Digital transformation (DT) has emerged as a key strategic lever for enhancing firm resilience and competitiveness, yet its influence on non-productive investment behaviors, such as corporate financial investment, remains underexplored. Existing studies have largely focused on DT’s role in innovation and operational efficiency, leaving a significant gap in understanding how DT reshapes firms’ financial asset allocation. Drawing on a unique panel dataset of A-share main board-listed firms in China from 2011 to 2023, this study provides novel empirical evidence that DT significantly restrains financial investment, with pronounced heterogeneity across ownership types. More importantly, this paper uncovers a multi-layered mechanism: DT enhances the corporate information environment, which subsequently reduces financial investment. In addition, the analysis reveals a moderated mediation mechanism wherein economic uncertainty dampens the information-enhancing effect of DT. Unlike previous research that treats corporate risk-taking as a parallel mediator, this study identifies a sequential mediation pathway, where improved information environments suppress financial investment indirectly by influencing firms’ risk-taking behavior. These findings offer new theoretical insights into the financial implications of DT and contribute to the broader understanding of enterprise behavior in the context of digitalization and economic volatility. This study pioneers the integration of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery with Kolmogorov–Arnold networks (KAN) for the evaluation of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations in inland lakes. Using Baiyangdian Lake in Hebei Province, China, as a case study, a specialized KAN architecture was designed to extract spectral features from Sentinel-2 data, and a robust algorithm was developed for Chl-a estimation. The results demonstrate that the KAN model outperformed traditional feature-engineering-based machine learning (ML) methods and standard multilayer perceptron (MLP) deep learning approaches, achieving an R2 of 0.8451, with MAE and RMSE as low as 1.1920 μg/L and 1.6705 μg/L, respectively. Furthermore, attribution analysis was conducted to quantify the importance of individual features, highlighting the pivotal role of bands B3 and B5 in Chl-a retrieval. Furthermore, spatio-temporal distributions of Chl-a concentrations in Baiyangdian Lake from 2020 to 2024 were generated leveraging the KAN model, further elucidating the underlying causes of water quality changes and examining the driving factors. Compared to previous studies, the proposed approach leverages the high spatial resolution of Sentinel-2 imagery and the accuracy and interpretability of the KAN model, offering a novel framework for monitoring water quality parameters in inland lakes. These findings may guide similar research endeavors and provide valuable decision-making support for environmental agencies. Full article

In this study, a series of novel alkoxylated resorcinarenes were synthesized using secondary and tertiary alcohols under mild catalytic conditions involving iminodiacetic acid. Structural characterization, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirmed the successful incorporation of branched alkyl chains and highlighted the influence of substitution patterns on molecular packing. Notably, detailed mass spectrometric analysis revealed that, under specific conditions, the reaction pathway may shift toward the formation of defined oligomeric species with supramolecular characteristics—an observation that adds a new dimension to the synthetic potential of this system. To complement the chemical analysis, selected derivatives were evaluated for biological activity, focusing on bacterial growth and biofilm formation. Using four clinically relevant strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis), we assessed both planktonic proliferation (OD600) and biofilm biomass (crystal violet assay). Compound 2c (2-pentanol derivative) consistently promoted biofilm formation, particularly in S. aureus and B. subtilis, while having limited cytotoxic effects. In contrast, compound 2e and the DMSO control exhibited minimal impact on biofilm development. The results suggest that specific structural features of the alkoxy chains may modulate microbial responses, potentially via membrane stress or quorum sensing interference. This work highlights the dual relevance of alkoxylated resorcinarenes as both supramolecular building blocks and modulators of microbial behavior. Full article

