Deliberate and Emergent Strategic Outcomes for High-Growth IT SME Business Models

For high-growth firms, designing and implementing strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of business models is a key priority. Although these strategies are carefully planned to achieve specific outcomes, these firms also encounter contextual factors inherent to entrepreneurship, as well as the potential negative consequences of operating as small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Consequently, they adapt emergent outcomes to secure positive scaling-up processes. A comprehensive analysis of 69 studies from 1978 to 2023 revealed that 34.8% used sales as the main indicator of high-growth outcomes, 18.8% considered employment to be the most important outcome, and 37.7% incorporated both. The assessment period for these studies spanned three to seven consecutive years. A subsequent review of the existing literature yielded 56 potential new outcomes, emphasising the existence of a diverse array of concepts and metrics with which to assess high-growth performance. The study confirmed sales and positive profits arising during the planning process as strategic outcomes. However, it was also demonstrated that geographical expansion and innovation become emergent outcomes in critical situations. The research also identified that external factors, including an adverse public environment, business context difficulties, and a favourable business environment, may influence the effect of the firm’s high growth. In recent decades, European countries have seen a substantial increase in home cultivation of cannabis. In France, the prevalence of cannabis use continues to increase despite its possession, sale, and cultivation being strictly illegal. The present study aimed to describe the profile and motivations of people in France who cultivate cannabis at home. We separately analyzed data from two convenience samples of people who use cannabis daily in France, based on two online cross-sectional surveys. In the first analysis (N = 3840), we used a multivariable logistic regression model to assess factors associated with home cultivation as the main source of cannabis supply. In the second analysis (N = 574), we described participants’ motivations for home cultivation and their cultivation patterns. In the two samples, 11% and 16% reported home cultivation as their main source of supply, respectively. Age, male gender, stable housing, living with a partner, consuming cannabis in herbal form, smoking joints with little or no tobacco, smoking cannabis from a bong or pipe, non-smoking modes of cannabis administration, and using cannabis exclusively for therapeutic reasons were all positively associated with home cultivation, while urban area of residence and at-risk alcohol use were negatively associated. The main reason reported for home cultivation was to manage quality. Few reported selling some of their crop, and most were self-sufficient. Finally, we interpret this practice as a personal response to cannabis prohibition and the unregulated market. Accordingly, possible harm reduction strategies are discussed. Full article

Advanced technologies, such as robotic process automation, blockchain, and machine learning, increase audit efficiency. Nonetheless, some Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) have not undergone digital transformation. This research aimed to develop a comprehensive framework for supreme audit institutions to adopt and integrate emerging technologies into their auditing processes using a hybrid theoretical approach based on the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) and TOE (Technology–Organisation–Environment) models. The framework was informed by insights from nineteen highly experienced experts in the field from eight countries. Through a two-round Delphi questionnaire, the experts provided valuable input on the key factors, challenges, and strategies for successful technology adoption by public sector audit organisations. The findings of this research reveal that technology adoption in SAIs starts with solid management support led by the chief technology officer. They must evaluate the IT infrastructure and readiness for advanced technologies, considering the budget and funding. Integrating solutions like the SAI of Ghana’s Audit Management Information System can significantly enhance audit efficiency. Continuous staff training is essential to build a positive attitude toward new technologies, covering areas like data algorithm auditing and big data analysis. Assessing the complexity and compatibility of new technologies ensures ease of use and cost-effectiveness. Continuous support from technology providers and monitoring advancements will keep SAIs aligned with technological developments, enhancing their auditing capabilities. Full article

A novel approach to managing domestic heating systems through IoT technologies is introduced in this paper. The system optimizes energy consumption by dynamically adapting to electricity and fuel price fluctuations while maintaining user comfort. Integrating smart devices significantly reduce energy costs and offer a favorable payback period, positioning the solution as both sustainable and economically viable. Efficient heating management is increasingly critical amid growing energy and environmental concerns. This strategy uses IoT devices to collect real-time data on prices, consumption, and user preferences. Based on this data, the system adjusts heating settings intelligently to balance comfort and cost savings. IoT connectivity manages continuous monitoring and dynamic optimization in response to changing conditions. This study includes a real-case comparison between a conventional central heating system and an IoT-managed electric radiator setup. By applying automation rules linked to energy pricing and user habits, the system enhances energy efficiency, especially in cold climates. The economic evaluation shows that using low-cost IoT devices yields meaningful savings and achieves equipment payback within approximately three years. The results demonstrate the system’s effectiveness, demonstrating that smart, adaptive heating solutions can cut energy expenses without sacrificing comfort, while offering environmental and financial benefits. Rabies is a fatal but entirely vaccine-preventable disease, with the highest risk in areas where free-roaming domestic dogs are prevalent. Understanding dog owners’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) is crucial for shaping effective rabies control strategies. This scoping review aimed to synthesize global evidence from studies evaluating dog owners’ KAP to identify behavioral factors relevant to rabies prevention and control. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, covering the period from 2012 to 2025. Seventy full-text articles were included based on predefined criteria. The findings reveal substantial gaps in dog owners’ knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors regarding rabies prevention. While general awareness of rabies is high among dog owners, their knowledge about transmission, clinical signs, and the fatal nature of the disease is inconsistent, with significant variability across studies. The vaccination uptake also varied widely across studies, ranging from less than 1% to over 90%, with no study reporting full coverage. Furthermore, a strong positive correlation was found between vaccination practice and the awareness of vaccine benefits (r = 0.69, p = 0.004). Common barriers to vaccination include lack of information, vaccine accessibility, distance to clinics, and personal constraints. These insights underscore the importance of early and targeted communication about vaccination campaigns. Future research should focus on periodically evaluating KAP before and after interventions to better inform rabies control efforts. Full article

