The present paper proposes a three-dimensional (3D) spherical shell model for the magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) free vibration analysis of simply supported multilayered smart shells. A mixed curvilinear orthogonal reference system is used to write the unified 3D governing equations for cylinders, cylindrical panels and spherical shells. The closed-form solution of the problem is performed considering Navier harmonic forms in the in-plane directions and the exponential matrix method in the thickness direction. A layerwise approach is possible, considering the interlaminar continuity conditions for displacements, electric and magnetic potentials, transverse shear/normal stresses, transverse normal magnetic induction and transverse normal electric displacement. Some preliminary cases are proposed to validate the present 3D MEE free vibration model for several curvatures, materials, thickness values and vibration modes. Then, new benchmarks are proposed in order to discuss possible effects in multilayered MEE curved smart structures. In the new benchmarks, first, three circular frequencies for several half-wave number couples and for different thickness ratios are proposed. Thickness vibration modes are shown in terms of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and magnetic induction along the thickness direction. These new benchmarks are useful to understand the free vibration behavior of MEE curved smart structures, and they can be used as reference for researchers interested in the development of of 2D/3D MEE models. Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. This study applies the Weighted Overlay Analysis (WOA) method integrated with GIS to assess landslide susceptibility along Al Figrah Road in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, western Saudi Arabia. Seven key conditioning factors, elevation, slope, aspect, drainage density, lithology, soil type, and precipitation were integrated using high-resolution remote sensing data and expert-assigned weights. The output susceptibility map categorized the region into three zones: low (93.5 million m2), moderate (271.2 million m2), and high risk (33.1 million m2). Approximately 29% of the road corridor lies within the low-risk zone, 48% in the moderate zone, and 23% in the high-risk zone. Ten critical sites with potential landslide activity were detected along the road, correlating well with the high-risk zones on the map. Structural weaknesses in the area, such as faults, joints, foliation planes, and shear zones in both igneous and metamorphic rock units, were key contributors to slope instability. The findings offer practical guidance for infrastructure planning and geohazard mitigation in arid, mountainous environments and demonstrate the applicability of WOA in data-scarce regions. Roadway deformation failure is often related to the presence of weak structural planes (WSPs) in the surrounding rock mass. Especially in coastal mining environments, WSP-induced deformation can create pathways that connect faults with seawater, accelerating groundwater seepage and inrush hazards. This study employs an optimized Finite–Discrete Element Method (Y-Mat) to simulate WSP-driven fracture evolution, introducing an elastoplastic failure criterion and enhanced contact force calculations. The results show that the farther the WSP is from the roadway, the lower its influence; its existence alters the shape of the plastic zone by lengthening the failure zone along the fault direction, while its angle changes the shape and location of the failure zone and deflects fracture directions, with the surrounding rock between the roadway and WSP suffering the most severe failure. The deformation failure of roadway surrounding rock is influenced by WSPs. Excavation unloading reduces the normal stress and shear strength in the weak structural plane of surrounding rock, resulting in slip and deformation. Additionally, WSP-induced fractures act as groundwater influx conduits, especially in fault-proximal roadways or where crack angles align with hydraulic gradients, so mitigation in water-rich mining environments should prioritize sealing these pathways. The results provide a theoretical basis for roadway excavation and support engineering under the influence of WSPs. Full article

