The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is limited by the slow kinetic process and high reaction energy barrier, significantly restricting the commercial application of DMFCs. Therefore, developing MOR catalysts with high activity and stability is very important. In this paper, oxygen-functionalised activated carbon (FAC) with controllable oxygen-containing functional groups was prepared by adjusting the volume ratio of H2SO3/HNO3 mixed acid, and Pd/AC and Pd/FAC catalysts were synthesised via the hydrazine hydrate reduction method. A series of characterisation techniques and electrochemical performance tests were used to study the catalyst. The results showed that when V(H2SO3):V(HNO3) = 2:3, more defects were generated on the surface of the AC, and more oxygen-containing functional groups represented by C=O and C–OH were attached to the surface of the support, which increased the anchor sites of Pd and improved the dispersion of Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) on the support. At the same time, the mass–specific activity of Pd/FAC for MOR was 2320 mA·mgPd, which is 1.5 times that of Pd/AC, and the stability was also improved to a certain extent. In situ infrared spectroscopy further confirmed that oxygen functionalisation treatment promoted the formation and transformation of *COOH intermediates, accelerated the transformation of COL into COB, reduced the poisoning of COads species adsorbed to the catalyst, optimised the reaction path and improved the catalytic kinetic performance. Background/Objectives: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition that significantly impacts quality of life. Research has focused largely on older women, while experiences of younger women remain relatively underexplored despite challenges unique to this population. Informed by the biopsychosocial model of illness, this study aims to assess the symptom burden, treatment goals, and information needs of younger women complaining of prolapse by analyzing questionnaire responses from an existing electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire—Pelvic Floor (ePAQ-PF) dataset. Methods: Mixed-methods content analysis was conducted using free-text data from an anonymized multi-site ePAQ-PF dataset of 5717 responses collected across eight UK NHS trusts (2018–2022). A quantitative, deductive approach was first used to identify younger women (≤50 years old) with self-reported prolapse. ePAQ-PF scores for younger women with prolapse were compared with those aged >50 years, using Mann–Whitney tests. Free-text response data were analyzed inductively to qualitatively explore younger women’s symptom burden, treatment goals, and information needs. Results: Of the 1473 women with prolapse identified, 399 were aged ≤50 years. ePAQ-PF scores of the younger cohort demonstrated significantly greater symptom severity and bother than those aged >50, particularly in bowel, prolapse, vaginal, body image, and sexual health domains (p < adjusted threshold). Qualitative analysis undertaken to understand women’s concerns and priorities produced five health-related themes (physical health; functionality; psychosocial and emotional wellbeing; reproductive and sexual health; and healthcare journeys) and a sixth intersecting theme representing information needs. Conclusions: The findings highlight the substantial symptom burden of younger women with prolapse, as well as treatment goals and information needs specific to this population. The development of age-specific resources is identified as a requirement to support this group. Full article

A wide-bandgap AgInGaSe2 (AIGS) thin film was fabricated using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) via a three-stage method. The influence of Selenium (Se) pressure on the properties of AIGS films and solar cells was studied in detail. It was found that Se pressure played a very important role during the fabrication process, whereby Se pressure was varied from 0.8 × 10−3 Torr to 2.5 × 10−3 Torr in order to specify the effect of Se pressure. A two-stage mechanism during the production of AIGS solar cells was concluded according to the experimental results. With an increase in Se pressure, the grain size significantly increased due to the supply of the Ag–Se phase; the superficial roughness also increased. When Se pressure was increased to 2.1 × 10−3 Torr, the morphology of AIGS changed abruptly and clear grain boundaries were observed with a typical grain size of over 1.5 μm. AIGS films fabricated with a low Se pressure tended to show a higher bandgap due to the formation of anti-site defects such as In and Ga on Ag sites as a result of the insufficient Ag–Se phase. With an increase in Se pressure, the crystallinity of the AIGS film changed from the (220)-orientation to the (112)-orientation. When Se pressure was 2.1 × 10−3 Torr, the AIGS solar cell demonstrated its best performance of about 9.6% (Voc: 810.2 mV; Jsc: 16.7 mA/cm2; FF: 71.1%) with an area of 0.2 cm2. Full article

