To improve collision risk prediction in high-traffic coastal waters and support real-time decision-making in maritime navigation, this study proposes a regional collision risk prediction system integrating the Computed Distance at Collision (CDC) method with an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). Unlike Distance at Closest Point of Approach (DCPA), which depends on the position of Global Positioning System (GPS) antennas, Computed Distance at Collision (CDC) directly reflects the actual hull shape and potential collision point. This enables a more realistic assessment of collision risk by accounting for the hull geometry and boundary conditions specific to different ship types. The system was designed and validated using ship motion simulations involving bulk and container ships across varying speeds and crossing angles. The CDC method was used to define collision, almost-collision, and near-collision situations based on geometric and hydrodynamic criteria. Subsequently, the FIS–CDC model was constructed using the ANFIS by learning patterns in collision time and distance under each condition. A total of four input variables—ship speed, crossing angle, remaining time, and remaining distance—were used to infer the collision risk index (CRI), allowing for a more nuanced and vessel-specific assessment than traditional CPA-based indicators. Simulation results show that the time to collision decreases with higher speeds and increases with wider crossing angles. The bulk carrier exhibited a wider collision-prone angle range and a greater sensitivity to speed changes than the container ship, highlighting differences in maneuverability and risk response. The proposed system demonstrated real-time applicability and accurate risk differentiation across scenarios. This research contributes to enhancing situational awareness and proactive risk mitigation in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) and Vessel Traffic System (VTS) environments. Future work will focus on real-time CDC optimization and extending the model to accommodate diverse ship types and encounter geometries. Full article

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental and social concern, particularly in Southeast Asia, where urban rivers serve as key pathways for transporting waste to marine environments. This scoping review examines 110 peer-reviewed studies to understand how plastic pollution in waterways is being researched, addressed, and reconceptualized. Drawing from the literature across environmental science, technology, and social studies, we identify four interconnected areas of focus: urban pollution pathways, innovations in monitoring and methods, community-based interventions, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Our analysis combines qualitative synthesis with visual mapping techniques, including keyword co-occurrence networks, to explore how real-time tools, such as IoT sensors, multi-sensor systems, and geospatial technologies, are transforming the ways plastic waste is tracked and analyzed. The review also considers the growing use of novel theoretical frameworks, such as post-phenomenology and ecological materialism, to better understand the role of plastics as both pollutants and ecological agents. Despite progress, the literature reveals persistent gaps in longitudinal studies, regional representation, and policy translation, particularly across the Global South. We emphasize the value of participatory models and community-led research in bridging these gaps and advancing more inclusive and responsive solutions. These insights inform the development of plastic tracker technologies currently being piloted in Vietnam and contribute to broader sustainability goals, including SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR) operations on underwater infrastructure remain costly and time-intensive because fully teleoperated remote operated vehicle s(ROVs) lack the range and dexterity necessary for precise cooperative underwater manipulation, and the alternative of using professional divers is ruled out due to the risk involved. This work presents and experimentally validates an autonomous, dual-I-AUV (Intervention–Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) system capable of assembling rigid pipeline segments through coordinated actions in a confined underwater workspace. The first I-AUV is a Girona 500 (4-DoF vehicle motion, pitch and roll stable) fitted with multiple payload cameras and a 6-DoF Reach Bravo 7 arm, giving the vehicle 10 total DoF. The second I-AUV is a BlueROV2 Heavy equipped with a Reach Alpha 5 arm, likewise yielding 10 DoF. The workflow comprises (i) detection and grasping of a coupler pipe section, (ii) synchronized teleoperation to an assembly start pose, and (iii) assembly using a kinematic controller that exploits the Girona 500’s full 10 DoF, while the BlueROV2 holds position and orientation to stabilize the workspace. Validation took place in a 12 m × 8 m × 5 m water tank. Results show that the paired I-AUVs can autonomously perform precision pipeline assembly in real water conditions, representing a significant step toward fully automated subsea construction and maintenance. Flocculants are indispensable in water and wastewater treatment, enabling the aggregation and removal of suspended particles, colloids, and emulsions. However, the conventional development and application of flocculants rely heavily on empirical methods, which are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and environmentally problematic due to issues such as sludge production and chemical residues. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have opened transformative avenues for the design, optimization, and intelligent application of flocculants. This review systematically examines the integration of ML into flocculant research, covering algorithmic approaches, data-driven structure–property modeling, high-throughput formulation screening, and smart process control. ML models—including random forests, neural networks, and Gaussian processes—have successfully predicted flocculation performance, guided synthesis optimization, and enabled real-time dosing control. Applications extend to both synthetic and bioflocculants, with ML facilitating strain engineering, fermentation yield prediction, and polymer degradability assessments. Furthermore, the convergence of ML with IoT, digital twins, and life cycle assessment tools has accelerated the transition toward sustainable, adaptive, and low-impact treatment technologies. Despite its potential, challenges remain in data standardization, model interpretability, and real-world implementation. This review concludes by outlining strategic pathways for future research, including the development of open datasets, hybrid physics–ML frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaborations. By leveraging ML, the next generation of flocculant systems can be more effective, environmentally benign, and intelligently controlled, contributing to global water sustainability goals. Aquatic biomass—ranging from fish scales and crustacean shells to various algae species—offers an abundant, renewable source for carbon dot (CD) synthesis, aligning with circular economy principles. This review highlights recent studies for valorizing aquatic biomass into high-performance carbon-based nanomaterials—specifically aquatic biomass-based carbon dots (AB-CDs)—briefly summarizing green synthesis approaches (e.g., hydrothermal carbonization, pyrolysis, and microwave-assisted treatments) that minimize environmental impact. Subsequent sections highlight the varied applications of AB-CDs, particularly in biosensing (including the detection of marine biotoxins), environmental monitoring of water pollutants, and drug delivery systems. Physically AB-CDs show unique optical and physicochemical properties—tunable fluorescence, high quantum yields, enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and surface bio-functionalization—that make them ideal for a wide array of applications. Overall, the discussion underlines the significance of this approach; indeed, transforming aquatic biomass into carbon dots can contribute to sustainable nanotechnology, offering eco-friendly solutions in sensing, environmental monitoring, and therapeutics. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are discussed to give a perspective of the potential of AB-CDs; the final aim is their integration into multifunctional, real-time monitoring and therapeutic systems—for sustainable nanotechnology innovations. The Solar Agro Savior (SAS) is an innovative solution that is assisted by drones for the sustainable utilization of water and plant disease observation in the agriculture sector. This system integrates an alerting mechanism for humidity, moisture, and temperature variations, which affect the plants’ health and optimization in water utilization, which enhances plant yield productivity. A significant feature of the system is the efficient monitoring system in a larger region through drones’ high-resolution cameras, which enables real-time, efficient response and alerting for environmental fluctuations to the authorities. The machine learning algorithm, particularly recurrent neural networks, which is a pioneer with agriculture and pest control, is incorporated for intelligent monitoring systems. The proposed system incorporates a specialized form of a recurrent neural network, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), which effectively addresses the vanishing gradient problem. It also utilizes an attention-based mechanism that enables the model to assign meaningful weights to the most important parts of the data sequence. This algorithm not only enhances water utilization efficiency but also boosts plant yield and strengthens pest control mechanisms. This system also provides sustainability through the re-utilization of water and the elimination of electric energy through solar panel systems for powering the inbuilt irrigation system. A comparative analysis of variant algorithms in the agriculture sector with a machine learning approach was also illustrated, and the proposed system yielded 99% yield accuracy, a 97.8% precision value, 98.4% recall, and a 98.4% F1 score value. By encompassing solar irrigation and artificial intelligence-driven analysis, the proposed algorithm, Solar Argo Savior, established a sustainable framework in the latest agricultural sectors and promoted sustainability to protect our environment and community. Monitoring and Analyzing Aquatic Vegetation Using Sentinel-2 Imagery Time Series: A Case Study in Chimaditida Shallow Lake in Greece

