/cm3) and poor thermal stability (decomposing at 100 °C). In this study, AB/ammonium perchlorate (AP) composites were synthesized via freeze-drying at a 1:1 molar ratio. The integration of AP introduced intermolecular interactions that suppressed AB decomposition, increasing the onset temperature by 80 °C. Subsequent vacuum calcination at 100 °C for 2 h formed oxygen/fuel-integrated ammonium perchlorate borane (APB), which achieved decomposition temperatures exceeding 350 °C. The proposed mechanism involved AB decomposing into borazine and BN polymers at 100 °C, which then NH3BH2+/ClO4 combined to form APB. At 350 °C, APB underwent the following redox reactions: 4NH3BH2ClO4 → N2↑ + 4HCl↑ + 2B2O3 + N2O↑ + O2↑ + 7H2O↑ + H2↑, while residual AP decomposed. The composite exhibited improved density (1.66 g/cm3) and generated H2, N2, O2, and HCl, demonstrating potential for hydrogen storage. Additionally, safety was enhanced by the suppression of AB’s exothermic decomposition (100–200 °C). APB, with its high energy density and thermal stability, was identified as a promising high-energy additive for high-burning-rate propellants. Full article

Biosecurity is vital to Australia’s efforts to prevent and respond to pests and diseases. Here, we report on testing suspected illegal goods (SIGs) as part of an active Australian biosecurity response in Sydney. The Australian Government, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry detected and secured consignments containing tuber products of unknown biosecurity risk and origin. Swab samples were collected from vacuum-sealed yam products, organic packing material (background negative controls), and field negative controls to assess possible cross-contamination from the storage facility. DNA from all samples was analysed using high-throughput metabarcoding targeting the Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 (ITS2) and the chloroplast trnL (UAA) P6 Loop gene regions by two independent teams in Australia. A plant community profile comprising Australian native species and other non-native established species would support the notion of produce being harvested and/or packaged domestically, while their absence would suggest foreign production. Of the 5,764,942 total reads produced, the bioinformatic analysis generated 5,181,530 amplicon sequencing variants employed for species identification. Twenty plant taxa were identified via ITS2 and 15 via trnL, corresponding to worldwide distributed plants, non-native species established in Australia, or species not recorded in Australia. No Australian endemic species were detected. The absence of common Australian native plants, combined with the presence of species not known to occur in Australia, provided strong evidence that the suspect tuber products were illegally imported. The Effect of Combined Extracts from By-Products, Seaweed, and Pure Phenolics on the Quality of Vacuum-Packed Fish Burgers

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of mixed plant extracts on chemical (pH, total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), biogenic amines, relative fatty acid composition) and microbiological quality indicators of vacuum-packed fish burgers stored at 0 ± 2 °C over 13 days. Three mixtures of common juniper by-product and blackberry leaves extracts (JB), Padina pavonica and prickly juniper needles extracts (PCJ), and blackberry leaves extract with catechin and vanillic (BCV) were tested. At the end of storage, TVB-N (15.38–20.03 mg/100 g) and TMA (10.64–15.63 mg/100 g) of burgers with extracts were significantly lower than those of the control group (22.77 mg TVB-N/100 g, 18.37 mg TMA/100 g). The TBARS values in the control burger reached 2.62 ± 0.02 µmol malondialdehyde (MDA)/100 g, while in burgers with extracts, final values were in the range of 0.62 ± 0.01 to 0.80 ± 0.02 µmol MDA/100 g. The extracts showed no effect on biogenic amine formation (tryptamine, putrescine, and cadaverine levels increased during the storage, being the lowest in BCV) or microbial counts, with the exception of the Pseudomonas sp. counts that were significantly lower in JB and PCJ in comparison to the control, reaching 4.1, 4.1, and 5.0 log CFU/g in JB, PCJ, and control, respectively. The Shelf Life of Ready-to-Cook Sweet Potato Varieties Using the Combined Effect of Vacuum-Packaging, Refrigeration, Fruit Pomace Extracts, and Organic Acids

Sweet potatoes play an important role in the global food supply, as they are rich in bioactive components and have numerous health benefits. Their minimally processed, ready-to-eat form is increasingly popular among consumers; however, discoloration and microbiological problems threaten the safety of these products. The aim of this study is to investigate the shelf life of cleaned, cut, ready-to-eat, vacuum-packed, and refrigerated Bonita (white) and Covington (orange) varieties of sweet potatoes after soaking in apple and chokeberry pomace extracts and treatment with citric and ascorbic acids. A series of microbiological and analytical tests was conducted during the storage period. The microbiological tests included the enumeration of cells of mesophilic aerobic and facultative anaerobic microbes, as well as lactobacilli, lactococci, Enterobacteriaceae, yeasts, and moulds. The analytical tests encompassed the determination of the total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, water-soluble solid content, and pH value. The prevalent microbial groups detected in the examined sweet potato varieties were lactic acid bacteria, which were present in both fresh samples and following storage. This study established that low-temperature refrigeration (5 °C), vacuum packaging, and organic acid treatment can effectively control lactic acid bacteria, which are pivotal to spoilage. The combination of preservation steps is of particular significance for ready-to-cook sweet potatoes, as this approach effectively extends the shelf life of these products. Full article

Finite Element Modeling of Different Types of Hydrogen Pressure Vessels Under Extreme Conditions for Space Applications

Fuel cells, propulsion systems, and reaction control systems (RCSs) are just a few of the space applications that depend on pressure vessels (PVs) to safely hold high-pressure fluids while enduring extreme environmental conditions both during launch and in orbit. Under these challenging circumstances, PVs must be lightweight while retaining structural integrity in order to increase the efficiency and lower the launch costs. PVs have significant challenges in space conditions, such as extreme vibrations during launch, the complete vacuum of space, and sudden temperature changes based on their location within the satellite and orbit types. Determining the operational temperature limits and endurance of PVs in space applications requires assessing the combined effects of these factors. As the main propellant for satellites and rockets, hydrogen has great promise for use in future space missions. This study aimed to assess the structural integrity and determine the thermal operating limits of different types of hydrogen pressure vessels using finite element analysis (FEA) with Ansys 2019 R3 Workbench. The impact of extreme space conditions on the performances of various kinds of hydrogen pressure vessels was analyzed numerically in this work. This study determined the safe operating temperature ranges for Type 4, Type 3, and Type 1 PVs at an operating hydrogen storage pressure of 35 MPa in an absolute vacuum. Additionally, the dynamic performance was assessed through modal and random vibration analyses. Various aspects of Ansys Workbench were explored, including the influence of the mesh element size, composite modeling methods, and their combined impact on the result accuracy. In terms of the survival temperature limits, the Type 4 PVs, which consisted of a Nylon 6 liner and a carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy (CFRE) prepreg composite shell, offered the optimal balance between the weight (56.2 kg) and a relatively narrow operating temperature range of 10–100 °C. The Type 3 PVs, which featured an Aluminum 6061-T6 liner, provided a broader operational temperature range of 0–145 °C but at a higher weight of 63.7 kg. Meanwhile, the Type 1 PVs demonstrated a superior cryogenic performance, with an operating range of −55–54 °C, though they were nearly twice as heavy as the Type 4 PVs, with a weight of 106 kg. The absolute vacuum environment had a negligible effect on the mechanical performance of all the PVs. Additionally, all the analyzed PV types maintained structural integrity and safety under launch-induced vibration loads. This study provided critical insights for selecting the most suitable pressure vessel type for space applications by considering operational temperature constraints and weight limitations, thereby ensuring an optimal mechanical–thermal performance and structural efficiency.