Background: A critical review of the literature demonstrates that masticatory apparatus with an artificial oral environment is of interest in the fields including (i) dental science; (ii) food science; (iii) the pharmaceutical industries for drug release. However, apparatus that closely mimics human chewing and oral conditions has yet to be realised. This study investigates the vital role of dental morphology and form–function connections using two-bite test parameters for effective drug release from medicated chewing gum (MCG) and compares them to human chewing efficiency with the aid of a humanoid chewing robot and a bionics product lifecycle management (PLM) framework with built-in reverse biomimetics—both developed by the first author. Methods: A novel, bio-engineered two-bite testbed is created for two testing machines with compression and torsion capabilities to conduct two-bite tests for evaluating the mechanical properties of MCGs. Results: Experimental studies are conducted to investigate the relationship between biting force and crushing/shearing and understand chewing efficiency and effective mastication. This is with respect to mechanochemistry and power stroke for disrupting mechanical bonds releasing the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) of MCGs. The manuscript discusses the effect and the critical role that jaw physiology, dental morphology, the Bennett angle of mandible (BA) and the Frankfort-mandibular plane angle (FMA) on two-bite test parameters when FMA = 0, 25 or 29.1 and BA = 0 or 8. Tectonic Characteristics and Geological Significance of the Yeba Volcanic Arc in the Southern Lhasa Terrane

The Southern Lhasa Terrane, as the southernmost tectonic unit of the Eurasian continent, has long been a focal area in global geoscientific research due to its complex evolutionary history. The Yeba Formation exposed in this terrane comprises an Early–Middle Jurassic volcanic–sedimentary sequence that records multiphase tectonic deformation. This study applies structural analysis to identify three distinct phases of tectonic deformation in the Yeba Formation of the Southern Lhasa Terrane. The D1 deformation is characterized by brittle–ductile shearing, as evidenced by the development of E-W-trending regional shear foliation (S1). S1 planes dip northward at angles of 27–87°, accompanied by steeply plunging stretching lineations (85–105°). Both south- and north-directed shear-rotated porphyroclasts are observed in the hanging wall. 40Ar-39Ar dating results suggest that the D1 deformation occurred at ~79 Ma and may represent an extrusion-related structure formed under a back-arc compressional regime induced by the low-angle subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean plate. The D2 deformation is marked by the folding of the pre-existing shear foliation (S1), generating an axial planar cleavage (S2). S2 planes dip north or south with angles of 40–70° and fold hinges plunge westward or NWW. Based on regional tectonic evolution, it is inferred that the deformation may have resulted from sustained north–south compressional stress during the Late Cretaceous (79–70 Ma), which caused the overall upward extrusion of the southern Gangdese back-arc basin, leading to upper crustal shortening and thickening and subsequently initiating folding. The D3 deformation is dominated by E-W-striking ductile shear zones. The regional shear foliation (S3) exhibits a preferred orientation of 347°∠75°. Outcrop-scale ductile deformation indicators reveal a top-to-the-NW shear sense. Combined with regional tectonic evolution, the third-phase (D3) deformation is interpreted as a combined product of the transition from compression to lateral extension within the Lhasa terrane, associated with the activation of the Gangdese Central Thrust (GCT) and the uplift of the Gangdese batholith since ~25 Ma. During the process of flexible aerial refueling, the flexible structure of the hose drogue assembly is affected by internal and external interference, such as docking maneuvering, deformation of the hose, attitude changes, and body vibrations, causing the hose to swing and the whipping phenomenon, which greatly limits the success rate and safety of aerial refueling operations. Based on a 2.4 m transonic wind tunnel, high-speed wind tunnel test technology of a flexible aerial refueling hose–drogue system was established to carry out experimental research on the coupling characteristics of aerodynamics and multi-body dynamics. Based on the aid of Videogrammetry Model Deformation (VMD), high-speed photography, dynamic balance, and other wind tunnel test technologies, the dynamic characteristics of the hose–drogue system in a high-speed airflow and during the approach of the receiver are obtained. Adopting flexible multi-body dynamics, a dynamic system of the tanker, hose, drogue, and receiver is modeled. The cable/beam model is based on an arbitrary Lagrange–Euler method, and the absolute node coordinate method is used to describe the deformation, movement, and length variation in the hose during both winding and unwinding. The aerodynamic forces of the tanker, receiver, hose, and drogue are modeled, reflecting the coupling influence of movement of the tanker and receiver, the deformation of the hose and drogue, and the aerodynamic forces on each other. The tests show that during the approach of the receiver (distance from 1000 mm to 20 mm), the sinking amount of the drogue increases by 31 mm; due to the offset of the receiver probe, the drogue moves sideways from the symmetric plane of the receiver. Meanwhile, the oscillation magnitude of the drogue increases (from 33 to 48 and from 48 to 80 in spanwise and longitudinal directions, respectively). The simulation results show that the shear force induced by the oscillation of the hose and the propagation velocity of both the longitudinal and shear waves are affected by the hose stiffness and Mach number. The results presented in this work can be of great reference to further increase the safety of aerial refueling. Full article