Aquatic vegetation plays a crucial role in freshwater ecosystems by providing habitats, regulating water quality, and supporting biodiversity. This study aims to monitor and analyze the dynamics of aquatic vegetation in Chimaditida Shallow Lake, Greece, using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, with validation from field measurements. Data processing was performed using Google Earth Engine and QGIS. The study focuses on discriminating and mapping two classes of aquatic surface conditions: areas covered with Floating and Emergent Aquatic Vegetation and open water, covering all seasons from 1 March 2024, to 28 February 2025. Spectral bands such as B04 (red), B08 (near infrared), B03 (green), and B11 (shortwave infrared) were used, along with indices like the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. The classification was enhanced using Otsu’s thresholding technique to distinguish accurately between Floating and Emergent Aquatic Vegetation and open water. Seasonal fluctuations were observed, with significant peaks in vegetation growth during the summer and autumn months, including a peak coverage of 2.08 km2 on 9 September 2024 and a low of 0.00068 km2 on 28 December 2024. These variations correspond to the seasonal growth patterns of Floating and Emergent Aquatic Vegetation, driven by temperature and nutrient availability. The study achieved a high overall classification accuracy of 89.31%, with producer accuracy for Floating and Emergent Aquatic Vegetation at 97.42% and user accuracy at 95.38%. Validation with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based aerial surveys showed a strong correlation (R2 = 0.88) between satellite-derived and field data, underscoring the reliability of Sentinel-2 for aquatic vegetation monitoring. Findings highlight the potential of satellite-based remote sensing to monitor vegetation health and dynamics, offering valuable insights for the management and conservation of freshwater ecosystems. The results are particularly useful for governmental authorities and natural park administrations, enabling near-real-time monitoring to mitigate the impacts of overgrowth on water quality, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. This methodology provides a cost-effective alternative for long-term environmental monitoring, especially in regions where traditional methods are impractical or costly. Full article

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a leading cause of acute viral hepatitis and is primarily transmitted via contaminated water and food. Groundwater may also serve as a potential vector for HEV transmission. This study aimed to optimize real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) for the detection of HEV, employing both TaqMan probe- and SYBR Green-based methods. A total of 12 primer sets for the TaqMan probe-based method and 41 primer sets for the SYBR Green-based method were evaluated in order to identify the optimal combinations. Primer sets #4 (TaqMan probe-based) and #21 (SYBR Green-based) demonstrated the highest sensitivity and specificity, successfully detecting HEV in artificially spiked samples at 1 fg/μL. The TaqMan probe-based method facilitated rapid detection with minimized non-specific amplification, whereas the SYBR Green-based method allowed for broader primer exploration by leveraging melting curve analysis. Despite the absence of HEV detection in 123 groundwater samples, this study underscores the value of real-time PCR for environmental monitoring and paves the way for enhanced diagnostic tools for public health applications. Synergistic Hierarchical AI Framework for USV Navigation: Closing the Loop Between Swin-Transformer Perception, T-ASTAR Planning, and Energy-Aware TD3 Control

Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) operations in complex ocean engineering scenarios necessitate robust navigation, guidance, and control technologies. These systems require reliable sensor-based object detection and efficient, safe, and energy-aware path planning. To address these multifaceted challenges, this paper proposes a novel synergistic AI framework. The framework integrates (1) a novel adaptation of the Swin-Transformer to generate a dense, semantic risk map from raw visual data, enabling the system to interpret ambiguous marine conditions like sun glare and choppy water, enabling real-time environmental understanding crucial for guidance; (2) a Transformer-enhanced A-star (T-ASTAR) algorithm with spatio-temporal attentional guidance to generate globally near-optimal and energy-aware static paths; (3) a domain-adapted TD3 agent featuring a novel energy-aware reward function that optimizes for USV hydrodynamic constraints, making it suitable for long-endurance missions tailored for USVs to perform dynamic local path optimization and real-time obstacle avoidance, forming a key control element; and (4) CUDA acceleration to meet the computational demands of real-time ocean engineering applications. Simulations and real-world data verify the framework’s superiority over benchmarks like A* and RRT, achieving 30% shorter routes, 70% fewer turns, 64.7% fewer dynamic collisions, and a 215-fold speed improvement in map generation via CUDA acceleration. This research underscores the importance of integrating powerful AI components within a hierarchical synergy, encompassing AI-based perception, hierarchical decision planning for guidance, and multi-stage optimal search algorithms for control. The proposed solution significantly advances USV autonomy, addressing critical ocean engineering challenges such as navigation in dynamic environments, object avoidance, and energy-constrained operations for unmanned maritime systems. The prevention and control of mine inrush water has always been a major challenge for safety. By identifying the type of water source and analyzing the real-time changes in water composition, sudden water inrush accidents can be monitored in a timely manner to avoid major accidents. This paper proposes a novel explainable machine learning model for source type identification of mine inrush water. The paper expands the original monitoring system into the XinJi No.2 Mine in Huainan Mining Area. Based on the online water composition data, using the Spearman coefficient formula, it analyzes the water chemical characteristics of different aquifers to extract key discriminant factors. Then, the Conv1D-GRU model was built to deeply connect factors for precise water source identification. The experimental results show an accuracy rate of 85.37%. In addition, focused on the interpretability, the experiment quantified the impact of different features on the model using SHAP (Shapley Additive Explanations). It provides new reference for the source type identification of mine inrush water in mine disaster prevention and control. Full article

