Blasting operations in surface mining pose a risk of flyrock, which is a critical safety concern for both personnel and infrastructure. This study presents the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and photogrammetric techniques to improve the accuracy of blast design, particularly in relation to controlling burden values and reducing flyrock. The research was conducted in a basalt quarry in Lower Silesia, where high rock fracturing complicated conventional blast planning. A DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise UAV was used to capture high-resolution aerial imagery, and 3D models were created using Strayos software. These models enabled precise analysis of bench face geometry and burden distribution with centimeter-level accuracy. The results showed a significant improvement in identifying zones with improper burden values and allowed for real-time corrections in blasthole design. Despite a ten-fold reduction in the number of images used, no loss in model quality was observed. UAV-based surveys followed software-recommended flight paths, and the application of this methodology reduced the flyrock range by an average of 42% near sensitive areas. This approach demonstrates the operational benefits and enhanced safety potential of integrating UAV-based photogrammetry into blasting design workflows. Full article

In recent years, the majority of countries have focused on the development of earth-penetrating weapons and the construction of deep underground fortifications. It is therefore necessary to assess the damage to underground structures under the attacks of earth-penetrating weapons. In this paper, fluid–solid coupling and restarting methods are used to simulate the damage processes of a granite chamber subjected to the combined action of penetration and explosion with the commercial software of LS-DYNA R11. The applicability of the penetration model and the blasting model is verified by the previous penetration and blasting tests. The verified models are used to simulate the complete process of the underground granite chamber attacked by the earth-penetrating weapons. Based on peak particle velocity (PPV) damage criteria, the numerical results show that the hypervelocity impact of the earth penetrating weapons only causes local damage to the granite rock mass, and more serious damage is caused by the subsequent explosion. During the subsequent explosion, part of the detonation products and energy can escape along the penetration trajectory with the blast loading, resulting in the attenuation of blast stress waves. Subsequently, the relationship between the overlay thickness and the vibration attenuation in granite is also studied, which provides a fast method to determine the threshold damage level for an underground chamber to collapse under the attacks of earth-penetrating weapons. The stability of the intermediate rock wall in the blasting construction of bifurcated small-spacing tunnels directly affects the construction safety of the tunnel structure. Clarifying the damage characteristics of the intermediate rock wall has significant engineering value for ensuring the safe and efficient construction of bifurcated tunnels. Based on the Tashan North Road Expressway Tunnel Project, this paper investigated the damage characteristics of the intermediate rock wall in bifurcated tunnels under different blasting construction schemes, using numerical simulation methods to account for the combined effects of in situ stress and blasting loads. The results were validated using comparisons with the measured damage depth of the surrounding rock in the ramp tunnels. The results indicate that the closer the location is to the starting point of the bifurcated tunnel, the thinner the intermediate rock wall and the more severe the damage to the surrounding rock. When the thickness of the intermediate rock wall exceeds 4.2 m, the damage zone does not penetrate through the wall. The damage to the intermediate rock wall exhibits an asymmetric “U”-shaped distribution, with greater damage on the side of the trailing tunnel at the section of the haunch and sidewall, while the opposite is true at the section of the springing. During each excavation step of the ramp and main-line tunnels, the damage to the intermediate rock wall is primarily induced by blasting loads. As construction progresses, the damage to the rock wall increases progressively under the combined effects of blasting loads and the excavation space effect. In the construction of bifurcated tunnels, the greater the distance between the headings of the leading and trailing tunnels is, the less damage will be inflicted on the intermediate rock wall. Constructing the tunnel with a larger cross-sectional area first will cause more damage to the intermediate rock wall. When the bench method is employed, an increase in the bench length leads to a reduction in the damage to the intermediate rock wall. The findings provide valuable insights for the selection of construction schemes and the protection of the intermediate rock wall when applying the bench method in the construction of bifurcated small-spacing tunnels. Underground blasting vibrations are a critical factor influencing the