Optimisation of the anti-skid properties of tyres is a significant area of composite applications. For investigating the wet slip friction characteristics, the wet slip friction test of tread rubber and road surface was carried out using the comprehensive tire friction testing machine. The wet slip properties of different formulated rubbers under various working conditions such as different slip speeds, water film thicknesses and vertical loads were compared through the test. Subsequently, an orthogonal test programme was designed to investigate the degree of significant influence of each factor on the wet slip performance. A three-dimensional finite element model of tread rubber and road surface with water film was established in order to facilitate analysis of the wet slip properties. The simulation results were utilised to elucidate the pattern of the effects of different loads on the wet slip friction characteristics. Results indicate that the wet slip friction coefficient is subject to decrease in proportion to the magnitude of the vertical load; the friction coefficient of rubber block in wet slip condition exhibits a decline of approximately 26% in comparison with that of dry condition; the factor that exerts the most significant influence on the coefficient of friction is the vertical load, while the water film thickness exerts the least influence. The results obtained can serve as a reference source for the design of tire anti-skid performance enhancement. Full article

Cavitation-induced degradation of metallic materials presents a significant challenge for engineers and users of equipment operating with high-velocity fluids. For any metallic material, the mechanical strength and ductility characteristics are controlled by the mobility of dislocations and their interaction with other defects in the crystal lattice (such as dissolved foreign atoms, grain boundaries, phase separation surfaces, etc.). The increase in mechanical properties, and consequently the resistance to cavitation erosion, is possible through the application of heat treatments and cold plastic deformation processes. These factors induce a series of hardening mechanisms that create structural barriers limiting the mobility of dislocations. Cavitation tests involve exposing a specimen to repeated short-duration erosion cycles, followed by mass loss measurements and surface morphology examinations using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained allow for a detailed study of the actual wear processes affecting the tested material and provide a solid foundation for understanding the degradation mechanism. The tested material is the Ni-based alloy INCONEL 625, subjected to stress-relief annealing heat treatment. Experiments were conducted using an ultrasonic vibratory device operating at a frequency of 20 kHz and an amplitude of 50 µm. Microstructural analyses showed that slip bands formed due to shock wave impacts serve as preferential sites for fatigue failure of the material. Material removal occurs along these slip bands, and microjets result in pits with sizes of several micrometers. Full article

The lower sub-member of Member 2, Dongying Formation (Paleogene) in the HHK Depression hosts an extensively developed thin-bedded beach-bar system characterized by favorable source rock conditions and reservoir properties, indicating significant hydrocarbon exploration potential. Integrating drilling cores, wireline log interpretations, three-dimensional seismic data, geochemical analyses, and palynological data, this study investigates the sedimentary characteristics, sandbody distribution patterns, controlling factors, and genetic model of this lacustrine beach-bar system. Results reveal the following: (1) widespread thin-bedded beach-bar sandbodies dominated by fine-grained sandstones and siltstones, exhibiting wave ripples and low-angle cross-bedding; (2) two vertical stacking patterns, Type A, thick mudstone intervals intercalated with laterally continuous thin sandstone layers, and Type B, composite sandstones comprising thick sandstone units overlain by thin sandstone beds, both demonstrating significant lateral continuity; (3) three identified microfacies: bar-core, beach-core, and beach-margin facies; (4) key controls on sandbody development: paleoenvironmental evolution establishing the depositional framework, secondary fluctuations modulating depositional processes, strike-slip extensional tectonics governing structural zonation, paleobathymetry variations and paleotopography controlling distribution loci, and provenance clastic influx regulating scale and enrichment (confirmed by detrital zircon U-Pb dating documenting a dual provenance system). Collectively, these findings establish a sedimentary model for a thin-bedded beach-bar system under the strike-slip extensional tectonic framework. Full article