Developing a rapidly gel-forming, in situ sprayable hydrogel with wound dressing functionality is essential for enhancing the wound healing process. In this study, a novel sprayable hydrogel-based wound dressing was developed by combining thermo- and pH- responsive polymers including Pluronic F127 (PF127) and N-succinyl chitosan (NSC). NSC was prepared by modifying chitosan with succinic anhydride, as confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The NSC synthesized using a succinic anhydride-to-chitosan molar ratio of 5:1 exhibited the highest degree of substitution, resulting in a water-soluble polymer effective over a broad pH range. The formulation process of the PF127:NSC sprayable hydrogel was optimized and evaluated based on its sol–gel phase transition behavior, clarity, gelation time, liquid and moisture management, stability, and cytotoxicity. These properties can be suitably tailored by adjusting the concentrations of PF127 and NSC. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of the hydrogels was enhanced by incorporating Azadirachta indica (neem) extract, a bioactive compound, into the optimized sprayable hydrogel. Both neem release and antioxidant activity increased in a dose-dependent manner. Overall, the developed sprayable hydrogel exhibited favorable sprayability, appropriate gelation properties, controlled drug release, and antioxidant activity, underscoring its promising translational potential as a wound dressing. Water is essential to human civilization and development, yet its quality is increasingly threatened by climate change, pollution, and resource mismanagement. This work introduces an empirical, non-invasive framework for assessing water potability using electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) combined with a novel equivalent circuit model. A customized sensor holder was designed to reduce impedance magnitude and enhance phase sensitivity, improving detection accuracy. Various water samples, including seawater, groundwater, and commercially bottled water, were analyzed. The proposed method achieved a 100% classification accuracy in distinguishing among water types, as validated by extracted circuit parameters and verified by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) measurements. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated the ability to detect compositional changes as small as 10%, highlighting a strong potential for fine discrimination of ionic contents. The extracted parameters, such as resistance, capacitance, and inductance, showed clear correlations with ionic composition, enabling reliable potability classification in accordance with WHO guidelines. The approach is rapid, label-free, and suitable for field applications, offering a promising tool for real-time water quality monitoring and supporting sustainable water resource management. This paper presents WaveCORAL-DCCA, an unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) framework specifically developed to address data distribution shifts and operational variabilities (OVs) in rotor fault diagnosis. The framework introduces the novel integration of discrete wavelet transformation for robust time–frequency feature extraction and an enhanced deep canonical correlation analysis (DCCA) network with correlation alignment (CORAL) loss for superior domain-invariant representation learning. This combination enables more effective alignment of source and target feature distributions without requiring any labelled data from the target domain. Comprehensive validation on both experimental and numerically simulated rotor datasets across three health conditions—i.e., normal, unbalanced, and misaligned—demonstrates that WaveCORAL-DCCA achieves an average diagnostic accuracy of 95%. Notably, it outperforms established UDA benchmarks by at least 5–17% in cross-domain scenarios. These results confirm that WaveCORAL-DCCA provides robust generalisation across machines, fault severities, and operational conditions, even with scarce target domain samples, offering a scalable and practical solution for industrial rotor fault diagnosis. In this study, a series of novel β-phenylalanine derivatives were synthesised and evaluated for their anticancer activity. The 3-(4-methylbenzene-1-sulfonamido)-3-phenylpropanoic acid (2) was prepared using β-phenylalanine as a core scaffold. The β-amino acid derivative 2 was converted to the corresponding hydrazide 4, which enabled the development of structurally diverse heterocyclic derivatives including pyrrole 5, pyrazole 6, thiadiazole 8, oxadiazole 11, triazoles 9 and 12 with Schiff base analogues 13 and series1,2,4-triazolo [3,4-b][1,3,4]thiadiazines 14. These modifications were designed to enhance chemical stability, solubility, and biological activity. All compounds were initially screened for cytotoxicity against the A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cell line, identifying N-[3-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-3-oxo-1-phenylpropyl]-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide (5) and (E)-N-{2-[4-[(4-chlorobenzylidene)amino]-5-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]-1-phenylethyl}-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide (13b) as the most active. The two lead candidates were further evaluated in H69 and H69AR small cell lung cancer lines to assess activity in drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant models. Schiff base 13b containing a 4-chlorophenyl moiety, retained potent antiproliferative activity in both H69 and H69AR cells, comparable to cisplatin, while compound 5 lost efficacy in the resistant phenotype. These findings suggest Schiff base derivative 13b may overcome drug resistance mechanisms, a limitation commonly encountered with standard chemotherapeutics such as doxorubicin. These results demonstrate the potential role of β-phenylalanine derivatives, azole-containing sulphonamides, as promising