In individuals exposed to relatively mild methylmercury, even if they appeared to be independent in activities of daily living (ADL), slower judgment and motor responses in daily activities were observed, suggesting potential cognitive impairment. To quantitatively assess this impairment, we measured reaction time (RT) in a visual search test, as a visual cognitive ability test. The study participants included 24 residents from contaminated areas with sensory impairments in the limbs but no visual field defects (E group), as well as 12 individuals from non-contaminated areas (Group C). The 24 participants from contaminated areas were further divided into two groups: 12 without hand motor coordination disorders (Group E-HA) and 12 with such disorders (Group E+HA). Participants were instructed to search for the target letter “Z” on a computer screen, and the visual stimuli consisted of two, six, or ten alphabet letters. An equal number of trials contained “Z” and did not contain “Z,” for a total of thirty trials, which were conducted twice. RT was significantly longer in Group E+HA, followed by Group E-HA, and then Group C. However, in the second test, RT decreased in all cases, with a greater reduction in the exposed groups compared to the control group. These results suggest that methylmercury exposure may cause cognitive impairment, yet it also possesses plasticity. Full article

In modern medical education, a robust understanding of statistics is essential for fostering critical thinking, informed clinical decision-making, and effective communication. This paper explores the synergistic value of early and continued statistical education for medical students and residents, particularly in relation to the expanding field of sports supplementation and its impact on athletic performance. Early exposure to statistical principles enhances students’ ability to interpret clinical research, avoid cognitive biases, and engage in evidence-based practice. Continued statistical learning throughout residency further refines these competencies, enabling more sophisticated analysis and application of emerging data. The paper also addresses key challenges in integrating statistics into medical curricula—such as limited curricular space, student disengagement, and resource constraints—and proposes solutions including interactive learning, case-based teaching, and the use of public datasets. A unique emphasis is placed on connecting statistical literacy to the interpretation of research in sports science, particularly regarding the efficacy, safety, and ethical considerations of sports supplements. By linking statistical education to a dynamic and relatable domain like sports performance, educators can not only enrich learning outcomes but also foster lasting interest and competence in quantitative reasoning. This integrated approach holds promise for producing more analytically proficient and clinically capable physicians. Full article

This study conducts a systematic qualitative review of empirical research on sense of place within housing contexts, employing the tripartite model of place identity, place attachment, and place dependence. The study employs an expanded model that captures the internal complexity of each indicator by integrating its cognitive, affective, and conative components, which represent the dimensions of human–place interaction. This model conceptualizes sense of place as a multidimensional construct, facilitating thematic synthesis and cross-study comparisons. A structured search of Scopus and Web of Science identified 10 studies that met predefined inclusion criteria. Additionally, eight studies with divergent conceptualizations of sense of place were narratively analyzed to explore the diversity of interpretations across disciplinary perspectives in housing research. The review yields three key findings: (1) The expanded tripartite model provides a framework for understanding the relationships between residents and housing. (2) Sense of place is both a criterion and a catalyst for housing sustainability. (3) The development of a sense of place is influenced by the interaction of physical, spatial, environmental, social, cultural, economic, and institutional housing factors. Sense of place provides insight into how housing becomes home, informing context-dependent strategies that enhance place-based connections and contribute to housing sustainability. Full article