stability of mine slopes. However, existing studies have yet to establish a quantitative relationship or clarify the underlying mechanisms linking blasting-induced vibrations and slope deformation. Taking the Shilu Iron Mine as a case study, this research develops a dynamic mechanical response model of slope stability that accounts for blasting loads. By integrating slope radar remote sensing data and applying the Pearson correlation coefficient, this study quantitatively evaluates—for the first time—the correlation between underground blasting activity and slope surface deformation. The results reveal that blasting vibrations are characterized by typical short-duration, high-amplitude pulse patterns, with horizontal shear stress identified as the primary trigger for slope shear failure. Both elevation and lithological conditions significantly influence the intensity of vibration responses: high-elevation areas and structurally loose rock masses exhibit greater dynamic sensitivity. A pronounced lag effect in slope deformation was observed following blasting, with cumulative displacements increasing by 10.13% and 34.06% at one and six hours post-blasting, respectively, showing a progressive intensification over time. Mechanistically, the impact of blasting on slope stability operates through three interrelated processes: abrupt perturbations in the stress environment, stress redistribution due to rock mass deformation, and the long-term accumulation of fatigue-induced damage. This integrated approach provides new insights into slope behavior under blasting disturbances and offers valuable guidance for slope stability assessment and hazard mitigation. Full article

Background: Rock–blast design is a canonical inverse problem that joins elastodynamic partial differential equations (PDEs), fracture mechanics, and stochastic heterogeneity. Objective: Guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol, a systematic review of mathematical methods for geomechanically informed blast modelling and optimisation is provided. Methods: A Scopus–Web of Science search (2000–2025) retrieved 2415 records; semantic filtering and expert screening reduced the corpus to 97 studies. Topic modelling with Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers Topic (BERTOPIC) and bibliometrics organised them into (i) finite-element and finite–discrete element simulations, including arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulations; (ii) geomechanics-enhanced empirical laws; and (iii) machine-learning surrogates and multi-objective optimisers. Results: High-fidelity simulations delimit blast-induced damage with ≤0.2 m mean absolute error; extensions of the Kuznetsov–Ram equation cut median-size mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) from 27% to 15%; Gaussian-process and ensemble learners reach a coefficient of determination (R2>0.95) while providing closed-form uncertainty; Pareto optimisers lower peak particle velocity (PPV) by up to 48% without productivity loss. Synthesis: Four themes emerge—surrogate-assisted PDE-constrained optimisation, probabilistic domain adaptation, Bayesian model fusion for digital-twin updating, and entropy-based energy metrics. Conclusions: Persisting challenges in scalable uncertainty quantification, coupled discrete–continuous fracture solvers, and rigorous fusion of physics-informed and data-driven models position blast design as a fertile test bed for advances in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and machine-learning theory. With the development of underground space in urban areas, the demand for tunneling through existing railways is increasing. The adverse effects of cut-blasting during the construction of tunnels under crossing existing railways are investigated. Combined with the principle of blasting seismic wave superposition, LS-DYNA numerical simulation is used to analyze the seismic wave superposition law under different superposition methods. This study also investigates the vibration reduction effect of millisecond blasting for cut-blasting under the different classes of surrounding rocks. The results show that the vibration reduction forms of millisecond blasting can be divided into separation and interference of waveform. Based on the principle of superposition of blasting seismic waves, vibration reduction through wave interference is further divided. At the same time, a new vibration reduction mode is proposed. This vibration reduction mode can significantly improve construction efficiency while improving damping efficiency. The new vibration reduction mode can increase the vibration reduction to 80% while improving construction efficiency. Additionally, there is a significant difference in the damping effect of different classes of surrounding rock on the blasting seismic wave. Poor-quality surrounding rock enhances the attenuation of seismic wave velocity and peak stress in the surrounding rock. In the Zhongliangshan Tunnel, a tunnel cut-blasting construction at a depth of 42 m, the best vibration reduction plan of Class III is 3 ms millisecond blasting, in which the surface points achieve separation vibration reduction. The best vibration reduction plan of Class V is 1 ms millisecond blasting, in which the surface points achieve a new vibration reduction mode. During the tunnel blasting construction process, electronic detonators are used for millisecond blasting of the cut-blasting. This method can reduce the vibration effects generated by blasting. The stability of the existing railway is ultimately guaranteed. This can improve construction efficiency while ensuring construction safety. This study can provide significant guidance for the blasting construction of the tunnel through the railway. Full article