This paper presents a cloud-based architecture for the acquisition, transmission, and processing of acoustic data from hydrophone arrays, designed to enable the detection and monitoring of both surface and underwater vehicles. The proposed system offers a modular and scalable cloud infrastructure that supports real-time and distributed processing of hydrophone data collected in diverse aquatic environments. Acoustic signals captured by heterogeneous hydrophones—featuring varying sensitivity and bandwidth—are streamed to the cloud, where several machine learning algorithms can be deployed to extract distinguishing acoustic signatures from vessel engines and propellers in interaction with water. The architecture leverages cloud-based services for data ingestion, processing, and storage, facilitating robust vehicle detection and localization through propagation modeling and multi-array geometric configurations. Experimental validation demonstrates the system’s effectiveness in handling high-volume acoustic data streams while maintaining low-latency processing. The proposed approach highlights the potential of cloud technologies to deliver scalable, resilient, and adaptive acoustic sensing platforms for applications in maritime traffic monitoring, harbor security, and environmental surveillance. The synergistic development of low-permeability reservoirs such as deep coalbed methane (CBM) and tight gas has emerged as a key technology to reduce development costs, enhance single-well productivity, and improve gas recovery. However, due to fundamental differences between coal seams and tight sandstones in their pore structure, permeability, water saturation, and pressure sensitivity, significant variations exist in their flow capacities and fluid production behaviors. To address the challenges of production allocation and main reservoir identification in the co-development of CBM and tight gas within deep gas-bearing basins, this study employs the transient multiphase flow simulation software OLGA to construct a representative dual-gas co-production well model. The regulatory mechanisms of the gas–liquid distribution, deliquification efficiency, and interlayer interference under two typical vertical stacking relationships—“coal over sand” and “sand over coal”—are systematically analyzed with respect to different tubing setting depths. A high-precision dynamic production allocation method is proposed, which couples the wellbore structure with real-time monitoring parameters. The results demonstrate that positioning the tubing near the bottom of both reservoirs significantly enhances the deliquification efficiency and bottomhole pressure differential, reduces the liquid holdup in the wellbore, and improves the synergistic productivity of the dual-reservoirs, achieving optimal drainage and production performance. Building upon this, a physically constrained model integrating real-time monitoring data—such as the gas and liquid production from tubing and casing, wellhead pressures, and other parameters—is established. Specifically, the model is built upon fundamental physical constraints, including mass conservation and the pressure equilibrium, to logically model the flow paths and phase distribution behaviors of the gas–liquid two-phase flow. This enables the accurate derivation of the respective contributions of each reservoir interval and dynamic production allocation without the need for downhole logging. Validation results show that the proposed method reliably reconstructs reservoir contribution rates under various operational conditions and wellbore configurations. Through a comparison of calculated and simulated results, the maximum relative error occurs during abrupt changes in the production capacity, approximately 6.37%, while for most time periods, the error remains within 1%, with an average error of 0.49% throughout the process. These results substantially improve the timeliness and accuracy of the reservoir identification. This study offers a novel approach for the co-optimization of complex multi-reservoir gas fields, enriching the theoretical framework of dual-gas co-production and providing technically adaptive solutions and engineering guidance for multilayer unconventional gas exploitation. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), especially iron oxide (Fe3O4), display distinctive superparamagnetic characteristics and elevated surface-area-to-volume ratios, facilitating improved physicochemical interactions with solutes and pollutants. These characteristics make MNPs strong contenders for use in water treatment applications. This research investigates the application of iron oxide MNPs synthesized via co-precipitation as innovative draw solutes in forward osmosis (FO) for treating synthetic produced water (SPW). The FO membrane underwent surface modification with sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), a zwitterionic polymer, to increase hydrophilicity, minimize fouling, and elevate water flux. The SBMA functional groups aid in electrostatic repulsion of organic and inorganic contaminants, simultaneously encouraging robust hydration layers that improve water permeability. This adjustment is vital for sustaining consistent flux performance while functioning with MNP-based draw solutions. Material analysis