Dietary Strategies in the Prevention of MASLD: A Comprehensive Review of Dietary Patterns Against Fatty Liver

Understanding the components of the diet, food groups, and nutritional strategies that help prevent MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease) is essential for identifying dietary behaviors that can stop the progression of this condition, which currently affects over one-quarter of the global population. This review highlights the importance of including antioxidant nutrients in the diet, such as vitamins C and E, CoQ10, and polyphenolic compounds. It also emphasizes substances that support lipid metabolism, including choline, alpha-lipoic acid, and berberine. Among food groups, it is crucial to choose those that help prevent metabolic disturbances. Among carbohydrate-rich foods, vegetables, fruits, and high-fiber products are recommended. For protein sources, eggs, fish, and white meat are preferred. Among fat sources, plant oils and fatty fish are advised due to their content of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Various dietary strategies aimed at preventing MASLD should include elements of the Mediterranean diet or be personalized to provide anti-inflammatory compounds and substances that inhibit fat accumulation in liver cells. Other recommended dietary models include the DASH diet, the flexitarian diet, intermittent fasting, and diets that limit fructose and simple sugars. Additionally, supplementing the diet with spirulina or chlorella, berberine, probiotics, or omega-3 fatty acids, as well as drinking several cups of coffee per day, may be beneficial. Full article

The gross benefit of feeding multi-species probiotics has been reported, but the effect on the gut microbiota in pre-weaned dairy calves has not been elucidated. To address this gap, a randomized controlled trial was conducted in California, USA, to investigate the effect of feeding probiotics on the fecal microbiota of pre-weaned dairy calves. A total of 30 neonatal calves were randomly assigned to either the probiotic (PRO) or control (CON) treatment. Fecal samples were collected at four age timepoints: days 7, 14, 21, and 42. Fecal bacterial population was analyzed using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Differential abundance analysis was conducted to investigate the difference between the PRO and CON treatments, and diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves in each PRO and CON group. The PRO group had decreased Clostridium perfringens and Fusobacterium varium compared to the CON at 7 days of age. At 7 days of age, diarrheic calves in CON had more abundant F. varium compared to non-diarrheic calves, but there was no difference between diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves in the PRO group. In conclusion, probiotics administration decreased the population of pathogenic bacteria in feces from pre-weaned dairy calves on Day 7 of age. However, the treatment did not have an impact on bacterial diversity. These results suggest that the administration of probiotics has the potential to control gastrointestinal pathogens. Full article

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and cancer drive demand for therapeutic functional foods. This study developed freeze-dried fermented camel milk (FCM) with Ajwa date pulp (ADP), evaluating its physical and functional properties, probiotic survival, and potential benefits for diabetes and cancer. To achieve this target, six FCM formulations were prepared using ABT-5 starter culture (containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus thermophilus) with or without Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus B-1937 and ADP (12% or 15%). The samples were freeze-dried, and their functional properties, such as water activity, dispersibility, water absorption capacity, water absorption index, water solubility index, insolubility index, and sedimentation, were assessed. Reconstitution properties such as density, flowability, air content, porosity, loose bulk density, packed bulk density, particle density, carrier index, Hausner ratio, porosity, and density were examined. In addition, color and probiotic survivability under simulated gastrointestinal conditions were analyzed. Also, antidiabetic potential was assessed via α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition assays, while cytotoxicity was evaluated using the MTT assay on Caco-2 cells. The results show that ADP supplementation significantly improved dispersibility (up to 72.73% in FCM15D+L). These improvements are attributed to changes in particle size distribution and increased carbohydrate and mineral content, which facilitate powder rehydration and reduce clumping. All FCM variants demonstrated low water activity (0.196–0.226), indicating good potential for shelf stability. The reconstitution properties revealed that FCM powders with ADP had higher bulk and packed densities but lower particle density and porosity than controls. Including ADP reduced interstitial air and increased occluded air within the powders, which may minimize oxidation risks and improve packaging efficiency. ADP incorporation resulted in a significant decrease in lightness (L*) and increases in redness (a*) and yellowness (b*), with greater pigment and phenolic content at higher ADP levels. These changes reflect the natural colorants and browning reactions associated with ADP, leading to a more intense and visually distinct product. Probiotic survivability was higher in ADP-fortified samples, with L. acidophilus and B. bifidum showing resilience in intestinal conditions. The FCM15D+L formulation exhibited potent antidiabetic effects, with IC50 values of 111.43 μg mL−1 for α-amylase and 77.21 μg mL−1 for α-glucosidase activities, though lower than control FCM (8.37 and 10.74 μg mL−1, respectively). Cytotoxicity against Caco-2 cells was most potent in non-ADP samples (IC50: 82.22 μg mL−1 for FCM), suggesting ADP and L. rhamnosus may reduce antiproliferative effects due to proteolytic activity. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that ADP-enriched FCM is a promising functional food with enhanced probiotic viability, antidiabetic potential, and desirable physical properties. This work highlights the potential of camel milk and date synergies in combating some NCDs in vitro, suggesting potential for functional food application. Full article

