Visual Search Test for Residents Chronically Exposed to Methylmercury in the Minamata Area
Highlights
- We found that individuals who are chronically exposed to low levels of methyl-mercury and have sensory disturbances in the limbs, but no visual field con-striction or upper limb ataxia, exhibit mild impairments in visual cognition, judgment, and executive function.
- We confirmed that these mild impairments can be partially recovered through repetitive practice, though not completely.
- This study demonstrated that reaction time measurements using more complex tasks are useful for detecting mild cognitive abnormalities caused by toxic sub-stances.
- The results of this study suggest that the effects of central nervous system damage caused by exposure to low levels of methylmercury may improve with learning, indicating plasticity.
