This study presents a numerical and experimental evaluation of axial load transfer mechanisms in deep foundations constructed in stratified cohesive soils in İzmir, Türkiye. A full-scale bi-directional static load test equipped with strain gauges was conducted on a barrette pile to investigate depth-dependent mobilization of shaft resistance. A finite element model was developed and calibrated using field-observed load–settlement and strain data to replicate the pile–soil interaction and deformation behavior. The analysis revealed a shaft-dominated load transfer behavior, with progressive mobilization concentrated in intermediate-depth cohesive layers. Sensitivity analysis identified the undrained stiffness (Eu) as the most influential parameter governing pile settlement. A strong polynomial correlation was established between calibrated Eu values and SPT N60, offering a practical tool for preliminary design. Additionally, strain energy distribution was evaluated as a supplementary metric, enhancing the interpretation of mobilization zones beyond conventional stress-based methods. The integrated approach provides valuable insights for performance-based foundation design in layered cohesive ground, supporting the development of site-calibrated numerical models informed by full-scale testing data. The stability of shield tunnel segmental linings is highly sensitive to the lateral pressure coefficient, especially under weak, heterogeneous, and variable geological conditions. However, the mechanical behavior of steel plate-reinforced linings under such conditions remains insufficiently characterized. This study aims to investigate the effects of varying lateral pressures on the structural performance of reinforced tunnel linings. To achieve this, a custom-designed full-circumference loading and unloading self-balancing apparatus was developed for scaled-model testing of shield tunnels. The experimental methodology allowed for precise control of loading paths, enabling the simulation of realistic ground stress states and the assessment of internal force distribution, joint response, and load transfer mechanisms during the elastic stage of the structure. Results reveal that increased lateral pressure enhances the stiffness and bearing capacity of the reinforced lining. The presence and orientation of segment joints, as well as the bonding performance between epoxy resin and expansion bolts at the reinforcement interface, significantly influence stress redistribution in steel plate-reinforced zones. These findings not only deepen the understanding of tunnel behavior in complex geological environments but also offer practical guidance for optimizing reinforcement design and improving the durability and safety of shield tunnels. The cross-sectional dimensions of structural elements in a structure are design elements that need to be carefully designed and are related to the stiffness of the structure. Various optimization processes are applied to determine the optimum cross-sectional dimensions of beams or columns in structures. By repeating the optimization processes for multiple load scenarios, it is possible to create a data set that shows the optimum design section properties. However, this step means repeating the same processes to produce the optimum cross-sectional dimensions. Artificial intelligence technology offers a short-cut solution to this by providing the opportunity to train itself with previously generated optimum cross-sectional dimensions and infer new cross-sectional dimensions. By processing the data, the artificial neural network can generate models that predict the cross-section for a new structural element. In this study, an optimization process is applied to a simple tubular column and an I-section beam, and the results are compiled to create a data set that presents the optimum section dimensions as a class. The harmony search (HS) algorithm, which is a metaheuristic method, was used in optimization. An artificial neural network (ANN) was created to predict the cross-sectional dimensions of the sample structural elements. The neural architecture search (NAS) method, which incorporates many metaheuristic algorithms designed to search for the best artificial neural network architecture, was applied. In this method, the best values of various parameters of the neural network, such as activation function, number of layers, and neurons, are searched for in the model with a tool called HyperNetExplorer. Model metrics were calculated to evaluate the prediction success of the developed model. An effective neural network architecture for column and beam elements is obtained. Full article

