Air quality monitoring IoT is one of the approaches to achieving a sustainable future. However, the large area of IoT and the high number of monitoring microsites pose challenges for device maintenance to guarantee quality of service (QoS) in monitoring. This paper proposes a novel maintenance programming model for a large-area IoT containing 1500 monitoring microsites. In contrast to classic device maintenance, the addressed programming scenario considers the division of appropriate microsites into batches, the determination of the batch maintenance date, vehicle routing for the delivery of maintenance services, and a set of hard constraints such as QoS in air quality monitoring, the maximum number of labor working hours, and an upper limit on the total CO2 emissions. Heuristics are proposed to generate the batches of microsites and the scheduled maintenance date for the batches. A genetic algorithm is designed to find the shortest routes by which to visit the batch microsites by a fleet of vehicles. Simulations are conducted based on government open data. The experimental results show that the maintenance and transportation costs yielded by the proposed model grow linearly with the number of microsites if the fleet size is also linearly related to the microsite number. The mean time between two consecutive cycles is around 17 days, which is generally sufficient for the preparation of the required maintenance materials and personnel. With the proposed method, the decision-maker can circumvent the difficulties in handling the hard constraints, and the allocation of maintenance resources, including budget, materials, and engineering personnel, is easier to manage. Due to the recent significant increase in the scale of both domestic and international cargo transportation, the transport sector is becoming an important factor in the country’s economic development. This implies the need to improve all links in the cargo transportation chain. A key role in it is played by logistics centers, which in their activities must meet both state (CO2 emissions, reduction in road load, increase in transportation safety, etc.) and commercial (cargo transportation in the shortest time and at the lowest cost) requirements. The objective of the paper is freight transportation from China to European countries, reflecting issues of CO2 emissions, reduction in road load, and increase in transportation safety. Transport operations from the manufacturer to the logistics center are especially important in this chain, since the efficiency of transportation largely depends on the decisions made by its employees. They select the appropriate types of transport (air, sea, rail, and road transport) and routes for a specific situation. In methodology, the analyzed problem can be presented as a dynamic multi-criteria decision model. It is assumed that the decision-maker—the manager responsible for planning transportation operations—is interested in achieving three basic goals: financial goal minimizing total delivery costs from factories to the logistics center, environmental goal minimizing the negative impact of supply chain operations on the environment, and high level of customer service goal minimizing delivery times from factories to the logistics center. The proposed methodology allows one to reduce the total carbon dioxide emission by 1.1 percent and the average duration of cargo transportation by 1.47 percent. On the other hand, the total cost of their delivery increases by 1.25 percent. By combining these, it is possible to create optimal transportation options, effectively use vehicles, reduce air pollution, and increase the quality of customer service. All this would significantly contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. It is proposed to solve this complex problem based on a dynamic multi-criteria model. In this paper, the problem of constructing a schedule of transport operations from factories to a logistics center is considered. The analyzed problem can be presented as a dynamic multi-criteria decision model. Linear programming and the AHP method were used to solve it. Full article

Nowadays, Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most dynamically evolving services in the 5G ecosystem. In industrial IoT (IIoT), this service can be utilized to deliver state updates of various equipment to the remote control center for further coordination and maintenance. As a result, one of the critical metrics of interest for such a service is the Age of Information (AoI) and its upper bound—peak AoI (AoI)—characterizing the freshness of information about the state of the systems. In spite of significant attention, these metrics received over the last decade, only little is known regarding the PAoI performance of a single source (e.g., sensor) in the presence of competing traffic from other sources in queuing systems. On top of this, models with batch arrivals and batch services that can be effectively used to represent service performance in modern cellular systems such as 5G New Radio are lacking. In our study, we consider a cellular air interface representing it as a queuing system (QS) in discrete-time with batch arrivals and service and investigate performance of a single (tagged) source in presence of competing traffic from other sources having the same priority, where all the sources are modeled using the switched Poisson process (SPP) characterized by sophisticated correlational properties. We also investigated the impact of several service disciplines on the performance of the tagged source including first-come–first-served (FCFS), last-come–first-served (LCFS), random, and priority-based service. Our results illustrate that, although the qualitative behavior of the mean PAoI is different for different service disciplines, the optimal value of PAoI is insensitive to the choice of the service order. On top of this, we observed that introducing a priority in service to one of the flows may drastically affect the performance of other flows even when the overall load contribution of a single flow is rather limited. Our observations can be utilized to design packet scheduling strategies for 4G/5G cellular systems carrying traffic of state update applications. Full article