Promoting municipal solid waste (MSW) sorting is critical to advancing sustainable and low-carbon urban development. While existing research often focuses separately on external policy tools or internal behavioral drivers, limited attention has been given to their joint effects within an integrated framework. This study addresses this gap by analyzing micro-survey data from 1983 residents across 34 prefecture-level and above cities in China, using a bivariate probit model to examine how policy tools and policy perception—both independently and interactively—shape residents’ active and passive compliance with MSW sorting policies. The findings reveal five key insights. First, the adoption and spatial distribution of policy tools are uneven: environment-type tools dominate, supply-type tools are moderately deployed, and demand-type tools are underutilized. Second, both policy tools and policy perception significantly promote compliance behaviors, with policy cognition exerting the strongest effect. Third, differential effects are observed—policy cognition primarily drives active compliance, whereas policy acceptance more strongly predicts passive compliance. Fourth, synergistic effects emerge when supply-type tools are combined with environment-type or demand-type tools. Finally, policy perception not only directly enhances compliance but also moderates the effectiveness of policy tools, with notable heterogeneity among residents with higher cognitive or emotional alignment. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of compliance mechanisms and offer practical implications for designing perception-sensitive and regionally adaptive MSW governance strategies. Background and Objectives: General-purpose multimodal large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for medical image interpretation despite lacking clinical validation. This study evaluates the diagnostic reliability of ChatGPT-4o and Claude 2 in photographic assessment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) against radiological standards. This study examines two critical questions: whether families can derive reliable preliminary assessments from LLMs through analysis of clinical photographs and whether LLMs exhibit cognitive fidelity in their visuospatial reasoning capabilities for AIS assessment. Materials and Methods: A prospective diagnostic accuracy study (STARD-compliant) analyzed 97 adolescents (74 with AIS and 23 with postural asymmetry). Standardized clinical photographs (nine views/patient) were assessed by two LLMs and two orthopedic residents against reference radiological measurements. Primary outcomes included diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity/specificity), Cobb angle concordance (Lin’s CCC), inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s κ), and measurement agreement (Bland–Altman LoA). Results: The LLMs exhibited hazardous diagnostic inaccuracy: ChatGPT misclassified all non-AIS cases (specificity 0% [95% CI: 0.0–14.8]), while Claude 2 generated 78.3% false positives. Systematic measurement errors exceeded clinical tolerance: ChatGPT overestimated thoracic curves by +10.74° (LoA: −21.45° to +42.92°), exceeding tolerance by >800%. Both LLMs showed inverse biomechanical concordance in thoracolumbar curves (CCC ≤ −0.106). Inter-rater reliability fell below random chance (ChatGPT κ = −0.039). Universal proportional bias (slopes ≈ −1.0) caused severe curve underestimation (e.g., 10–15° error for 50° deformities). Human evaluators demonstrated superior bias control (0.3–2.8° vs. 2.6–10.7°) but suboptimal specificity (21.7–26.1%) and hazardous lumbar concordance (CCC: −0.123). Conclusions: General-purpose LLMs demonstrate clinically unacceptable inaccuracy in photographic AIS assessment, contraindicating clinical deployment. Catastrophic false positives, systematic measurement errors exceeding tolerance by 480–1074%, and inverse diagnostic concordance necessitate urgent regulatory safeguards under frameworks like the EU AI Act. Neither LLMs nor photographic human assessment achieve reliability thresholds for standalone screening, mandating domain-specific algorithm development and integration of 3D modalities. Full article

Background: Electronic waste (e-waste) recycling in informal settings like Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana, releases toxic metals into the environment, posing serious health risks to nearby residents, particularly children. This study assessed the body burdens of lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and arsenic (As) and their association with cognitive function in schoolchildren living within 1 km of the Agbogbloshie site. Method: A cross-sectional study involving 56 pupils collected demographic data and blood and urine samples and administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). Blood was tested for Pb and Mn and urine for Cd, Cr, Ni, and As. Associations between metal levels and cognitive outcomes were examined using regression analyses, adjusting for confounders. Result: Children showed elevated metal levels, with mean blood Pb of 60.43 µg/L and urinary s of 21.50 µg/L. Symptoms of cognitive dysfunction were common: 75% reported confusion, 67.9% poor memory, and 66% poor concentration. Urinary Cr levels were significantly associated with lower Full-Scale IQ (β = −18.42, p < 0.05) and increased difficulty in decision-making (OR = 0.1, p < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings underscore the neurodevelopmental risks of heavy metal exposure from e-waste in low- and middle-income countries and call for urgent public health interventions and policy actions. The research is grounded in the perspective of urban historical landscape (HUL), exploring the connections between cultural heritage and a broader urban context, as well as the general public and communities. It also focuses on small cultural heritage sites (SCHSs) in urban areas that have been overlooked in previous studies. By integrating various types of data, an assessment framework and methodology comprising six dimensions and 24 indicators were established and applied to the empirical research of 30 SCHSs in the Beijing section of the Grand Canal. The empirical research demonstrated the operability, effectiveness, and flexibility of the HUL assessment for SCHSs. The research findings are as follows. (1) The method provides differentiated recommendations for the formulation of tailored policies and planning management schemes based on heritage types, conservation levels, and the urban districts in which they are located. (2) The comprehensive quality of the open spaces where SCHSs are situated is critical for the cognition of the general public and community residents. (3) The overall conservation of the community areas containing SCHSs is highly significant, and the linkage between social development levels and cultural resources enhances public cognition of the SCHSs. (4) Cluster analysis offers guidance for the refined improvement of different SCHSs. The research aims to establish an action-oriented assessment framework, with a dimensional framework responding to the requirements of HULs and allowing for indicator flexibility. This study is significant for supporting the conservation and utilization of SCHSs in urban areas and for promoting their sustainable development. Full article

