Due to the limitations of high speed and short time in plasma-spraying experiments, this study established a simulation model of Y2O3 multi-particle deposition to discuss the influence of laser loading on coating-deposition behavior and performance. According to the simulation results, the temperature of coating particles under laser loading displays a gradient distribution, with the surface having the highest temperature. The particles deposit on the substrate to form uniform pits of a certain depth. Plastic deformation causes maximum stress to occur at the edges of the pits and maximum strain to occur on the sidewall of the pits. The deposition region had both compressive and tensile stresses, and laser loading greatly reduced the tensile stresses’ magnitude while having less of an impact on the particle strains. Laser assistance promotes further melting of particles, reduces coating thickness, lowers coating porosity to 3.94%, increases hardness to 488 MPa, reduces maximum pore size from 68 µm to 32 µm, and causes particle sputtering to gradually evolve from being disc-shaped to being finger-shaped, creating cavities at the coating edges. The comparison between the surface morphology and the cross-section pores of the experimentally prepared coating verified the rationality and viability of the simulation work. Full article

Electroless nickel deposition (ELD) is an autocatalytic technique extensively used to impart conductive, protective, and mechanical functionalities to inherently non-conductive synthetic substrates. This review systematically explores the fundamental mechanisms of electroless nickel deposition, emphasising recent advancements in surface activation methods, solvent systems, and microstructural control. Critical analysis reveals that bio-inspired activation methods, such as polydopamine (PDA) and tannic acid (TA), significantly enhance coating adhesion and durability compared to traditional chemical etching and plasma treatments. Additionally, solvent engineering, particularly using polar aprotic solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethanol-based systems, emerges as a key strategy for achieving uniform, dense, and flexible coatings, overcoming limitations associated with traditional aqueous baths. The review also highlights that microstructural tailoring, specifically the development of amorphous-nanocrystalline hybrid nickel coatings, effectively balances mechanical robustness (hardness exceeding 800 HV), flexibility, and corrosion resistance, making these coatings particularly suitable for wearable electronic textiles and smart materials. Furthermore, commercial examples demonstrate the real-world applicability and market readiness of nickel-coated synthetic fibres. Despite significant progress, persistent challenges remain, including reliable long-term adhesion, internal stress management, and environmental sustainability. Future research should prioritise environmentally benign plating baths, standardised surface activation protocols, and scalable deposition processes to fully realise the industrial potential of electroless nickel coatings. In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward the development of coating materials capable of tailoring surface properties for various functional applications. Transition metal nitrides, in particular, have garnered interest due to their superior physical and chemical properties, including high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and strong corrosion resistance. In this study, a fabrication process for CrN-based thin films was developed by combining reactive direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS) with post-deposition annealing in air. CrN coatings were deposited by reactive dcMS using different argon-nitrogen (Ar:N2) gas ratios (4:1, 3:1, 2:1, and 1:1), followed by annealing at 550 °C for 1.5 h in ambient air. XRD and EDS analysis revealed that this treatment results in the formation of a composite phase comprising CrN and Cr2O3. The resulting coating exhibited favorable mechanical and tribological properties, including a maximum hardness of 12 GPa, a low wear coefficient of 0.254 and a specific wear rate of 7.05 × 10−6 mm3/N·m, making it a strong candidate for advanced protective coating applications. Tidal seashell waste represents an abundant, underutilized marine resource that poses environmental disposal challenges but offers potential as a sustainable bio-filler in epoxy composites. This study investigates its incorporation into bio-based epoxy systems to reduce reliance on non-renewable materials and promote circular economy objectives. Processed seashell powder was blended into epoxy formulations, and response surface methodology was applied to optimize filler loading and resin composition. Comprehensive characterization included tensile strength, impact resistance, hardness, density, and thermal conductivity testing, along with microscopy analysis to evaluate filler dispersion and interfacial bonding. The optimized composites demonstrated improved hardness, density, and thermal stability while maintaining acceptable tensile and impact strength. Microscopy confirmed uniform filler distribution at optimal loadings but revealed agglomeration and void formation at higher contents, which can reduce interfacial bonding efficiency. These findings highlight the feasibility of valorizing marine waste as a reinforcing filler in sustainable composite production, supporting environmental goals and offering a scalable approach for the development of durable, lightweight materials suitable for structural, coating, and industrial applications. This study presents the structural and compositional characterisation of a newly developed Ti55Al27Mo13 alloy synthesised via aluminothermic reaction. The alloy was designed to overcome the limitations of conventional processing routes for high–melting–point elements