Root pruning can promote the transplanting of young green plants, but the overall impact of pruning on root growth, morphology, and physiological functions remains unclear. This study integrated transcriptomics and physiological analyses to elucidate the effects of root pruning on blueberry growth. Appropriate pruning (CT4) significantly promoted plant growth, with above-ground biomass and leaf biomass significantly increasing compared to the control group within 42 days. Photosynthesis temporarily decreased at 7 days but recovered at 21 and 42 days. Transcriptomics analysis showed that the cellulose metabolism pathway was rapidly activated and influenced multiple key genes in the starch metabolism pathway. Importantly, transcription factors associated with vascular development were also significantly increased at 7, 21, and 42 days after root pruning, indicating their role in regulating vascular differentiation. Enhanced aboveground growth was positively correlated with the expression of photosynthesis-related genes, and the transport of photosynthetic products via vascular tissues provided a carbon source for root development. Thus, root development is closely related to leaf photosynthesis, and changes in gene expression associated with vascular tissue development directly influence root development, ultimately ensuring coordinated growth between aboveground and belowground parts. These findings provide a theoretical basis for optimizing root pruning strategies to enhance blueberry growth and yield. Full article

Association of Comorbidities with Adverse Outcomes in Adults Hospitalized with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infection: A Retrospective Cohort Study from Switzerland (2022–2024)

Introduction: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection causes seasonal respiratory illness in both children and adults, with increasing recognition of its impact in older adults with chronic comorbidities. This study aimed to characterize adult patients hospitalized with RSV infection in Switzerland and identify comorbidities linked to poor outcomes. Methods: Adults hospitalized with RSV infection between May 2022 and April 2024 at a Swiss public teaching hospital were included in this retrospective observational study. To assess the association between comorbidities and patient outcomes, separate multivariable regression analyses for each comorbidity, adjusted for age and sex, were performed. The primary composite endpoint was ’severe course’ (in-hospital death or intensive care unit (ICU) admission), secondary endpoints included in-hospital death, ICU admission, and length of stay. Results: Among 136 included patients (mean age 78, 38% male), 98% had comorbidities, most commonly cardiovascular (75.7%), respiratory (51%), and chronic kidney disease (CKD) (36.7%). Further, 18.4% experienced a severe course. The ICU admission rate was 14.0%, in-hospital mortality 6.6%, and the median hospital stay of survivors was 6 days (IQR 4–10). CKD was significantly associated with severe course (OR 2.64, p = 0.045) and in-hospital mortality (OR 11.6, p = 0.025), while immunosuppression predicted ICU admission (OR 5.7, p = 0.018). Length of stay was not linked to any comorbidities. Conclusions: In this cohort of hospitalized adults, mainly elderly individuals with chronic comorbidities were tested positive for RSV. CKD and immunosuppression were associated with severe course. Prevention strategies, including RSV vaccination, should prioritize these high-risk populations. Full article

