Background/Objectives: The present study aimed to examine the associations among achievement motivation, meaning in life, and well-being among video game players and to investigate differences between players with approach- and avoidance-oriented motivations. Methods: The sample consisted of 296 university students who reported playing video games (192 men and 104 women), aged 18 to 35 years (M = 22.62; SD = 2.64). Participants completed a battery of self-report measures, including the Achievement Goal Questionnaire, the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, and the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, administered anonymously. Results: Mediation analyses revealed that meaning in life was a significant mediator in the relationship between approach-oriented mastery goals and well-being (Ind = 0.07; 95% CI [0.02, 0.12]). However, no significant mediation effect was found for approach-oriented performance goals (Ind = 0.04; 95% CI [−0.01, 0.09]). Independent-samples t-tests indicated that participants with approach-oriented motivations reported significantly higher levels of meaning in life (t(294) = 4.44; p < 0.001), presence of meaning (t(294) = 5.74; p < 0.001), and well-being (t(294) = 5.52; p < 0.001) compared to those with avoidance-oriented motivations. Conclusions: The findings suggest that approach-oriented achievement motivations among players are positively associated with meaning in life and are indirectly associated with higher well-being, whereas avoidance-oriented motivations are associated with lower levels of well-being. These results carry potential implications for game design, education, and psychotherapy. Full article

Background. Extensive research confirms that hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle significantly influence female athletic performance, with profound implications for public health, including promoting equitable access to sports and enhancing women’s overall physical and mental well-being. Numerous scientifically validated methods are available to monitor hormonal status and menstrual cycle phases. However, our prior investigations revealed that these insights are rarely applied in practice due to the complexity and invasiveness of existing methods. This study examines the effects of hormonal fluctuations on elite female basketball players. It assesses practical, non-invasive, cost-effective, and field-applicable methods for hormonal monitoring, with a focus on cervical mucus analysis for estrogen crystallization. The goal is to optimize training, promote equity in women’s sports, and support public health strategies for female empowerment through sustained physical activity, addressing the limitations of male-centric training models. Materials and Methods. This exploratory field study employed a multifaceted approach, beginning with a comprehensive meta-analysis via literature searches on PubMed, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar to evaluate hormonal impacts on physical performance, supplemented by an expert survey of 20 sports scientists and coaches using Kendall’s concordance coefficient for reliability and an experimental phase involving 25 elite female Ukrainian basketball players assessed over three months through daily performance tests (e.g., sprints, jumps, agility drills, and shooting) integrated into six weekly training sessions, with cycle phases tracked via questionnaires, basal body temperature, and the fern leaf method for estrogen levels. Results. Performance peaked during the postmenstrual and post-ovulatory phases (e.g., a 7.5% increase in sprint time and a 5.1% improvement in running jump). It declined in the premenstrual phase (e.g., a 2.3% decrease in acceleration). The estrogen crystallization test using cervical mucus provided preliminary insights into hormonal status but was less precise than laboratory-based methods, such as LC-MS/MS, which remain impractical for routine use due to cost and complexity. The fern test and basal body temperature showed limited precision due to external factors. Conclusions. There is a critical need to develop simple, non-invasive, field-applicable devices for accurate, real-time hormonal monitoring. This will bridge the gap between research and practice, enhancing training personalization, equity in women’s fitness and sports, and public health outcomes by increasing female participation in physical activities, reducing gender-based health disparities, and fostering inclusive wellness programs. Background: Blind 5-A-side football is an intermittent sport that requires the development of specific physical, physiological, and technical–tactical variables, making the identification of recovery processes such as sleep, well-being, and athletes’ perceptions key factors in performance. However, to date, no systematic review has analyzed the scientific evidence on performance variables in players with visual impairments. Objective: To identify performance variables in blind 5-A-side football through the analysis of physical fitness factors, physiological demands, technical–tactical actions, and recovery variables. Materials and Methods: The following databases were consulted: Scopus, PubMed (Medline), Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. This systematic review follows the PRISMA guidelines and those for conducting systematic reviews in sports science. The PICOS strategy was used to select and include studies. The quality of the studies was assessed methodologically using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool. Results: The included studies evaluated multiple aspects of physical and physiological fitness in blind 5-A-side football, with a predominance of descriptive and observational research, although longitudinal interventions in national teams were also identified. The most studied physiological-physical variables are aerobic capacity and cardiovascular response; anthropometry and body composition; strength, power, and injury risk; external competition demands; balance; and postural control. The studies in the technical–tactical dimension focused on the effectiveness of shots on goal and on the characterization of control, dribbling, and shooting actions. The most studied recovery variable was sleep. Conclusions. The evidence suggests that training processes should integrate both improvements in physical fitness and physiological demands, as well as the refinement of decision-making and offensive actions. Despite advances, scientific output in this discipline remains limited, highlighting the need to promote studies with greater methodological rigor and sample diversity. Full article