Slab-replacement operations are crucial for restoring deteriorated CRTS I slab ballastless tracks to operational standards. This study investigates the structural implications of the operation by evaluating the strength characteristics and material properties of track components both prior to and following replacement. Apparent strength was measured using rebound hammer tests on three categories of slabs: retained, deteriorated, and newly installed track slabs. In addition, samples of old and new filling resins were collected and tested to determine their elastic moduli. These empirical data were subsequently used to develop a refined finite-element model that captures both pre- and post-replacement conditions. Under varying temperature loads, disparities in component performance were found to significantly affect stress distribution. Specifically, before replacement, deteriorated track slabs exhibited 10.74% lower strength compared to adjacent retained slabs, whereas, after replacement, new slabs showed a 25.26% increase in strength over retained ones. The elastic modulus of old filling resin was measured at 5.19 kN/mm, 35.13% below the minimum design requirement, while the new resin reached 10.48 kN/mm, exceeding the minimum by 31.00%. Although the slab-replacement operation enhances safety by addressing structural deficiencies, it may also create new weak points in adjacent areas, where insufficient stiffness results in stress concentrations and potential damage. This study offers critical insights for optimizing maintenance strategies and improving the long-term performance of ballastless track systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: The simulation of human movement offers transformative potential for the design of medical devices, particularly in understanding the cause–effect dynamics in individuals with neurological or musculoskeletal impairments. This study presents a simulation-driven framework to determine the optimal ankle–foot orthosis (AFO) stiffness for mitigating the risk of ankle sprains due to excessive subtalar inversion during high-impact activities, such as landing from a free fall. Methods: We employed biomechanical simulations to assess the influence of translational stiffness on subtalar inversion control, given that inversion angles exceeding 25 degrees are strongly correlated with injury risk. Simulations were conducted using a musculoskeletal model with and without a passive AFO; the stiffness varied in three anatomical directions. A Design of Experiments (DoE) approach was utilized to capture nonlinear interactions among stiffness parameters. Results: The results indicated that increased translational stiffness significantly reduced inversion angles to safer levels, though direction–dependent effects were noted. Based on these insights, we developed a 4D visualization tool that integrates simulation data with an interactive color–coded interface to depict ”safe design” zones for various AFO stiffness configurations. This tool supports clinicians in selecting stiffness values that optimize both safety and functional performance. Conclusions: The proposed framework enhances clinical decision-making and engineering processes by enabling more accurate and individualized AFO designs. Full article

The structural design of rail vehicle bodies significantly influences rail vehicle performance, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency. This study presents a comparative analysis of three key concepts of a rail vehicle body, namely a differential, an integral, and a hybrid structure, with a focus on their structural principles, material utilization, and implications for manufacturability and maintenance. Three rail vehicle body variants were developed, each incorporating a low-floor configuration to enhance accessibility and interior layout flexibility. The research explores the suitable placement of technical components such as a power unit and an air-conditioning system, and it evaluates interior layouts aimed at maximizing both passenger capacity and their travelling comfort. Key features, including door and window technologies, thermal comfort solutions, and seating arrangements, are also analyzed. The study emphasizes the importance of compromises between structural stiffness, reparability, production complexity, and passenger-oriented design considerations. A part of the research includes a proposal of three variants of a rail vehicle body frame, together with their strength analysis by means of the finite element method. These analyses identified that the maximal permissible stresses for the individual versions of the frame were not exceeded. Findings contribute to the development of more efficient, accessible, and sustainable regional passenger rail vehicles. Full article

Red blood cell (RBC) production from bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells (BMHSCs) in vitro overlooks the mechanical signals of the bone marrow niche and overly relies on growth factors. Considering that the fate of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is determined by the natural bone marrow microenvironment, differences in mechanical microenvironments provide a reference for the regulation of HSC differentiation. This study seek to reveal the role of mechanobiology cues in erythropoiesis and provide a new perspective for the design of in vitro erythropoiesis platforms. The hydrogel platforms we designed simulate the stiffness gradient of the bone marrow niche to culture HSCs and induce their differentiation into the erythroid system. Cells on the low-stiffness scaffold have higher potential for erythrocyte differentiation and faster differentiation efficiency and promote erythrocyte differentiation after erythropoietin (EPO) restriction. In vivo transplantation experiments demonstrated that these cells have the ability for continuous proliferation and differentiation into mature erythrocytes. By combining mechanical cues with in vitro erythrocyte production, this method is expected to provide insights for in vitro hematopoietic design and offer a scalable cell manufacturing platform for transfusion medicine. Existing risk assessment approaches for soft rock tunnels in fault-fractured zones typically employ single weighting schemes, inadequately integrate subjective and objective weights, and fail to define clear risk. This study proposes a risk-grading methodology that integrates an enhanced game theoretic weight-balancing algorithm with an optimized cloud entropy extension cloud model. Initially, a comprehensive indicator system encompassing geological (surrounding rock grade, groundwater conditions, fault thickness, dip, and strike), design (excavation cross-section shape, excavation span, and tunnel cross-sectional area), and support (initial support stiffness, support installation timing, and construction step length) parameters is established. Subjective weights obtained via the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) are combined with objective weights calculated using the entropy, coefficient of variation, and CRITIC methods and subsequently balanced through a game theoretic approach to mitigate bias and reconcile expert judgment with data objectivity. Subsequently, the optimized cloud entropy extension cloud algorithm quantifies the fuzzy relationships between indicators and risk levels, yielding a cloud association evaluation matrix for precise classification. A case study of a representative soft rock tunnel in a fault-fractured zone validates this method’s enhanced accuracy, stability, and rationality, offering a robust tool for risk management and design decision making in complex geological settings. Localized Compression Behavior of GFRP Grid Web–Concrete Composite Beams: Experimental, Numerical, and Analytical Studies

