Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), formalized by Calthorpe and Poticha in 1993, emerged to counter urban sprawl, reduce car dependency, and revitalize historical community centers. Rooted in “new urbanism”, TOD emphasizes integrated regional land-use planning and high-capacity public transportation. In the Middle East, TOD implementation remains understudied, particularly regarding heritage integration and social equity in arid climates. Doha’s rapid social and economic transformation presents both opportunities and risks: growth offers urban revitalization yet threatens to displace communities and dilute cultural identity. Shifts in urban planning have aimed to address sustainability, connectivity, and heritage preservation. This study examines Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) to assess how TOD can restore historic districts while managing gentrification, enhancing accessibility and promoting inclusiveness. A mixed-methods approach was applied, including 12 semi-structured interviews with stakeholders (Qatar Rail, Msheireb Properties, Ministry of Municipality and Environment), purposive surveys of 80 urban users, site observations, and spatial mapping. Using the Node-Place-People (NPP) model, the study evaluates TOD effectiveness across transportation connectivity (node), built environment quality (place), and equity metrics (people). The findings show that MDD successfully implements fundamental TOD principles through its design, which enhances connectivity, walkability, social inclusiveness, and heritage preservation. However, multiple obstacles remain: the “peripheral island effect” limits benefits to the core, pedestrian–vehicular balance is unresolved, and commercial gentrification is on the rise. This research provides evidence-based knowledge for GCC cities pursuing sustainable urban regeneration by demonstrating both the advantages of TOD and the necessity for critical, context-sensitive implementation that focuses on social equity together with physical transformation. The concept of sustainable development has emerged as a global consensus, forged in response to environmental constraints and critical reflection on conventional growth-oriented paradigms. It now serves as the overarching framework for addressing climate, ecological, and socio-economic crises. In the period after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2016, there was an observable trend of increased integration of these objectives into the strategic frameworks of national and subnational entities. However, global assessments have indicated a divergence between the progress achieved and the trajectory delineated by the SDGs. The Earth system is demonstrating signs of decreased resilience, with widening inequalities and the emergence of multiple crises, thereby hindering the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As the 2030 deadline approaches, a fundamental question arises for global development governance: what should be the future of the SDGs beyond 2030? While insufficient progress has prompted debates over the adequacy of the SDG framework, fundamentally revising or replacing the SDGs would risk undermining a hard-won international consensus forged through decades of negotiation and institutional investment. Based on a comprehensive review of the historical evolution of the sustainable development concept, this study argues that the SDGs represent a rare and fragile achievement in global governance. While insufficient progress has sparked debates about their effectiveness, fundamentally revising or replacing the SDGs would jeopardize the hard-won international consensus forged through decades of negotiations and institutional investments. This study further analyzes the latest progress on the SDGs and identifies emerging risks, aiming to explore how to accelerate and optimize sustainable development pathways within the existing SDG framework rather than propose a new global goal system. Based on both global experience and practice in China, four interconnected strategic priorities—namely, economic reform, social equity, environmental justice, and technology sharing—are proposed as a comprehensive framework to accelerate SDG implementation and guide the transformation of development pathways towards a more just, low-carbon, and resilient future. Housing stock is observed to be associated with high carbon emissions, high fuel poverty and low comfort levels in the UK. Retrofitting the housing stock is one of the best solutions to address these problems. This paper directly corresponds with human and planetary health in terms of climate change, human health and mental health by addressing the challenges of housing retrofit at scale. Retrofitting houses can also contribute to social equity, reduced use of planetary resources and better financial and physical comfort. Despite the availability of the right technology, government grants and the potential to acquire supply chain and skilled labour, the progress of retrofit is extremely poor. Importantly, the UK is off track to achieve net zero by 2050, and the housing stock contributes 18.72% of the total emissions. The problem is further exacerbated by the 30.4 million units of housing stock. Robust strategies are required to retrofit the housing stock at scale. The study uses a qualitative modelling method under the diffusion of innovations theory to formulate a retrofit-at-scale strategy for the UK. Findings recommend focusing on skill development, show homes, research and innovation, supply chain development, business models, government grants and regulatory tools in a trajectory from 2025 to 2050. The proposed strategy is aligned with the segments of the diffusion of innovation theory. Although the analysis was performed with reference to the UK, the findings are transferable, considering the broader and urgent concerns related to human and planetary health. Full article

