This study proposes an intelligent patrol planning framework that leverages reinforcement learning, spatiotemporal crime forecasting, and simulated sensor telemetry to optimize autonomous vehicle (AV) navigation in urban environments. Crime incidents from Washington DC (2024–2025) and Seattle (2008–2024) are modeled as a dynamic spatiotemporal graph, capturing the evolving intensity and distribution of criminal activity across neighborhoods and time windows. The agent’s state space incorporates synthetic AV sensor inputs—including fuel level, visual anomaly detection, and threat signals—to reflect real-world operational constraints. We evaluate and compare three learning strategies: Deep Q-Network (DQN), Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN), and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). Experimental results show that DDQN outperforms DQN in convergence speed and reward accumulation, while PPO demonstrates greater adaptability in sensor-rich, high-noise conditions. Real-map simulations and hourly risk heatmaps validate the effectiveness of our approach, highlighting its potential to inform scalable, data-driven patrol strategies in next-generation smart cities. Virtual power plants (VPPs) coordinate distributed energy resources (DERs) to collectively meet grid dispatch instructions. When a dispatch command is issued to a VPP, it must be disaggregated optimally among the individual DERs to minimize overall operational costs. However, existing methods for VPP dispatch instruction disaggregation often require solving complex optimization problems for each instruction, posing challenges for real-time applications. To address this issue, we propose a multi-parametric programming-based method that yields an explicit mapping from any given dispatch instruction to an optimal DER-level deployment strategy. In our approach, a parametric optimization model is formulated to minimize the dispatch cost subject to DER operational constraints. By applying Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions and recursively partitioning the DERs’ adjustable capacity space into critical regions, we derive analytical expressions that directly map dispatch instructions to their corresponding resource allocation strategies and optimal scheduling costs. This explicit solution eliminates the need to repeatedly solve the optimization problem for each new instruction, enabling fast real-time dispatch decisions. Case study results verify that the proposed method effectively achieves the cost-efficient and computationally efficient disaggregation of dispatch signals in a VPP, thereby improving its operational performance. Fish coloration plays an important role in reproduction and camouflage, yet capturing color variation under field conditions remains challenging. We present a standardized, semi-automated protocol for measuring body coloration in the popular model fish threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Individuals are photographed in a controlled light box within minutes of capture, and color is sampled from eight anatomically defined standard sites in human-perception-based CIELAB space. Analyses combine univariate color metrics, multivariate statistics, and the ΔE* perceptual difference index to detect subtle shifts in hue and brightness. Validation on pre-spawning fish shows the method reliably distinguishes males and females well before full breeding colors develop. Although it currently omits ultraviolet signals and fine-scale patterning, the approach scales efficiently to large sample sizes and varying lighting conditions, making it well suited for population-level surveys of camouflage dynamics, sexual dimorphism, and environmental influences on coloration in sticklebacks. Mud pulse telemetry (MPT) systems are a promising approach to transmitting downhole data to the ground. During transmission, the amplitudes of pressure waves decay exponentially with distance, and the channel is often frequency-selective due to reflection and multipath effect. To address these issues, this work proposes a fractional Fourier transform (FrFT)-based channel estimation and equalization method. Leveraging the energy aggregation of linear frequency-modulated signals in the fractional Fourier domain, the time delay and attenuation parameters of the multipath channel can be estimated accurately. Furthermore, a fractional Fourier domain equalizer is proposed to pre-filter the frequency-selective fading channel using fractionally spaced decision feedback equalization. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated through a simulation analysis and field experiments. The simulation results demonstrate that this method can significantly reduce multipath effects, effectively control the impact of noise, and facilitate subsequent demodulation. The field experiment results indicate that the demodulation of real data achieves advanced data rate communication (over 12 bit/s) and a low bit error rate (below 0.5%), which meets engineering requirements in a 3000 m drilling system. Subsea pipelines, operating in high-pressure and high-salinity conditions, face ongoing risks of leakage. Pipeline leaks can pollute the marine environment and, in severe cases, cause safety incidents, endangering human lives and property. Regular integrity inspections of subsea pipelines are critical to prevent corrosion-related leaks. This study develops a magnetic flux leakage (MFL)-based pig for detecting corrosion in subsea pipelines. Using a three-dimensional finite element model, this study analyzes the effects of defect geometry, lift-off distance, and operating speed on MFL signals. It proposes a defect estimation method based on axial peak-to-valley values and radial peak spacing, with inversion accuracy validated against simulation results. This study establishes a theoretical and practical framework for subsea pipeline integrity management, providing an effective solution for corrosion monitoring. Full article