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites exhibit significant advantages over conventional structural webbing materials, including lightweight and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the localized compression performance of the proposed GFRP grid web–concrete composite beam through experimental and numerical analyses. Three specimen groups with variable shear-span ratios (λ = 1.43, 1.77) and local stiffener specimens were designed to assess their localized compressive behavior. Experimental results reveal that a 19.2% reduction in shear-span ratio enhances ultimate load capacity by 22.93% and improves stiffness by 66.85%, with additional performance gains of 77.53% in strength and 94.29% in stiffness achieved through local stiffener implementation. In addition, finite element (FE) analysis demonstrated a strong correlation with experimental results, showing less than 5% deviation in ultimate load predictions while accurately predicting stress distributions and failure modes. FE parametric analysis showed that increasing the grid thickness and decreasing the grid spacing within a reasonable range can considerably enhance the localized compression performance. The proposed analytical model, based on Winkler elastic foundation theory, predicts ultimate compression capacities within 10% of both the experimental and numerical results. However, the GFRP grid strength adjustment factor βg should be further refined through additional experiments and numerical analyses to improve reliability. Full article

This comprehensive review explores the expansive design space of network architectures and their significant impact on the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of hydrogel systems. By examining the intricate relationships between molecular structure, network connectivity, and resulting bulk properties, we provide critical insights into rational design strategies for tailoring hydrogel mechanics for specific applications. Recent advances in sequence-defined crosslinkers, dynamic covalent chemistries, and biomimetic approaches have significantly expanded the toolbox for creating hydrogels with precisely controlled viscoelasticity, stiffness, and stress relaxation behavior—properties that are crucial for biomedical applications, particularly in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. To address the unclear coupling mechanism between thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) and dynamic behaviors in planetary gear systems, a novel tribo-dynamic model for dual-star planetary gears considering TEHL effects is proposed. In this model, a TEHL surrogate model is first established to determine the oil film thickness and sliding friction force along the tooth meshing line. Subsequently, the dynamic model of the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is developed through coordinate transformations of the dual-star gear train. Finally, by integrating lubrication effects into both time-varying mesh stiffness and time-varying backlash, a tribo-dynamic model for the dual-star planetary gear transmission system is established. The study reveals that the lubricant film thickness is positively correlated with relative sliding velocity but negatively correlated with unit line load. Under high-speed conditions, a thickened oil film induces premature meshing contact, leading to meshing impacts. In contrast, under high-torque conditions, tooth deformation dominates meshing force fluctuations while lubrication influence diminishes. By establishing a test bench for the planetary gear transmission system, the obtained simulation conclusions are verified. This research provides theoretical and experimental support for the design of high-reliability planetary gear systems. Full article