As a type of distinctive pit on Mars, skylights are entrances to subsurface lava caves. They are very important for studying volcanic activity and potential preserved water ice, and are also considered as potential sites for human extraterrestrial bases in the future. Most skylights are manually identified, which has low efficiency and is highly subjective. Although deep learning methods have recently been used to identify skylights, they face challenges of few effective samples and low identification accuracy. In this article, 151 positive samples and 920 negative samples based on the MRO-HiRISE image data was used to create an initial skylight dataset, which contained few positive samples. To augment the initial dataset, StyleGAN2-ADA was selected to synthesize some positive samples and generated an augmented dataset with 896 samples. On the basis of the augmented skylight dataset, we proposed YOLOv9-Skylight for skylight identification by incorporating Inner-EIoU loss and DySample to enhance localization accuracy and feature extracting ability. Compared with YOLOv9, the P, R, and the F1 of YOLOv9-Skylight were improved by about 9.1%, 2.8%, and 5.6%, respectively. Compared with other mainstream models such as YOLOv5, YOLOv10, Faster R-CNN, Mask R-CNN, and DETR, YOLOv9-Skylight achieved the highest accuracy (F1 = 92.5%), which shows a strong performance in skylight identification. Many bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, have encoded many toxins like RhsP2 that target non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in a similar mechanism to ART components; bacterial RNA loses its function of amino acid translation. A virtual screening approach was used to investigate RhsP2, which targets 16s rRNAs and then disrupts the translation of bacterial amino acids to proteins. Rifamycin is the bioreference as it forms a stable complex with the bacterial RNA in its active sites. Using different docking software can determine the best predicted conformations between RhsP2/16S and rRNA, and analyzing the docking score for both Affinity Binding and the root mean square deviation (RMSD) of particle coordinates helps choose the most appropriate drugs by using tools such as bioinformatics platforms and databases. In the context of increasing concern over long-term environmental impacts of closed landfill sites, this study investigates the composition of groundwater and leachate at a municipal waste landfill in southwestern Poland, two decades after its closure. The research, conducted in 2023, aimed to assess groundwater quality using 11 physico-chemical and 13 microplastic indicators. Groundwater and leachate samples were collected seasonally to assess of groundwater quality around landfill, including presence of heavy metals (Cd, Cr6+, Cu, Pb), PAHs and TOC, and microplastics. The results revealed persistent environmental degradation, with elevated concentrations of total organic carbon (24.8 mg/L) and cadmium (0.0211 mg/L), particularly in the second half of the year. Additionally, PET microplastics were detected in correlation with increased precipitation and leachate generation. These findings indicate that pollutants continue to migrate from the waste deposit into the surrounding groundwater, with seasonal patterns amplifying their presence. The study confirms that even decades after closure, municipal landfills can remain significant sources of both chemical and microplastic contamination, underlining the need for long-term monitoring and remediation strategies to protect groundwater resources. The work presents the design of an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) system with a nominal capacity of 16 kW, proposed as a contribution to reducing the energy gap in Ecuador, where electricity demand surpasses supply. The province of Santa Elena was selected as a promising site due to its favorable wave conditions and coastal location. The design process involved identifying areas with high wave energy potential, conducting a brief mathematical modeling analysis, and defining the parameters required for the system. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were carried out in two stages: In the first stage, OpenFOAM was used to evaluate wave behavior, specifically flow velocity and pressure, before the water enters the generation chamber. In the second stage, a different CFD tool was used, incorporating the output data from OpenFOAM to simulate the energy conversion process inside the Wells turbine. This analysis focused on how the turbine captures and transforms the wave energy into usable power. The results show that, under ideal conditions, the system achieves an average power output of 11 kW. These findings suggest that implementing this type of system in coastal regions of Ecuador is both viable and beneficial for local energy development. Full article

Most patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) present with advanced/metastatic disease at diagnosis, and molecular profiling is critical in guiding treatment decisions. This retrospective cohort study aimed to characterize EGFR mutations (EGFRm) in advanced/metastatic NSCLC patients, treatment patterns, and real-world outcomes. Adults diagnosed between 2018 and 2021 and treated at a Comprehensive Care Center were included. Time-to-event outcomes were analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method. A total of 110 patients were included, with a median age of 69.0 years (range, 37–93), 76.4% female, and 83.2% non-smokers. About 97.3% had adenocarcinomas, with 93.6% at stage IV, 40.9% with ≥ three metastatic sites (brain metastases in 24.5%), 33.6% ECOG 2–4, and 58.2% with an EGFR exon-19 deletion. A minority started supportive care or curative-intent treatment, and 81.8% underwent first-line palliative systemic therapy (TKIs, 91.1%; chemotherapy, 8.9%). Median real-world overall survival (rwOS) was 18.9 months (95% CI, 13.8–28.1). Worse rwOS was observed in patients with ECOG 2–4 versus ECOG 0–1 (10.3 vs. 22.8 months; HR 1.82, 95% CI 1.17–2.85; p = 0.008) and in patients with exon-21 L858R versus exon 19 deletions (15.8 vs. 24.2 months; HR 1.59, 95% CI 1.00–2.54; p = 0.048). In patients treated with palliative systemic treatment, median progression-free survival was 10.9 months (95% CI, 8.8–13.6). This study provides important insights regarding real-world characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes from a cohort of EGFRm advanced/metastatic NSCLC patients. Full article