Video temporal grounding (VTG) aims to localize a semantically relevant temporal segment within an untrimmed video based on a natural language query. The task continues to face challenges arising from cross-modal semantic misalignment, which is largely attributed to redundant visual content in sensor-acquired video streams, linguistic ambiguity, and discrepancies in modality-specific representations. Most existing approaches rely on intra-modal feature modeling, processing video and text independently throughout the representation learning stage. However, this isolation undermines semantic alignment by neglecting the potential of cross-modal interactions. In practice, a natural language query typically corresponds to spatiotemporal content in video signals collected through camera-based sensing systems, encompassing a particular sequence of frames and its associated salient subregions. We propose a text-guided visual representation optimization framework tailored to enhance semantic interpretation over video signals captured by visual sensors. This framework leverages textual information to focus on spatiotemporal video content, thereby narrowing the cross-modal gap. Built upon the unified cross-modal embedding space provided by CLIP, our model leverages video data from sensing devices to structure representations and introduces two dedicated modules to semantically refine visual representations across spatial and temporal dimensions. First, we design a Spatial Visual Representation Optimization (SVRO) module to learn spatial information within intra-frames. It selects salient patches related to the text, capturing more fine-grained visual details. Second, we introduce a Temporal Visual Representation Optimization (TVRO) module to learn temporal relations from inter-frames. Temporal triplet loss is employed in TVRO to enhance attention on text-relevant frames and capture clip semantics. Additionally, a self-supervised contrastive loss is introduced at the clip–text level to improve inter-clip discrimination by maximizing semantic variance during training. Experiments on Charades-STA, ActivityNet Captions, and TACoS, widely used benchmark datasets, demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods across multiple metrics. Full article

Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) present a significant reliability challenge in electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains, particularly under non-stationary operating conditions characterized by inverter-driven transients, variable loads, and magnetic saturation. Existing diagnostic approaches, including motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and wavelet-based methods, are primarily designed for steady-state conditions and rely on manual feature selection, limiting their applicability in real-time embedded systems. Furthermore, the lack of publicly available, high-fidelity datasets capturing the transient dynamics and nonlinear flux-linkage behaviors of PMSMs under fault conditions poses an additional barrier to developing data-driven diagnostic solutions. To address these challenges, this study introduces a simulation framework that generates a comprehensive dataset using finite element method (FEM) models, incorporating magnetic saturation effects and inverter-driven transients across diverse EV operating scenarios. Time-frequency features extracted via Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) from stator current signals are used to train a Transformer model for automated ITSC fault detection. The Transformer model, leveraging self-attention mechanisms, captures both local transient patterns and long-range dependencies within the time-frequency feature space. This architecture operates without sequential processing, in contrast to recurrent models such as LSTM or RNN models, enabling efficient inference with a relatively low parameter count, which is advantageous for embedded applications. The proposed model achieves 97% validation accuracy on simulated data, demonstrating its potential for real-time PMSM fault detection. Additionally, the provided dataset and methodology contribute to the facilitation of reproducible research in ITSC diagnostics under realistic EV operating conditions. Full article

