The tortured and mutilated bodies of seven virgin martyrs stand side by side in an antependium woven around 1430 in Nuremberg. The Virgin Martyrs Tapestry is a striking representation of female saints’ martyrdoms that has yet to be fully analyzed for its potential contributions to discourses about hagiographic iconography, suffering and pain, religious constructs of gender, and sexualized violence in the fifteenth century. Nuanced interpretations of the iconography, with reference to images of Christ, enlighten and recontextualize the tapestry’s brutal depiction of the virgin martyrs. My analysis of the tapestry engages with this unusual presentation of virgin martyrs, stripped and statically accepting brutal torture that far exceeds their textual legends by weapons wielded by disembodied hands, as avenues for imitatio Christi. This interpretation considers the tapestry’s visual program, its enigmatic portrayal of torturing hands, late medieval attitudes toward pain and suffering, and the phenomenon of Christian women “becoming male” to transcend their femininity. Theologically and iconographically, the martyrs’ portrayals in the tapestry mirror the human and divine aspects of Christ. Full article

The crown conveys a rich tapestry of history and deep cultural resonances among the Yoruba people of South-western Nigeria, beyond its representation as an emblem of leadership, royalty, and nobility. This article explores layers of the meaning of crown in the Yoruba personal naming system. It relies on an ethnopragmatic theory to analyse the cultural significance and symbolic impact of crown-related names among the Yoruba. Drawing on a qualitative research approach using participant observation and semi-structured interviews with 25 participants who were purposively sampled in Ikeja, Lagos State, we argue that crown-related names are not mere identifiers or person reference labels, but they provide cultural insights and reflections on the foundation of authority and continuity, and carry the aspirational principles of the Yoruba traditional structure. The names symbolise personal journey; reinforce the hierarchical structure of the Yoruba society; and highlight the people’s deep connection to their ancestral lineage. This study concludes that crown-related names encapsulate the values, beliefs, and social structures of the Yoruba society, serving as enduring markers of dynastic identity and cultural values. In this way, crown-related names represent badges of honour that validate their bearers’ self-worth and dignity. Full article

The Sistine Chapel, originally designed to accommodate papal ceremonies, featured a system for hanging tapestries that ensured they were deployed according to the liturgical calendar. These textiles not only served as temporary decorative elements but also contributed to the acoustical environment. Historical records suggest that Renaissance popes, particularly Leo X, were attuned to the impact of textiles on sound, experimenting with their placement to optimize acoustics for sermons and polyphonic music. Given the lack of direct historical acoustical measurements, this study employs a computational simulation approach to model the chapel’s acoustics with and without the presence of tapestries and human occupancy. A crucial first step involved characterizing the absorption coefficients of surface finishings in order to obtain a reliable model of the space and investigate modifications induced by tapestries. The study revealed that the presence of tapestries reduced reverberation time at mid-frequencies from 7.4 s to 5.1 s in the empty chapel and from 4.1 s to 3.4 s when occupied. The results corroborate historical observations, who noted the effects of tapestries on vocal clarity in papal ceremonies. The findings demonstrate that textiles played a significant role in controlling acoustics within the Sistine Chapel, complementing the liturgical experience. Full article

The ancestry of domestic species from their closest wild relatives is one of the most debated and intriguing topics in evolutionary genetics. This review synthesizes current scientific understanding of the phylogenetic relationships between wild mouflon populations and domestic sheep (Ovis aries). It delves into the complex ancestry, tracing the primary role of the Asiatic mouflon (Ovis gmelini) as the progenitor, while also addressing the debated contributions of other wild Ovis species. The report explores the insights gained from diverse genetic markers, including mitochondrial DNA haplogroups and comprehensive whole-genome sequencing, highlighting their strengths, limitations, and the resolution of phylogenetic discrepancies. The multi-faceted taming process is examined, discussing proposed evolutionary mechanisms such as the domestication syndrome and thyroid hormone hypotheses, alongside human-mediated selection for key phenotypic traits like horn morphology, coat type, and tail characteristics. Furthermore, the pervasive role of hybridization and introgression between wild and domestic populations is analyzed, detailing its impact on genetic distinctiveness, adaptive potential, and the critical implications for conservation strategies. Finally, the review addresses ongoing scientific debates, particularly concerning the taxonomic classification of European mouflon, and identifies crucial avenues for future research to further unravel the intricate evolutionary tapestry of Ovis species. To ensure taxonomic consistency and promote conservation, nomenclature should be updated across all public repositories. Following the widely accepted classification that recognizes its lineage from the Asian mouflon, the Corsican and Sardinian mouflon should be designated as Ovis gmelini musimon. Full article