This study investigates the impact of mineralogical and petrographic characteristics on the mechanical behavior of granitic and mafic rocks from the Shuangjiangkou (Sichuan Province) and Damiao complexes (Hebei Province) in China. The research methodology combined petrographic investigation, comprising optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) methods, with methodical geotechnical characterization to establish quantitative relationships between mineralogical composition and engineering properties. The petrographic studies revealed three lithologic groups: fine-to-medium-grained Shuangjiangkou granite (45%–60% feldspar, 27%–35% quartz, 10%–15% mica), plagioclase-rich anorthosite (more than 90% of plagioclase), and intermediate mangerite (40%–50% of plagioclase, 25%–35% of perthite). The uniaxial compressive strength tests showed great variations: granite (127.53 ± 15.07 MPa), anorthosite (167.81 ± 23.45 MPa), and mangerite (205.12 ± 23.87 MPa). Physical properties demonstrated inverse correlations between mechanical strength and both water absorption (granite: 0.25%–0.42%; anorthosite: 0.07%–0.44%; mangerite: 0.10%–0.25%) and apparent porosity (granite: 0.75%–0.92%; anorthosite: 0.20%–1.20%; mangerite: 0.29%–0.69%), with positive correlations to specific gravity (granite: 1.88–3.03; anorthosite: 2.67–2.90; mangerite: 2.43–2.99). Critical petrographic features controlling mechanical behavior include the following: (1) mica content in granite creating anisotropic properties, (2) extensive feldspar alteration through sericitization increasing microporosity and reducing intergranular cohesion, (3) plagioclase micro-fracturing and alteration to clinozoisite–sericite assemblages in anorthosite creating weakness networks, and (4) mangerite’s superior composition of >95% hard minerals with minimal sheet mineral content and limited alteration. Failure mode analysis indicated distinct patterns: granite experiencing shear-dominated failure (30–45° diagonal planes), anorthosite demonstrated tensile fracturing with vertical splitting, and mangerite showed catastrophic brittle failure with extensive fracture networks. These findings provide quantitative frameworks that relate petrographic features to engineering behavior, offering valuable insights for rock mass assessment and engineering design in similar crystalline rock terrains. This research investigated and compared the structural behavior of reinforced concrete straight beams and beams made with out-of-plane parts. This study focused on the influence of the location and number of out-of-plane parts, as well as encasing the beams with a steel section, on the ultimate strength, deflection, and rotation in addition to the ductility, energy absorption, and failure mode. A total of nine beams were modelized numerically, divided into three series. The first one included one straight beam, while the remaining two series included four beams each made with out-of-plane parts with and without steel sections. The beams with out-of-plane parts connected the two, three, four, and five concrete segments. The outcomes revealed that the beams made with out-of-plane parts showed less strength than straight beams, which increased the connected segments and reduced the ultimate strength capacity. The regular beam’s linearity was dissimilar to the zigzag beams, which showed a linearity of 32% and was reduced to 22%, 20%, 19.67%, and 16% for beam out-of-plane parts made with two, three, four, and five segments, respectively. Forming a zigzag in the plane of the beams reduced the cracking load, but the decrement depended on the number of parts, which led to more reduction in the yielding load. Concerning the deflection and deformations, the concrete straight beams failed in flexure, with maximum deflection occurring at the midspan of the beam, which was different for beams without plane parts, which showed a combined shear-torsional failure for which the maximum deformation occurred at the midspan with inclination of connected parts on the interior perpendicular axis. Encasing the beams’ out-of-plane parts with steel sections enhanced the structural behavior. The ductility and energy absorption of the out-of-plane