Blasting is an effective technique for fragmenting rock in open-pit mining operations. Blasting operations produce either boulders or fine fragments, both of which increase costs and pose environmental risks. As a result, predicting the mean fragmentation size (MFS) distribution of rock is critical for assessing blasting operations’ quality and mitigating risks. Due to the limitations of empirical and statistical models, several researchers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques to predict the MFS distribution of rock. Thus, this study uses three AI tree-based algorithms—extra trees (ET), gradient boosting (GB), and random forest (RF)—to predict the MFS distribution of rock. The prediction accuracy of the models is optimized utilizing the tree-structured Parzen estimators (TPEs) algorithm, which results in three models: TPE-ET, TPE-GB, and TPE-RF. The dataset used in this study was collected from the published literature and through the data augmentation of a large-scale dataset of 3740 blast samples. Among the evaluated models, the TPE-ET model exhibits the best performance with a coefficient of determination (R2), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and max error of 0.93, 0.04, 0.03, and 0.25 during the testing phase. Moreover, the block size (XB, m) and modulus of elasticity (E, GPa) parameters are identified as the most influential parameters for predicting the MFS distribution of rock. Lastly, an interactive web application has been developed to assist engineers with the timely prediction of MFS. The predictive model developed in this study is a reliable intelligent model because it combines high accuracy with a strong, explainable AI tool for predicting MFS. Full article

To study the optimization of construction parameters and schemes for complex connecting tunnels in extra-long highway tunnels in granite strata, the research team, relying on the construction project of the complex connecting tunnel between the Xiaolongmen Extra-long Highway Tunnel and the ultra-deep shaft, established an on-site monitoring scheme and a refined numerical simulation model. It systematically analyzed the impact of various construction parameters on the construction process of connecting tunnels and the main tunnel, and on this basis, optimized the construction scheme, improving construction efficiency. The research results show that (1) after the excavation of the connecting tunnel, the confining pressure at the top of the working face decreases rapidly, while the confining pressure on both sides increases rapidly; the extreme point of the confining pressure decrease is located at the central point at the top of the excavated working face. (2) For Class III surrounding rock excavated using the full-face blasting method, the maximum influence range of working face excavation on the stratum along the tunneling direction is approximately 4D (where D represents the excavation step). (3) The larger the excavation step of the connecting tunnel, the more obvious the stress concentration phenomenon at the central point of the working face arch crown, and the excavation step should be optimally controlled within the range of 2–3 m. (4) When explosives in the blast hole adopt decoupled charging, the ratio of borehole diameter to charge diameter can be increased to utilize the air gap to buffer the energy generated by the explosion. Blasting is one of the most widely used and cost-effective techniques for rock excavation and fragmentation in open-pit mining, particularly for large-scale operations. However, repeated or poorly controlled blasting can generate excessive ground vibrations that threaten slope stability by causing structural damage, fracturing of the rock mass, and potential failure. Evaluating the effects of blast-induced vibrations is essential to ensure safe and sustainable mining operations. This study investigates the impact of blasting-induced vibrations on slope stability at the Saindak Copper-Gold Open-Pit Mine in Pakistan. A comprehensive dataset was compiled, including field-monitored ground vibration measurements—specifically peak particle velocity (PPV) and key blast design parameters such as spacing (S), burden (B), stemming length (SL), maximum charge per delay (MCPD), and distance from the blast point (D). Geomechanical properties of slope-forming rock units were validated through laboratory testing. Slope stability was analyzed using pseudo-static limit equilibrium methods (LEMs) based on the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion, employing four approaches: Fellenius, Janbu, Bishop, and Spencer. Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses quantified the influence of blasting parameters on slope behavior, and sensitivity analysis determined the cumulative distribution of slope failure and dynamic response under increasing seismic loads. FoS values were calculated for both east and west pit slopes under static and dynamic conditions. Among all methods, Spencer consistently yielded the highest FoS values. Under static conditions, FoS was 1.502 for the east slope and 1.254 for the west. Under dynamic loading, FoS declined to 1.308 and 1.102, reductions of 12.9% and 11.3%, respectively, as calculated using the Spencer method. The east slope exhibited greater stability due to its gentler angle. Correlation analysis revealed that burden had a significant negative impact (r = −0.81) on stability. Sensitivity analysis showed that stability deteriorates notably when PPV exceeds 10.9 mm/s. Although daily blasting did not critically compromise stability, the west slope showed greater vulnerability, underscoring the need for stricter control of blasting energy to mitigate vibration-induced instability and promote long-term operational sustainability. This study presents a discrete event simulation model to minimize operating costs in quarry mining processes by determining the optimal allocation of backhoes and dump trucks, which are the primary mining equipment. The modeling focuses on four principal vehicle types (24-ton dump truck, 2.0 m3 backhoe, 41-ton dump truck, 4.64 m3 backhoe) commonly deployed in quarry mining. The simulation replicates the sequential mining stages involving soil removal, rock ripping (weathered rock or weathered soil), and blasting operations. This methodology is applied to a case study of mining process planning under resource constraints, incorporating real-world quarry conditions in South Korea. Results demonstrate that optimizing the number of equipment units reduces construction costs and shortens the construction period by decreasing dump truck waiting times. When the number of backhoes is limited to 10 during operations, findings indicate an increase in costs and a gradual decline in net profit. Additionally, the interaction between the 24-ton and 41-ton dump trucks is shown to influence the optimal allocation strategy. The simulation-based optimization executes iterative experiments for each scenario, yielding statistically robust results within a 95% confidence interval, thereby supporting informed decision-making for managers. This study focuses on the monitoring and early warning of landslide hazards induced by blasting caving in the Shizhuyuan polymetallic mine. A 30-channel microseismic monitoring system was deployed to capture the spatiotemporal characteristics of rock mass fracturing during a large-scale directional stratified blasting operation (419 tons) conducted on 21 June 2012. A total of 85 microseismic events were recorded, revealing two distinct zones of intense rock failure: Zone I (below 630 m elevation, P1–P3, C6–C8) and Zone II (above 630 m elevation, P4–P5, C1–C6). The upper slope collapse occurred within 5 min post-blasting, as documented by real-time monitoring and video recordings. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to 54 microseismic events in Zone II to determine the kinematic characteristics of the slip surface, yielding a dip direction of 324.6° and a dip angle of 73.2°. Complementary moment tensor analysis further revealed that shear failure dominated the slope instability, with pronounced shear fracturing observed in the 645–700 m height range. This study innovatively integrates spatial microseismic event distribution with geomechanical mechanisms, elucidating the dynamic evolution of blasting-induced landslides. The proposed methodology provides a novel approach for monitoring and forecasting slope instability triggered by underground mining, offering significant implications for disaster prevention in similar mining contexts. The maintenance and operation of these entries for a reference coal yield of 1000 t necessitate 72–75 man-shifts, of which 90–95% are expended on mitigating ground pressure effects and restoring support integrity. Conventional heave control measures—such as relief drifts, slotting, drainage, secondary blasting, and the application of concrete or rock–bolt systems—deliver either transient efficacy or incur prohibitive labor and material expenditures while lacking unified methodologies for predictive forecasting and support parameter design. This study therefore advocates for an integrated framework that synergizes geomechanical characterization, deformation prognosis, and the tailored selection of reinforcement schemes (incorporating both sidewall and floor-anchoring systems with directed preloading), calibrated to seam depth, geometry, and lithological properties. Employing deformation state assessments to optimize reinforcement layouts for floor stabilization in coal mine workings is projected to curtail repair volumes by 30–40% whilst significantly enhancing operational safety, efficiency, and the punctuality of face preparation. Numerical Study of Surrounding Rock Damage in Deep-Buried Tunnels for Building-Integrated Underground Structures

