Short fiber-reinforced polymer (SFRP) has been extensively applied in structural engineering due to its exceptional specific strength and superior mechanical properties. Its mechanical behavior under medium strain rate conditions has become a key focus of ongoing research. A comprehensive understanding of the response characteristics and underlying mechanisms under such conditions is of critical importance for both theoretical development and practical engineering applications. This study proposes an innovative three-dimensional (3D) multiscale constitutive model that comprehensively integrates mesoscopic fiber–matrix interface effects and pore characteristics. To systematically investigate the dynamic response and damage evolution of SFRP under medium strain rate conditions, 3D-printed SFRP porous structures with volume fractions of 25%, 35%, and 45% are designed and subjected to drop hammer impact experiments combined with multiscale numerical simulations. The experimental and simulation results demonstrate that, for specimens with a 25% volume fraction, the strain rate strengthening effect is the primary contributor to the increase in peak stress. In contrast, for specimens with a 45% volume fraction, the interaction between damage evolution and strain rate strengthening leads to a more complex stress–strain response. The specific energy absorption (SEA) of 25% volume fraction specimens increases markedly with increasing strain rate. However, for specimens with 35% and 45% volume fractions, the competition between these two mechanisms results in non-monotonic variations in energy absorption efficiency (EAE). The dominant failure mode under impact loading is shear-dominated compression, with damage evolution becoming increasingly complex as the fiber volume fraction increases. Furthermore, the damage characteristics transition from fiber pullout and matrix folding at lower volume fractions to the coexistence of brittle and ductile behaviors at higher volume fractions. The numerical simulations exhibit strong agreement with the experimental data. Multi-directional cross-sectional analysis further indicates that the initiation and propagation of shear bands are the principal drivers of structural instability. This study offers a robust theoretical foundation for the impact-resistant design and dynamic performance optimization of 3D-printed short fiber-reinforced polymer (SFRP) porous structures. Underground gas storage (UGS) in heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs is crucial for energy security but frequently faces wellbore instability challenges, which traditional static methods struggle to address due to dynamic full life cycle changes. This study systematically analyzes the dynamic evolution of wellbore stress in the Bs8 well (Qianmiqiao carbonate UGS) during drilling, acidizing, and injection-production operations, establishing a quantitative risk assessment model based on the Mohr–Coulomb criterion. Results indicate a significantly higher wellbore instability risk during drilling and initial gas injection stages, primarily manifested as shear failure, with greater severity observed in deeper well sections (e.g., 4277 m) due to higher in situ stresses. During acidizing, while the wellbore acid column pressure can reduce principal stress differences, the process also significantly weakens rock strength (e.g., by approximately 30%), inherently increasing the risk of wellbore instability, though the primary collapse mode remains shallow shear breakout. In the injection-production phase, increasing formation pressure is identified as the dominant factor, shifting the collapse mode from initial shallow shear failure to predominant wide shear collapse, notably at 90°/270° from the maximum horizontal stress direction, thereby significantly expanding the unstable zone. This dynamic assessment method provides crucial theoretical support for full life cycle integrity management and optimizing safe operation strategies for carbonate gas storage wells. Full article

Every year, a billion tires are discarded worldwide, with only a small percentage being recycled. This leads to significant environmental hazards, such as fire risks and improper disposal. Silty sand also presents technical challenges due to its poor shear strength, susceptibility to erosion, and low permeability. This study explores the incorporation of crumb rubber derived from waste tires into silty sand to enhance its mechanical properties. Crumb rubber particles of varying sizes (3–6 mm, 5–10 mm, and 10–20 mm) were mixed with silty sand at 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% percentages, respectively. Triaxial compression tests of unconsolidated and consolidated undrained tests with cell pressures of 100, 300, and 500 kPa were conducted. The deviatoric stress, shear stress, and stiffness modulus were investigated. The results revealed that the addition of crumb rubber significantly increased the deviatoric and shear stresses, especially at particle sizes of 5–10 mm, with contents of 3%, 6%, and 9%. Additionally, the stiffness modulus was notably reduced in the mixture containing 6% crumb rubber tire. These findings suggest that incorporating crumb rubber tires into silty sand not only improves silty sand performance but also offers an environmentally sustainable approach to tire waste recycling, making it a viable strategy for silty sand stabilization in construction and geotechnical engineering performance. This paper presents a theoretical model of a thin, penny-shaped piezoelectric actuator bonded to an isotropic thermo-elastic substrate under coupled electrical-thermal-diffusive loading. The problem is assumed to be axisymmetric, and the peeling stress of the film is neglected in accordance with membrane theory, yielding a simplified equilibrium equation for the piezoelectric film. By employing potential theory and the Hankel transform technique, the surface strain of the substrate is analytically derived. Under the assumption of perfect bonding, a governing integral equation is established in terms of interfacial shear stress. The solution to this integral equation is obtained numerically using orthotropic Chebyshev polynomials. The derived results include the interfacial shear stress, stress intensity factors, as well as the radial and hoop stresses within the system. Finite element analysis is conducted to validate the theoretical predictions. Furthermore, parametric studies elucidate the influence of material mismatch and actuator geometry on the mechanical response. The findings demonstrate that, the performance of the piezoelectric actuator can be optimized through judicious control of the applied electrical-thermal-diffusive loads and careful selection of material and geometric parameters. This work provides valuable insights for the design and optimization of piezoelectric actuator structures in practical engineering applications. Full article