Background: An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is one of the most psychologically demanding injuries in professional sport. This study aimed to describe a structured psychological intervention conducted during the rehabilitation process following an ACL rupture in a professional female futsal player. Methods: A single-case longitudinal design was implemented with three phases (pre-test, intervention, post-test) across a 12-month rehabilitation period. Psychological assessment was conducted at four key points: initial evaluation, rehabilitation follow-up, medical discharge, and three- and six-month follow-ups. The battery included perfectionism (FMPS), anxiety (STAI), depression (BDI-II), mental health indicators (DASS-21, GHQ-12), sleep quality (PSQI), pain perception and catastrophizing (VAS, PCS), mood states (POMS), psychological readiness for return to play (PRIA-RS), and perceived intervention effectiveness. The program consisted of 15 individual sessions plus a follow-up, combining cognitive–behavioral therapy principles, mindfulness-based techniques (relaxation, body scan, visualization), cognitive restructuring, sleep hygiene, goal setting, problem-solving, and emotional expression strategies. Results: Progressive and sustained improvements were observed in mood states and pain catastrophizing, along with enhanced sleep quality, psychological readiness, and reintegration into competition. Improved overall mental health indicators were also observed, supporting adherence to rehabilitation and return-to-play confidence. Conclusions: This case highlights the relevance of structured psychological intervention as an integral component of injury rehabilitation in professional athletes with ACL rupture, supporting its inclusion in multidisciplinary care and future research to optimize recovery and prevent maladaptive outcomes. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a small neuropeptide detected first in the hypothalamo–hypophyseal system; recently, it has also been identified in peripheral organs and in tumours. It is well demonstrated that PACAP exerts cell- and tissue-protecting effects in various stressful conditions and helps to maintain tissue homeostasis. In melanoma, the anti-invasive effect of PACAP has been demonstrated; however, there is also existing sporadic data which proves PACAP plays a role in melanoma progression. The major goal of our study was to investigate the signalling targets of PACAP in A2058 and WM35 melanoma cell lines in vitro. Various molecular players of melanocyte differentiation and function responded to PACAP application. SOX9 expression increased while SOX10 expression decreased and CREB signalling did not change. The expression level of TYRP1 decreased, while DCT elevated, and MITF expression showed changes at the mRNA level and in its subcellular localisation. In contrast, the amount of hyaluronan (HA) and expressions of its synthases, as well as RHAMM, increased, indicating the role of PACAP in secretion of an HA-rich matrix. In parallel with these results, we detected elevated hyaluronidase2 (Hyal2) expression in the presence of PACAP. On the other hand, alfaV and beta3 integrin expressions did not alter significantly. Our results demonstrate that exogenous PACAP modulates the expression of multiple target molecules in melanoma cells. Some of the significantly responding molecules take part in hyaluronan homeostasis, suggesting an effect of PACAP on tumour matrix composition, through which it can modulate invasiveness of melanoma cells. Von Neumann’s minimax theorem defines optimal strategic unpredictability in zero-sum games. Empirical evidence from professional sports has been interpreted as positive behavioral evidence for minimax. In this article, we analyze the strategic optimality of offensive plays in the basketball endgame when a team has a final possession and trails by no more than a single basket. This final moment of the game most closely approximates the simultaneous-move conditions of a game where minimax theory applies. Using comprehensive NBA data from 2010 to 2025, we test for equality of success rates across shooter types (star vs. non-stars) and shot selection (two-point vs. three-point). Our analysis reveals systematic violations of minimax play that have intensified with basketball’s shift to three-pointers and higher expected points. In the final decisive moment of the game, we find that teams systematically overuse three-point shots even though the two-point attempt yields higher field goal percentages. In addition, teams over-rely on star players for the final shot; non-star two-point shots have been the top-performing endgame option in 2022–2025. Full article