parts beams were less than the straight ones, but encasing the beams with a steel section improved the ductility and energy absorption twice. This study investigates the deformation and fracture mechanisms of a Ti61Al16Cr10Nb8V5 multi-principal element alloy (Ti61V5 alloy) under quasi-static and dynamic compression. The alloy comprises an equiaxed BCC matrix (~35 μm) with uniformly dispersed nano-sized B2 precipitates and a ~3.5% HCP phase along grain boundaries, exhibiting a density of 4.82 g/cm3, an ultimate tensile strength of 1260 MPa, 12.8% elongation, and a specific strength of 262 MPa·cm3/g. The Ti61V5 alloy exhibits a pronounced strain-rate-strengthening effect, with a strain rate sensitivity coefficient (m) of ~0.0088 at 0.001–10/s. Deformation activates abundant {011} and {112} slip bands in the BCC matrix, whose interactions generate jogs, dislocation dipoles, and loops, evolving into high-density forest dislocations and promoting screw-dominated mixed dislocations. The B2 phase strengthens the alloy via dislocation shearing, forming dislocation arrays, while the HCP phase enhances strength through a dislocation bypass mechanism. At higher strain rates (960–5020/s), m increases to ~0.0985. Besides {011} and {112}, the BCC matrix activates high-index slip planes {123}. Intensified slip band interactions generate dense jogs and forest dislocations, while planar dislocations combined with edge dislocation climb enable obstacle bypassing, increasing the fraction of edge-dominated mixed dislocations. The Ti61V5 alloy shows low sensitivity to adiabatic shear localization. Under forced shear, plastic-flow shear bands form first, followed by recrystallized shear bands formed through a rotational dynamic recrystallization mechanism. Microcracks initiate throughout the shear bands; during inward propagation, they may terminate upon encountering matrix microvoids or deflect and continue when linking with internal microcracks. A new concept of a 3D volumetric module, made up of six plane stiffened self-compacting fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) panels, is here studied. Experimental campaigns are carried out on SFRC material and on the thin-slab structures used for this modular concept. The high volume of steel fibers (80 kg/m3) used in the formulation of this concrete allow a positive strain hardening to be obtained in the post-cracking regime observed on the bending characterization tests. The high mechanical material characteristics, obtained both in tension and compression, allow a significant decrease in the module slabs’ thickness. The tests carried out on the 7 cm thick slab demonstrate a high load-bearing capacity and ductility under bending loading; this is also the case for shear loading configuration, although without any shear reinforcements. Numerical simulations of the material mechanical tests were conducted using Abaqus code; the results corroborate the experimental findings. Then, simulations were also conducted at the structural level, mainly to evaluate the behavior and the bearing capacity of the thin 3D module stiffened slabs. Remolding Water Content Effect on the Behavior of Frozen Clay Soils Subjected to Monotonic Triaxial Loading

Understanding the mechanical behavior of frozen clay subgrade soils was essential for ensuring the safe and stable operation of transportation lines. However, the influence of remolding water content w on this behavior remained unclear. To address this gap, this study examined the effect of w through monotonic triaxial testing. Three typical remolding water contents (w = 19%, 27.5% and 35%) and three confining pressures (σ3 = 200 kPa, 700 kPa and 1200 kPa) were considered. Results showed that the mechanical behavior of frozen clay soils displayed a clear dependence on w, which was controlled by microstructural evolution. As w increased, the shear strength qmax, resilient modulus E0 and cohesion c increased, which resulted from the progressive development of ice bonding within the shear plane. A threshold w value was found at wopt = 27.5%, marking a structural transition and separating the variations of qmax, E0 and c into two regimes. When w ≤ 27.5%, the soil fabric was controlled by clay aggregates. As w increased, the growth in ice cementation was confined within these aggregates, leading to limited increase in qmax, E0 and c. However, as w exceeded 27.5%, the soil fabric transitioned into a homogeneous matrix of dispersed clay particles. In this case, increasing w greatly promoted the development of an interconnected ice cementation network, thus significantly facilitating the increase in qmax, E0 and c. The friction angle φ decreased with w increasing, primarily due to the lubrication effect caused by the growing ice. In addition, the enhanced lubrication effect in the clay particle-dominated fabric (w > 27.5%) resulted in a larger reduction rate of φ. Regarding Poisson’s ratio v and dilation angle ψ, the w increase led to growth in both parameters. This phenomenon could be explained by the increased involvement of solid ice into the soil structure. Full article

