Study on Grinding Optimization of Cassiterite Polymetallic Sulfide Ore Based on Single-Factor Test Method

Cassiterite polymetallic sulfide ore exhibits a complex mineral composition and significant variations in mineral properties, which frequently lead to issues such as the over-grinding of cassiterite and under-grinding of sulfide minerals during the grinding process. These issues consequently impair liberation performance in subsequent beneficiation stages. Among these factors, the grinding media ratios stand as one of the critical factors influencing grinding efficiency. Based on these, the paper adopts the single-factor test method to systematically study the influence law of factors such as grinding time, mill rotational rate, and mill filling rate on the particle size composition of ore grinding products and the grinding technology efficiency under different media conditions; in addition, it is compared with the influence law of different conditions of media ratios on the grinding efficiency of ore. The results show that the optimal parameters of the grinding operation are obtained at the grinding time of 4 min, the mill rotational rate of 60%, and the filling rate of 35%. The grinding time and mill filling rate have a relatively more significant effect on the product particle size distribution, while the effect of the mill rotational rate is relatively less significant. When the parameters of grinding operations are optimal, the yield of qualified particle size and grinding technical efficiency are used as the evaluation indices, respectively. Overall, the order of the grinding effect of different media conditions was as follows: steel ball combination of Φ20 mm and Φ25 mm > steel balls of three single sizes > steel ball combination of Φ20 mm and Φ30 mm. The optimal grinding media ratios are Φ20 mm and Φ25 mm (the percentage of the Φ20 mm ball is 90%). The reasonable media ratios will effectively coordinate the optimal grinding effect between different media. The research results can provide the necessary basic data for the subsequent grinding optimization of cassiterite polymetallic sulfide ores. Full article

In order to improve the lubrication efficiency in the bearing cavity, this study establishes a simulation model of the fluid domain of the bearing cavity based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and systematically studies the flow characteristics of the lubricant and its lubrication mechanism in the high-speed rotary bearing. In the process of high-speed bearing operation, the lubricant is subject to the combined effect of centrifugal force and contact pressure, gradually spreads to both sides of the steel ball, and forms a stable oil film after injection from the nozzle. However, due to the influence of high pressure distribution in the contact area, the actual formation of the oil film coverage is relatively limited. In order to further optimize the lubrication effect, this study focuses on investigating the influence law of different injection speeds and rotational speeds on the bearing air curtain effect. The results of the study show that when the air curtain effect is enhanced, there will be significant shear interference on the trajectory of the lubricant, which is manifested in the phenomenon of “buckling” at the end of the lubricant, thus reducing the lubrication efficiency. To address this problem, this study innovatively proposes the air curtain obstruction coefficient K as a quantitative evaluation index, and through numerical simulation, it is found that the lubricant can effectively overcome the air curtain obstruction and achieve a better lubrication coverage when the value of K is reduced to below 0.4. Based on this finding, the study further confirmed that the lubrication efficiency of bearings can be significantly improved under different operating conditions by rationally regulating the injection rate. This study focuses on the optimization of valve assemblies in downhole rod pumping units (DRPUs), which remain the predominant artificial lift technology in oil production worldwide. The research addresses the critical issue of premature failures in DRPUs caused by leakage in valve pairs, i.e., a problem that accounts for approximately 15% of all failures, as identified in a statistical analysis of the 2022 operational data from the Uzen oilfield in Kazakhstan. The leakage is primarily attributed to the accumulation of mechanical impurities and paraffin deposits between the valve ball and seat, leading to concentrated surface wear and compromised sealing. To mitigate this issue, a novel valve assembly design was developed featuring a flow turbulizer positioned beneath the valve seat. The turbulizer generates controlled vortex motion in the fluid flow, which increases the rotational frequency of the valve ball during operation. This motion promotes more uniform wear across the contact surfaces and reduces the risk of localized degradation. The turbulizers were manufactured using additive FDM technology, and several design variants were tested in a full-scale laboratory setup simulating downhole conditions. Experimental results revealed that the most effective configuration was a spiral plate turbulizer with a 7.5 mm width, installed without axis deviation from the vertical, which achieved the highest ball rotation frequency and enhanced lapping effect between the ball and the seat. Subsequent field trials using valves with duralumin-based turbulizers demonstrated increased operational lifespans compared to standard valves, confirming the viability of the proposed solution. However, cases of abrasive wear were observed under conditions of high mechanical impurity concentration, indicating the need for more durable materials. To address this, the study recommends transitioning to 316 L stainless steel for turbulizer fabrication due to its superior tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Implementing this design improvement can significantly reduce maintenance intervals, improve pump reliability, and lower operating costs in mature oilfields with high water cut and solid content. The findings of this research contribute to the broader efforts in petroleum engineering to enhance the longevity and performance of artificial lift systems through targeted mechanical design improvements and material innovation. Efficient lubrication lowers friction, wear, and energy losses in automotive drivetrain components. Advanced lubricants are key to sustainable transportation performance, durability, and efficiency. This study analyzes the tribological performance of Group III base oil with CuO and ZnO nanoadditive mixtures. These additives enhance the performance of Group III base oils, making them highly relevant for automotive lubricant applications. An Optimol SRV5 tribometer performed ball-on-disk sliding contact tests with 100Cr6 steel specimens subjected to a 50 N force and a temperature of 100 °C. The test settings are designed to mimic the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes commonly seen in the automobile industry. During the tests, the effect of nanoparticles on friction was measured. Microscopic wear analysis was performed on the worn specimens. The results demonstrate that adding 0.3 wt% CuO nanoparticles to Group III base oil achieves a 19% reduction in dynamic friction and a 47% decrease in disk wear volume compared to additive-free oil. Notably, a 2:1 CuO-to-ZnO mixture produced synergy, delivering up to a 27% friction reduction and a 54% decrease in disk wear. The results show the synergistic effect of CuO and ZnO in reducing friction and wear on specimens. This study highlights the potential of nanoparticles for lubricant development and automotive applications. Full article