Analysis of Asphalt Pavement Response to Long Longitudinal Slope Considering the Influence of Temperature Fields

With the rapid increase in traffic volume and the number of heavy-duty vehicles, the load on asphalt pavements has increased significantly. Especially on sections with long longitudinal slopes, the internal stress conditions of asphalt pavement have become even more complex. This study aims to investigate the thermal–mechanical coupling behavior of asphalt pavement structures on long longitudinal slopes under the combined influence of temperature fields and moving loads. A pavement temperature field model was developed based on the climatic conditions of Nanning (AAT: 21.8 °C; Tmax: 37 °C; Tmin: 3 °C; AAP: 1453.4 mm). In addition, a three-dimensional finite element model of asphalt pavement structures on long longitudinal slopes was established using finite element software. Variations in pavement mechanical responses were compared under different vehicle axle loads (100–200 kN), slope gradients (0–5%), braking coefficients (0–0.7), and asphalt mixture layer thicknesses (2–8 cm). The results indicate that the pavement structure exhibits a strong capacity for pressure attenuation, with the middle and lower surface layers showing more pronounced stress reduction—up to 40%—significantly greater than the 6.5% observed in the upper surface layer. As the axle load increases from 100 kN to 200 kN, the internal mechanical responses of the pavement show a linear relationship with load magnitude, with an average increase of approximately 29%. In addition, the internal shearing stress of the pavement is more sensitive to changes in slope and braking coefficient; when the slope increases from 0% to 5% and the braking coefficient increases from 0 to 0.7, the shear stress at the bottom of the upper surface layer increases by 12% and 268%, respectively. This study provides guidance for the design of asphalt pavements on long longitudinal slopes. In future designs, special attention should be given to enhancing the shear strength of the surface layer and improving the interlayer bonding performance. In particular, under conditions of steep slopes and frequent heavy vehicle traffic, the thickness and modulus of the upper surface asphalt mixture may be appropriately increased. Full article

Due to post-cementing hydraulic fracturing and other operational stresses, inadequate mechanical properties or suboptimal design of the cement sheath can lead to tensile failure and microcrack development, compromising both hydrocarbon recovery and well integrity. In this study, three field-deployed cement slurry systems were compared on the basis of their basic mechanical properties such as compressive and tensile strength. Laboratory-scale physical simulations of hydraulic fracturing during shale oil production were conducted, using dynamic permeability as a quantitative indicator of integrity loss. The experimental results show that evaluating only basic mechanical properties is insufficient for cement slurry system design. A more comprehensive mechanical assessment is re-quired. Incorporation of an expansive agent into the cement slurry system can alleviate the damage caused by the microannulus to the interfacial sealing performance of the cement sheath, while adding a toughening agent can alleviate the damage caused by tensile cracks to the sealing performance of the cement sheath matrix. Through this research, a microexpansive and toughened cement slurry system, modified with both expansive and toughening agents, was optimized. The expansive agent and toughening agent can significantly enhance the shear strength, the flexural strength, and the interfacial hydraulic isolation strength of cement stone. Moreover, the expansion agents mitigate the detrimental effects of microannulus generation on the interfacial sealing, while the toughening agents alleviate the damage caused by tensile cracking to the bulk sealing performance of the cement sheath matrix. This system has been successfully implemented in over 100 wells in the GL block of Daqing Oilfield. Field application results show that the proportion of high-quality well sections in the horizontal section reached 88.63%, indicating the system’s high performance in enhancing zonal isolation and cementing quality. The strength mobilisation framework was adopted for the first time to describe the stress–strain responses for three different types of sands, including a total of 30 published drained triaxial tests—25 for Karlsruhe Fine Sand, 2 for Ottawa sands and 3 for Fontainebleau sand, under confining pressures ranging from 50 to 400 kPa. The peak shear strength τpeak obtained from drained triaxial shearing of these sands was used to normalise shear stress. Shear strains normalised at peak strength γpeak and at half peak of shear strength γM=2 were taken as the normalised reference strains, and the results were compared. Power–law functions were then derived when the mobilised strength was between 0.2τpeak and 0.8τpeak. Exponents of the power–law functions of these sands were found to be lower than in the published undrained shearing data of clays. Using γM=2 as the reference strain shows a slightly better power–law correlation than using γpeak. Linear relationships between the reference strains and variables, such as relative density, relative dilatancy index, and dilatancy, are identified. Full article