The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Digital Twin (DT) technologies offers new opportunities for enhancing reinforcement design and on-site constructability. This study addresses a current gap in DT applications by introducing an intelligent framework that simultaneously automates rebar layout generation and reduces rebar cutting waste (RCW), two challenges often overlooked during the construction execution phase. The system employs heuristic algorithms to generate constructability-aware rebar configurations and leverages Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) schema-based data models for interoperability. The framework is implemented using Autodesk Revit and Dynamo for rebar modeling and layout generation, Microsoft Project for schedule integration, and Autodesk Navisworks for clash detection. Real-time scheduling synchronization is achieved through IFC schema-based BIM models linked to construction timelines, while embedded clash detection and constructability feedback loops allow for iterative refinement and improved installation feasibility. A case study on a high-rise commercial building demonstrates substantial material savings, improved constructability, and reduced layout time, validating the practical advantages of BIM–DT integration for RC construction. Background: Electronic waste (e-waste) recycling in informal settings like Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana, releases toxic metals into the environment, posing serious health risks to nearby residents, particularly children. This study assessed the body burdens of lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and arsenic (As) and their association with cognitive function in schoolchildren living within 1 km of the Agbogbloshie site. Method: A cross-sectional study involving 56 pupils collected demographic data and blood and urine samples and administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). Blood was tested for Pb and Mn and urine for Cd, Cr, Ni, and As. Associations between metal levels and cognitive outcomes were examined using regression analyses, adjusting for confounders. Result: Children showed elevated metal levels, with mean blood Pb of 60.43 µg/L and urinary s of 21.50 µg/L. Symptoms of cognitive dysfunction were common: 75% reported confusion, 67.9% poor memory, and 66% poor concentration. Urinary Cr levels were significantly associated with lower Full-Scale IQ (β = −18.42, p < 0.05) and increased difficulty in decision-making (OR = 0.1, p < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings underscore the neurodevelopmental risks of heavy metal exposure from e-waste in low- and middle-income countries and call for urgent public health interventions and policy actions. This study investigates hearing outcomes of stapedotomy using two different types of prostheses: manually crimped MatriX and thermally activated NiTiBOND. The primary objective was to determine whether the method of prosthesis fixation to the long process of incus influences postoperative results. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 155 patients with otosclerosis; 90 received the NiTiBOND prosthesis and 65 received the MatriX prosthesis. Choice of prosthesis was determined intraoperatively based on position of chorda tympani. If the nerve was located near the incus and the prosthesis fixation site, the surgeon opted for MatriX prosthesis to avoid potential injury from activation of the NiTiBOND. Audiometric evaluations revealed no statistically significant differences in bone conduction thresholds on the first postoperative day (p = 0.275) or at six weeks (p = 0.899), postoperative air-bone gap (p = 0.810), air-bone gap closure (p = 0.489), overclosure (p = 0.436), or bone conduction at 4 kHz (p = 0.324). Chorda tympani nerve injury occurred in 9.2% of cases with MatriX prosthesis and 6.7% with NiTiBOND prosthesis (p = 0.556). Our findings highlight the theoretical and practical significance of comparing both prostheses, demonstrating that NiTiBOND can serve as an alternative in anatomically favorable cases, thereby guiding treatment choices. Scavenging domestic ducks significantly contribute to the transmission and maintenance of highly pathogenic H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b avian influenza viruses in Bangladesh, a strain of growing global concern due to its broad host range, high pathogenicity, and spillover potential. This study investigates the molecular epidemiology and pathology of HPAI H5N1 viruses in unvaccinated scavenging ducks in Bangladesh, with the goal of assessing viral evolution and associated disease outcomes. Between June 2022 and March 2024, 40 scavenging duck flocks were investigated for HPAI outbreaks. Active HPAIV H5N1 infection was detected in 35% (14/40) of the flocks using RT-qPCR. Affected ducks exhibited clinical signs of incoordination, torticollis, and paralysis. Pathological examination revealed prominent meningoencephalitis, encephalopathy and encephalomalacia, along with widespread lesions in the trachea, lungs, liver, and spleen, indicative of systemic HPAIV infection. A phylogenetic analysis of full-genome sequences confirmed the continued circulation of clade 2.3.2.1a genotype G2 in these ducks. Notably, two samples of 2022 and 2023 harbored HPAIV H5N1 of clade 2.3.4.4b, showing genetic similarity to H5N1 strains circulating in Korea and Vietnam. A mutation analysis of the HA protein in clade 2.3.4.4b viruses revealed key substitutions, including T156A (loss of an N-linked glycosylation site), S141P (antigenic site A), and E193R/K (receptor-binding pocket), indicating potential antigenic drift and receptor-binding adaptation compared to clade 2.3.2.1a. The emergence of clade 2.3.4.4b with the first report of neurological and systemic lesions suggests ongoing viral evolution with increased pathogenic potential for ducks. These findings highlight the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and biosecurity to control HPAI spread in Bangladesh. Full article