Gasification of municipal solid waste and other biogenic residues (e.g., biomass and biowaste) is increasingly recognized as a promising thermochemical pathway for converting non-recyclable fractions into valuable energy carriers, with applications in electricity generation, district heating, hydrogen production, and synthetic fuels. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of major gasification technologies, including fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained flow, plasma, supercritical water, microwave-assisted, high-temperature steam, and rotary kiln systems. Key aspects such as feedstock compatibility, operating parameters, technology readiness level, and integration within circular economy frameworks are critically evaluated. A comparative assessment of incineration and pyrolysis highlights the environmental and energetic advantages of gasification. The valorization pathways for main product (syngas) and by-products (syngas, ash, tar, and biochar) are also explored, emphasizing their reuse in environmental, agricultural, and industrial applications. Despite progress, large-scale adoption in Europe is constrained by economic, legislative, and technical barriers. Future research should prioritize scaling emerging systems, optimizing by-product recovery, and improving integration with carbon capture and circular energy infrastructures. Supported by recent European policy frameworks, gasification is positioned to play a key role in sustainable waste-to-energy strategies, biomass valorization, and the transition to a low-emission economy. Strategies to interpret short-wave infrared hyperspectral images of rocks involve the application of analysis and classification steps that guide the extraction of geological and mineralogical information with the aim of creating mineral maps. Pre-existing strategies often rely on the use of statistical measures between reference and image spectra that are scene dependent. Therefore, classification thresholds based on statistical measures to create mineral maps are also scene dependent. This is problematic because thresholds must be adjusted between images to produce mineral maps of the same accuracy. We developed an innovative, knowledge-based strategy to perform mineralogical analyses and create classifications that overcome this problem by using physics-based wavelength positions of absorption features that are invariant between scenes as the main sources of mineral information. The strategy to interpret short-wave infrared hyperspectral images of rocks is implemented using the open source Hyperspectral Python package (HypPy) and demonstrated on a series of hyperspectral images of hydrothermally altered rock samples. The results show how expert knowledge can be embedded into a standardized processing chain to develop reproducible mineral maps without relying on statistical matching criteria. Full article

This paper investigates the complex relations between the Italian states, particularly Venice and Florence, and France at the beginning (c. 1560–1565) of the French Wars of Religion (c. 1560–1598). Focusing on the early years of the conflict, it highlights the “Italian” perception of France’s politico-religious upheavals and their profound implications for governance and state stability. Drawing on diplomatic correspondence and political reflections, the analysis reveals contrasting approaches among Venetian ambassadors: in particular, Giovanni Michiel advocated conciliatory policies to avert civil war, while Michele Suriano favored uncompromising anti-heresy measures. Niccolò Tornabuoni, serving as the Florentine ambassador in France, evolved from moderate criticism to a rigidly anti-Protestant position, mirroring Cosimo de’ Medici’s shift toward Counter-Reformation policies. This study situates these early reflections within the broader context of Venice’s internal tensions, marked by the diffusion of Reformation ideas and anti-papal currents, and Florence’s strategic alignment with Spain. It also underscores the role of these conflicts in shaping the politico-diplomatic strategies and reinforcing the perceived necessity of religious uniformity as a safeguard against political and social destabilization. The final part is directly linked to the sources and arguments as it contextualizes the diplomatic responses of Venetian and Florentine envoys within the broader political–religious transformations of the period. In an era where sustainable development is increasingly a core strategic issue for businesses, how top management, as the architects of corporate strategy, can achieve a synergy of economic, social, and environmental benefits through internal management mechanisms to promote corporate sustainability is a central focus for both academia and practice. This study aims to explore how Executive Cognitive Flexibility (CF) influences Firm Performance and to uncover the mediating effects of Non-market Strategy. We use panel data from Chinese A-share listed companies between 2016 and 2022 to examine and empirically analyze this mechanism. Our findings indicate that CF has a positive impact on Firm Performance. This relationship is realized through the pathway of Non-market Strategy, specifically manifesting as a reduction in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and an increase in Corporate Political Activity (CPA). Further analysis reveals that the impact of executive cognitive flexibility on firm performance is differentially influenced by internal and external environmental contexts. The findings of this study provide important practical insights and policy recommendations for companies on cultivating executive cognitive flexibility, optimizing non-market strategies, and enhancing firm performance in various internal and external environments. With the rapid digital transformation of healthcare services in India, this study investigates the factors influencing the behavioral shift from traditional hospital visits to e-health consultations. The primary objective was to analyze patient attitudes, satisfaction, and perceived barriers to adopting virtual healthcare, especially in urban and semi-urban settings. Methods: The methodology adopted in the study was descriptive, and a convenience sampling technique was used for data collection because the feasible times of the patients’ availabilities were taken into consideration for data collection. Both primary and secondary data were collected using questionnaires and literature. A sample size of 385 participants was used in this study. Various statistical tools, such as frequency, ANOVA, and Chi-square tests, were used to test the hypotheses. Results: It was observed from ANOVA and Chi-square tests that the factors for switching from traditional consultation to e-health services have a positive association. It was found that integrating data through influencing factors significantly (p < 0.001) improved decisions on e-health services. Conclusion: This study highlights the shift from in-person to e-health consultations driven by convenience, flexibility, and pandemic-related needs while acknowledging barriers such as digital literacy, infrastructure gaps, and trust issues. It recommends strategies, such as secure platforms, training, and integrated care models, for a more inclusive digital health future. Full article