The placement of hydraulic elements in existing pool-type fishways to make them more suitable for Cyprinid fish is an issue of increasing interest in fishway research. Hydrodynamic characteristics and fish behavior at the representative pool of the fishway with bottom orifices and notches were assessed at the Dagdelen hydropower plant in the Ceyhan River Basin, Türkiye. Three-dimensional velocity measurements were taken in the pool of the fishway using an Acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The measurements were taken with and without a brush block at two different vertical distances from the bottom, which were below and above the level of bristles tips. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted for the studied fishway. The numerical model utilized Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with the Darcy–Forchheimer law, wherein brush blocks were represented as homogenous porous media. Our results revealed that the relative submergence of bristles in the brush block plays a very important role in velocity and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions. After the placement of the submerged brush block, flow velocity and the lateral RSS component were reduced, and a resting area was created behind the brush block below the bristles’ tips. Fish movements in the pool were recorded by underwater cameras under real-time operation conditions. The heatmap analysis, which is a 2-dimensional fish spatial presence visualization technique for a specific time period, showed that Capoeta damascina avoided the areas with high turbulent fluctuations during the tests, and 61.5% of the fish presence intensity was found to be in the low Reynolds shear regions in the pool. This provides a clear case for the real-world ecological benefits of retrofitting existing pool-weir fishways with such flexible hydraulic elements. Full article

Because artificially cemented granular (ACG) materials employ diverse combinations of aggregates and binders—including cemented soil, low-cement-content cemented sand and gravel (LCSG), and concrete—their stress–strain responses vary widely. In LCSG, the binder dosage is typically limited to 40–80 kg/m3 and the sand–gravel skeleton is often obtained directly from on-site or nearby excavation spoil, endowing the material with a markedly lower embodied carbon footprint and strong alignment with current low-carbon, green-construction objectives. Yet, such heterogeneity makes a single material-specific constitutive model inadequate for predicting the mechanical behavior of other ACG variants, thereby constraining broader applications in dam construction and foundation reinforcement. This study systematically summarizes and analyzes the stress–strain and volumetric strain–axial strain characteristics of ACG materials under conventional triaxial conditions. Generalized hyperbolic and parabolic equations are employed to describe these two families of curves, and closed-form expressions are proposed for key mechanical indices—peak strength, elastic modulus, and shear dilation behavior. Building on generalized plasticity theory, we derive the plastic flow direction vector, loading direction vector, and plastic modulus, and develop a concise, transferable elastoplastic model suitable for the full spectrum of ACG materials. Validation against triaxial data for rock-fill materials, LCSG, and cemented coal–gangue backfill shows that the model reproduces the stress and deformation paths of each material class with high accuracy. Quantitative evaluation of the peak values indicates that the proposed constitutive model predicts peak deviatoric stress with an error of 1.36% and peak volumetric strain with an error of 3.78%. The corresponding coefficients of determination R2 between the predicted and measured values are 0.997 for peak stress and 0.987 for peak volumetric strain, demonstrating the excellent engineering accuracy of the proposed model. The results provide a unified theoretical basis for deploying ACG—particularly its low-cement, locally sourced variants—in low-carbon dam construction, foundation rehabilitation, and other sustainable civil engineering projects. This study investigates the improvement effect and micro-mechanism of guar gum and palm fibers, two eco-friendly materials, on expansive soil. The study uses disintegration tests, unconfined compressive strength tests, triaxial compression tests, and SEM analysis to evaluate the enhancement of mechanical properties. The results show that the guar gum–palm fiber composite significantly improves the compressive and shear strength of expansive soil. The optimal ratio is 2% guar gum, 0.4% palm fiber, and 6 mm palm fiber length. Increasing fiber length initially boosts and then reduces unconfined compressive strength. Guar gum increases unconfined compressive strength by 187.18%, further improved by 20.9% with palm fibers. When fiber length is fixed, increasing palm fiber content increases and then stabilizes peak stress and shear strength (cohesion and internal friction angle), improving by 27.30%, 52.1%, and 12.4%, respectively, compared to soil improved with only guar gum. Micro-analysis reveals that guar gum enhances bonding between soil particles via a gel matrix, improving water stability and mechanical properties, while palm fibers reinforce the soil and inhibit crack propagation. The synergistic effect significantly enhances composite-improved soil performance, offering economic and environmental benefits, and provides insights for expansive soil engineering management. Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams constructed with low-strength concrete are susceptible to sudden splitting failures in the strut region due to shear–compression stresses. To mitigate this vulnerability, various strengthening techniques, including steel plates, fiber-reinforced polymer sheets, and cementitious composites, have been explored to confine the strut area. This study investigates the structural performance of RC deep beams with low-strength concrete, strengthened externally using an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer. To ensure effective confinement and uniform shear distribution, shear reinforcement was provided at equal intervals with configurations of zero, one, and two vertical shear reinforcements. Four-point bending tests revealed that the ECC layer significantly enhanced the shear capacity, increasing load-carrying capacity by 51.6%, 54.7%, and 46.7% for beams with zero, one, and two shear reinforcements, respectively. Failure analysis through non-linear finite element modeling corroborated experimental observations, confirming shear–compression failure characterized by damage in the concrete struts. The strut-and-tie method, modified to incorporate the tensile strength of ECC and shear reinforcement actual stress values taken from the FE analysis, was used to predict the shear capacity. The predicted values were within 10% of the experimental results, underscoring the reliability of the analytical approach. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of ECC in improving shear performance and mitigating strut failure in RC deep beams made with low-strength concrete. Full article