This study provides user-centered insights into how inclusive forest design can support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of older adults. It operationalizes universal design principles in natural settings and confirms their relevance through empirical evidence. With the acceleration of global population aging, adapting forest recreation environments to meet the specific needs of older adults is increasingly urgent. This study investigates how infrastructure influences both participation and emotional well-being among older visitors to forest recreation areas. Data were collected from 446 participants aged 65 and older, using a structured survey distributed through in-person contact and digital snowball sampling. Participants reported their infrastructure preferences and their emotional responses related to forest visits. The findings show that older adults highly value site cleanliness, shaded seating, accessible restrooms, and clear signage. Expectations varied significantly according to health status, age group, and visitation frequency. Emotional well-being was positively associated with both comfort and visit frequency. These results demonstrate how inclusive infrastructure plays a vital role in supporting older adults’ access to and enjoyment of forest environments. The study affirms that universally designed forests not only reduce barriers but also promote psychological health and active aging, contributing to developing more equitable and sustainable nature-based recreation areas. Epigenomic Interactions Between Chronic Pain and Recurrent Pressure Injuries After Spinal Cord Injury

Background/Objectives: This study investigated variations in DNA methylation patterns associated with chronic pain and propensity for recurrent pressure injuries (PrI) in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: Whole blood was collected from 81 individuals with SCI. DNA methylation was quantified using Illumina genome-wide arrays (EPIC and EPICv2). Comprehensive clinical profiles collected included secondary health complications, in particular current PrI and chronic pain. Relationships between recurrent PrI and chronic pain and whether the co-occurrence of both traits was mediated by changes in DNA methylation were investigated using R packages limma, DMRcate and mCSEA. Results: Three differentially methylated positions (DMPs) (cg09867095, cg26559694, cg24890286) and one region in the micro-imprinted locus for BLCAP/NNAT are associated with chronic pain in persons with SCI. The study cohort was stratified by PrI status to identify any sites associated with chronic pain and while the same three sites and region were replicated in the group with no recurrent PrI, two novel, hypermethylated (cg21756558, cg26217441) sites and one region in the protein-coding gene FDFT1 were identified in the group with recurrent PrI. Gene enrichment and genes associated with specific promoters using MetaScape identified several shared disorders and ontology terms between independent phenotypes of pain and recurrent PrI and interactive sub-groups. Conclusions: DMR analysis using mCSEA identified several shared genes, promoter-associated regions and CGI associated with overall pain and PrI history, as well as sub-groups based on recurrent PrI history. These findings suggest that a much larger gene regulatory network is associated with each phenotype. These findings require further validation. Full article

This study analyzes 209 dog skeletons from two sites in Wolin (9th–mid-13th century AD) using 100 standard metric variables covering cranial, mandibular, and postcranial elements. Estimated withers height, body mass, age at death, and sex were derived using established methods. The results indicate the presence of at least two to three morphotypes: small spitz-like dogs (40–50 cm, 4–6 kg), medium brachycephalic forms (50–60 cm, 10–15 kg), and larger mesocephalic individuals (up to 65 cm, 20–40 kg). Dogs lived 3–10 years, with both sexes represented. Signs of cranial trauma and dental wear suggest utilitarian roles such as guarding. The size range and morphological diversity point to intentional breeding and trade-based importation. Small dogs likely served as companions or city guards, while medium and large types were used for herding, hunting, or transport. These findings highlight Wolin’s role as a dynamic cultural and trade center, where human–dog relationships were shaped by anthropogenic selection and regional exchange. Full article