Many bcc refractory alloys show excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, while their fabricability can be limited by brittleness near room temperature. For the purpose of predicting ductile alloys, a number of ductility metrics based on atomic structures and crystal properties, ranging from mechanistic to empirical, have been proposed. In this work, we propose an “average bond stiffness” as a new ductility metric that is also convenient to obtain from first-principles calculations, in addition to using the average magnitude of static displacements of atoms. The usefulness of average bond stiffness is validated by comparing first-principles calculation results to experimental data on the “rhenium effect” in Mo/W-base and V/Nb/Ta-base binary alloys. The average bond stiffness also correlates well with the room-temperature ductility of refractory high-entropy alloys, with a better performance than some ductility metrics previously reported. While in reality the ductility of an alloy can be influenced by many factors, from processing and microstructure, the average magnitude of static displacements and the average bond stiffness are atomistic-level features useful for design of alloy composition towards a desired level of ductility. Aluminum foam materials have gained significant attention over the past decade, particularly in the automotive industry, due to their excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio and superior energy absorption capabilities. In this study, a multiscale numerical material model was developed to accurately and efficiently simulate the vibrational behavior of aluminum foams. The foam specimens were categorized into four density classes based on their measured mass and calculated volume. Two specimens were selected to conduct CT (computerized tomography) scans and quantify the volume of air in their density class. Based on the CT measurements, a representative volume element (RVE) was built using ANSYS Material Designer (MD). The newly obtained material was employed in conducting normal mode numerical simulations. The resonance frequencies and response amplitudes were compared with physical experiments and showed correlation within 3%. These findings underscore the efficacy of using CT scans in foam to develop material models and accurately predict structural behavior. By conducting comprehensive investigations and numerical simulations, we established a correlation between physical tests and simulation results, highlighting the reliability of the developed models. Four composite configurations were fabricated at laboratory scale, combining two matrix types (unsaturated polyester resin and epoxy resin) and the presence or absence of a Coremat Xi3 middle layer. Tensile tests were conducted at four test rates (10 mm/min, 200 mm/min, 500 mm/min, and 1000 mm/min), ranging from quasi-static to moderately dynamic conditions. Tests were conducted using the Instron 5982 universal testing machine (from Laboratory for Advanced Materials and Tribology, INCAS Bucharest, Romania). The specimens have a rectangular cross section, in agreement with SR EN ISO 527-4:2023. For strain measurements, an Instron advanced video extensometer (AVE) was used. Key mechanical parameters, such as maximum force, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, strain at break, and energy absorption, were extracted and analyzed. Results show that the polyester-based composite without a mat interlayer displayed the best overall performance, with the highest ultimate strength (~280 MPa), significant energy absorption (~106 J), and a consistent increase in ductility with increasing test rate. In contrast, the epoxy composite with Coremat Xi3 exhibited lower stiffness and strength, but higher strain and energy absorption at higher test rates, indicating a progressive failure behavior. These findings enhance the understanding of the tensile response of composites made of quadriaxial glass fiber fabric and provide valuable design data for structural components in marine environments, where both strength and energy absorption are essential. These insights support producers and end-users of non-crimp fabrics in making experimentally based selections of a composite, technological strategies, and design optimization. Full article

The Effect of Aromatherapy on Post-Exercise Hypotension: A Pilot Study

The global prevalence of hypertension continues to rise, affecting an estimated one billion worldwide. Regular exercise is well recognized as a non-pharmacological approach for individuals with hypertension due to its blood pressure (BP)-lowering effect, largely attributed to repeated exposure to post-exercise hypotension (PEH). Recent evidence also indicates that aromatherapy can contribute to BP reduction, indicating that combining aromatherapy with exercise may enhance the overall BP-lowering effects. Therefore, this pilot study aimed to investigate the effects of aromatherapy on PEH during the recovery phase following exercise. Fourteen healthy young males (22.7 ± 0.7 yrs) participated in this randomized crossover-designed study. All participants completed two exercise sessions per week, each lasting 30 min, at a target heart rate (HR) of 60–65%. The individuals inhaled either aroma oil or water vapor at 5, 35, 65, and 95 min after exercise. The HR, BP, blood lactate level, and arterial stiffness index were measured before and after the exercise. Our findings revealed the following. (1) PEH occurred in both groups. (2) In the aroma group, PEH was augmented compared with the control group, with the maximum reduction in BP being greater in the aroma group. (3) The reduction in arterial stiffness was greater and longer in the aroma group than in the control group. (4) The changes in the lactate levels after exercise did not differ between the groups. Our findings indicate that aromatherapy can amplify PEH, suggesting that its use after exercise may help maximize the positive effects of exercise on BP reduction. Full article