Chromium slag sites pose severe environmental risks due to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contamination, characterized by high mobility and toxicity. This study focused on chromium-contaminated soil from a historical chromium slag site in North China, where long-term accumulation of chromate production residues has led to serious Cr(VI) pollution, with Cr(VI) accounting for 13–22% of total chromium and far exceeding national soil risk control standards. To elucidate Cr(VI) transformation mechanisms and elemental linkages, a combined approach of macro-scale condition experiments and micro-scale analysis was employed. Results showed that acidic conditions (pH < 7) significantly enhanced Cr(VI) reduction efficiency by promoting the conversion of CrO42− to HCrO4/Cr2O72−. Among reducing agents, FeSO4 exhibited the strongest effect (reduction efficiency >30%), followed by citric acid and fulvic acid. Temperature variations (−20 °C to 30 °C) had minimal impact on Cr(VI) transformation in the 45-day experiment, while soil moisture (20–25%) indirectly facilitated Cr(VI) reduction by enhancing the reduction of agent diffusion and microbial activity, though its effect was weaker than chemical interventions. Soil grain-size composition influenced Cr(VI) distribution unevenly: larger particles (>0.2 mm) in BC-35 and BC-36-4 acted as main Cr(VI) reservoirs due to accumulated Fe-Mn oxides, whereas BC-36-3 showed increased Cr(VI) in smaller particles (<0.074 mm). μ-XRF and correlation analysis revealed strong positive correlations between Cr and Ca, Fe, Mn, Ni (Pearson coefficient > 0.7, p < 0.01), attributed to adsorption–reduction coupling on iron-manganese oxide surfaces. In contrast, Cr showed weak correlations with Mg, Al, Si, and K. This study clarifies the complex factors governing Cr(VI) behavior in chromium slag soils, providing a scientific basis for remediation strategies such as pH adjustment (4–6) combined with FeSO4 addition to enhance Cr(VI) reduction efficiency. Investigating the Microstructural and Textural Properties of Cookies Using Plant-Based Bigel as an Alternative to Commercial Solid Fat

In response to the growing demand for improving the nutritional profile of widely consumed products, such as cookies, there has been an increasing interest in fat replacers that preserve sensory attributes and have a more positive health effect. Among the novel fat replacement strategies, the incorporation of bigels into food formulations has been studied; however, the impact of Arabic gum hydrogel-based bigels on microstructural properties and their correlation with the texture and quality of bakery products remains underexplored. In this study, cookies were formulated using a plant-based bigel (canola oil-carnauba wax oleogel mixed with Arabic gum hydrogel) as a fat substitute, and their microstructural, textural, and quality parameters were compared with those of commercial butter-based cookies. Compared to butter (firmness of 29,102 g, spreadability of 59,624 g∙s, and adhesiveness of 2282 g), bigel exhibited a softer (firmness of 576 g), more spreadable (spreadability of 457 g∙s), and less adhesive texture (adhesiveness of 136 g), while its rheological properties showed similar behavior but at a lower magnitude. Bigel exhibited high thermal stability and good elastic and thixotropic behaviors, indicating reversible structural breakdown and recovery. Cookies prepared with bigels instead of butter exhibited a similar proximate composition, with a slight increase in lipid content (11.7%). The physical dimensions and density were similar across the formulations. However, the microstructural analysis revealed differences when bigels were incorporated into cookies, reducing porosity (55%) and increasing the mean pore size (1781 µm); in contrast, mean wall thickness remained unaffected. Despite these structural modifications, the potential of bigels as viable and nutritionally enhanced substitutes for conventional fats in bakery products was demonstrated. Full article

The integration of Lesson Study (LS) and Didactic Suitability Criteria (DSC) presents an innovative framework for enhancing mathematics teacher training in higher education. This study examines how LS-DSC fosters instructional refinement, professional growth, and pedagogical transformation among in-service teachers. Using a quasi-experimental mixed-methods approach, the study analyzed data from 520 mathematics educators participating in a six-month training program incorporating collaborative lesson planning, structured pedagogical assessment, and reflective teaching practices. Findings indicate significant improvements in instructional design, mathematical discourse facilitation, and adaptive teaching strategies, with post-training evaluations demonstrating a strong positive correlation (r = 0.78) between initial competency levels and learning gains. Participants reported increased confidence in implementing student-centered methodologies and sustained engagement in peer collaboration beyond the training period. The results align with prior research emphasizing the effectiveness of lesson study models and structured evaluation frameworks in teacher professionalization. This study contributes to higher education policy and practice by advocating for the institutional adoption of LS-DSC methodologies to promote evidence-based professional development. Future research should explore the long-term scalability of LS-DSC in diverse educational contexts and its impact on student learning outcomes. Full article