A fabric orientation angle has a significant influence on the failure mechanisms at the lamina level. Any change in this angle can lead to a sudden reduction in strength, potentially resulting in catastrophic failures due to variations in load-carrying capacity. This study examined the impact of off-axis fabric orientation angles (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) on the flexural properties of non-crimp basalt-fibre-reinforced acrylic thermoplastic composites. The basalt/Elium® composite panels were manufactured using a vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding technique. The results show that the on-axis (0°) composite specimens exhibited linear stress–strain behaviour and quasi-brittle failure characterised by fibre dominance, achieving superior strength and failure strain values of 1128 MPa and 3.85%, respectively. In contrast, the off-axis specimens exhibited highly nonlinear ductile behaviour. They failed at lower load values due to matrix dominance, with strength and failure strain values of 144 MPa and 6.0%, respectively, observed at a fabric orientation angle of 45°. The in-plane shear stress associated with off-axis angles influenced the flexural properties. Additionally, the degree of deformation and the fracture mechanisms were analysed. Full article

This study investigates the excavation of the cataclastic loose rock slope at the mixing plant on the right bank of the BDa Hydropower Station, which is situated in the upper reaches of Lancang River. The dominant structural plane of the cataclastic loose rock mass was obtained using unmanned aerial vehicle tilt photography and 3D point cloud technology. The actual 3D numerical model of the study area was developed using the 3DEC discrete element numerical simulation software. The excavation response characteristics and overall stability of the cataclastic loose rock slope were analyzed. The support effect was evaluated considering the preliminary shaft micropile and Macintosh reinforced mat as slope support measures, and the stability was assessed by applying seismic waves. The results showed the main deformation and failure area after slope cleaning excavation at the junction of the cataclastic loose rock mass and Qedl deposits in the shallow surface of the excavation face. Moreover, the maximum total displacement could reach 18.3 cm. Subsequently, the overall displacement of the slope was significantly reduced, and the maximum total displacement decreased to 2.78 cm. The support effect was significant. Under an earthquake load, the slope with support exhibited considerable displacement in the shallow surface of the excavation slope, with collapse deformation primarily occurring through shear failure. In cold regions, the rock mass of open-pit mine slopes is continuously exposed to freeze–thaw (FT) environments, during which the fracture structures and their infilling materials undergo significant degradation, severely affecting slope stability and the assessment of service life. Conventional laboratory FT tests are typically based on uniform temperature settings, which fail to reflect the actual thermal variations at different burial depths, thereby limiting the accuracy of mechanical parameter acquisition. Taking the Wushan open-pit mine as the engineering background, this study establishes a temperature–depth relationship, defines multiple thermal intervals, and conducts direct shear tests on structural plane filling materials under various FT conditions to characterize the evolution of cohesion and internal friction angle. Results from rock mass testing and numerical simulation demonstrate that shear strength parameters exhibit an exponential decline with increasing FT cycles and decreasing burial depth, with the filling material playing a dominant role in the initial stage of degradation. Furthermore, a two-dimensional fracture network model of the rock mass was constructed, and the representative elementary volume (REV) was determined through the evolution of equivalent plastic strain. Based on this, spatial assignment of slope strength was performed, followed by stability analysis. Based on regression fitting using 0–25 FT cycles, regression model predictions indicate that when the number of FT cycles exceeds 42, the slope safety factor drops below 1.0, entering a critical instability state. This research successfully establishes a spatial field of mechanical parameters and evaluates slope stability, providing a theoretical foundation and parameter support for the long-term service evaluation and stability assessment of cold-region open-pit mine slopes.