Bamboo scrimber is an environmentally friendly biomass building material with excellent mechanical properties. However, it is susceptible to delamination failure of the transverse fibers under compression, which limits its structural performance. To address this problem, this study utilizes steel tubes to encase bamboo scrimber, forming a novel bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular column. This configuration enables the steel tube to provide effective lateral restraint to the bamboo material. Axial compression tests were conducted on 18 specimens, including bamboo scrimber columns and bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular columns, to investigate the effects of steel ratio and loading mode (full-section and core loading) on the axial compression performance. The test results indicate that the external steel tubes significantly enhance the structural load-bearing capacity and deformation capacity. Primary failure modes of the composite columns include shear failure and buckling. The ultimate stress and strain of the structure are positively correlated with the steel ratio; as the steel ratio increases, the ultimate stress of the specimens can increase by up to 19.2%, while the ultimate strain can increase by up to 37.7%. The core-loading specimens exhibited superior load-bearing capacity and deformation ability compared to the full-section-loading specimens. Considering the differences in the curves for full-section and core loading, the steel tube confinement coefficient was introduced, and the predictive models for the ultimate stress and ultimate strain of the bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular column were developed with accurate prediction. Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. Underground blasting vibrations are a critical factor influencing the stability of mine slopes. However, existing studies have yet to establish a quantitative relationship or clarify the underlying mechanisms linking blasting-induced vibrations and slope deformation. Taking the Shilu Iron Mine as a case study, this research develops a dynamic mechanical response model of slope stability that accounts for blasting loads. By integrating slope radar remote sensing data and applying the Pearson correlation coefficient, this study quantitatively evaluates—for the first time—the correlation between underground blasting activity and slope surface deformation. The results reveal that blasting vibrations are characterized by typical short-duration, high-amplitude pulse patterns, with horizontal shear stress identified as the primary trigger for slope shear failure. Both elevation and lithological conditions significantly influence the intensity of vibration responses: high-elevation areas and structurally loose rock masses exhibit greater dynamic sensitivity. A pronounced lag effect in slope deformation was observed following blasting, with cumulative displacements increasing by 10.13% and 34.06% at one and six hours post-blasting, respectively, showing a progressive intensification over time. Mechanistically, the impact of blasting on slope stability operates through three interrelated processes: abrupt perturbations in the stress environment, stress redistribution due to rock mass deformation, and the long-term accumulation of fatigue-induced damage. This integrated approach provides new insights into slope behavior under blasting disturbances and offers valuable guidance for slope stability assessment and hazard mitigation. Full article

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites exhibit significant advantages over conventional structural webbing materials, including lightweight and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the localized compression performance of the proposed GFRP grid web–concrete composite beam through experimental and numerical analyses. Three specimen groups with variable shear-span ratios (λ = 1.43, 1.77) and local stiffener specimens were designed to assess their localized compressive behavior. Experimental results reveal that a 19.2% reduction in shear-span ratio enhances ultimate load capacity by 22.93% and improves stiffness by 66.85%, with additional performance gains of 77.53% in strength and 94.29% in stiffness achieved through local stiffener implementation. In addition, finite element (FE) analysis demonstrated a strong correlation with experimental results, showing less than 5% deviation in ultimate load predictions while accurately predicting stress distributions and failure modes. FE parametric analysis showed that increasing the grid thickness and decreasing the grid spacing within a reasonable range can considerably enhance the localized compression performance. The proposed analytical model, based on Winkler elastic foundation theory, predicts ultimate compression capacities within 10% of both the experimental and numerical results. However, the GFRP grid strength adjustment factor βg should be further refined through additional experiments and numerical analyses to improve reliability. Full article