such as Ti and Mo, enabling the formation of a complex, multi–phase microstructure in a single high–temperature step. The aim was to develop and characterise a material with microstructural features expected to enhance wear resistance, oxidation behaviour, and thermal stability in future applications. The alloy is intended as a precursor for composite nanopowders and surface coatings applied to aluminium–, magnesium–, and iron–based substrates subjected to mechanical and thermal loading. Elemental analysis (XRF, EDS) confirmed the presence of Ti, Al, Mo, and minor elements such as Si, Fe, and C. Microstructural investigations using laser confocal and scanning electron microscopy revealed a heterogeneous structure comprising solid solutions, eutectic regions, and dispersed oxide and carbide phases. Notably, the alloy exhibits high hardness values, reaching >2400 HV in Al2O3 regions and ~1300 HV in Mo– and Si–enriched solid solutions. These results suggest the material’s substantial potential for protective surface engineering. Further tribological, thermal, and corrosion testing, conducted with meticulous attention to detail, will follow to validate its functional performance in target applications. Full article

The aim of the current study is to investigate the mechanical properties and ballistic performance of HARDOX 450 steel for defense applications in different conditions: uncoated, alumina-coated, and LINE X polyurea-coated. Tensile tests and Vickers microhardness measurements were conducted, along with fracture surface analysis using stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and computed tomography. Experimental results showed that uncoated HARDOX 450 steel exhibited the highest strength and hardness, with ductile fracture features. Polyurea-coated HARDOX 450 steel samples retained good mechanical properties and demonstrated effective ballistic protection, including the containment of fragments. In contrast, alumina-coated HARDOX 450 steel samples exhibited reduced strength and ballistic resistance, attributed to the microstructural changes in HARDOX 450 steel caused by the high-temperature deposition process of alumina. Numerical simulations performed with the 5.56 × 45 mm bullet used in the simulation, along with its ballistic impact interaction with the Hardox 450 target model, aligned well with experimental ballistic impact results for all the samples. Overall, LINE X polyurea coating on HARDOX 450 steel proved to be the more suitable coating for applications requiring a balance of mechanical strength and ballistic impact resistance. Full article

Ultra-fine-grained bainitic (UFGB) steels offer excellent mechanical properties, which can be further improved by applying diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings. However, poor adhesion between the coating and substrate remains a key limitation. Since the steel’s microstructure degrades at high temperatures, enhancing adhesion without heating the substrate is essential. This study investigates surface hardening combined with simultaneous nitrogen and hydrogen doping during the Radio Frequency Chemical Vapor Deposition (RFCVD) process to improve coating performance. Varying gas compositions were tested to assess their effects on coating properties. Nitrogen incorporation decreased hardness from 12 GPa to 9 GPa but improved adhesion, while hydrogen limited damage after coating failure. Optimizing the gas mixture led to enhanced adhesion and wear resistance. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirmed that the optimized coatings had the highest sp3 bond content and elevated nitrogen levels. While both hardness and adhesion contributed to wear resistance, no direct link to coating thickness was found. Overall, co-doping with nitrogen and hydrogen is an effective approach to improve adhesion and wear resistance without requiring high processing temperatures or complex equipment. Full article

65 Mn is a high-quality carbon structural steel that exhibits excellent mechanical properties and machinability. It finds broad applications in machinery manufacturing, agricultural tools, and mining equipment, and is commonly used for producing mechanical parts, springs, and cutting tools. Fe901 is an iron-based alloy that exhibits excellent hardness, structural stability, and wear resistance. It is widely used in surface engineering applications, especially laser cladding, due to its ability to form dense and crack-free metallurgical coatings. To enhance the surface hardness and wear resistance of 65 Mn steel, this study employs a laser melting process to deposit a multi-layer Fe901 alloy coating. The phase composition, microstructure, microhardness, and wear resistance of the coatings are investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Vickers hardness testing, and friction-wear testing. The results show that the coatings are dense and uniform, without visible defects. The main phases in the coating include solid solution, carbides, and α-phase. The microstructure comprises dendritic, columnar, and equiaxed crystals. The microhardness of the cladding layer increases significantly, with the multilayer coating reaching 3.59 times the hardness of the 65 Mn substrate. The coatings exhibit stable and relatively low friction coefficients ranging from 0.38 to 0.58. Under identical testing conditions, the wear resistance of the coating surpasses that of the substrate, and the multilayer coating shows better wear performance than the single-layer one. Plow loosening machines are essential agricultural machinery in the agricultural production process. Improving the surface strengthening process and extending the working life of the plow teeth of the plow loosening machine are of great significance. In this paper, the preparation of Stellite6/Cu composite coating on the surface of 316L steel substrate intended for strengthening the plow teeth