Background: Compression garments (CG) may influence countermovement jump (CMJ) performance by altering hip and knee biomechanics, but existing evidence remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the effects of compression tights (CTs), compression shorts (CSs), and control shorts (CCs) on CMJ performance and lower-limb biomechanics. Methods: Nine physically active men from a university were recruited to perform CMJ while wearing CTs, CSs, and CCs in a randomized sequence for a within-subjects repeated-measures design. A Vicon 3D motion capture system and an AMTI 3D force plate were used to collect biomechanical data. Visual3D software was used to calculate the joint angle, moment, and force of the lower limbs. Results: Statistical parametric mapping analysis with repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that during the propulsion phase of the CMJ, wearing CSs significantly reduced the hip flexion angle compared to wearing CCs (25–36%); meanwhile, wearing CTs significantly reduced the knee extension and flexion moment (34–35%) and decreased the hip extension moment during the propulsion phase (36–37%). In addition, CTs significantly reduced the hip abduction angle during the flight phase (37–39%), and CSs significantly reduced the hip anterior force during the landing phase (59–60%). Conclusions: Compression legwear significantly affected the hip and knee biomechanics in propulsion, but these differences were not sufficient to improve the CMJ height. Due to the improvement in hip biomechanics in the flight and landing phases, there may be potential benefits for movement transitions and landing performance in CMJ. Full article

Fuel electro-hydraulic servo valves are core components in the fuel control system of aero-engines, and their performance directly affects thrust regulation and power output precision. Due to the combustibility of the working medium in fuel systems and the lack of effective circulation filtration, the retention of micron-sized particles within the valve gap can lead to valve spool jamming, which is a critical reliability issue. This study, based on fractal theory and the liquid–solid two-phase flow model, proposes a parametric model for non-ideal surface valve gaps and analyzes the dynamics of particles subjected to drag, lift, and buoyant forces on rough surfaces. By numerically analyzing flow field models with different roughness levels and comparing them with an ideal smooth gap model, the migration characteristics of particles were studied. To verify the accuracy of the model, an upscaled experimental setup was built based on similarity theory, and PIV experiments were conducted for validation. Experimental results show that the particle release position and valve surface roughness significantly affect particle migration time. The weight of the release position on particle migration time is 63%, while the impact of valve surface roughness is 37%. In models with different roughness levels, the particle migration time increases more rapidly for roughness values greater than Ra0.4, while for values less than Ra0.4, the increase in migration time is slower. Furthermore, the study reveals that particle migration trajectories are independent of flow velocity, with velocity only affecting particle migration time. This research provides theoretical support for enhancing the reliability of fuel electro-hydraulic servo valves and offers a new perspective for the design of highly reliable hydraulic components. Numerous studies have been conducted employing various techniques to remove pollutants from water bodies. Among these techniques, adsorption a surface phenomenon that utilises adsorbents derived from agricultural residues has shown considerable potential for the removal of contaminants such as heavy metals. However, most of these investigations have been carried out at the laboratory scale, with limited efforts directed towards predicting the performance of these systems at an industrial level. Accordingly, the present study aims to model a packed bed column at industrial scale for the removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solutions, employing biomass derived from oil palm residues as the adsorbent material. To achieve this, Aspen Adsorption was used as a modelling and simulation tool to evaluate the impact of bed height, inlet flow rate, and initial concentration through a parametric assessment. This evaluation incorporated the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm models in conjunction with the Linear Driving Force (LDF) kinetic model. The results indicated that the optimal operating parameters included a column height of 5 m, a flow rate of 250 m3/day, and an initial metal concentration of 5000 mg/L. Moreover, all models demonstrated removal efficiencies of up to 94.6% for both Pb(II) and Ni(II). An increase in bed height resulted in longer breakthrough and saturation times but led to a reduction in adsorption efficiency. Conversely, higher flow rates shortened these times yet enhanced efficiency. These findings underscore the potential of computational modelling tools as predictive instruments for evaluating the performance of adsorption systems at an industrial scale. Full article