This paper presents a model for transactive energy management within microgrids (MGs) that include smart homes and buildings. The model focuses on peer-to-peer (P2P) transactive energy management among these homes, establishing a collaborative use of a cloud energy storage system (CESS) to reduce daily energy costs for both smart homes and MGs. This research assesses how smart homes and buildings can effectively utilize CESS while implementing P2P transactive energy management. Additionally, it explores the potential of a solar rooftop parking lot facility that offers charging and discharging services for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) within the MG. Controllable and non-controllable appliances, along with air conditioning (AC) systems, are managed by a home energy management (HEM) system to optimize energy interactions within daily scheduling. A linear mathematical framework is developed across three scenarios and solved using General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS 24.1.2) software for optimization. The developed model investigates the operational impacts and optimization opportunities of CESS within smart homes and MGs. It also develops a transactive energy framework in a P2P energy trading market embedded with CESS and analyzes the cost-effectiveness and arbitrage driven by CESS integration. The results of the comparative analysis reveal that integrating CESS within the P2P transactive framework not only opens up further technical opportunities but also significantly reduces MG energy costs from $55.01 to $48.64, achieving an 11.57% improvement. UAV-assisted MEC networks provide extensive communication coverage and massive computation services for mobile terminals (MTs), which are considered a promising edge paradigm to support future air–ground integrated communications. In this paper, an energy-efficient scheme in NOMA-based UAV-assisted MEC systems is proposed to address the system’s energy constraints and its inability to support massive MT access. Our goal is to minimize system-weighted energy consumption by jointly optimizing the allocation of transmission power, computation resources, and UAV trajectory scheduling. As the formulated problem is non-convex and difficult to solve directly, we decompose it into two manageable sub-problems and propose an iterative algorithm based on successive convex approximations (SCA) to solve each sub-problem alternatively. Simulation results show that the proposed joint optimization algorithm achieves a significant performance improvement compared to other benchmark approaches. Full article

With the global increase in air transport demand, the shortage of ground handling personnel to support ground operations at airports has become a major challenge, impacting airport services and causing considerable flight delays. This study presents a novel method to generate trip data that specify the origin and destination locations as the purpose of travel for each ground support equipment (GSE) vehicle. The proposed method uses data obtained from comprehensive observations of 2234 GSE vehicles over a 24 h × 7 d time interval at Tokyo International Airport. From these observations and trip data, the characteristics of the driving conditions for each GSE vehicle type, the locations where GSE traffic volume increases in the airport, and changes in the time interval are identified. The primary results show that the GSE traffic volume is the highest mainly around passenger terminals and in the vehicle corridors connecting these terminals, which aligns with the airport’s operational status. Investigating GSE driving conditions, such as the traffic flow throughout an airport, can provide valuable data to improve the efficiency of GSE scheduling and facilitate the introduction of automated driving technology. As the value and importance of urban air mobility (UAM) are being recognized, there is growing attention towards UAM. To ensure that urban air traffic can serve passengers to the greatest extent while ensuring safety and generating revenue, there is an urgent need for a transportation scheduling plan based on safety considerations. The region of Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei was selected as the case study in this research. A real-time demand transportation scheduling model for a single day was constructed, with the total service population and total cost as objective functions, and safety intervals, eVTOL performance, and passenger maximum waiting time as constraints. A Joint Optimization of Cost and Scheduling Particle Swarm Optimization (JOCS-PSO) algorithm was utilized to obtain the optimal solution. The optimal solution obtained in this study can serve 138,610,575 passengers during eVTOLs’ entire lifecycle (15 years) with a total cost of CNY 368.57 hundred million, with the cost of CNY 265.9 per passenger. Although it is higher than the driving cost, it saves 1–1.5 h and thus has high cost effectiveness during rush hours. Full article