scaffolds for the development of novel anticancer agents, particularly in the context of lung cancer and drug-resistant tumours. In recent years, researchers have become increasingly interested in identifying traits of cognitive impairment using audio from neuropsychological tests. Unfortunately, there is no universally accepted terminology system that can be used to describe language impairment, and considerable variability exists between clinicians, making detection particularly challenging. Furthermore, databases commonly used by the scientific community present sparse or unbalanced data, which hinders the optimal performance of machine learning models. Therefore, this study aims to test a new methodology for augmenting text data from neuropsychological tests in the Pitt Corpus database to increase classification and interpretability results. The proposed method involves augmenting text data with symptoms commonly present in subjects with cognitive impairment. This innovative approach has enabled us to differentiate between two groups in the database better than widely used text augmentation techniques. The proposed method yielded an increase in the metrics, achieving 0.8742 accuracy, 0.8744 F1-score, 0.8736 precision, and 0.8781 recall. It is shown that implementing large language models with commonly observed symptoms in the language of patients with cognitive impairment in text augmentation can improve the results in low-resource scenarios. Salient object detection is a challenging task in the field of computer vision. The graph-based model has attracted lots of research attention and achieved remarkable progress in this task, which constructs graphs to formulate the intrinsic structure of any image. Nevertheless, the existing graph-based salient object detection methods still have certain limitations and face two major challenges: (1) Previous graphs are constructed by the Gaussian kernel, but they are often corrupted by original noise. (2) They fail to capture common representations and complementary diversity of multi-view features. Both of these degrade saliency performance. In this paper, we propose a novel method, called multi-scale pure graphs with multi-view subspace clustering for salient object detection. Its main contribution is a new, two-stage graph, constructed and constrained by multi-view subspace clustering with sparsity and low rank. One of the advantages is that the multi-scale pure graphs upgrade the saliency performance from the propagation of noise in the graph matrix. Another advantage is that the multi-scale pure graphs exploit consistency and complementary information among multi-view features, which can effectively boost the capability of the graphs. In addition, to verify the impact of the symmetry of the multi-scale pure graphs on the salient object detection performance, we compared the proposed two-stage graphs, which included cases considering the multi-scale pure graphs and those not considering the multi-scale pure graphs. The experimental results were derived using several RGB benchmark datasets and several state-of-the-art algorithms for comparison. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches in terms of multiple standard evaluation metrics. This paper reveals that multi-view subspace clustering is beneficial in promoting graph-based saliency detection tasks. Full article

Background and Objectives: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to progressive destruction of periodontal tissues and remains a significant global health burden. While conventional therapies such as scaling and root planning offer short-term improvements, they often fall short in maintaining long-term microbial control, underscoring the need for adjunctive strategies. This study evaluated the clinical and microbiological effects of a novel essential oil (EO)-based gel—SmartGel OV—formulated with Origanum vulgare. Materials and Methods: Thirty adults with periodontitis were enrolled in a 4-month observational study, during which SmartGel OV was applied daily via gingival massage. Clinical outcomes and bacterial profiles were assessed through probing measurements and real-time PCR analysis. Additionally, a pilot AI-based tool was explored as a supplemental method to monitor inflammation progression through intraoral images. Results: Significant reductions were observed in Fusobacterium nucleatum and Capnocytophaga spp., accompanied by improvements in clinical markers, including probing depth, bleeding on probing, and plaque index. The AI framework successfully identified visual inflammation changes and supported early detection of non-responsiveness. Conclusions: SmartGel OV demonstrates promise as a natural adjunctive treatment for periodontitis and AI monitoring was included as an exploratory secondary tool to assess feasibility for future remote tracking. In this study, a series of copolymers was synthesized using the promising biodegradable polymers Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), and Poly(ethylene adipate) (PEAd), known for their high potential. PEAd was synthesized through a two-step melt polycondensation process and then used to prepare copolymers with PLLA (PLLA-co-PEAd) and PLGA (PLGA-co-PEAd) at weight ratios of 90/10 and 75/25, respectively. The