The first few days following the birth are a vulnerable time for the neonate. Sick infants experience various interventions during their stay in the neonatal unit in order to stay alive and grow. Acquisition of gut microbes is critical for the short- and long-term health of the neonate. At a time when the gut microbiome is starting to take shape, crucial interventions directed at improving the growth, development and survival of the neonate impact its development. Events prior to and after the birth of the neonate, such as maternal conditions, antibiotic exposure, type of feeds, supplemental probiotics, and neonatal intensive care environment, contribute significantly to shaping the gut microbiome over the first few weeks and maintain its healthy balance crucial for long-term health. In this comprehensive review, we address common interventions the neonate is exposed to in its journey and their impact on gut microbiome, and discuss various interventions that minimize the dysbiosis of the gut. Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is highly prevalent in modern swine production, and many affected piglets survive past weaning and are raised for commercial pork production. This review summarizes the current understanding of the physiological challenges of IUGR piglets from a molecular perspective and evaluates recent advances in nutritional strategies aimed at mitigating their negative outcomes. Molecular approaches, including omics technologies and targeted analyses, have been employed to investigate the physiological characteristics of IUGR piglets. These approaches consistently show that IUGR piglets exhibit systemic dysfunction, including compromised gut health, increased inflammation and oxidative stress, and impaired function of multiple organs such as the intestine, liver, kidney, and immune-related tissues. Moreover, IUGR piglets often display poor muscle development and meat quality. The multifactorial nature of these issues suggests that targeting a single physiological parameter may be insufficient, and comprehensive interventions are needed to address the widespread effects of IUGR. Promising nutritional strategies such as supplementation with polyphenol-rich plant extracts, amino acids, and probiotics have demonstrated potential in improving gut integrity, beneficially modulating microbiota, and enhancing the overall health and performance of IUGR piglets. By supporting the systemic recovery of IUGR piglets, nutritional interventions could improve overall productivity in swine production systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), widely prescribed for anxiety disorders, may negatively impact the gut microbiota, contributing to dysbiosis. Considering the gut–brain axis’s importance in mental health, probiotics could represent an effective adjunctive strategy. This study evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 on microbiota composition, metabolic activity, and immune markers in fecal samples from patients with anxiety on SSRIs, using the SHIME® (Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem) model. Methods: The fecal microbiotas of four patients using sertraline or escitalopram were inoculated in SHIME® reactors simulating the ascending colon. After stabilization, a 14-day probiotic intervention was performed. Microbial composition was assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), ammonia, and GABA were measured, along with the prebiotic index (PI). Intestinal barrier integrity was evaluated via transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), and cytokine levels (IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α) were analyzed using a Caco-2/THP-1 co-culture system. The statistical design employed in this study for the analysis of prebiotic index, metabolites, intestinal barrier integrity and cytokines levels was a repeated measures ANOVA, complemented by post hoc Tukey’s tests to assess differences across treatment groups. For the 16S rRNA sequencing data, alpha diversity was assessed using multiple metrics, including the Shannon, Simpson, and Fisher indices to evaluate species diversity, and the Chao1 and ACE indices to estimate species richness. Beta diversity, which measures microbiota similarity across groups, was analyzed using weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances. To assess significant differences in beta diversity between groups, a permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) was performed using the Adonis test. Results: Probiotic supplementation increased Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, and decreased Klebsiella and Bacteroides. Beta diversity was significantly altered, while alpha diversity remained unchanged. SCFA levels increased after 7 days. Ammonia levels dropped, and PI values rose. TEER values indicated enhanced barrier integrity. IL-8 and TNF-α decreased, while IL-6 increased. GABA levels remained unchanged. Conclusions: The probiotic combination of Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 modulated gut microbiota composition, metabolic activity, and inflammatory responses in samples from individuals with anxiety on SSRIs, supporting its potential as an adjunctive strategy to mitigate antidepressant-associated dysbiosis. However, limitations—including the small pooled-donor sample, the absence of a healthy control group, and a lack of significant GABA modulation—should be considered when interpreting the findings. Although the SHIME® model is considered a gold standard for microbiota studies, further clinical trials are necessary to confirm these promising results. Full article