The willingness to pay (WTP) for green energy consumption not only indicates the public’s green energy consumption practices, but also affects the realization of China’s “dual carbon” goals and global green development. Based on data from the 2018 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this study describes the WTP for green energy consumption of Chinese urban and rural residents in the context of “dual carbon”. Moreover, it provides an in-depth interpretation from the perspectives of capital endowment and energy cognition, guided by social practice theory (SPT). This study found that, firstly, the public’s WTP for green energy consumption needs to be strengthened urgently, and the percentage of the refusal to participate group reaches 41.44%, and shows significant urban–rural differences. Compared with rural residents, the proportion and amount of WTP for urban residents are 7.5% and 4.016 CNY/month higher, respectively. Secondly, capital endowment and energy cognition are important influencing factors. Among them, economic capital (β = 0.647, p < 0.01) and cultural capital (β = 0.358, p < 0.05) play a significant role for urban residents, while rural residents depend on the government support cognition of energy (β = 7.678, p < 0.001). Finally, the urban–rural divergence in WTP for green energy consumption mainly stems from the gap in capital endowment, which contributes 29.08%, significantly higher than the contribution of energy cognition (8.34%). Therefore, efforts should be made to enhance the capital endowment levels of urban and rural residents, implement a targeted energy knowledge dissemination system, build a comprehensive government support system, and break down institutional barriers through urban–rural integration to guard against the disadvantages of rural residents. Amid the accelerating processes of modernization and commercialization, traditional rural public spaces are increasingly losing their cultural value and social functions. This study investigates the transformative role of art intervention in enhancing the quality and cultural significance of rural public spaces, with a focus on Machang Village in Tengchong, China. The study first develops a conceptual model to explore the causal relationships and pathways between these influencing factors. Drawing on this framework, the research then uses Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to empirically test a multi-dimensional resident satisfaction model that incorporates spatial aesthetics, functional suitability, historical-cultural identity, and emotional cognition. Through field surveys and data collected from 224 residents, the study reveals that cultural emotions and functional completeness are the most influential factors in driving overall satisfaction. Artistic innovation and aesthetics contribute moderately, indicating that visual creativity alone is insufficient without deeper cultural integration and functional coherence. The findings suggest a dual-pathway satisfaction mechanism, where both symbolic emotional resonance and practical usability shape residents’ perceptions of public space quality. The study offers theoretical and practical insights into optimizing rural public space design, advocating for art-led, community-engaged, and culturally embedded approaches to rural revitalization. Background/Objectives: Childhood anemia remains a serious public health issue, negatively affecting cognitive and psychomotor development, with repercussions on school performance and adult productivity. This study aimed to characterize the profile of children aged 6 months to 5 years diagnosed with or at risk of anemia who attended a pediatric hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. Methods: A hospital-based, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from September 2023 to September 2024. Descriptive statistics, including frequency distributions and cross-tabulations, summarized participant characteristics and key variables. Results: We observed that 33.3% (74/222) of the children were either anemic or at risk of anemia. Among these, 93.2% (69/74) were confirmed anemic or at risk based on hemoglobin levels. Five children (6.8%) had normal hemoglobin but abnormal red-cell indices, with microcytic (60.0%; 3/5) or normocytic (40.0%; 2/5) patterns. Anemia rates were higher in males (55.1%), children aged 24–59 months, those residing in the Metropolitan Lisbon Area (82.6%), children whose caregivers had only basic or secondary education (58.0%), and those whose mothers were born in foreign countries (48.4%). Microcytic red-cell indices were observed in 63.1% of cases. Serum iron results indicated that 32.0% were pre-anemic and 40.0% anemic. Ferritin levels showed iron-deficiency anemia in 22.2% of tested cases. In addition, 33.3% carried the sickle cell trait, and 35.0% had elevated C-reactive protein, suggesting anemia of inflammation. Conclusions: Anemia is a moderate public health issue, mainly affecting children with less-educated caregivers and migrant mothers. Targeted public health actions, including systematic screening, caregiver education, and multiculturally sensitive interventions, are crucial to address anemia. Full article