Vehicle collisions with street lighting poles generate extremely high impact forces, often resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Therefore, enhancing the structural resilience of pole bases is a critical engineering objective. This study investigates a comprehensive dynamic analysis conducted with respect to base material behavior and energy absorption of GFRP lighting pole structures under impact loads. A finite element (FE) model of a 5 m-tall tapered GFRP pole with a steel base sleeve, base plate, and anchor bolts was developed. A 500 kg drop-weight impact at 400 mm above the base simulated vehicle collision conditions. The model was validated against experimental data, accurately reproducing the observed failure mode and peak force within 6%. Parametric analyses explored variations in pole diameter, wall thickness, base plate size and thickness, sleeve height, and anchor configuration. Results revealed that geometric parameters—particularly wall thickness and base plate dimensions—had the most significant influence on energy absorption. Doubling the wall thickness reduced normalized energy absorption by approximately 76%, while increases in base plate size and thickness reduced it by 35% and 26%, respectively. Material strength and anchor bolt configuration showed minimal impact. These findings underscore the importance of optimizing pole geometry to enhance crashworthiness. Controlled structural deformation improves energy dissipation, making geometry-focused design strategies more effective than simply increasing material strength. This work provides a foundation for designing safer roadside poles and highlights areas for further exploration in base configurations and connection systems. Full article

Few studies have examined Hybrid Aquatic–Aerial Vehicles (HAAVs), autonomous vehicles designed to operate in both air and water, especially those that are aircraft-launched and recovered, with a variable-sweep design to free dive into a body of water and breach under buoyant and propulsive force to re-achieve flight. The novel design research examines the viability of a recoverable sonar-search child aircraft for maritime patrol, one which can overcome the prohibitive sea state limitations of all current HAAV designs in the research literature. This paper reports on the analysis from computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of such an HAAV diving into static seawater at low speeds due to the reverse thrust of two retractable electric-ducted fans (EDFs) and its subsequent breach back into flight initially using a fast buoyancy engine developed for deep-sea research vessels. The HAAV model entered the water column at speeds around 10 ms−1 and exited at 5 ms−1 under various buoyancy cases, normal to the surface. Results revealed that impact force magnitudes varied with entry speed and were more acute according to vehicle mass, while a sufficient portion of the fuselage was able to clear typical wave heights during its breach for its EDF propulsors and wings to protract unhindered. Examining the medium transition dynamics of such a novel HAAV has provided insight into the structural, propulsive, buoyancy, and control requirements for future conceptual design iterations. Research is now focused on validating these unperturbed CFD dive and breach cases with pool experiments before then parametrically and numerically examining the effects of realistic ocean sea states. The present study investigates the influence of the configurations of anchor bolts and stiffeners on the monotonic response under moment conditions in the major axis and compression force of partial-strength exposed column base plate connections in order to ameliorate their response, limiting the number of welded details. Parametric finite element simulations were performed based on models calibrated against experimental results available from the recent literature. The results show the efficiency of the investigated configurations, namely, (i) the presence of rib stiffener results in high stiffness and strength with a reduction in ductility; (ii) the linear pattern of anchor bolts (e.g., rectangular distribution) is characterized by the limited contribution of the outer anchor bolts to the overall resistance of the connection; (iii) the trapezoidal pattern of the anchor bolts exhibit a better mechanical performance as well as their efficiency; and (iv) the increase in compression force influences the mechanical response of the base connection with an increase in both resistance and rigidity until the column is stable against the moment–axial force interaction. This paper proposes a disturbance observer (DOB)-based robust force control framework for tendon-sheath mechanisms (TSMs) that transmit tension forces from the proximal to the distal end. A detailed physical model of the TSM system, where a motor actuates the tendon and the output corresponds to the contact force at the robot end-effector, is developed. However, the resulting nominal model adopts a simplified representation of friction and involves significant parametric uncertainties due to the inherently complex dynamics of the tendon-sheath structure. By rigorously verifying the well-established robust stability conditions associated with DOB-based control frameworks, it is confirmed that the tendon-sheath transmission system satisfies all required assumptions and stability criteria. Furthermore, the necessary additional conditions can be readily met by appropriately designing the Q-filter, which is comparatively straightforward in practice. This validation supports the theoretical soundness and practical suitability of employing a DOB to effectively estimate and compensate for the system’s inherent parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. Numerical simulations incorporating a discrete-segment tendon model with an advanced friction dynamics formulation demonstrate significant improvements in force tracking accuracy at the tendon’s distal end compared to conventional control schemes without DOB compensation. The results highlight the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme for tendon-driven robotic systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: This review analyzes the effects of invasive and non-invasive methods of knee joint unloading on knee loading, employing a biomechanical model to evaluate their impact. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus were searched up to 15 May 2024 to identify eligible clinical studies evaluating Joint Space Width, Cartilage Thickness, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score system, Gait velocity, Peak Knee Adduction Moment, time to return to sports and to work, ground reaction force, and the visual analogue scale pain score. A second search was conducted to select a biomechanical model that could be parametrized, including the modifications that each treatment would impose on the knee joint and was capable of estimate joint loading to compare the effectiveness of each method. Results: Analyzing 28 studies (1652 participants), including 16 randomized clinical trials, revealed significant improvements mainly when performing knee joint distraction surgery, increasing Joint Space Width even after removal, and high tibial osteotomy, which realigns the knee but does not reduce loading. Implantable shock absorbers are also an attractive option as they partially unload the knee but require further investigation. Non-invasive methods improve biomechanical indicators of knee joint loading; however, they lack quantitative analysis of cartilage volume or Joint Space Width. Conclusions: Current evidence indicates a clear advantage in knee joint unloading methods, emphasizing the importance of adapted therapy. However, more extensive research, particularly using non-invasive approaches, is required to further understand the underlying knee joint loading mechanisms and advance the state of the art. The advancement of sustainable infrastructure relies on innovative design and computational modeling techniques to optimize excavation stability. This study introduces a novel approach to soil nail configuration optimization using finite element analysis (FEA) with Plaxis software (V22). Various soil nail parameters—including length, angle, and spacing—were analyzed to achieve the most efficient stabilization while minimizing costs. Results indicate that a 10-degree nail inclination from the horizontal provides an optimal balance between tensile and shear forces, reducing deformation (18.12 mm at 1 m spacing) and enhancing the safety factor (1.52). Increasing nail length significantly improves stability, but with diminishing returns beyond a threshold, while nail diameter shows minimal impact. Soil type also plays a crucial role, with coarse-grained soils (friction angle 35°) demonstrating superior performance compared to fine-grained soils (friction angle 23°). This research contributes to the field of computational modeling and intelligent design by integrating advanced simulation techniques for geotechnical stability analysis, providing an innovative and data-driven framework for parametric evaluation of soil nail configurations. Transdermal microneedle systems have received great attention due to their minimally invasive way of delivering biomolecules through the skin with reduced pain. However, designing high-strength separable microneedles, which enable easy skin penetration and easy patch detachment, is challenging. Here, we present a Parametric Rule-based Intelligent System (PRISM), which generates the design of and analyzes high-strength separable microneedles. The PRISM platform integrates parametric 3D modeling, geometry-based structural analysis, and high-resolution micro-3D printing for the creation of high-strength separable microneedles. We fabricated prototype microneedle arrays via microscale stereolithographic printing (pµSL) and demonstrated separation of microneedle tips in a skin-mimicking phantom sample. Mechanical testing showed that the suggested design achieved 2.13 ± 0.51 N axial resistance and 73.92 ± 34.77 mN shear fracture force; this surpasses that of conventional designs. Finally, an experiment using a skin-mimicking artificial phantom sample confirmed that only the PRISM-designed separable microneedles could have been inserted and separated at the target depth, whereas conventional designs failed to detach. This approach addresses the development of microneedle systems, which achieve both robust skin phantom penetration and reliable separable delivery, presenting an efficient development tool in transdermal drug delivery technology. Conventional bolts frequently fail under large deformations due to stress concentration in soft rock tunnels. In contrast, yielding bolts incorporate energy-absorbing mechanisms to sustain controlled plastic deformation. This study employed FLAC3D to numerically investigate the pull-out, shear, and bending behaviors of yielding bolts, evaluating their support effectiveness in soft rock tunnels. Three-dimensional finite difference models incorporating nonlinear coupling springs and the Mohr–Coulomb criterion were developed to simulate bolt–rock interactions under multifactorial loading. Validation against experimental pull-out tests and field measurements confirmed the model accuracy. Under pull-out loading, the axial forces in yielding bolts decreased more rapidly along the bolt length, reducing stress concentration at the head. The central position of the maximum load-bearing capacity in conventional bolts fractured under tension, resulting in an hourglass-shaped axial force distribution. Conversely, the yielding bolts maintained yield strength for an extended period after reaching it, exhibiting a spindle-shaped axial force distribution. Parametric analyses reveal that bolt spacing exerts a greater influence on support effectiveness than length. This study bridges critical gaps in understanding yielding bolt behavior under combined loading and provides a validated framework for optimizing energy-absorbing support systems in soft rock tunnels. Background and Objectives: Military capability may be reduced in hot environments with individuals at risk of exertional heat stroke (EHS). Heat tolerance testing (HTT) can be used to indicate readiness to return to duty following EHS. HTT traditionally relies on rectal core temperature (Tre) assessment via a rectal probe. This study investigated the use of gastrointestinal core temperature (Tgi) as an alternative to Tre during HTT. A secondary aim was to compare physiological factors between heat-tolerant and heat-intolerant trials. Materials and Methods: Australian Defence Force personnel undergoing HTT following known or suspected heat stroke volunteered (n = 23 cases participating in 26 trials) along with 14 controls with no known heat illness history. Confusion matrices enabled comparison of HTT outcome based on Tgi and Tre. The validity