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encompasses several neurodevelopmental disorders, whose onset is correlated to genetic and environmental factors. Although the etiopathogenesis is not entirely clear, the involvement of inflammatory processes, the endocannabinoid system, and alterations in the permeability and composition of the intestinal microbiota are known to occur. Methods: This review systematically explores the literature available to date on the most widely used murine models for the study of ASD, the main biomarkers investigated for the diagnosis of ASD, and the therapeutic potential of probiotics, with a particular focus on the use of strains of Lactiplantibacillus (Lpb.) plantarum in in vivo models and clinical trials for ASD. Results: Several studies have demonstrated that targeting multifactorial biomarkers in animal models and patients contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the complex mechanisms underlying ASD. Moreover, accumulating evidence supports the beneficial effect of probiotics, including Lpb. plantarum, as a promising alternative therapeutic strategy, capable of modulating gut–brain axis communication. Conclusions: Probiotic supplementation, particularly with selected Lpb. plantarum strains, is emerging as a potential complementary approach for ameliorating ASD-related gastrointestinal and behavioral symptoms. However, further large-scale clinical studies are essential to validate their efficacy and determine optimal treatment protocols and dietary strategies. Full article

Background/Objectives: Green tripe (GRET) is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, and other nutrients and contains various beneficial microorganisms, including lactobacillus, along with feed components consumed by ruminants. Methods: In this study, Latilactobacillus sakei and L. curvatus were isolated from GRET and evaluated for their potential as probiotics, focusing on their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to modulate inflammatory responses. Results: When heat-killed L. sakei or L. curvatus (108 CFU/mL) and their metabolites (0.5 mg/mL) were applied to RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with LPS, nitric oxide (NO) production was reduced by approximately 10–35% and 2–11%, respectively. Furthermore, the expression levels of key anti-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-6, were suppressed by more than 5%. These effects were not due to cytotoxicity but instead due to genuine anti-inflammatory activity. In addition, both strains exhibited antioxidant activity, as demonstrated by their performance in ABTS and FRAP assays. Conclusions: These findings suggest that L. sakei and L. curvatus have significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, highlighting their potential as probiotics and prebiotics. Moreover, these newly isolated strains from GRET are expected to serve as valuable functional ingredients for developing health-promoting foods and dietary supplements. Full article

Probiotic supplementation in domestic cats has emerged as a promising non-pharmaceutical strategy to enhance gut health, immune function, and overall well-being. This review critically examines the current literature on probiotic use in feline health, highlighting evidence from studies involving both healthy and diseased cats. Probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacillus, Enterococcus, and Saccharomyces have demonstrated beneficial effects, including the modulation of the gut microbiota, a reduction in inflammation, and an improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms. Mechanistically, probiotics exert effects through microbial competition, the enhancement of epithelial barrier function, and immune modulation via cytokine and antimicrobial peptide regulation. Despite promising outcomes, limitations such as short study durations, small sample sizes, and narrow breed diversity constrain generalizability. Future research should prioritize long-term, multi-omics-integrated studies to elucidate mechanisms and optimize clinical application. Overall, probiotics offer a safe, functional dietary tool for improving feline health and may complement conventional veterinary care. Full article