In response to the rapid growth of air passenger and cargo transportation services and the sharp increase in congestion at various airports, it is necessary to optimize the allocation of flight schedules. On the basis of reducing the total airport delay time and ensuring the total deviation of flight schedules applied by airlines, it is necessary to consider finely configuring flight schedules with slot coordination parameters, introducing a 5 min slot coordination parameter, and optimizing airport flight schedules in different time periods. This article considers factors such as flight schedule uniqueness, corridor flow restrictions, and time adjustment range limitations to establish a three-objective flight-schedule refinement configuration model, which is solved using the NSGA-II algorithm based on the entropy weight method. Taking Beijing Capital International Airport as an example, the optimized results show that the total flight delay was reduced from 4130 min to 1142 min, and the original delay of 389 flights was reduced to 283 flights. Therefore, flight schedule optimization considering the fine-grained configuration of slot coordination parameters can effectively reduce airport delays, fully utilize time resources, and reduce waste of time slot resources. The global air transportation system continues to be greatly impacted by operational changes induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. As air traffic management (ATM) focuses on balancing system capacity with demand, many facets of ATM and system operations more broadly were subjected to dramatic changes that deviate from pre-pandemic procedures. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when air travel became one of the first transport modes to be impacted by lockdown procedures and travel restrictions, a geographically diverse cohort of researchers began investigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on air navigation service providers, airline and airport operations, on-time performance, as well as airline network structure, connectivity, crew scheduling, and service impacts due to pilot and crew shortages. In this study, we provide a comprehensive review of this aforementioned body of research literature published during one of the most tumultuous times in the history of aviation, specifically as it relates to air traffic management and air traffic control. We first organize the reviewed literature into three broad categories: strategic air traffic management and response, air traffic control and airport operational changes, and air traffic system resilience. Then, we highlight the main takeaways from each category. We emphasize specific findings that describe how various aspects of the air transportation systems could be improved in the domestic and global airline industry post-COVID. Lastly, we identify specific changes in operational procedures due to the COVID-19 pandemic and suggest future industry trends as informed by the literature. We anticipate this review article to be of interest to a broad swath of aviation industry and intercity transportation audiences. Full article

In the framework of the space-air-ground-ocean integrated network, the underwater acoustic sensor network (UASN) plays a pivotal role. The design of media access control (MAC) protocols is essential for the UASN to ensure efficient and reliable data transmission. From the perspective of differentiated services in the UASN, a service-aware and scheduling-based hybrid MAC protocol, named the SSH-MAC protocol, is proposed in this paper. In the SSH-MAC protocol, the centralized scheduling strategy is adopted by sensor nodes with environmental monitoring service, and the distributed scheduling strategy is adopted by sensor nodes with target detection service. Considering the time-varying data generation rate of sensor nodes, the sink node will switch the scheduling mode of sensor nodes based on the specific control packet and adjust the resource allocation ratio between centralized scheduling and distributed scheduling. Simulation results show that the performance of the SSH-MAC protocol, in terms of utilization, end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio, energy consumption, and payload efficiency, is good. As transit authorities increasingly adopt electric buses (EBs) to mitigate air quality concerns and greenhouse gas emissions, new challenges arise in bus scheduling and timetabling. Unlike traditional buses, EBs face operational obstacles due to their shorter range and extended charging times. Existing mathematical optimization models for operation planning of traditional buses must be revised to address these unique characteristics of EBs. This study introduces a new approach to integrate timetabling and bus scheduling to enhance the level of service and minimize operational costs, using a case study of a University shuttle bus service in Montreal, Canada. The level of service will be enhanced by reducing students waiting time and improving their in-vehicle comfort through seat availability. The scheduling aspect seeks to reduce the total operational costs, which include travel, electricity consumption, and usage costs of EBs. The proposed algorithm calculates the waiting time and seat availability for different headway values and addresses the scheduling problem using a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model with an arc-based approach, solved using the Cplex Optimization Studio software version 12.8. A normalized weighted sum technique is then applied to select the optimal headway, balancing waiting time, seat availability, and operational costs. The effectiveness of our approach was tested through a case study of Concordia University’s shuttle bus service. Comparative analysis of the current and proposed schedules shows that our approach significantly improves service quality by decreasing waiting times and increasing seat availability while optimizing cost-effectiveness compared to the existing timetable of the Concordia shuttle bus. The proposed approach ensures a smooth transition to a fully electric transit system for shuttle bus services. Full article

This study investigates inter-island accessibility in the Azores Islands (Portugal), a region marked by unique territorial fragmentation and significant distances between islands. Recognizing the pivotal role of sea and air transport in fostering the socioeconomic development of the archipelago by enhancing resident mobility and attracting tourism, we address the challenges posed by the region’s low demographic and economic influence and the pronounced imbalances among islands. The methodological approach involves the examination of various accessibility parameters, with a specific focus on hourly operations identified as presenting the most unfavorable ratios of time availability in the destinations. We analyze inter-island sea and air schedules during the winter season, emphasizing their relevance for residents engaged in travel for business, health, administration, and related purposes. We have mainly analyzed the air schedules since it was possible to make the round trip on the same day on only two maritime routes, although these have also been considered. Regarding the study outcomes, they reveal that despite positive efforts to implement air public service obligations (PSO), which mandate specific frequencies, seat allocations, and rate caps, among other examples, the limited attention given to adapting operating hours based on demand undermines the effectiveness of these measures. Contextually, this lack of adjustment results in substantial inconvenience for travelers, particularly those engaged in round-trip operations on the same day, a common scenario in inter-island mobility. In more than 70% of the operational routes, suitable travel times at the destination are significantly compromised. Full article