Developing sustainable and eco-friendly approaches to plant propagation, development, and protection is a common goal for the scientific community. Plant cell culturing enables us to obtain plant clones and produce biomolecules under controlled conditions. The same principle can be applied to the harvesting of extracellular vesicles (EVs). These nanosized structures are key players in cell communication and stress response by carrying, protecting, and delivering important biomolecules. Raising interest in the scientific community, EVs have been successfully tested as nanocarriers for therapeutics and biotechnology. However, despite their potential, there remains a gap in research on scalable, reliable sources for EV production. Our goals were to optimize EV production and isolation from induced poplar callus cell lines (Populus tremula × P. alba) and load these with RNA to validate their functionality as nanocarriers. We were able to isolate 2.5 × 1010 EVs/g, highlighting the potential for these lines to be mass-produced. Furthermore, RNA loaded into EVs through electroporation was internalized into Botrytis cinerea hyphae, reassuring their potential in protecting and delivering cargo. Our findings contribute to EV characterization and demonstrate that RNA delivery through EV transport could be a safe and effective method for future EV-based technologies in plant protection. Background: The study evaluated the acute effect of dryland maximum strength (MS) training on water polo performance. Methods: Twelve female players (20.3 ± 1.4 years) underwent initial assessments, including a head-out 20 m swim and a one-repetition maximum (1RM) strength test in three exercises: bench press, seated pull row, and half squat. These exercises were used as the experimental (EXP) condition. During the main testing sessions, participants completed the EXP and a control (CON) condition. In the EXP, players completed MS training (three sets of six repetitions at 80% 1RM), followed 15 min later by in-water testing. In the CON, only the in-water tests were performed. These included a 10 s tethered swim to measure force, a 20 m head-out swim at maximum intensity to measure performance time, ten goal-targeted throws to reach the highest accuracy and throwing velocity, and three in-water vertical jumps as high as possible. Results: The performance time in the head-out 20 m swim (EXP: 14.21 ± 0.4, CON: 14.18 ± 0.5 s), tethered swimming force (EXP: 86.85 ± 14.82, CON: 89.58 ± 15.92 N), shooting velocity (EXP: 14.67 ± 1.19, CON: 14.91 ± 0.32 m·s−1), shooting accuracy (EXP: 16.5 ± 5.4, CON: 19.0 ± 5.1 points), and in-water vertical jump height (EXP: 51.7 ± 5.6, CON: 52.9 ± 4.2 cm) were no different between conditions (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Dryland maximum strength training performed with high loads (80% 1RM) does not impair subsequent performance during sport-specific testing in female water polo players. These findings suggest that such MS training can be safely implemented 15 min prior to in-water training sessions. Full article

The United Nations has set a global vision towards emissions reduction and green growth through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Towards the realisation of SDGS 7, 9, and 13, we focus on green hydrogen production as a potential pathway to achievement. Green hydrogen, produced via water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, represents a pivotal solution towards climate change mitigation. Energy access in West Africa remains a challenge, and dependency on fossil fuels persists. So, green hydrogen offers an opportunity to harness abundant solar resources, reduce carbon emissions, and foster economic development. This study evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of green hydrogen production in five West African countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Niger, and Senegal. The analyses cover the solar energy potential, hydrogen production capacities, and economic viability using the Levelised Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) and Net Present Value (NPV). Results indicate substantial annual hydrogen production potential with LCOH values competitive with global benchmarks amidst the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Despite this potential, several barriers exist, including high initial capital costs, policy and regulatory gaps, limited technical capacity, and water resource constraints. We recommend targeted strategies for strengthening policy frameworks, fostering international partnerships, enhancing regional infrastructure integration, and investing in capacity-building initiatives. By addressing these barriers, West Africa can be a key player in the global green hydrogen market. Full article