Myocardial infarction (MI) is an inflammatory disease responsible for approximately 75% of sudden cardiac deaths. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the cardio-protective influence of microencapsulated probiotic and synbiotic dietary supplements in vivo and in molecular docking studies. MI was induced in rats with the injection of isoproterenol (i.p. 67 mg/kg). Plasma lipid profiles and the levels of oxidative stress markers, inflammatory markers, and cardiac enzymes were determined. The expression levels of MMP-7 and IL-1β in the heart muscle were measured. The impact of dietary supplements on fecal bacterial counts was evaluated across all rat groups. A histopathological examination of cardiac tissue was performed. The cardio-protective potential of cyanidin 3-diglucoside 5-glucoside and arabinoxylan was studied using molecular docking. The results demonstrate that all tested dietary supplements induced an improvement in all the biochemical parameters in association with an improvement in myocardial muscle tissue. The mRNA expression levels of MMP-7 and IL-1β were significantly downregulated by all dietary supplements. All dietary supplements increased the fecal counts of probiotic strains. In the molecular docking analysis, cyanidin 3-diglucoside 5-glucoside exhibited binding affinity values of −8.8 and −10 for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and Paraoxonase 1 (PON1), respectively. Arabinoxylan showed similar binding affinity (−8.8) for both LDH and PON1. Conclusion: Microencapsulated probiotic and synbiotic dietary supplements demonstrated notable cardio-protective influence in vivo and in molecular docking studies. These supplements may serve as promising candidates for the prevention of myocardial infarction. Full article

Salivary parameters—including unstimulated and stimulated flow rates and pH—were evaluated alongside oral microbiota profiles, including total bacterial load and selected periodontopathogens. Assessments were performed at baseline and post-intervention using sialometry, pH analysis, bacterial culture, and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Results: Sixty-one patients completed the study (31 in the probiotic group, 30 in the placebo group). Stimulated salivary flow increased significantly in the probiotic group (p = 0.0016), while unstimulated flow improved in both groups (p < 0.05). Salivary pH decreased significantly in the probiotic group (p = 0.0209); however, no intergroup differences were observed at the end of the intervention (p = 0.9839). qPCR showed significant reductions in total bacterial load (p = 0.0209) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (p = 0.0080). Culture confirmed the reduction of F. nucleatum (p = 0.0026), with a trend towards significance for total cultivable bacterial count (p = 0.0502). Conclusions: Daily supplementation with a probiotic combination may serve as a practical and well-tolerated adjunctive measure in clinical settings to improve salivary function and reduce key oral pathogens, particularly Fusobacterium nucleatum, in patients undergoing or recovering from radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. These findings support its potential integration into routine supportive care protocols to mitigate xerostomia and oral dysbiosis in this population. Full article

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are prevalent and interrelated conditions in older adults, both contributing to decreased quality of life and increased health risks. Nutritional interventions, including dietary changes and probiotic supplementation, may offer effective non-pharmacological strategies to address these conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of diet therapy alone and in combination with probiotics on quality of life and sleep apnea risk in older adults (>60 years) with MetS. Methods: In this controlled interventional study, 192 older adults with metabolic syndrome were assigned to one of three groups: control, diet therapy alone, or diet therapy plus probiotic supplementation. Participants were evaluated at baseline and after the intervention period using the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire and an apnea risk screening tool. Clinical and metabolic parameters, including BMI, HOMA index, and visceral fat, were also assessed. Results: Significant improvements in SF-36 scores were observed in both intervention groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05) (mean difference = −5.31, p = 0.016), with the diet + probiotics group showing the greatest enhancement. Participants who reduced their apnea risk also reported higher post-intervention SF-36 scores. The intervention led to reductions in visceral fat, inflammatory markers (CRP), and insulin resistance (HOMA index), which were correlated with improved quality of life. Conclusions: Integrated nutritional strategies, especially the combination of diet and probiotics, significantly improve quality of life and reduce apnea risk in older adults with metabolic syndrome. These findings support the use of personalized, non-pharmacological interventions targeting both metabolic health and sleep-related outcomes in geriatric populations. Full article

