Compared to the traditional electricity grid, a Smart Grid comprises a two-way flow of electricity and information, where smart metering is often only considered as the gateway. Smart grids, as a paradigm, have been known for more than a decade. However, these pioneering technologies must grow to meet the demands of today's digital society. Impelled by new regulations, new market structures, and new distributed energy resources, the Smart Grid has been placed at the center of profound changes in the way electricity is generated, distributed, managed and consumed. This Special Section focuses on how Smart Grids are evolving due to the pervasiveness of ICTs, what has been called the Digital Energy Grid paradigm.

Smart Grids serves as a platform to disseminate the theoretical and practical knowledge based on evidence from multiple disciplines such as Power and Power Electronics, Control, Communications and Computing Sciences, which is related or applied in the generation, transmission, distribution and distribution of Energy. The main aims of Smart Grids is to encourage researchers to publish their original research on the scientific, engineering, socio-economic and regulatory aspects of Smart Grid research in relation to Smart Cities and Communities and their related energy issues. Surveys of existing work on Smart Grids can also be considered for publication when proposed with a challenging perspective on the future of power grids.