through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) verified the MNPs’ thermal stability, consistent morphology, and modified surface chemistry. The FO experiments showed a distinct relationship between MNP concentration and osmotic efficiency. At an MNP dosage of 10 g/L, the peak real-time flux was observed at around 3.5–4.0 L/m2·h. After magnetic regeneration, 7.8 g of retrieved MNPs generated a steady flow of ~2.8 L/m2·h, whereas a subsequent regeneration (4.06 g) resulted in ~1.5 L/m2·h, demonstrating partial preservation of osmotic driving capability. Post-FO draw solutions, after filtration, exhibited total dissolved solids (TDS) measurements that varied from 2.5 mg/L (0 g/L MNP) to 227.1 mg/L (10 g/L MNP), further validating the effective dispersion and solute contribution of MNPs. The TDS of regenerated MNP solutions stayed similar to that of their fresh versions, indicating minimal loss of solute activity during the recycling process. The combined synergistic application of SBMA-modified FO membranes and regenerable MNP draw solutes showcases an effective and sustainable method for treating produced water, providing excellent water recovery, consistent operational stability, and opportunities for cyclic reuse. The efficiency decline of Francis turbines, a key component of hydroelectric power generation, presents a multifaceted challenge influenced by interconnected factors such as water quality, incidence angle, erosion, and runner wear. This paper is structured into two main sections to address these issues. The first section applies the Buckingham π theorem to establish a dimensional analysis (DA) framework, providing insights into the relationships among the operational variables and their impact on turbine wear and efficiency loss. Dimensional analysis offers a theoretical basis for understanding the relationships among operational variables and efficiency within the scope of this study. This understanding, in turn, informs the selection and interpretation of features for machine learning (ML) models aimed at the predictive maintenance of the target variable and important features for the next stage. The second section analyzes an extensive dataset collected from a Francis turbine in Colombia, a country that is heavily reliant on hydroelectric power. The dataset consisted of 60,501 samples recorded over 15 days, offering a robust basis for assessing turbine behavior under real-world operating conditions. An exploratory data analysis (EDA) was conducted by integrating linear regression and a time-series analysis to investigate efficiency dynamics. Key variables, including power output, water flow rate, and operational time, were extracted and analyzed to identify patterns and correlations affecting turbine performance. This study seeks to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors driving Francis turbine efficiency loss and to propose strategies for mitigating wear-induced performance degradation. The synergy lies in DA’s ability to reduce dimensionality and identify meaningful features, which enhances the ML models’ interpretability, while ML leverages these features to model non-linear and time-dependent patterns that DA alone cannot address. This integrated approach results in a linear regression model with a performance (R2-Test = 0.994) and a time series using ARIMA with a performance (R2-Test = 0.999) that allows for the identification of better generalization, demonstrating the power of combining physical principles with advanced data analysis. The preliminary findings provide valuable insights into the dynamic interplay of operational parameters, contributing to the optimization of turbine operation, efficiency enhancement, and lifespan extension. Ultimately, this study supports the sustainability and economic viability of hydroelectric power generation by advancing tools for predictive maintenance and performance optimization. Full article

In-Line Monitoring of Milk Lactose for Evaluating Metabolic and Physiological Status in Early-Lactation Dairy Cows

Milk lactose concentration has been proposed as a noninvasive indicator of metabolic health in dairy cows, particularly during early lactation when metabolic demands are elevated. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between milk lactose levels and physiological, biochemical, and behavioral parameters in early-lactation Holstein cows. Twenty-eight clinically healthy cows were divided into two groups: Group 1 (milk lactose < 4.70%, n = 14) and Group 2 (milk lactose ≥ 4.70%, n = 14). Both groups were monitored over a 21-day period using the Brolis HerdLine in-line milk analyzer (Brolis Sensor Technology, Vilnius, Lithuania) and SmaXtec intraruminal boluses (SmaXtec Animal Care Technology®, Graz, Austria). Parameters including milk yield, milk composition (lactose, fat, protein, and fat-to-protein ratio), blood biomarkers, and behavior were recorded. Cows with higher milk lactose concentrations (≥4.70%) produced significantly more milk (+12.76%) and showed increased water intake (+15.44%), as well as elevated levels of urea (+21.63%), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (+22.96%), glucose (+4.75%), magnesium (+8.25%), and iron (+13.41%) compared to cows with lower lactose concentrations (<4.70%). A moderate positive correlation was found between milk lactose and urea levels (r = 0.429, p < 0.01), and low but significant correlations were observed with other indicators. These findings support the use of milk lactose concentration as a practical biomarker for assessing metabolic and physiological status in dairy cows, and highlight the value of integrating real-time monitoring technologies in precision livestock management.