Driven by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the global “Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic” initiative, China has become a key bamboo industry player by leveraging abundant resources and an integrated supply chain. To enhance international competitiveness, optimizing product structure and market resilience is essential. Using descriptive statistics, visualization, trade concentration index, and K-means clustering, this study analyzed China’s bamboo trade spatiotemporal patterns and market resilience based on 2015–2024 China customs data. Results revealed major revisions in the Harmonized System (HS) codes for bamboo products in 2017, yet existing classifications remain insufficiently detailed. Imports declined overall, characterized by fragmented primary products mainly sourced from the Taiwan region of China and Vietnam. In contrast, exports grew steadily, led by Bamboo Tableware, with the United States, Japan, and Europe as key markets, and notable expansion into Southeast Asia. In 2024, bamboo products accounted for over 99% of China’s total bamboo trade value, and the export–import gap kept widening. Compared with 2015, export concentration declined: low- and medium-concentration markets increased, highly concentrated ones decreased, and overall resilience improved. Cluster analysis split core destinations into seven groups in 2015 but only five in 2024, signalling broader demand diversity and fewer single-category-dominated markets. The study recommends refining HS codes to reflect new bamboo innovations; consolidating markets in Europe and America while expanding differentiated demand in Southeast Asia; upgrading Bamboo Tableware through technology; and boosting core product competitiveness to support global bamboo trade and the “Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic” initiative. This study analyzes how blockchain technology can be interpreted through an economic perspective, viewing network nodes as rational agents whose strategic behavior affects the efficiency and sustainability of decentralized systems. Using a multi-player non-cooperative game with complete but imperfect information, we model validators’ decisions in voting-based consensus mechanisms and compare alternative incentive configurations through simulation results. The analysis shows how variations in reward schemes influence validators’ behavior and consensus reliability. Extending the framework to Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), the study explores how blockchain-based incentives can enhance participation, accountability, and decentralized governance. The findings highlight that incentive design plays a decisive role in aligning individual motivations with collective goals, ensuring both network integrity and long-term sustainability. Overall, this study connects economic theory with blockchain governance, extending its relevance to business and organizational contexts beyond cryptocurrencies. Full article

Among the players for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda, global energy transition plays a pivotal role. Among the emerging strategies, energy sharing mechanisms, such as peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, virtual power plants (VPPs), energy communities, and local energy markets are widely recognized for their potential to increase energy justice, resilience, and sustainability. These models redistribute energy production and consumption responsibilities among users, fostering decentralization, democratization, and inclusivity in energy systems. This review synthesizes current literature on energy sharing and evaluates their contributions to specific SDGs, particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Furthermore, the paper discusses regulatory frameworks, technological enablers, and socio-economic barriers to implementation. It concludes with policy recommendations for promoting energy sharing schemes as effective tools in the global pursuit of sustainable development. Full article

This study aimed to define performance characteristics of elite male football players in the Turkish Super League in 2024–2025 according to playing positions, evaluate advantages/disadvantages, and reveal the differences between home and away matches. GPS data were selected from those who played at least 1 match out of the 12 matches (eight home + four away) for at least 80 min. While 13 players had at least one match with a minimum of 80 min of data for both home and away games, 5 players had it only for either home or away games. The distance covered by wingers at a speed of 20–25 km/h was greater than center backs. Distance covered by wingers at a speed higher than 25 km/h was greater than that covered by center backs, central midfielders, and strikers. We found no home advantage (41.7%) or away disadvantage (28.6%). However, the variables of distance for 20–25 km/h and >25 km/h were higher in away matches than in home matches. A distance of >25 km/h and acceleration distance have a moderate to strong relationship with assist and goal numbers, respectively (p < 0.05). Our results confirmed that different physical demands were required for playing positions and showed that high-speed running and sprint performance variables differed by match location. Full article