Grain boundary weakening in high-temperature environments significantly influences the fatigue crack growth mechanisms of nickel-based superalloys, introducing challenges in accurately predicting fatigue life. In this study, a dislocation-density-based crystal plasticity phase-field (CP–PF) model is developed to simulate the fatigue crack growth behavior of the GH4169 alloy under both room and elevated temperatures. Grain boundaries are explicitly modeled, enabling the competition between transgranular and intergranular cracking to be accurately captured. The grain boundary separation energy and surface energy, calculated via molecular dynamics simulations, are employed as failure criteria for grain boundary and intragranular material points, respectively. The simulation results reveal that under oxygen-free conditions, fatigue crack propagation at both room and high temperatures is governed by sustained shear slip, with crack advancement hindered by grains exhibiting low Schmid factors. When grain boundary oxidation is introduced, increasing oxidation levels progressively degrade grain boundary strength and reduce overall fatigue resistance. Specifically, at room temperature, oxidation shortens the duration of crack arrest near grain boundaries. At elevated service temperatures, intensified grain boundary degradation facilitates a transition in crack growth mode from transgranular to intergranular, thereby accelerating crack propagation and exacerbating fatigue damage. Understanding the relationship between deformation behavior and mechanisms at elevated temperatures is of great significance for applications of high-temperature titanium alloys. This study systematically investigates the plastic deformation behavior of Ti65 alloy under both room-temperature and high-temperature conditions through in situ tensile testing, combined with slip trace analysis, crystal orientation analysis, and geometrical compatibility factor evaluation. TEM observations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that plastic deformation is predominantly accommodated by basal and prismatic slip systems with minimal pyramidal slip contribution at room temperature. However, elevated temperatures significantly promote pyramidal <a> and <c+a> slip due to thermal activation. This transition stems from a shift in deformation mechanisms: while room-temperature deformation relies on multi-slip and grain rotation to accommodate strain, high-temperature deformation is governed by efficient slip transfer across grain boundaries enabled by enhanced geometrical compatibility. Consistent with this, thermal activation at elevated temperatures reduces the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS), preferentially activating 1/3<11–23> dislocations and thereby substantially improving plastic deformation capability. These findings provide critical insights into the temperature-dependent deformation mechanisms of Ti65 alloy, offering valuable guidance for performance optimization in high-temperature applications. This study presents a robust numerical framework for evaluating the upper-bound ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations in cohesive and C-phi soils using a self-developed finite element method. The model incorporates multi-segment zero-thickness interface elements to accurately simulate soil discontinuities and progressive failure mechanisms, based on the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. In contrast to optimization-based methods such as discontinuity layout optimization (DLO) or traditional finite element limit analysis (FELA), the proposed approach uses predefined failure mechanisms to improve computational transparency and efficiency. A variety of geometric failure mechanisms are analyzed, including configurations with triangular, circular, and logarithmic spiral slip surfaces. Particular focus is given to the transition zone, which is discretized into multiple blocks to enhance accuracy and convergence. The method is developed for two-dimensional problems under the assumption of elastic deformable-plastic behavior and homogeneous isotropic soil, with limitations in automatically detecting failure mechanisms. The proposed approach is validated against classical theoretical solutions, demonstrating excellent agreement. For friction angles ranging from 0° to 40°, the computed bearing capacity factors Nc and Nq show minimal deviation from the analytical results, with errors as low as 0.04–0.19% and 0.12–2.43%, respectively. The findings confirm the method’s effectiveness in capturing complex failure behavior, providing a practical and accurate tool for geotechnical stability assessment and foundation design. As the core component for fracturing plug anchoring, dissolvable ball seat (DBS) slip performance directly determines the success of fracturing operations. However, frequent failures, such as tooth structural fractures, casing damage, and the slip breaking off entirely, compromise DBS reliability during high-pressure fracturing. This