This paper contributes conceptually and empirically to a more rigorous understanding of the role of intellectual capital in the sustainable development of the BRICS+ bloc. We investigate the growing command of technical competencies over social competencies across the entire knowledge process. A range of factors, including the ever-increasing tension between AI and humans, the multidimensional nature of intellectual capital, and a focus on competency-based approaches, shape the theory of a knowledge economy. This study presents a spatial modeling approach to analyze the sustainable development of economic systems, reevaluates the importance of intellectual capital in the era of Industry 4.0, introduces the concept of scientific management of intellectual capital by categorizing it into the AI, individual, and collective human mind, and enhances the methodology of managing the knowledge economy to foster intellectual capital development. The primary finding of the research is that the advancement of the knowledge economy is driving digital communication and network-based collaboration on a larger scale within the BRICS+ bloc. Policy implications are intricately linked to the necessity for the holistic development of intellectual capital, encompassing both human and artificial intelligence. This development requires enhancements in quality of life and living standards, advancements in education and healthcare, optimization of the labor market, and reinforcing its connection with the educational sector. Concurrently, it is vital to stimulate research and development (R&D), support the commercialization of high-tech innovations, and accelerate the process of robotization. These combined efforts are essential to fostering economic growth effectively. Full article

Dyed wool samples and lake pigments prepared from the same dyestuffs were exposed to light over the course of 14 months. Brazilwood or sappanwood, cochineal, madder, and weld were used for both wools and pigments, with the addition of dyer’s broom, indigo, and tannin-containing black dyes for the wools and eosin for the pigments. The wools were dyed within the MODHT European project on historic tapestries (2002–2005), using recipes derived from fifteenth- to seventeenth-century sources. The pigments were prepared according to European recipes of the same period, or using late nineteenth-century French or English recipes. Colour measurements made throughout the experiment allowed for overall colour difference (ΔE00) to be tracked and half-lives to be calculated for some of the colour changes. Alterations in the samples’ hue and chroma were also monitored, and spectral information was collected. The results showed that, for both textiles and pigments, madder is the most stable red dye, followed by cochineal, and then brazilwood. Eosin was the most fugitive sample examined. Comparisons of textile and lake samples derived from the same dyestuff, whether red or yellow, indicate that the colourants are more stable when used as textile dyes than in analogous lake pigments. This study traces the origin and migration of the Nsit Clan of the Ibibio ethnic nationality, focusing on its distinct characteristics. The origin and migration of the Western Nsit Clan in the Niger Delta of Nigeria constitute a complex historical narrative shaped by a confluence of cultural, economic, and environmental factors. Rooted in pre-colonial times, this study delves into the clan’s ancestral origins, tracing the intricate patterns of migration that have defined its historical trajectory. Drawing from a diverse range of primary sources, including oral traditions, and anthropological findings, this research illuminates the cultural dynamics that propelled the clan’s movement across the Niger Delta region. This study also explores the impact of external influences, such as trade and colonialism, on the migration patterns and socio-political organization of the Western Nsit Clan. By unraveling the historical tapestry of this community, this research contributes valuable insights into the broader understanding of the Niger Delta’s rich and multifaceted history. Traditional ethnographic methods have long been employed to study craft practices, yet they often fall short of capturing the full depth of embodied knowledge, material interactions, and procedural workflows inherent in craftsmanship. This paper introduces a digitally enhanced ethnographic framework that integrates Motion Capture, 3D scanning, audiovisual documentation, and semantic knowledge representation to document both the tangible and dynamic aspects of craft processes. By distinguishing between endurant (tools, materials, objects) and perdurant (actions, events, transformations) entities, we propose a structured methodology for analyzing craft gestures, material behaviors, and production workflows. The study applies this proposed framework to eight European craft traditions—including glassblowing, tapestry weaving, woodcarving, porcelain pottery, marble carving, silversmithing, clay pottery, and textile weaving—demonstrating the adaptability of digital ethnographic tools across disciplines. Through a combination of multimodal data acquisition and expert-driven annotation, we present a comprehensive model for craft documentation that enhances the preservation, education, and analysis of artisanal knowledge. This research contributes to the ongoing evolution of ethnographic methods by bridging digital technology with Cultural Heritage studies, offering a robust framework for understanding the mechanics and meanings of craft practices. The conservation of historic tapestries is crucial due to the fragility of their materials and their cultural relevance. This paper reports on an investigation into the development of HeriTex, a non-invasive, innovative system for evaluating the structural integrity of historic tapestries, with a particular focus on measuring material loss. The research analyzed the relationship between transmitted infrared radiation and the weight loss per unit area (expressed in g/cm2) in the weakened areas of the tapestry. As a necessary first step, the system was calibrated using a limited range of wool thread weights before conducting experimental measurements on a historic tapestry fragment provided by the Royal Tapestry Factory in Madrid. The investigation demonstrated a strong correlation between the transmittance values and the loss of material weight per unit area. The results showed that the transmittance decreases exponentially as the weight per unit area increases. By applying a non-linear least squares (NLLS) fitting model, additional weight per unit area values in the tapestry were estimated based on their corresponding transmittance values. The HeriTex system enables the identification, quantification, and mapping of damage regions, demonstrating its potential as a valuable tool for more accurate assessment of the condition of historic tapestries by providing quantitative data on their structural integrity. By borrowing the metaphor of the ‘tapestry of existence’ to discuss the matter of fate in Homer’s Iliad, we selected four threads that are interwoven in the warp of each hero’s destiny—that of necessity/fatality, the relations between Zeus and the Moîra, the plots and tricks of the gods, and fate and human actions—with the aim of inviting the reader to appreciate the texture of the work with the passages that most caught our attention, without the intention of exhausting the subject. To do so, we draw upon the origin of the word Moîra in anthropology, as well as some of Heidegger’s ideas and those of other commentators to enrich the discussion. Full article