When deep-buried tunnels are excavated using the drill-and-blast method, the surrounding rock is subjected to combined cyclic blasting loads and excavation-induced stress unloading. Understanding the distribution characteristics of rock damage zones under these conditions is crucial for the design and safety of building-integrated underground structures. This study investigates the relationship between surrounding rock damage and in situ stress conditions through numerical simulation methods. A constitutive model suitable for simulating rock mass damage was developed and implemented in the LS-DYNA (version R12) code via a user-defined material model, with parameters determined using the Hoek–Brown failure criterion. A finite element model was established to analyze surrounding rock damage under cyclic blasting loads, and the model was validated using field data. Simulations were then carried out to explore the evolution of the damage zone under various stress conditions. The results show that with increasing hydrostatic pressure, the extent of the damage zone first decreases and then increases, with blasting-induced damage dominating under lower pressure and unloading-induced shear failure prevailing at higher pressure. When the hydrostatic pressure is less than 20 MPa, the surrounding rock stabilizes at a distance greater than 12.6 m from the tunnel face, whereas at hydrostatic pressures of 30 MPa and 40 MPa, this distance increases to 29.4 m. When the lateral pressure coefficient is low, tensile failure occurs mainly at the vault and floor, while shear failure dominates at the arch waist. As the lateral pressure coefficient increases, the failure mode at the vault shifts from tensile to shear. Additionally, when the horizontal stress perpendicular to the tunnel axis (σH) is less than the vertical stress (σv), variations in the axial horizontal stress (σh) have a significant effect on shear failure. Due to the difficulty of creating directional fractures efficiently and accurately with existing non-explosive rock-breaking methods, a directional fracturing technique utilizing a coal-based solid waste expansive agent, termed the instantaneous expansion with a single fracture (IESF), has been developed. IESF can generate high-pressure gases within 0.05–0.5 s and utilize gas pressure to achieve directional rock fragmentation. The rock-breaking mechanisms under double-borehole conditions of conventional blasting (CB), shaped charge blasting (SCB), and IESF were studied by theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and in situ test. The gas pressure distribution within directional fractures of IESF was determined, and the crack propagation criterion between double-borehole was established. Numerical simulation results indicated that the stress distribution in CB was random. SCB exhibited tensile stress of −10.89 MPa in the inter-borehole region and −8.33 MPa on the outer-borehole region, while IESF generated −14.47 MPa and −12.62 MPa in the corresponding regions, demonstrating that stresses generated between adjacent boreholes can be superimposed in the inter-hole region. In CB, strain was concentrated along main fractures. SCB exhibited strains of 7 mm and 8 mm in the shaped charge direction, while non-shaped charge directions showed a strain of 1.5 mm. For IESF, strain in the shaped charge direction measured 6 mm, compared to 1 mm in non-shaped charge directions, resulting in superior directional fracture control. In situ test results from Donglin Coal Mine demonstrated that IESF can form superior directional rock-breaking efficacy compared to both CB and SCB, with the average crack rates of 95.5% by IESF higher than 85.0% by SCB. This technique provides a non-explosive method that realizes precise control of the direction of cracks while avoiding the high-risk and high-disturbance problems of explosives blasting. Full article

Rock slopes containing weak interlayers are highly prone to instability under the disturbance of blasting vibrations due to the influence of structural planes. To address the limitations of traditional models in predicting vibration attenuation for such slopes, this study conducted in situ blasting tests on sand–mudstone interbedded slopes from the Pinglu Canal project. Based on dimensional analysis, the Sadowsky formula was modified to incorporate both elevation difference (H/R) and soft interlayer dip angle (θ), resulting in an enhanced predictive model. Field data revealed that the proposed model significantly improved prediction accuracy, with determination coefficients (r2) increasing from 0.847 to 0.9946 in the vertical (Z) direction. Compared to traditional models, the root mean square error (RMSE) decreased by 96%, demonstrating superior capability in capturing vibration attenuation influenced by geological heterogeneity. Key findings reveal that steeper interlayer dip angles significantly accelerate PPV attenuation, particularly in the X direction. These findings provide a critical tool for optimizing blasting parameters in layered rock slopes, effectively mitigating collapse risks and enhancing construction safety. The model’s practicality was validated through its application in the Pinglu Canal project, offering a paradigm for similar engineering challenges in complex geological settings. Full article