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a multisystem progressive neurodegenerative disease. A recent theory of ALS onsetting pathogenesis proposed that the initiating primary damage is an acquired irreversible intrafusal proprioceptive terminal PIEZO2 channelopathy with underlying genetic and environmental risk factors. This Piezo2 channelopathy may also disrupt the ultrafast proton-based oscillatory signaling to motor neurons through vesicular transporter 1 (VGLUT1) and to the hippocampus through VGLUT2. As a result, it may gradually degenerate motor neurons in which process Kv1.2 ion channels are gradually depleted. It also gradually depletes heat shock transcription factor-1 (HSF-1) in the hippocampus, hence negatively affecting adult hippocampal neurogenesis. Syndecans, especially syndecan-3 (SDC3) in the nervous system, may act as critical players in the maintenance of the crosstalk between Piezo ion channels. Hence, our goal was to reanalyze the potential pathogenic gene variants from the cohort of our previous ALS study with a special focus on the aforementioned genes. Reanalysis of data formerly acquired by whole-exome sequencing of 21 non-related adult ALS patients was carried out with a focus on 28 genes. Accordingly, we identified charge-altering variants of SDC3 in 13 patients out of 21 that may contribute to the impairment of the Piezo crosstalk, and the progressive loss of the proposed proton-based signaling to motor neurons and to the hippocampus. A variant of uncertain significance was identified in the KCNA2 gene that may facilitate the faster loss of Kv1.2 ion function on motor neurons when Piezo2 channelopathy prevails. Not to mention that one variant was identified in the potassium current rectifying ion channels encoding KCNK1 and KCNK16 genes that may also propel the ALS disease process and provide the autoimmune-like pathogenic background. Moreover, Piezo2 channelopathy likely promotes diminishing HSF1 function in the hippocampus in the presence of the identified HSF1 variant. The current findings may support the ALS onsetting acquired irreversible Piezo2 channelopathy-induced pathogenesis. However, the preliminary nature of these findings needs validation and further functional studies on cohorts with a larger sample size in the future. Full article

Cancer neuroscience is an emerging field revealing how malignancies interact with the nervous system to shape disease progression and symptom burden. In colorectal cancer (CRC), increasing evidence suggests a direct interplay between tumor cells and peripheral sensory neurons, contributing not only to cancer progression but also to chemotherapy-induced side effects such as peripheral neuropathy. Chemokines, particularly CCL3, appear to be key players in this bidirectional communication. This literature review aims to critically examine the role of CCL3 in CRC and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), with a focus on identifying potential mechanistic overlaps. Specifically, we evaluate whether CCL3 may serve as a molecular link between cancer progression and the development of neuropathic pain. In CRC, CCL3 is frequently upregulated, promoting tumor proliferation, invasion, and immune remodeling through CCR5- and MAPK-dependent pathways. Elevated CCL3 expression correlates with advanced stage, nerve infiltration, and worse prognosis, while select studies suggest it may also enhance antitumor immunity via dendritic cell recruitment. In parallel, CCL3 is also upregulated in the nervous system during CIPN, where it contributes to chronic pain through activation of glial cells, sensitization of nociceptive pathways (e.g., TRPV1, P2X7), and desensitization of opioid receptors. Notably, MAPK signaling is a shared downstream pathway in both contexts, suggesting a potential mechanistic bridge between tumor biology and neurotoxicity. In conclusion, CCL3 emerges as a central molecule at the intersection of CRC and CIPN. Understanding its context-dependent roles may offer new opportunities for risk prediction, biomarker development, and therapeutic intervention—contributing to the broader goals of cancer neuroscience in improving both oncologic and neurologic outcomes.