DEM Study on the Impact of Liner Lifter Bars on SAG Mill Collision Energy

The semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, renowned for its high efficiency, high production capacity, and low cost, is widely used for crushing and grinding equipment. However, the current understanding of the overall particle behavior influencing its efficiency remains relatively limited, particularly the impact of the shape of SAG mill liners on material behavior. This study employs discrete element method (DEM) simulation technology to investigate the effects of different liner structures on particle trajectories and collision energy, systematically investigating the impact of lifter bars angle, height, and the number of lifter bars on grinding efficiency. The results of single-factor simulations indicate that when the lifter bars height (230 mm) and the number of lifter bars (36) are fixed, the total collision energy dissipation between steel balls and ore, as well as among ore particles, reaches a maximum of 526,069.53 J when the lifter bars angle is 25°. When the lifter bar angle is fixed at 25° and the number of lifter bars is set to 36, the maximum collision energy dissipation of 627,606.06 J occurs at a lifter bars height of 210 mm. When the angle (25°) and height (210 mm) are fixed, the highest energy dissipation of 443,915.37 J is observed with 12 lifter bars. Results from the three-factor, three-level orthogonal experiment reveal that the number of lifter bars exerts the most significant influence on grinding efficiency, followed by the angle and height. The optimal combination is determined to be a 20° angle, 12 lifter bars, and a 210 mm height, resulting in the highest total collision energy dissipation of 700,334 J. This represents an increase of 379,466 J compared to the original SAG mill liner configuration (320,868 J). This research aims to accurately simulate the motion of discrete particles within the mill through DEM simulations, providing a basis for optimizing the operational parameters and structural design of SAG mills. This study investigates the development of silver (Ag)-doped zirconia (ZrO2) coatings deposited on 316LVM stainless steel via the unbalanced magnetron sputtering technique. The oxygen content in the Ar/O2 gas mixture was systematically varied (12.5%, 25%, 37.5%, and 50%) to assess its influence on the resulting coating properties. In response to the growing demand for biomedical implants with improved durability and biocompatibility, the objective was to develop coatings that enhance both wear and corrosion resistance in physiological environments. The effects of silver incorporation and oxygen concentration on the structural, tribological, and electrochemical behavior of the coatings were systematically analyzed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to identify crystalline phases, while atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize surface topography prior to wear testing. Wear resistance was evaluated using a ball-on-plane tribometer under simulated prosthetic motion, applying a 5 N load with a bone pin as the counter body. Corrosion resistance was assessed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a physiological solution. Additionally, tribocorrosive performance was investigated by coupling tribological and electrochemical tests in Ringer’s lactate solution, simulating dynamic in vivo contact conditions. The results demonstrate that Ag doping, combined with increased oxygen content in the sputtering atmosphere, significantly improves both wear and corrosion resistance. Notably, the ZrO2-Ag coating deposited with 50% O2 exhibited the lowest wear volume (0.086 mm3) and a minimum coefficient of friction (0.0043) under a 5 N load. This same coating also displayed superior electrochemical performance, with the highest charge transfer resistance (38.83 kΩ·cm2) and the lowest corrosion current density (3.32 × 10−8 A/cm2). These findings confirm the high structural integrity and outstanding tribocorrosive behavior of the coating, highlighting its potential for application in biomedical implant technology. Full article