The accelerating low-carbon transition requires decision-support approaches capable of addressing complex, interdependent sustainability challenges across multiple sectors. While Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) techniques are gaining popularity in assessing sustainability within energy and agricultural systems, their current application remains fragmented, sector-focused, and poorly aligned with the fundamental system characteristics of uncertainty, circularity, and social equity. This Perspective employs a systematized conceptual analysis to integrate different MCDM techniques, methodological trends, and integration challenges in energy and agricultural systems. Through a literature review, this work provides a critical view of the predominant structural deficiencies, which stem from methodological isolation, the use of disparate and heterogeneous datasets, ad hoc treatment of uncertainty, and the lack of incorporation of the circular economy (CE) and equity dimensions in the analysis. Given the presence of multifunctionality, circularity, climate sensitivity, and strong social characteristics, the analysis underscores that agriculture is a prime candidate to serve as a system-level testbed for the development of integrated MCDM frameworks. Based on this analysis, the paper articulates the fundamental characteristics of next-generation MCDM frameworks that are cross-sectoral, flexible, adaptive, uncertainty-resilient, and actionable. In doing so, it prioritizes integrated approaches that combine MCDM with life cycle assessment (LCA), data analytics, and nexus modelling. This paper stresses that structural deficiencies need to be addressed for MCDM to evolve from sectoral and fragmented analytical frameworks to cohesive decision-support systems that can guide energy and agricultural systems transitions towards equity, circularity, and climate change adaptation. As a perspective, this paper does not aim to provide empirical validation but instead articulates conceptual design principles for next-generation MCDM frameworks that integrate uncertainty, circularity, and social equity across energy and agricultural systems. Universal accessibility remains a critical challenge for effective public transport and urban equity. This study addresses the need for operational prioritisation tools by proposing a robust hybrid methodology to rank interventions at urban mobility nodes. The approach combines the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for integrating expert and participatory criteria weighting with four Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) techniques (TOPSIS, VIKOR, COPRAS, and ARAS) to ensure solution reliability. Empirical validation, conducted on 30 bus stops in Segovia, Spain, confirmed the methodological soundness, evidenced by near-perfect correlations (ρ = 0.99) among the compromise and additive ratio models (TOPSIS–VIKOR and COPRAS–ARAS) and stability across over 85% of sensitivity simulations. The findings validate that the methodology effectively guides resource allocation towards interventions yielding maximum social impact and demonstrate its transferability to complex urban supply chain contexts, such as logistics microhubs. Ultimately, this replicable and adaptable model supports the transition towards more equitable, resilient urban systems, aligning directly with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Quality of life (QoL) is a multidimensional concept involving physical, psychological, social, and environmental dimensions. Therefore, it reflects not only individual well-being but also the overall well-being and sustainability of societies. Current approaches to QoL have expanded from purely economic or health-based indicators to incorporate a range of multidimensional analyses at urban, regional, and national levels, with more recent emphasis on interlinkages between socio-economic and spatial factors. This research investigates how geoinformation methodologies, including remote sensing, spatial analysis, and machine learning, can be applied to assess QoL across multiple spatial scales. Through a systematic review and comparative evaluation, the study aims to identify which indicators, data sources, and analytical tools are used at each spatial level—from neighborhood and urban scale to regional and national levels. Emphasis was placed on understanding how methodological approaches vary across scales and how spatial resolution, data availability, and urban context influence the design and implementation of QoL assessment frameworks. The main objective was to establish a common analytical framework for evaluating QoL across different spatial scales. The review revealed that combining data, machine learning algorithms, and spatial analysis approaches in a common framework will enhance comparative and predictive capabilities beyond the state of the art, although it will face significant data heterogeneity challenges. Future research aims to develop consistent, multidimensional models supportive of policies fostering sustainability and spatial equity in urban and regional contexts. Full article

Urban resilience has emerged as a critical paradigm for addressing the intertwined challenges of climate change, rapid urbanization, and social inequality, positioning green public spaces as catalysts for social, ecological, and institutional transformation. This article presents a systematic review conducted under the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, examining how collaborative and community participation influenced transformative urban resilience in green public spaces between 2021 and 2025. A total of 6179 records were initially identified across ScienceDirect and MDPI (last search: July 2025), of which 26 empirical studies met the inclusion criteria (peer-reviewed, empirical, published 2021–2025). Methodological rigor was strengthened through the application of the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT, 2018) and confidence in qualitative evidence was assessed using the GRADE-CERQual approach, enhancing transparency and reliability. Data extraction and synthesis followed a theoretical-methodological coding framework, allowing for the comparison of participatory strategies, typologies of green spaces, resilience dimensions, and applied instruments. The results show that multi-actor co-management, co-design, and community self-organization are the most frequent participatory strategies, while urban green infrastructure, pocket parks, and urban gardens constitute the predominant spatial contexts. Socio-ecological and social-participatory resilience emerged as dominant theoretical perspectives, with qualitative and mixed-methods designs prevailing across studies. Evidence synthesis through GRADE-CERQual identified seven key pathways—multi-actor co-management, Nature-based Solutions, community-based actions, social equity, cultural identity, institutional innovation, and planned densification—each contributing differently to resilience dimensions. Overall, the findings highlight that transformative resilience depends on deep, inclusive participatory processes, multi-level governance, and the integration of social, ecological, and cultural dimensions. Despite the heterogeneity of designs and unequal data adequacy, this review confirms that transformative urban resilience is a co-produced process grounded in community action, ecological sustainability, and collaborative governance. Strengthening underexplored areas—technological innovation, cultural resilience, and standardized methodological instruments—is essential for advancing comparative research and practice. Full article