Allergy is recognized as a public health problem with pandemic consequences and is estimated to affect more than 50% of Europeans in 2025. Prebiotic and probiotic food implementation has recently emerged as an alternative strategy to promote immunomodulatory beneficial effects in allergic patients. Among prebiotics, Phaeophyceae algae represent a niche of research with enormous possibilities. The present study aims to evaluate the in vitro prebiotic potential of fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus, Macrocystis pyrifera, and Undaria pinnatifida algae, to promote the growth of Limosilactobacillus reuteri and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG as probiotic bacteria added to the formulation of a novel yogurt. Concentrations of fucoidan of 100 and 2000 µg/mL were added to reference growth media and kinetic growth curves for both microorganisms were fitted to the Gompertz equation. Optimized prebiotic conditions for fucoidan were selected to validate in vitro results by means of the formulation of a novel fermented prebiotic yogurt. Conventional yogurts (including Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subs. bulgaricus) were formulated with the different fucoidans, and production batches were prepared for L. rhamnosus and L. reuteri. Increased L. reuteri and L. rhamnosus populations in 1.7–2.2 log10 cycles just after 48 h of in vitro exposure were detected in fucoidan supplemented yogurt. M. pyrifera and U. pinnatifida fucoidans were the most effective ones (500 µg/mL) promoting probiotic growth in new formulated yogurts (during the complete shelf life of products, 28 days). Diet supplementation with fucoidan can be proposed as a strategy to modulate beneficial microbiota against allergy. Full article

Traditionally studied in isolation, the oral and gut microbiota are now being recognized as interconnected through anatomical and physiological pathways forming a dynamic “oral–gut microbiota axis”. Both oral and gut microbiota undergo changes with aging, characterized by a decline in microbial diversity and a shift toward potentially harmful species. The aim of this review is, therefore, to provide an overview of oral–gut communications in mediating frailty and sarcopenia. PubMed, EMBASE and Scopus databases were searched for relevant articles. We limited our search to manuscripts published in the English language. Interactions between oral and gut microbiota occur mainly through three pathways namely the enteral, the bloodstream and the fecal-oral routes. Alterations in the oral–gut microbiota axis contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation (i.e., “inflamm-ageing”) and mitochondrial dysfunction, key mechanisms underlying frailty and sarcopenia. Microbial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids and modified bile acids, appear to play an emerging role in influencing microbial homeostasis and muscle metabolism. Furthermore, poor oral health associated with microbial dysbiosis may contribute to altered eating patterns that negatively impact gut microbiota eubiosis, further exacerbating muscle decline and the degree of frailty. Strategies aimed at modulating the microbiota, such as healthy dietary patterns with reduced consumption of ultra-processed foods, refined carbohydrates and alcohol, ensuring an adequate protein intake combined with physical exercise, as well as supplementation with prebiotics, probiotics, and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, are increasingly recognized as promising interventions to improve both oral and gut microbiota health, with beneficial effects on frailty and sarcopenia. A better understanding of the oral–gut microbiota axis offers promising insights into nutritional interventions and therapeutic strategies for the age-related muscle decline, frailty and systemic health maintenance. This study aimed to evaluate whether probiotic administration could protect against cognitive impairments in a scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment mice model. Male C57BL/6 mice (8 weeks of age) were injected with scopolamine hydrobromide to induce memory impairments. The experimental groups were additionally supplemented with 109 colony-forming units (CFU)/day probiotics containing Lactobacillus helveticus CNU395 or L. paracasei CNU396. Behavioral test results and histopathological evaluations showed that the spatial memory ability and pathological tissue abnormalities of the mice in the CNU395 and CNU396 groups significantly improved compared with those in the disease group. CNU395 and CNU396 mitigated scopolamine-induced neuroinflammation by reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and TNF-α) and the NLRP3 inflammasome, through the inhibition of MAPK and NF-κB inflammatory pathways. Additionally, the CNU395 and CNU396 groups showed decreased levels of Iba-1 and Bax, alongside increased levels of BDNF and Bcl-2, relative to the disease group. Therefore, CNU395 or CNU396 supplementation might help prevent the onset of cognitive deficits and neuroinflammation. Full article