study investigates DBS slip anchoring performance through finite element analysis (FEA), anchoring performance tests, and structural optimization. We established a comprehensive safety and performance assessment framework incorporating strength criteria, peak contact pressure, and anchoring uniformity. Comparative stress analysis of nail-type versus block-type slip systems revealed superior performance in block-type configurations, demonstrating more uniform slip–casing interfacial stress distribution. To further enhance the anchoring performance of the block-type slip, a structural parameter analysis was conducted to identify critical factors influencing anchoring capability, with tooth apex angle and inclination angle determined as key parameters. The influence laws of these parameters on anchoring performance were systematically investigated. Subsequently, a multi-parameter optimization methodology was employed to optimize the structural configuration of the block-type slip. The optimization results revealed that an optimal slip tooth apex angle of 80° or 85° and an inclination angle of 70° enhance the safety and anchoring reliability of the dissolvable ball seat slip while providing a theoretical framework for future slip structure design improvements. At present, the new structure of the soluble ball seat structure proposed in this paper has been successfully applied in some oil fields. Field tests show that the anchoring efficiency has been significantly improved. This research not only provides a theoretical framework for the design of sliding structures, but also offers reliable technical support for the efficient development of deep oil and gas resources. The advent of additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has revolutionized the production of titanium alloys, offering significant advantages in fabricating complex geometries with enhanced mechanical properties. This study investigates the variant-specific deformation mechanisms in HIP-treated TA15 (Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V) titanium alloy, fabricated via selective electron beam melting (SEBM). The alloy exhibits a dual-phase (α+β) microstructure, where six distinct α variants are formed through the β→α phase transformation following the Burgers orientation relationship. Variant selection during AM leads to a non-uniform distribution of these α variants, with α6 (22.3%) dominating due to preferential growth. Analysis of the prismatic slip Schmid factor reveals that α4–α6 variants, with higher Schmid factors (>0.45), primarily undergo prismatic slip, while α1–α3 variants, with lower Schmid factors (<0.3), rely on basal or pyramidal slip and twinning for plastic deformation. In-grain misorientation axis (IGMA) analysis further reveals strain-dependent slip transitions: pyramidal slip is activated in α1–α3 variants at lower strains, while prismatic slip becomes the dominant deformation mechanism in α4–α6 variants at higher strains. Additionally, deformation twins, primarily {10–12}<1–101> extension twins (7.1%), contribute to the plasticity of hard-oriented α variants. These findings significantly enhance the understanding of the orientation-dependent deformation mechanisms in HIPed TA15 alloy and provide a crucial basis for optimizing the performance of additively-manufactured titanium alloys. Porous media have great application prospects, such as transpiration cooling for the aerospace industry. The main challenge for the prediction of gas permeability includes the geometrical complexity and high Knudsen number of gas flow at the nano-scale to micro-scale, leading to failure of the conventional Darcy’s law. To address these issues, the Quartet Structure Generation Set (QSGS) method is improved to construct anisotropic and heterogeneous three-dimensional porous media, and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) with the multiple relaxation time (MRT) collision operator is adopted. Using MRT-LBM, the pressure boundary conditions at the inlet and outlet are firstly dealt with using the moment-based boundary conditions, demonstrating good agreement with the analytical solutions in two benchmark tests of three-dimensional Poiseuille flow and flow through a body-centered cubic array of spheres. Combined with the Bosanquet-type effective viscosity model and Maxwellian diffuse reflection boundary condition, the gas flow at high Knudsen (Kn) numbers in three-dimensional porous media is simulated to study the relationship between pore-scale anisotropy, heterogeneity and Kn, and permeability and micro-scale slip effects in porous media. The slip factor is positively correlated with the anisotropic factor, which means that the high Kn effect is stronger in anisotropic structures. There is no obvious correlation between the slip factor and heterogeneity factor. Full article