This study investigated the effect of adding superhard ReB2 to atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) coatings based on 60 wt% Al2O3 and 40 wt% ZrO2. The amorphous phases commonly present in such coatings are known to impair their performance. ReB2 was introduced as a crystallization nucleus due to its high melting point. ReB2 decomposes in the presence of moisture and oxygen into H3BO3, ReO3, HBO2, and HReO4. ReB2 was encapsulated with Al2O3 via metallothermic synthesis to improve moisture stability, yielding a powder with d90 = 15.1 μm. After milling, it was added at 20 wt% to the Al2O3-ZrO2 feedstock. Agglomeration parameters were optimized, and coatings were deposited under varying APS conditions onto 316L steel substrates with a NiAl bond coat. In the coating with the highest ReB2 content, the identified phases included ReB2 (2.6 wt%), Re (0.8 wt%), α-Al2O3 (30.9 wt%), η-Al2O3 (32.4 wt%), and monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2. The nanohardness of the coating, measured using a Vickers indenter at 96 mN and calculated via the Oliver–Pharr method, was 9.2 ± 1.0 GPa. High abrasion resistance was obtained for the coating with a higher content of η-Al2O3 (48.7 wt%). The coefficient of friction, determined using a ball-on-disc test with a corundum ball, was 0.798 ± 0.03. After 15 months, the formation of (H3O)(ReO4) was observed, suggesting initial moisture-induced changes. The results confirm that Al2O3-encapsulated ReB2 can enhance phase stability and crystallinity in APS coatings. Full article

The control of lubricity induced by electric potential is appealing for numerous applications. On the other hand, the high polarity of ionic liquids facilitates the adsorption of equally charged molecules onto polar surfaces. This phenomenon and its consequences are well understood at the nanoscale; however, they have recently garnered significant attention at the macroscale. This study investigates the lubricity of trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dicyanamide, a phosphonium ionic liquid, when used as a neat lubricant in reciprocating sliding under electrically charged conditions. Two different polarities with the same potential were applied to the friction pair of bearing steel against bearing steel while monitoring electrical contact resistance. The lubricity was evaluated through measurements of friction, wear, surface morphology, and composition. It was found that the application of electric potential significantly alters the lubricity of the investigated ionic liquid where a positive potential applied to the ball resulted in the least damaging situation. The recorded electrical contact resistance enabled the monitoring of tribofilm formation during reciprocation. It was found that there was minimal to no separation between interacting surfaces when the ball was changing direction. Full article