of Tgi compared to Tre during HTT was assessed using correlation and bias. Comparisons between heat-tolerant and intolerant trials were performed using non-parametric tests. Results: Although Tgi correlated closely with Tre (Spearman’s rank correlation ρ = 0.893; median bias 0.2 °C) there was no consistent pattern in the differences between measures. Importantly, the two measures only agreed on heat tolerance outcome in 80% of trials with Tgi failing to detect heat intolerance identified by Tre in 6 of 8 trials. If Tgi was relied upon for diagnostic outcome, return to duty may occur before full recovery. None of the assessed covariates were related to the difference between Tre and Tgi. In addition, resting heart rate and systolic blood pressure were significantly lower and body surface area to mass ratio significantly higher in heat-tolerant compared to intolerant trials. Conclusions: It is not recommended to rely on Tgi instead of Tre during HTT. This article presents a mathematically grounded approach to increasing the operational reliability of current collectors in electric transport systems by ensuring a constant contact force between the collector shoe and the power rail. The core objective is achieved through the development and analysis of a mechanical system incorporating spring and cam elements, which is specifically designed to provide a nearly invariant contact pressure under varying operating conditions. A set of equilibrium equations was derived to determine the stiffness ratios of the springs and the geometric conditions under which the contact force remains constant despite wear or displacement. Additionally, the paper introduces a method for synthesizing the cam profile that compensates for nonlinear spring deformation, ensuring force constancy over a wide range of movement. The analytical results were validated through parametric simulations, which assessed the influence of wear depth, rail inclination, and external vibrations on the system’s force output. These simulations, executed within a numerical framework using scientific computing tools, demonstrated that the deviation of the contact force does not exceed a few percent under typical disturbances. Experimental verification further confirmed the theoretical predictions. The study exemplifies the effective use of mathematical modeling, nonlinear mechanics, and numerical methods in the design of energy transmission components for transport applications, contributing to the development of robust and maintainable systems. The torsional stiffness of rehabilitation robot joints is a critical performance determinant, significantly affecting motion accuracy, stability, and user comfort. This paper introduces an innovative traction drive mechanism that transmits torque through friction forces, overcoming mechanical impact issues of traditional gear transmissions, though accurately modeling surface roughness effects remains challenging. Based on fractal theory, this study presents a comprehensive torsional stiffness analysis for advanced traction drive joints. Surface topography is characterized using the Weierstrass–Mandelbrot function, and a contact mechanics model accounting for elastic–plastic deformation of micro-asperities is developed to derive the tangential stiffness of individual contact pairs. Static force analysis determines load distribution, and overall joint torsional stiffness is calculated through the integration of individual contact contributions. Parametric analyses reveal that contact stiffness increases with normal load, contact length, and radius, while decreasing with the tangential load and roughness parameter. Stiffness exhibits a non-monotonic relationship with fractal dimension, reaching a maximum at intermediate values. Overall system stiffness demonstrates similar parameter dependencies, with a slight decrease under increasing output load when sufficient preload is applied. This fractal-based model enables more accurate stiffness prediction and offers valuable theoretical guidance for design optimization and performance improvement in rehabilitation robot joints. Asymmetric Knee Joint Loading in Post-Stroke Gait: A Musculoskeletal Modeling Analysis of Medial and Lateral Compartment Forces

Background/Objectives: Stroke survivors often develop asymmetric gait patterns that may lead to abnormal knee joint loading and potentially increased risk of osteoarthritis. This study aimed to investigate differences in knee joint loading between paretic and non-paretic limbs during walking in individuals post-stroke. Methods: Twenty-one chronic stroke survivors underwent three-dimensional gait analysis. A modified musculoskeletal model with a specialized knee mechanism was used to estimate medial and lateral tibiofemoral contact forces during the stance phase. Statistical parametric mapping was used to identify significant differences in joint kinematics, kinetics, and contact forces between limbs. Stepwise regression analyses examined relationships between knee moments and compartmental contact forces. Results: Significant differences in knee loading were observed between limbs, with the non-paretic limb experiencing higher medial compartment forces during early stance (6.7–15.1%, p = 0.001; 21.9–30.7%, p = 0.001) and late stance (72.3–93.7%, p < 0.001), and higher lateral compartment forces were recorded during pre-swing (86.2–99.0%, p < 0.001). In the non-paretic limb, knee extensor moment was the primary predictor of first peak medial contact force (R2 = 0.573), while knee abductor moment was the primary predictor in the paretic limb (R2 = 0.559). Conclusions: Musculoskeletal modeling revealed distinct asymmetries in knee joint loading between paretic and non-paretic limbs post-stroke, with the non-paretic limb experiencing consistently higher loads, particularly during late stance. These findings suggest that rehabilitation strategies should address not only paretic limb function but also potentially harmful compensatory mechanisms in the non-paretic limb to prevent long-term joint degeneration.