Based on ascending and descending orbit SAR data from 2017–2025, this study analyzes the long time-series deformation monitoring and slip pattern of an active-layer detachment thaw slump, a typical active-layer detachment thaw slump in the permafrost zone of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, by using the small baseline subset InSAR (SBAS-InSAR) technique. In addition, a three-dimensional displacement deformation field was constructed with the help of ascending and descending orbit data fusion technology to reveal the transportation characteristics of the thaw slump. The results show that the thaw slump shows an overall trend of “south to north” movement, and that the cumulative surface deformation is mainly characterized by subsidence, with deformation ranging from −199.5 mm to 55.9 mm. The deformation shows significant spatial heterogeneity, with its magnitudes generally decreasing from the headwall area (southern part) towards the depositional toe (northern part). In addition, the multifactorial driving mechanism of the thaw slump was further explored by combining geological investigation and geotechnical tests. The analysis reveals that the thaw slump’s evolution is primarily driven by temperature, with precipitation acting as a conditional co-factor, its influence being modulated by the slump’s developmental stage and local soil properties. The active layer thickness constitutes the basic geological condition of instability, and its spatial heterogeneity contributes to differential settlement patterns. Freeze–thaw cycles affect the shear strength of soils in the permafrost zone through multiple pathways, and thus trigger the occurrence of thaw slumps. Unlike single sudden landslides in non-permafrost zones, thaw slump is a continuous development process that occurs until the ice content is obviously reduced or disappears in the lower part. This study systematically elucidates the spatiotemporal deformation patterns and driving mechanisms of an active-layer detachment thaw slump by integrating multi-temporal InSAR remote sensing with geological and geotechnical data, offering valuable insights for understanding and monitoring thaw-induced hazards in permafrost regions. A New Look at the Stress State Across the Bohai Strait, China

The Bohai Strait is a special tectonic region in North China, characterized by strong fault activity and frequent seismic events. In this study, we analyzed the stress state across the Bohai Strait in detail by integrating the stress data derived from the hydraulic fracturing measurements in four boreholes along the strait (i.e., Pingdu, Xiangli, Changdao, and Gaizhou from south to north) and evaluated its implications for seismicity. The results reveal that the gradient coefficients of the maximum (SH) and minimum horizontal stresses (Sh) with depth in Xiangli and Changdao are over 1.59 and 1.87 times the corresponding stresses of the North China Block. However, the SH and Sh in Pingdu and Gaizhou do not exceed 50.2% and 59.4% of those of the North China Block. The stress values increase as the distance approaches the interaction of the regional faults in the Bohai Strait. The SH orientation in the Bohai Strait region is N68.67 ± 9.30° E, consistent with the prevailing NEE–E-W regional stress direction. According to the Coulomb friction failure criterion, the friction coefficients of the four boreholes range from 0.24 to 0.52, lower than the theoretically critical limit for inducing fault slip in the upper crust (i.e., Byerlee’s law). The faults in the strait region are considered to be contemporarily stable but need to be further evaluated, considering more influencing factors. This study provides a new, instructive understanding of the variations in the stress state in the Bohai Strait region. Full article

In this context, this study investigates a cement-less material, specifically an alkali-activated or geopolymer concrete (GPC), which presents potential environmental benefits. The material has been characterized with respect to both its fresh and hardened properties, providing groundwork for future structural applications. A key focus of the research is the bond behavior between GPC and reinforcing bars, including both steel and non-metallic fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. The use of non-metallic bars is particularly relevant as they offer the potential to enhance the durability of structures by mitigating issues such as corrosion. Current research lacks comprehensive studies on factors affecting stress transfer at the GPC-reinforcing bar interface, such as bar diameter, bond length, and surface finish. This study aims to expand knowledge on the bond between GPC and steel/FRP rebars through experimental and analytical approaches. The tests, which included different bar types and bond lengths, showed that GPC exhibited similar bond behavior with steel and ribbed glass FRP bars in terms of bond strength and stress-slip curves. The results indicate that GPC exhibits comparable bond strength and stress-slip behavior when reinforced with either steel or ribbed glass FRP bars. Full article