This paper focuses on the social effect assessment of the ecological governance of Poyang Lake wetland in Jiangxi Province. By distributing 1098 valid questionnaires to the surrounding residents and collecting them, this paper deeply explores the feedback on residents’ satisfaction and recognition regarding the effectiveness of wetland governance measures. Through the comprehensive use of the Order Logit model and descriptive statistical methods such as the mean and standard deviation, this paper deeply discusses the impact of the ecological management measures of Poyang Lake wetland on residents’ life quality, environmental protection awareness, and community well-being. The study found that the wetland ecological management project was widely praised, and the overall satisfaction of residents was as high as 87.5%, reflecting a significant social effect. Further analysis revealed that satisfaction was affected by multiple factors, including age, education, quality of life (including increased leisure and recreational space and enhanced regional identity), and improvement in environmental quality (including increased bird species diversity, improved water and air quality, and improved infrastructure). Residents’ cognition of wetland function is multi-dimensional and profound, but they still need to strengthen standard science education in deep-level ecological functions such as species protection. Based on the research conclusion, three policy suggestions are proposed: first, the government should strengthen ecological education and enhance the public awareness of environmental protection; second, the government should pay attention to the win–win of ecology and people’s livelihoods and promote the harmonious coexistence of wetland protection and community development; and third, the government should improve the relevant infrastructure, strengthen environmental protection facilities, scientific research monitoring and legal construction, and lay a solid foundation for the sustainable protection and utilization of wetland resources. Game-Based Approaches (GBAs) to teaching and learning in physical education and sport pedagogy, such as Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU), were initially developed in response to secondary school physical education (PE) students’ difficulties in applying this technique within context. The early noughties experienced a significant body of work highlighting the benefits of adopting GBAs such as TGfU across physical education and sport pedagogy contexts. A theme residing in much of this work was understanding TGfU through the lens of social constructivism to the point whereby it seemed this was the only lens through which to consider how learning might happen through TGfU and/or related approaches. However, the exclusive alignment between TGfU and social constructivism is not heavily research-informed and/or evidence-supported, and it seems timely to question if other learning theories from cognitive science might help researchers and practitioners understand the benefits of applying a TGfU approach in teaching and coaching. At this stage, there is a relative lack of research on the tourism support behavior impacts of residents in health and wellness tourism. This study examines the effects of residents’ perceived tourism impacts and perceived justice on tourism support behaviors and explores the mediating role of affect and the moderating role of active health. Using the “cognitive-affective-behavioral” theory as a framework, this study conducted structural equation modeling on a sample of 500 residents in the BDH Life and Health Industry Innovation Demonstration Zone. It was found that the relationship between residents’ perceived benefits, distributional justice and procedural justice, and tourism support behaviors was positive, while the relationship between perceived costs and tourism support behaviors was negative; that positive affect played a mediating role between residents’ cognitive dimensions and tourism support behavior; and that active health played a moderating role between residents’ cognitive dimensions and tourism support behaviors. This study further enriches the theoretical research related to health and wellness tourism by exploring the role mechanism between the cognition and behavior of residents in health and wellness tourism destinations. It provides a theoretical basis for the comprehensive development of health and wellness tourism and the sustainable development of tourism destinations. Full article

The aging population has posed significant challenges to the built environment (BE) in urban residential areas, particularly in addressing older adults’ activity and health needs. Understanding how the BE influences older adults’ activity and health is crucial for promoting active and healthy aging. This study explored the interactions among the BE, self-efficacy (SE), activity engagement (AE), and self-rated health (SH) for older adults in urban residential areas. A random sampling technique selected 372 older adults residing in urban residential areas to participate in the questionnaire survey. Spearman correlation and hierarchical regression analysis were used to develop the BE-SE-AE-SH model for older people based on social cognitive theory. Accessibility, land use mix, and street connectivity affect activity engagement by influencing older persons’ walking and self-care abilities. Land use mix discourages walking ability and activity engagement, while esthetics encourages activity engagement. Land use mix, street connectivity, transportation, walking ability, self-care ability, and activity engagement enhance older adults’ self-rated health. Practical recommendations for age-friendly urban residential areas include the following: (1) optimize elevators and footpaths; (2) decentralize small businesses and create multi-use parking; (3) shorten crossings and enhance pavements; (4) add natural and humanistic elements; (5) limit car speed and install traffic signals. Urban green spaces play a critical role in sustaining the urban park biodiversity. The relationship between biodiversity and city residents is complex. Understanding the cognitive preferences of residents toward biodiversity is vital for effective conservation. This study investigated the public willingness to protect the biodiversity in urban parks using questionnaire-based assessments and explored the underlying drivers. The study focused on the residents of Hangzhou, China, and analyzed the effects of respondent and visit characteristics as well as their interactions using ANOVA, PERMANOVA, GLM, and NMDS. The visitor age, education level, satisfaction with plant landscapes, and visit frequency significantly influenced their willingness to conserve. Based on a “cognitive-experience-investment” framework, we uncovered (1) positive synergistic effects between urban park biodiversity and the abundance of urban green space fauna; (2) threshold constraints linking volunteer time for biodiversity conservation and economic expenditures on biodiversity-friendly products; and (3) the complex interactions among these factors. The findings not only elucidate the driving mechanisms and model optimization pathways associated with public willingness for conserving urban biodiversity but also provide actionable strategies to promote both ecological conservation and societal wellbeing.