The friction surfacing (FS) process has emerged over the past few years as a method for joining both similar and dissimilar materials, for volume damage repair of defective components, and for corrosion protection. The possibility to produce a metallic coating by FS, without melting the material, classifies this technique as distinct from other standard methods. This unconventional deposition method is based on the severe plastic deformation that appears on a rotating metallic rod (consumable material) pressed against the substrate under an axial load. The present study aims to investigate the tribological properties and corrosion resistance provided by the aluminum-based FS coatings deposited onto a structural S235 steel substrate and further modified by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). During the PEO treatment, the formation of a ceramic film is enabled, while the hardness, chemical stability, corrosion, and wear resistance of the modified surfaces are considerably increased. The morpho-structural characteristics and chemical composition of the PEO-modified FS coatings are further investigated using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis and X-ray diffraction. Dry sliding wear testing of the PEO-modified aluminum-based coatings was carried out using a ball-on-disc configuration, while the corrosion resistance was electrochemically evaluated in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The corrosion rates of the aluminum-based coatings decreased significantly when the PEO treatment was applied, while the wear rate was substantially reduced compared to the untreated aluminum-based coating and steel substrate, respectively. During the service life of automotive panel stamping dies, the surface is often subjected to high loads and repeated friction, resulting in excessive wear. This leads to die failure, reduced machining accuracy, and decreased production efficiency. To enhance the anti-friction and wear-resistant performance of die steel surfaces, this study introduces the concept of biomimetic engineering in surface science. By mimicking microstructural configurations found in nature with outstanding wear resistance, biomimetic functional surfaces were designed and fabricated. Specifically, quadrilateral dimples inspired by the back of dung beetles, pentagonal scales from armadillo skin, and hexagonal scales from the belly of desert vipers were selected as biological prototypes. These surface textures were fabricated on Cr12MoV die steel using high-speed ball-end milling. Finite element simulations and dry sliding wear tests were conducted to systematically investigate the tribological behavior of surfaces with different dimple geometries. The results showed that the quadrilateral dimple surface derived from the dung beetle exhibited the best performance in reducing friction and wear. Furthermore, the milling parameters for this surface were optimized using response surface methodology. After optimization, the friction coefficient was reduced by 21.3%, and the wear volume decreased by 38.6% compared to a smooth surface. This study confirms the feasibility of fabricating biomimetic functional surfaces via high-speed ball-end milling and establishes an integrated surface engineering approach combining biomimetic design, efficient manufacturing, and parameter optimization. The results provide both theoretical and methodological support for improving the service life and surface performance of large automotive panel dies. Full article

The paper shows the effect of using a lubricant in the form of an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIM-PF6), on the tribological properties of a hydrogenated diamond-like coating (DLC) doped with tungsten a-C:H:W. The coatings were deposited on 100Cr6 steel by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition PECVD. Tribological tests were carried out on a TRB3 tribometer in a rotary motion in a ball–disc combination. 100Cr6 steel balls were used as a counter-sample. Friction and wear tests were carried out for discs made of 100Cr6 steel and 100Cr6 steel discs with a DLC coating. They were performed under friction conditions with and without lubrication under 10 N and 15 N loads. The ionic liquid BMIM-PF6 was used as a lubricant. Coating thickness was observed on a scanning microscope, and the linear analysis of chemical composition on the cross-section was analyzed using the EDS analyzer. The confocal microscope with an interferometric mode was used for analysis of the geometric structure of the surface before and after the tribological tests. The contact angle of the samples for distilled water, diiodomethane and ionic liquid was tested on an optical tensiometer. The test results showed good cooperation of the DLC coating with the lubricant. It lowered the coefficient of friction in comparison to steel about 20%. This indicates the synergistic nature of the interaction: DLC coating–BMIM-PF6 lubricant–100Cr6 steel. Full article