This paper presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of a dual-Circularly Polarized (CP) array antenna to be used as single element for a bistatic radar system, aimed at detecting and tracking objects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The antenna operates at 412 MHz in reception mode and consists of an array of 19 slotted-patch radiating elements with a cavity-based metallic superstrate, designed to support dual circular polarization. These elements are arranged in a hexagonal configuration, enabling the array structure to achieve a maximum realized gain of 17 dBi and a Side Lobe Level (SLL) below −17 dB while maintaining high polarization purity. Two identical analog feeding networks enable the precise control of phase and amplitude, allowing the independent reception of Right-Hand and Left-Hand Circularly Polarized (RHCP and LHCP) signals. Full-wave simulations and experimental measurements confirm the high performance and robustness of the system, demonstrating its suitability for integration into large-scale Space Situational Awareness (SSA) sensor networks. Composite laminates are widely used in aerospace, automotive, construction, and luxury industries, owing to their superior mechanical properties and design flexibility. However, detecting manufacturing defects and in-service damage remains a vital challenge for structural safety. While traditional unsupervised machine learning methods have been used in structural health monitoring (SHM), their high false positive rates limit their reliability in real-world applications. This issue is mostly inherited from their limited ability to capture small temporal variations in Lamb wave signals and their dependence on shallow architectures that suffer with complex signal distributions, causing the misclassification of damaged signals as healthy data. To address this, we suggested an unsupervised anomaly detection framework that integrates a self-attention autoencoder with a Gaussian mixture model (SAE-GMM). The model is solely trained on healthy Lamb wave signals, including high-quality synthetic data generated via a generative adversarial network (GAN). Damages are detected through reconstruction errors and probabilistic clustering in the latent space. The self-attention mechanism enhances feature representation by capturing subtle temporal dependencies, while the GMM enables a solid separation among signals. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed model (SAE-GMM) achieves high detection accuracy, a low false positive rate, and strong generalization under varying noise conditions, outperforming traditional and deep learning baselines. Integrating Urban Factors as Predictors of Last-Mile Demand Patterns: A Spatial Analysis in Thessaloniki

While the explosive growth in e-commerce stresses urban logistics systems, city planners lack of fine-grained data in order to anticipate and manage the resulting freight flows. Using a three-stage analytical approach combining descriptive zonal statistics, hotspot analysis and different regression modeling from univariate to geographically weighted regression, this study integrates one year of parcel deliveries from a leading courier with open spatial layers of land-use zoning, census population, mobile-signal activity and household income to model last-mile demand across different land use types. A baseline linear regression shows that residential population alone accounts for roughly 30% of the variance in annual parcel volumes (2.5–3.0 deliveries per resident) while adding daytime workforce and income increases the prediction accuracy to 39%. In a similar approach where coefficients vary geographically with Geographically Weighted Regression to capture the local heterogeneity achieves a significant raise of the overall R2 to 0.54 and surpassing 0.70 in residential and institutional districts. Hot-spot analysis reveals a highly fragmented pattern where fewer than 5% of blocks generate more than 8.5% of all deliveries with no apparent correlation to the broaden land-use classes. Commercial and administrative areas exhibit the greatest intensity (1149 deliveries per ha) yet remain the hardest to explain (global R2 = 0.21) underscoring the importance of additional variables such as retail mix, street-network design and tourism flows. Through this approach, the calibrated models can be used to predict city-wide last-mile demand using only public inputs and offers a transferable, privacy-preserving template for evidence-based freight planning. By pinpointing the location and the land uses where demand concentrates, it supports targeted interventions such as micro-depots, locker allocation and dynamic curb-space management towards more sustainable and resilient urban-logistics networks. This paper studies deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based joint resource allocation and three-dimensional (3D) trajectory optimization for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)–ground access point (GAP) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Cooperative and non-cooperative users adopt different signal transmission strategies to meet diverse, task-oriented, quality-of-service requirements. Specifically, the DRL framework based on the Soft Actor–Critic algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize user scheduling, power allocation, and UAV trajectory in continuous action spaces. Closed-form power allocation and maximum weight bipartite matching are integrated to enable efficient user pairing and resource management. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly enhances system performance in terms of throughput, spectral efficiency, and interference management, while enabling robustness against channel uncertainties in dynamic IIoT environments. The findings indicate that combining model-free reinforcement learning with conventional optimization provides a viable solution for adaptive resource management in dynamic UAV-GAP cooperative communication scenarios. Tunnel construction poses significant safety challenges due to confined spaces, limited visibility, and the dynamic movement of labourers and machinery. This study addresses a critical gap in real-time, bidirectional proximity monitoring by developing and validating a prototype early-warning system that integrates real-time location systems (RTLS) with long-range (LoRa) wireless communication and ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning. The system comprises Arduino nano microcontrollers, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, and piezo buzzers to detect and signal proximity breaches between workers and equipment. Using an action research approach, three pilot case studies were conducted in a simulated tunnel environment to test the system’s effectiveness in both static and dynamic risk scenarios. The results showed that the system accurately tracked proximity and generated timely alerts when safety thresholds were crossed, although minor delays of 5–8 s and slight positional inaccuracies were noted. These findings confirm the system’s capacity to enhance situational awareness and reduce reliance on manual safety protocols. The study contributes to the tunnel safety literature by demonstrating the feasibility of low-cost, real-time monitoring solutions that simultaneously track labour and machinery. The proposed RTLS framework offers practical value for safety managers and informs future research into automated safety systems in complex construction environments. Full article

In space gravitational wave detection, various physical effects in the spacecraft, such as self-gravity, electricity, and magnetism, will introduce undesirable parasitic stiffness. The coupling noise between stiffness and the motion states of the test mass critically affects the performance of scientific detection, making accurate stiffness identification crucial. Then, the motion state of the test mass is parametrically characterized by multi-frequency sinusoidal signals as the variable to be optimized, with the optimization objectives and constraints of stiffness identification defined based on convergence time, convergence accuracy, and engineering requirements. To tackle the dual-objective, computationally expensive nature of the problem, a multigranularity surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm with individual progressive constraints (MGSAEA-IPC) is proposed. A fuzzy radial basis function neural network PID (FRBF-PID) controller is also designed to address complex control needs under varying motion states. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the convergence time after optimization is less than 2 min, and the convergence accuracy is less than 1.5 × 10−10 s−2. Space-based gravitational wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Taiji, will observe GWs from O(108) galactic binary systems, allowing a completely unobscured view of the Milky Way structure. While previous studies have established theoretical expectations based on idealized data-analysis methods that use the true catalog of sources, we present an end-to-end analysis pipeline for inferring galactic structure parameters based on the detector output alone. We employ the GBSIEVER algorithm to extract GB signals from LISA Data Challenge data and develop a maximum likelihood approach to estimate a bulge-disk galactic model using the resolved GBs. We introduce a two-tiered selection methodology, combining frequency derivative thresholding and proximity criteria, to address the systematic overestimation of frequency derivatives that compromises distance measurements. We quantify the performance of our pipeline in recovering key Galactic structure parameters and the potential biases introduced by neglecting the errors in estimating the parameters of individual GBs. Our methodology represents a step forward in developing practical techniques that bridge the gap between theoretical possibilities and observational implementation. Full article

Task-oriented medical dialogue systems face two fundamental challenges: the explosion of state-action space caused by numerous diseases and symptoms and the sparsity of informative signals during interactive diagnosis. These issues significantly hinder the accuracy and efficiency of automated clinical reasoning. To address these problems, we propose MA-HRL, a multi-agent hierarchical reinforcement learning framework that decomposes the diagnostic task into specialized agents. A high-level controller coordinates symptom inquiry via multiple worker agents, each targeting a specific disease group, while a two-tier disease classifier refines diagnostic decisions through hierarchical probability reasoning. To combat sparse rewards, we design an information entropy-based reward function that encourages agents to acquire maximally informative symptoms. Additionally, medical knowledge graphs are integrated to guide decision-making and improve dialogue coherence. Experiments on the SymCat-derived SD dataset demonstrate that MA-HRL achieves substantial improvements over state-of-the-art baselines, including +7.2% diagnosis accuracy, +0.91% symptom hit rate, and +15.94% symptom recognition rate. Ablation studies further verify the effectiveness of each module. This work highlights the potential of hierarchical, knowledge-aware multi-agent systems for interpretable and scalable medical diagnosis. Full article