synthesized materials, along with the starting polymers, were extensively characterized for their structure, molecular weight, crystallinity, and thermal behavior. These novel systems exhibit single thermal transitions, e.g., glass transition. The incorporation of PEAd into the copolymers induced a plasticizing effect, evidenced by a consistent decrease in the glass transition temperature. Due to the latter effect in combination with the Mw drop, the facilitation of crystal nucleation was observed. Finally, the results by dielectric spectroscopy on the local and segmental molecular mobility provided additional proof for the homogeneity of the systems, as manifested, e.g., by the recording of single segmental relaxation processes. Overall, the findings indicate that the PLLA-co-PEAd and PLGA-co-PEAd copolymers hold significant potential, and the use of complementary experimental techniques offers valuable insights and indirect indications of their properties. Background: Clinical assessment of balance and postural disorders is usually carried out through several common practices including tests such as the Subjective Visual Vertical (SVV) and Limit of Stability (LOS). Nowadays, several cutting-edge technologies have been proposed as supporting tools for stability evaluation. Extended Reality (XR) emerges as a powerful instrument. This proof-of-concept study aims to assess the feasibility and potential clinical utility of a novel MR-based framework integrating HoloLens 2, Wii Balance Board, and Azure Kinect for multimodal balance assessment. An innovative test is also introduced, the Innovative Dynamic Balance Assessment (IDBA), alongside an MR version of the SVV test and the evaluation of their performance in a cohort of healthy individuals. Results: All participants reported SVV deviations within the clinically accepted ±2° range. The IDBA results revealed consistent sway and angular profiles across participants, with statistically significant differences in posture control between opposing target directions. System outputs were consistent, with integrated parameters offering a comprehensive representation of postural strategies. Conclusions: The MR-based framework successfully delivers integrated, multimodal measurements of postural control in healthy individuals. These findings support its potential use in future clinical applications for balance disorder assessment and personalized rehabilitation. Full article

This study focuses on producing and processing highly aligned tapes from recycled carbon fibers (rCFs). The rCFs are processed with a modified carding machine, oriented through a specialized subsequent process and consolidated into a semi-finished product. These rCF-tapes are placed onto a two-dimensional tool using an adapted automated fiber placement (AFP) technology to demonstrate a novel approach of producing composites from highly oriented recycled materials. The semi-finished stacks are consolidated in a heating press and test coupons are tested according to corresponding standards. The rCF-tapes are evaluated using methods such as tensile and flexural testing and determination of fiber volume content. Mechanical values are assessed by processing various generations of rCF-tapes and comparing them to each other and to virgin fiber tapes (vCF-tapes) made of the same type of carbon fiber and matrix. Microscopic imaging is also performed to analyze the quality of the resulting composites. In this study, a tensile strength of up to 1100 MPa in the fiber direction and stiffness of up to 80 GPa at a fiber volume content (FVC) of approximately 40% were achieved. The results highlight the strong potential and benefits of using highly oriented rCF-tapes and demonstrate the suitability of fiber placement technologies for those recycled materials. Full article

The apoplast is often the first point of contact between plant cells and invading pathogens, serving as an important site for defense signaling. Pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP), a ribosome-inactivating protein from Phytolacca americana (pokeweed), is localized to the apoplast and is hypothesized to accompany a pathogen to the cytosol, where it would inactivate host ribosomes to prevent pathogen spread. However, it is not known whether PAP interacts with other proteins in the apoplast. In this study, we identified Phytolacca americana cysteine protease 1 (PaCP1), an extracellular cysteine protease, as a novel PAP interactor. Sequence and structural analyses classified PaCP1 as a member of the C1A subfamily of papain-like cysteine proteases. Immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry, and yeast two-hybrid analysis showed that PAP specifically binds the mature, active form of PaCP1. Curiously, PaCP1 cleaves PAP at its N- and C-termini, generating peptides that enhance MAPK phosphorylation in pokeweed leaves, indicating their potential role in stress signaling. PaCP1 processing of PAP to generate bioactive peptides diversifies the function of a ribosome-inactivating protein beyond its canonical inhibition of translation. Our findings present a novel extracellular role for PAP and advance our understanding of how protein interactions in the apoplast contribute to plant immune responses. Full article