This paper presents the initial steps taken in analysing the benefits of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), especially Modular Autonomous Vehicles (MAVs), in search of sustainable solutions for reducing energy consumption per passenger in air transport. For this particular case, a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solution is proposed, correlating airside transport with landside transport, as an urban mobility alternative. To better understand the benefits of the proposal, this paper studies the impact on energy consumption conceptual differences between a conventional public transport fleet using Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) and an MAV fleet. Simulations for simple public transport tasks are performed to highlight the advantages of the modular vehicle concept, in which routes are assigned dynamically based on the requested passenger carrying capacity and travel distance, aiming to optimize the efficiency of the entire system. With a proven reduction in energy consumption due to better use of available passenger capacity and reduced travel times in which the vehicle is driving with a number of passengers less than half of its capacity, the concept can be addressed further in developing a predictive system that processes public transport data and delivers an optimized schedule for the entire fleet. The main goal being to improve overall operational efficiency and total cost of ownership, the second part of the paper studies the impact of weight distribution on efficiency parameters such as energy consumption, range, and overall performance of an electric bus. The impact on dynamic elements such as acceleration, braking, and cornering performance is analyzed, to assess the viability and safety of all types of electric bus operations. Full article

The recuperation factors (negative air ion concentration, airborne particulate matter, human comfort index, and acoustic environment index) of coastal green spaces have significant health effects. Most current studies focus on the distribution pattern of single recuperation factors in the forest environment; however, the comprehensive health effects of coastal green spaces are still unknown. To address this, we analyzed the distribution patterns of single and comprehensive health factors in different landscape configurations, landscape compositions, and coastal distances by principal component analysis and systematic clustering. The results show that: (1) coniferous and broadleaf mixed forests exhibit higher integrated health benefits than other landscape compositions; (2) closed and partially closed landscape configurations exhibit enhanced potential for promoting health benefits as opposed to partially open and open spaces; (3) a coastal distance of 150–300 m offers the strongest comprehensive health benefits. These findings collectively suggest that the increased cultivation of closed and partially closed mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest species at a distance of 150–300 m could effectively provide higher comprehensive health effects. Our study complements the ecosystem service of coastal green areas, especially in coastal health ecological services, providing support for coastal rehabilitation landscape planning; and can help to guide tourists in scheduling coastal health activities scientifically. A New Remote Sensing Service Mode for Agricultural Production and Management Based on Satellite–Air–Ground Spatiotemporal Monitoring

Remote sensing, the Internet, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and other technologies have become the core elements of modern agriculture and smart farming. Agricultural production and management modes guided by data and services have become a cutting-edge carrier of agricultural information monitoring, which promotes the transformation of the intelligent computing of remote sensing big data and agricultural intensive management from theory to practical applications. In this paper, the main research objective is to construct a new high-frequency agricultural production monitoring and intensive sharing service and management mode, based on the three dimensions of space, time, and attributes, that includes crop recognition, growth monitoring, yield estimation, crop disease or pest monitoring, variable-rate prescription, agricultural machinery operation, and other automatic agricultural intelligent computing applications. The platforms supported by this mode include a data management and agricultural information production subsystem, an agricultural monitoring and macro-management subsystem (province and county scales), and two mobile terminal applications (APPs). Taking Shandong as the study area of the application case, the technical framework of the system and its mobile terminals were systematically elaborated at the province and county levels, which represented macro-management and precise control of agricultural production, respectively. The automatic intelligent computing mode of satellite–air–ground spatiotemporal collaboration that we proposed fully couples data obtained from satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and IoT technologies, which can provide the accurate and timely monitoring of agricultural conditions and real-time guidance for agricultural machinery scheduling throughout the entire process of agricultural cultivation, planting, management, and harvest; the area accuracy of all obtained agricultural information products is above 90%. This paper demonstrates the necessity of customizable product and service research in agricultural intelligent computing, and the proposed practical mode can provide support for governments to participate in agricultural macro-management and decision making, which is of great significance for smart farming development and food security.