The confluence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing heralds a paradigm shift in data-driven applications, promising unprecedented insights and automation across critical sectors like healthcare, smart cities, and industrial automation. However, this transformative synergy introduces a complex tapestry of security vulnerabilities stemming from the intrinsic resource limitations of IoT devices and the inherent complexities of cloud infrastructures. This survey delves into the escalating threats—from conventional data breaches and Application programming interface (API) exploits to emerging vectors such as adversarial artificial intelligence (AI), quantum-resistant attacks, and sophisticated insider threats—that imperil the integrity and resilience of IoT–cloud ecosystems. We critically evaluated existing security paradigms, including encryption, access control, and service-level agreements, juxtaposed with cutting-edge approaches like AI-driven anomaly detection, blockchain-secured frameworks, and lightweight cryptographic solutions. By systematically mapping the landscape of security challenges and mitigation strategies, this work identified the following critical research imperatives: the development of standardized, end-to-end security architectures, the integration of post-quantum cryptography for resource-constrained IoT devices, and the fortification of resource isolation in multi-tenant cloud environments. A comprehensive comparative analysis of prior research, coupled with an in-depth case study on IoT–cloud security within the healthcare domain, illuminates the practical challenges and innovative solutions crucial for real-world deployment. Ultimately, this survey advocates for the development of scalable, adaptive security frameworks that leverage the synergistic power of AI and blockchain, ensuring the secure and efficient evolution of IoT–cloud ecosystems in the face of evolving cyber threats. Background: The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system represents the most polymorphic segment within human DNA sequences and constitutes a core component of immune defense responses and in understanding population genetics. This research investigates the distribution of HLA class I and II polymorphisms across different ethnic groups in Kazakhstan, offering valuable insights into the genetic diversity and demographic evolution within this region. Methods: We performed an in-depth examination of HLA class I and II polymorphisms across diverse ethnic communities living in Kazakhstan, including Kazakhs, Russians, Uzbeks, Ukrainians, Germans, Tatars, and Koreans. Utilizing data from high-resolution HLA typing studies allowed us to assess allele frequencies alongside haplotype distributions while analyzing genetic interrelations between these populations. Additionally, we performed comparative assessments with global HLA databases to determine the genetic affiliations between these groups and their relationships with neighboring and more distant populations. Results: Our study revealed over 200 HLA alleles within the analyzed populations, and significant variations were observed in their allele and haplotype frequencies. Notably, the Kazakh group exhibited strong genetic ties to Asian and Siberian demographics; conversely, other ethnicities showed associations reflective of their historical roots. Notable alleles included HLA-A*02:01, B*07:02, C*07:02, DRB1*07:01, and DQB1*03:01, commonly observed across various groups. Linkage disequilibrium analysis revealed the presence of population-specific haplotypes, highlighting distinct genetic structures within these communities. Conclusions: The findings highlight the significant genetic diversity in Kazakhstan, influenced by its geographical location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. These results are pertinent to immunogenetics, transplantation medicine, and personalized healthcare within Kazakhstan and adjacent regions. Future research should expand the sample size and explore disease associations to enhance our comprehension of HLA genetics across Central Asia. Full article

Today, among various significant aspects, its cultural heritage necessitates the elaboration of a proactive conservation strategy, which should take advantage of the intrinsic support provided by the efforts documented in the literature that have been made in several scientific fields, disciplines, and directions over the years. Most historic religious monumental buildings in Old Cairo, in particular, not only face the effects of local seismic hazards, which are emphasized by damage by past earthquakes, but also suffer the consequences of several influencing parameters that are unique to the Cairo city context. In this sense, it is known that the structural retrofitting of these monumental buildings requires sound knowledge of technical details and criticalities, based on inspections, numerical simulations, the in-field integration of technologies, and laboratory tests. Many other gaps should also be addressed, and a sound conservation strategy should be elaborated on the basis of a multi-target approach, which could account for the structural engineering perspective but also contextualize the retrofit within the state of the art and the evolution of past events. This is the target of the contemporary “Particular Relevance” bilateral Italy–Egypt “CoReng” project, seeking to define a multidisciplinary strategy for conserving Old Cairo’s cultural heritage and focusing primarily on the case study of the Religions Complex. To this end, a review analysis of major oversights and challenges relating to historic monuments in Old Cairo is presented in this paper. Learning from past accidents and experiences is, in fact, the primary supporting basis for elaborating new operational steps and efficient approaches to mitigating challenges and minimizing the consequences of emergency events. As such, this review contribution specifically focuses on the structural vulnerability of historic monumental buildings in Old Cairo, reporting on past efforts, past strategy proposals, research experiences, and trends.