of a plow loosening machine using laser cladding technology was studied. The influence of different laser process parameters on the microstructure and properties of Stellite6/Cu composite coating was investigated. The composite coating powder was composed of Stellite6 powder with a different weight percent of copper. Microstructural analysis, phase composition, elemental distribution, microhardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings on the plow teeth were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness testing, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), friction and wear testing, and electrochemical workstation measurements. The results showed that (1) When the laser power was 1000 W, the average hardness of the prepared Stellite6/Cu composite layer achieved the highest hardness, approximately 1.36 times higher than the average hardness of the substrate, and the composite coating prepared exhibited the best wear resistance; (2) When the scanning speed was 800 mm/min, the composite coating exhibited the lowest average friction coefficient and the optimal corrosion resistance in a 3.5% wt.% NaCl solution with a self-corrosion current density of −7.55 µA/cm2; (3) When the copper content was 1 wt.%, the composite coating achieved the highest average hardness with 515.2 HV, the lowest average friction coefficient with 0.424, and the best corrosion resistance with a current density of −8.878 µA/cm2. During the operation of structures, the components and materials from which they are made are exposed to various environmental, technological, and operational impacts. In this context, the use of a modified water-dispersion composition containing finely dispersed fillers with enhanced protective and performance characteristics proves to be effective. This article examines the development of a paint-and-coating composition using hollow glass microspheres and modified diatomite as finely dispersed fillers. The influence of technological factors on the properties of coating materials based on a synthesized acrylic dispersion and fillers—such as modified diatomite and hollow glass microspheres ranging from 20 to 100 μm in size with a bulk density of 0.107–0.252 g/cm3—is analyzed. The optimal formulation of the coating materials was determined to ensure the required coating quality. Experimental results demonstrate the improved strength and hardness of the coating due to the use of acrylic dispersion obtained through an emulsifier-free method and modifiers in the form of finely dispersed fillers. It has been established that the resulting samples also exhibit high adhesion to mineral and metallic substrates, along with excellent corrosion resistance. Moreover, the incorporation of acrylic dispersion contributes to increased elasticity of the coating, resulting in improved resistance to washing and abrasion. The developed protective material can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including walls, ceilings, and roofs of buildings and structures, pipelines, and many other applications. Thus, modified water-dispersion compositions based on synthesized acrylic dispersion showed the following results: resistance to sticking—5, which is the best; chemical resistance and gloss level with standard single-phase acrylic dispersion—no destruction or change in gloss. The adhesion of coatings cured under natural conditions and under the influence of UV radiation was 1 point. The developed formulations for obtaining water-dispersion paint and varnish compositions based on synthesized polymer dispersions, activated diatomite, and hollow glass microspheres, meet all the regulatory requirements for paint and varnish materials in terms of performance, and in terms of economic indicators, the cost of 1 kg of paint is 30% lower than the standard. The design of friction materials with integrated friction reduction and wear resistance functions has been a research challenge for many researchers and scholars, based on this problem, this paper proposes a nickel-based hard-soft composite coating structure. With 20CrMo steel as the matrix material, Ni20 powder doped with reinforced phase WC as hard coating material, using laser melting technology to prepare nickel-based hard coating on the surface of 20CrMo. PTFE emulsion and MoS2 as a soft coating are prepared on the hard coating, and the nickel-based hard-soft composite coating is formed. At 6N-0.3 m/s, the new interface structure obtains the optimum tribological performance, and compared to 20CrMo, the friction coefficient and wear amount are reduced by 83% and 93% respectively. The new friction interface can obtain stable and prominent tribological properties at wide load and low to high speed, which can provide the guidance on the structural design of friction reduction and wear resistance materials. Long-chain imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) possess a broad-spectrum biological activity and are considered promising antifouling agents for protective coatings. A new hydrophobic IL, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (C12C1IM-DBS), has been synthesized, and a modified epoxy coating material containing 10, 20, and 30 wt% of this IL was prepared by dissolution of C12C1IM-DBS in commercial DER 331 epoxy resin, followed by a curing phase with diethylenetriamine. Infrared analysis revealed physicochemical interactions between the hydroxyl groups of the resin and the IL. Spectrophotometric studies showed no release of C12C1IM-DBS after 30 days of exposure of the modified coatings to water. The plasticizing effect of the IL on the epoxy resin was established by differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The introduction of 10 and 20% C12C1IM-DBS into DER 331 reduced its glass transition temperature from 122.8 °C to 109.3 and 91.5 °C, respectively. The hardness of epoxy resin decreased by approximately 26% after the introduction of the IL. Moreover, DER 331/C12C1IM-DBS coatings on steel substrates showed significantly improved impact resistance compared to neat resin. The antibiofilm efficiency of DER 331/C12C1IM-DBS coatings was evaluated by assessing the capability of two biofilm-forming model strains, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01, to form attached biofilms on the surface. The IL effectively inhibited S. aureus surface-associated biofilm development even at the lowest content of 10%. On the contrary, an approximately 50% inhibition of biofilm metabolic activity was detected for DER 331/C12C1IM-DBS coatings containing 20% and 30% of the IL. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the hydrophobic IL C12C1IM-DBS is an efficient modifying additive for epoxy resins, which can significantly improve their operational properties for various industrial applications. The friction surfacing (FS) process has emerged over the past few years as a method for joining both similar and dissimilar materials, for volume damage repair of defective components, and for corrosion protection. The possibility to produce a metallic coating by FS, without melting the material, classifies this technique as distinct from other standard methods. This unconventional deposition method is based on the severe plastic deformation that appears on a rotating metallic rod (consumable material) pressed against the substrate under an axial load. The present study aims to investigate the tribological properties and corrosion resistance provided by the aluminum-based FS coatings deposited onto a structural S235 steel substrate and further modified by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). During the PEO treatment, the formation of a ceramic film is enabled, while the hardness, chemical stability, corrosion, and wear resistance of the modified surfaces are considerably increased. The morpho-structural characteristics and chemical composition of the PEO-modified FS coatings are further investigated using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis and X-ray diffraction. Dry sliding wear testing of the PEO-modified aluminum-based coatings was carried out using a ball-on-disc configuration, while the corrosion resistance was electrochemically evaluated in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The corrosion rates of the aluminum-based coatings decreased significantly when the PEO treatment was applied, while the wear rate was substantially reduced compared to the untreated aluminum-based coating and steel substrate, respectively. Limited hardness and corrosion resistance restrict 7050 aluminum alloys in aggressive environments. Cr coatings, applied as single layers or over Ti, Al, or Ni buffer layers, were deposited onto 7050 aluminum alloy by direct-current magnetron sputtering; their microstructure, adhesion, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior were examined. The results indicate that introducing a buffer layer significantly enhances the bonding strength between a Cr coating and an aluminum alloy substrate, with the Ni buffer layer exhibiting the highest bonding strength, nearly three times that of the Cr coating alone. Furthermore, the buffer layer influences the mechanical properties of the Cr coatings, with Ni/Cr and Al/Cr coatings demonstrating increased hardness and elastic modulus. The Ni/Cr coating achieved the highest values of 3.95 GPa and 62.09 GPa, respectively. Regarding corrosion performance, The Cr coatings containing buffer layers showed markedly better corrosion resistance than the bare 7050 Al alloy. A compact Cr2O3 passive film formed on their surfaces, cutting the corrosion current density by roughly two orders of magnitude. Among all samples, the Ti/Cr coating performed best, registering the lowest current density (1.687 × 10−6 A cm−2) and the highest charge-transfer resistance (6090 Ω cm2). Full article

The hard-seed coat of Ormosia henryi significantly impedes germination efficiency in massive propagation, while conventional physical dormancy-breaking methods often result in compromised seed vigor, asynchronous seedling emergence, and diminished stress tolerance. Seed biopriming, an innovative technique involving the inoculation of beneficial microorganisms onto seed surfaces or into germination substrates, enhances germination kinetics and emergence uniformity through microbial metabolic functions and synergistic interactions with seed exudates. Notably, spermosphere-derived functional bacteria isolated from native spermosphere soil demonstrate superior colonization capacity and sustained bioactivity. This investigation employed selective inoculation of these indigenous functional strains to systematically analyze dynamic changes in endogenous phytohormones, enzymatic activities, and storage substances during critical germination phases, thereby elucidating the physiological mechanisms underlying biopriming-enhanced germination. The experimental results demonstrated significant improvements in germination parameters through biopriming. Inoculation with the Bacillus sp. strain achieved a peak germination rate (76.19%), representing a 16.19% increase over the control (p < 0.05). The biopriming treatment effectively improved the seed vigor, broke the impermeability of the seed coat, accelerated the germination speed, and positively regulated physiological indicators, especially amylase activity and the ratio of gibberellic acid to abscisic acid. This study establishes a theoretical framework for microbial chemotaxis and rhizocompetence in seed priming applications while providing an eco-technological solution for overcoming germination constraints in O. henryi cultivation. The optimized biopriming protocol addresses both low germination rates and post-germination growth limitations, providing technical support for the seedling cultivation of O. henryi. Full article