This study explores the relationship between board gender diversity and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in explaining the financial performance of firms listed on the Lima Stock Exchange during 2022–2023, using 242 firm year observations for 121 firms. The research addresses a broader question on how gender representation in corporate governance and engagement in social and environmental policies influence firms’ profitability and liquidity in an emerging market context. Using a multiple linear regression model, financial performance was measured through return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), asset turnover (ATO), and the current liquidity ratio (LIQ). The results indicate that CSR is positively associated with profitability indicators (ROA, ROE, ATO), while board gender diversity shows a negative short term relationship with these variables. Both CSR and board gender diversity are negatively associated with liquidity, reflecting short term financial commitments arising from sustainability and inclusion initiatives. These findings suggest that the financial implications of diversity and CSR initiatives may vary across temporal horizons and institutional contexts. The study contributes empirical evidence from a Latin American emerging market and underscores the importance of evaluating corporate governance and sustainability practices by considering the short term financial trade-offs of diversity and CSR initiatives and their potential longer term implications. Urban sustainability depends on balancing transportation accessibility, housing affordability, and social equity. Displacement—defined in this study as the population-level loss of low-income households from a census block over time—poses a growing challenge to inclusive urban development. This study examines statistical relationships and spatial patterns linking transit accessibility, housing affordability, and low-income household displacement across the four largest counties in Tennessee. Negative binomial regression models are used to quantify relationships between transit accessibility, housing affordability, and displacement, revealing that housing affordability is consistently linked to displacement, while the effects of transit accessibility vary substantially across counties. Bivariate Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) identify localized clusters where displacement coincides with transit or housing constraints, and Multivariate Cluster Typology Analysis classifies census blocks into distinct typologies, highlighting region-specific trade-offs between accessibility and affordability. Together, the results demonstrate that displacement dynamics are highly context dependent, underscoring the need for place-based and sustainability-oriented policy responses. The findings provide an empirical basis for integrating transportation and housing strategies to reduce displacement risks and support equitable and sustainable urban development in diverse metropolitan contexts. Spatial equity of healthcare services is a critical concern in social equity and spatial justice research. Despite the availability of various methods to measure this equity, few studies have integrated the supply–demand coupling perspective with the analysis of impacts of residents’ travel behaviors’ on equity. This study develops and applies a Travel Behavior-based Coupling Coordination Degree (TB-CCD) method to assess the spatial equity of healthcare services in the Xi’an region. The results show the following: (1) Traditional single-mode models may fail to accurately assess this equity, whereas the TB-CCD model provides a more realistic evaluation. (2) Public transportation and driving provide a more equitable distribution of healthcare services compared to walking and cycling modes. The spatial equity of healthcare services exhibits a distinct core–periphery pattern, where accessibility and equity levels are significantly higher in city centers than in suburban areas. (3) The distribution of inequity ‘deserts’ and ‘oases’ in healthcare services is found to be travel-mode dependent, with the walking and public transportation modes exhibiting the highest incidence of these classifications. These findings provide valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers to formulate strategies and spatial plans aimed at enhancing equity in healthcare services. Full article

This study examines the social determinants of the digital divide in pre-service teacher education through the design and validation of the Digital Hospitality Scale (DSBD-HD-FID). The instrument was developed to diagnose social inequalities across six key dimensions: socioeconomic status, geographic location, gender, age, disability status, and interculturality. These dimensions are understood as structural factors shaping access to, use of, and participation in digital environments within teacher education. The research followed a non-experimental, quantitative, and cross-sectional design, including content validation through expert judgment and statistical analysis based on a pilot sample of education students from Chile and Portugal. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted, and internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The results confirm strong content and construct validity, as well as high reliability (α = 0.93). Empirical findings indicate that socioeconomic status and geographic location significantly condition access to connectivity and digital literacy, while gender differences emerge mainly in recreational uses and frequency of digital training. Beyond these results, the study highlights the relevance of addressing digital inequalities in teacher education through inclusive and equity-oriented training policies. The findings support the integration of digital hospitality, human rights education, and the Sustainable Development Goals into initial teacher training curricula as measurable and evaluable dimensions, providing an evidence-based framework to inform future teacher education policies aimed at reducing digital divides and promoting social cohesion. This study examines how parental legal status operates as a fundamental social determinant of health and educational equity, focusing on long-term outcomes among U.S.-born and foreign-born children of immigrants. We hypothesized that intergenerational stress and institutional exclusion associated with undocumented status would lead to lower educational attainment and poorer health. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), a nationally representative cohort, participants were classified by inferred parental legal status: native-born, documented immigrant, and undocumented immigrant. Outcomes included high school graduation, college enrollment, depression scores, and chronic health conditions. Children of undocumented parents exhibited the most adverse outcomes—lower graduation (63.8%) and college enrollment rates (39.9%), higher depression, and greater chronic illness. In models controlling for socioeconomic factors, parental undocumented status independently predicted reduced odds of college enrollment (OR = 0.61, p < 0.001) and increased odds of reporting fair/poor health (OR = 2.10, p < 0.001). Findings highlight legal precarity as a potent driver of intergenerational disadvantage and underscore the need for policies addressing the barriers faced by children in undocumented families to promote health and educational equity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems typically inherit biases from their training data, leading to discriminatory outcomes that undermine equity and inclusion. This issue is particularly significant when popular Generative AI (GAI) applications are used in educational contexts. To respond to this challenge, the study evaluates the effectiveness of dialogic reflection-based training for educators in identifying and mitigating biases in AI. Furthermore, it considers how these sessions contribute to the advancement of algorithmic justice and inclusive practices. A key component of the proposed training methodology involved equipping educators with the skills to design inclusive prompts—specific instructions or queries aimed at minimizing bias in AI outputs. This approach not only raised awareness of algorithmic inequities but also provided practical strategies for educators to actively contribute to fairer AI systems. A qualitative analysis of the course’s Moodle forum interactions was conducted with 102 university professors and graduate students from diverse regions of the Dominican Republic. Participants engaged in interactive activities, debates, and practical exercises addressing AI bias, algorithmic justice, and ethical implications. Responses were analyzed using Atlas.ti across five categories: participation quality, bias identification strategies, ethical responsibility, social impact, and equity proposals. The training methodology emphasized collaborative learning through real case analyses and the co-construction of knowledge. The study contributes a hypothesis-driven model linking dialogic reflection, bias awareness, and inclusive teaching, offering a replicable framework for ethical AI integration in higher education. Digital technologies have become increasingly crucial during and, after the COVID-19 pandemic, have sparked significant scientific interest around their impact on sustainable well-being. Despite extensive research, conclusive evidence on whether digital technologies enhance or undermine sustainable well-being remains elusive. Saudi Arabia has made significant progress in its technological infrastructure, but comprehending the implications of this progress still poses a challenge. Drawing on the prior literature and grounded in the theoretical perspective of the Capability Approach, this study proposes five dimensions of digital inclusion (accessibility, usability, digital skills, affordability, and connectivity) and examines their collective influence on students’ sustainable well-being, specifically happiness and life satisfaction. This study employs a cross-sectional design, with data collected from 238 university students in Saudi Arabia using convenience sampling. Ten hypotheses were tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS-4. This study supports the conceptualization of digital inclusion as a multidimensional construct comprising five key dimensions. The results indicate that affordability, usability, connectivity, and digital skills have a substantial impact on happiness, whereas accessibility, usability, connectivity, and digital skills have a considerable effect on life satisfaction. Nonetheless, the correlations between accessibility and happiness, as well as between affordability and life satisfaction, were not found to be supported. This implies that these dimensions might have different effects on the affective and cognitive aspects of sustainable well-being. These results suggest that digital inclusion may play a role in shaping individuals’ interactions with technology and their perceived sustainable well-being. This study proposes and evaluates a strategic framework that may guide efforts to promote digital inclusion and support sustainable well-being among university students. It provides valuable insights for policymakers, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders seeking to enhance digital access and capabilities. The findings highlight the potential value of developing strategies that address students’ digital needs as part of a holistic approach to sustainable well-being. The findings also highlight the importance of viewing digital inclusion as an interconnected framework, rather than as a set of discrete, unrelated factors. By demonstrating how digital inclusion promotes sustainable well-being, this study contributes to the broader sustainability agenda by highlighting digital equity as an essential component of socially sustainable development in the Saudi context. This paper investigates how Scottish rural schools engage with their broader educational landscape, particularly through collaborative practices and capacity-building efforts. It examines how these schools cultivate a culture of partnership, both among institutions and within their communities, to strengthen leadership and enhance teaching and learning. Guided by Place-Based Education (PBE) as its conceptual framework, the study emphasises equity challenges rooted in local contexts and situates rural education within Scotland’s historical, societal, and policy landscape. Drawing on qualitative case studies of five schools, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with principals and supported by documentary evidence and student attainment data from national assessments. The findings showcase school leaders’ efforts to enhance social and educational outcomes and build sustainable, equity-driven systems. The paper concludes with implications for policy and practice, addressing equitable access, workforce recruitment and retention, and the potential for schools to collaborate with local and regional stakeholders to strengthen rural education.