Quasicrystalline coatings based on Al65Cu20Fe15 are of increasing interest as potential alternatives to conventional wear-resistant materials due to their unique structural and tribological properties. This study explores the influence of air pressure during high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spraying on the phase composition, morphology, and wear behavior of Al65Cu20Fe15 coatings deposited on U8G tool steel. Coatings were applied at a fixed spraying distance of 350 mm using three air pressures (1.9, 2.1, and 2.3 bar), with constant propane (2.0 bar) and oxygen (2.1 bar) supply. X-ray diffraction analysis identified the formation of Al78Cu48Fe14 and Al0.5Fe1.5 phases, while scanning electron microscopy revealed a dense, uniform microstructure with low porosity and homogeneous element distribution across all samples. Tribological testing using the ball-on-disk method showed wear track widths ranging from 853.47 to 952.50 µm, depending on the air pressure applied. These findings demonstrate that fine-tuning the air pressure during HVOF spraying significantly influences the structural characteristics and wear resistance of the resulting quasicrystalline coatings, highlighting their promise for advanced surface engineering applications. This study investigates the applicability and advantages of using additive manufacturing to moderate heat generation in dry milling. Grinding medium balls of different sizes were designed and fabricated using computer-aided design (CAD) and a stereolithographic 3D printer. Milling processes with particle size distribution and warmup measurements were employed with the printed medium balls. The results were compared with the measurements executed with conventional stainless-steel balls. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed to evaluate the effect of the warmup of the system during the milling process. A two-variable, three-level experimental design was used for the measurements. We selected two grinding parameters considered critical: speed and time. The effect of these two independent variables on heating was examined. The results show that if printed balls are applied with the same total mass as that of metal balls, the particle size reduction is increased. The greater the number of balls used, the greater the particle size reduction. In this process, where additively manufactured milling bodies were used, the temperature of the system increased by less than when stainless-steel balls were used. The use of 3D-printed medium balls demonstrated beneficial warmup behavior. Full article

This study aims to establish a methodology that integrates experimental measurements with finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the mechanical behavior and dynamic characteristics of soft–hard laminated composites fabricated via additive manufacturing (AM) under dynamic excitation. A hybrid AM technique was employed, using the PolyJet process based on stereolithography (SLA) to fabricate composite beam structures composed of alternating soft and hard materials. Initially, impact tests using a steel ball on cantilever beams made of hard material were conducted to inversely calculate the first natural frequency via time–frequency analysis, thereby identifying Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio. For the viscoelastic soft material, tensile and stress relaxation tests were performed to construct a Generalized Maxwell Model, from which the Prony series parameters were derived. Subsequently, symmetric and asymmetric multilayer composite beams were fabricated and subjected to impact testing. The experimental results were compared with FEA simulations to evaluate the accuracy and validity of the identified material parameters of different structural configurations under vibration modes. The research focuses on the time- and frequency-dependent stiffness response of the composite by hard and soft materials and integrating this behavior into structural dynamic simulations. The specific objectives of the study include (1) establishing the Prony series parameters for the soft material integrated with hard material and implementing them in the FE model, (2) validating the accuracy of resonant frequencies and dynamic responses through combined experimental and simulation, (3) analyzing the influence of composite material symmetry and thickness ratio on dynamic modals, and (4) comparing simulation results with experimental measurements to assess the reliability and accuracy of the proposed modeling framework. The Influence of Grinding Media on the Grinding Effect of Granite Pegmatite-Type Quartz

The selection of grinding media significantly impacts the resulting mineral’s liberation degree and grinding quality; this is particularly impactful for granite pegmatite-type quartz. Accordingly, in this study, we investigate the effects of different grinding media on the breakage characteristics of muscovite granite pegmatite-type quartz, focusing also on quartz mineral flotation. An analysis of scanning electron microscope images reveals distinct fracture characteristics among different minerals. Notably, the fractal dimension of mineral fracture roughness in ball-milled products is larger compared to that of rod-milled products, which exhibit a smaller fractal dimension. This fractal dimension serves as a quantitative measure of the microscopic morphology of mineral fractures in the grinding products, establishing a relationship between the roughness of the fractures and the type of grinding medium used. Further analysis of particle size distribution and mineral dissociation indicates that the rod mill produces a higher yield of coarse fractions compared to both ceramic and steel balls, while the fine fraction yield is significantly lower than that of the rod mill and steel balls. Importantly, the rod mill enhances the dissociation degree of quartz, suggesting that it can improve the liberation of mineral monomers and increase the yield of qualified fractions during the grinding process while effectively reducing the phenomenon of overgrinding. Our flotation experiments demonstrate that the recovery rate of quartz using the rod mill is 2.59% and 5.07% higher than that achieved with the ball mill and ceramic mill, respectively. These findings provide theoretical support for the optimization of grinding media and enhancement of mineral flotation recovery. Full article