Pre-tensioned concrete T-beams with draped strands have been gradually promoted and used in bridge construction in recent years due to their advantages such as simple structure, efficient force distribution, and few defects. However, the current design codes exhibit conservative provisions for the calculation of the shear capacity of such beams under a small shear span ratio, which may lead to a large design value of beam web thickness. This is primarily due to insufficient experimental data. This paper details a full-scale experimental investigation on the shear failure mechanisms of two 30 m pre-tensioned concrete T-beams with draped strands, under a shear span ratio of 1, at which the shear capacity of the beams represents their upper limit. The specimens were tested to analyze their mechanical behavior, including load-deflection response, crack distribution, stirrup strain, and strand slip. The ultimate shear capacities of the test beams were 7107 kN and 6742 kN. To evaluate the applicability of current design codes, the experimental results were compared with theoretical predictions from five international design codes. The analysis revealed that the AASHTO code provided the highest upper limit of shear capacity for pre-tensioned concrete T-beams with draped strands, whereas the Chinese code (JTG 3362-2018) exhibited a significantly high safety factor of 4.09. These findings provide a basis for the optimized design of pre-tensioned concrete T-beams with draped strands and the determination of the upper limit of shear capacity. Full article

This study investigates the environmental and operational performance of X-DF and ME-GI propulsion systems in large LNG carriers, focusing on key emission and transport efficiency metrics—CO2, the EEOI, and the CII—and their relationship with operational factors such as shaft power, vessel speed, propeller slip, and specific fuel oil consumption. Statistical methods including correlation analysis, regression modeling, outlier detection, and clustering are employed to evaluate engine behavior across the ship’s fuel gas steaming envelope and to identify critical efficiency trends. The results show that ME-GI engines deliver lower CO2 emissions and consistent efficiency under steady-load conditions, due to their higher thermal efficiency and precise control characteristics. In contrast, X-DF engines demonstrate greater adaptability, leveraging LNG combustion to achieve cleaner emissions and optimal performance in specific operational clusters. Clustering analysis highlights distinct patterns: ME-GI engines excel with optimized shaft power and RPM, while X-DF engines achieve peak efficiency through adaptive load and fuel management. These findings provide actionable insights for integrating performance indicators into SEEMP strategies, enabling targeted emission reductions and fuel optimization across diverse operating scenarios—thus supporting more sustainable maritime transport. Introduction: Robotic-assisted (RA) spine surgery enhances pedicle screw placement accuracy through real-time navigation and trajectory guidance. However, the absence of traditional direct haptic feedback by freehand instrumentation remains a concern for some, particularly in minimally invasive (MIS) procedures where direct visual confirmation is limited. During RA spine surgery, navigation systems display three-dimensional data, but factors such as registration errors, intraoperative motion, and anatomical variability may compromise accuracy. This technical note describes a visuohaptic intraoperative phenomenon observed during RA spine surgery, its underlying mechanical principles, and its utility. During pedicle screw insertion with a slow-speed automated drill in RA spine procedures, a subtle and rhythmic variation in resistance has been observed both visually on the navigation interface and haptically through the handheld drill. This intraoperative pattern is referred to in this report as a cyclical insertional torque (CIT) pattern and has been noted across multiple cases. The CIT pattern is hypothesized to result from localized stick–slip dynamics, where alternating phases of resistance and release at the bone–screw interface generate periodic torque fluctuations. The pattern is most pronounced at low insertion speeds and diminishes with increasing drill velocity. CIT is a newly described intraoperative observation that may provide visuohaptic feedback during pedicle screw insertion in RA spine surgery. Through slow-speed automated drilling, CIT offers a cue for bone engagement, which could support intraoperative awareness in scenarios where tactile feedback is reduced or visual confirmation is indirect. While CIT may enhance surgeon confidence during screw advancement, its clinical relevance, reproducibility, and impact on placement accuracy have yet to be validated. Full article
