Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia species are emerging tick-borne pathogens that cause zoonotic diseases, including rickettsiosis, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis in both human and animal populations. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of these pathogens in cattle-associated ticks from Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China. Through molecular characterization using multilocus sequence analysis (16S rRNA, gltA, groEL, and ompA genes), we analyzed 392 Rhipicephalus microplus ticks collected from March to September in 2022. The PCR results showed that eight Rickettsiales bacteria were detected, including two species of Rickettsia (51/392, 13.0%), four species of Anaplasma (52/392, 13.3%), and two species of Ehrlichia (70/392, 17.9%). Notably, the circulation of multiple pathogen species within R. microplus populations demonstrates significant microbial diversity in this region. Further consideration and investigation should be given to the possible occurrence of rickettsiosis, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis in humans and domestic animals. Our study provides critical baseline data for developing targeted surveillance strategies and informing public health interventions against tick-borne diseases in southeastern China. Full article

Pine Cones in Plantations as Refuge and Substrate of Lichens and Bryophytes in the Tropical Andes

Deforestation driven by plantations, such as Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. et Cham., is a major cause of biodiversity and functional loss in tropical ecosystems. We assessed the diversity and composition of lichens and bryophytes in four size categories of pine cones, small (3–5 cm), medium (5.1–8 cm), large (8.1–10 cm), and very large (10.1–13 cm), with a total of 150 pine cones examined, where the occurrence and cover of lichen and bryophyte species were recorded. Identification keys based on morpho-anatomical features were used to identify lichens and bryophytes. In addition, for lichens, secondary metabolites were tested using spot reactions with potassium hydroxide, commercial bleach, and Lugol’s solution, and by examining the specimens under ultraviolet light. To evaluate the effect of pine cone size on species richness, the Kruskal–Wallis test was conducted, and species composition among cones sizes was compared using multivariate analysis. A total of 48 taxa were recorded on cones, including 41 lichens and 7 bryophytes. A total of 39 species were found on very large cones, 37 species on large cones, 35 species on medium cones, and 24 species on small cones. This is comparable to the diversity found in epiphytic communities of pine plantations. Species composition was influenced by pine cone size, differing from small in comparison with very large ones. The PERMANOVA analyses revealed that lichen and bryophyte composition varied significantly among the pine cone categories, explaining 21% of the variance. Very large cones with specific characteristics harbored different communities than those on small pine cones. The presence of lichen and bryophyte species on the pine cones from managed Ecuadorian P. patula plantations may serve as refugia for the conservation of biodiversity. Pine cones and their scales (which range from 102 to 210 per cone) may facilitate colonization of new areas by dispersal agents such as birds and rodents. The scales often harbor lichen and bryophyte propagules as well as intact thalli, which can be effectively dispersed, when the cones are moved. The prolonged presence of pine cones in the environment further enhances their role as possible dispersal substrates over extended periods. To our knowledge, this is the first study worldwide to examine pine cones as substrates for lichens and bryophytes, providing novel insights into their potential role as microhabitats within P. patula plantations and forest landscapes across both temperate and tropical zones. Mycosis is caused by, among other factors, filamentous fungi, ubiquitous molds belonging to Aspergillus spp. which are often opportunistic pathogens. Over 100 species of Aspergillus have been described. The most common species responsible for diseases in humans and animals are Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger, with Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus clavatus being somewhat rarer. Aspergillus causes a range of diseases, from localized colonization and hypersensitivity reactions, through chronic necrotizing infections, to rapidly progressing angioinvasion and dissemination, leading to death. Testicular mycosis is extremely rarely described in both humans and animals. No studies in the literature report a simultaneous occurrence of testicular tumors and fungal infection of the organ, so the aim of this paper was to describe, for the first time, a case of two independent testicular tumors coexisting with testicular mycosis. A histopathological examination was performed on the left testicle of a male dog, specifically a mixed-breed dog resembling a husky weighing 22 kg and with an age of 8 years. Bilateral orchidectomy was performed for medical reasons due to the altered outline of the left testicle, leading to scrotal deformation. The dog did not show any clinical signs of illness, and the testicles were not painful. The right testicle, according to the operating veterinarian, showed no macroscopic changes, so histopathological verification was not performed. Microscopic imaging of the changes clearly indicated the coexistence of a tumor process involving Leydig cells (Leydigoma, interstitial cell tumor, ICT), Sertoli cells (Sertolioma), and fungal infection of the testis. The case suggests the possibility of the coexistence of tumor processes, which may have impaired local immune response of the tissue, with an infectious, in this case fungal, inflammatory process. Based on the literature, this paper is the first report on the occurrence of two independent histotype testicular tumors and their associated mycosis. Full article

Background/Objectives: We studied the possible protective effect of dietary curcumin in curry meals against cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia in a population-based Singapore Longitudinal Ageing cohort study. Methods: Baseline curry consumption frequency was categorized as five categories ranging from ‘never or rarely’ to ‘daily’. Among 2920 participants (mean age 65.5 ± SD 7.1 years) free of stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or traumatic brain injury at baseline, cognitive decline (MMSE drop ≥2) was assessed at 3–5 years (mean 4.5) follow-up. Occurrence of incident MCI-dementia was assessed at follow-up among 2446 participants without neurocognitive disorder at baseline. Results: A decreasing linear trend was observed between higher levels of curry consumption and cognitive decline (p = 0.037). The cumulative incidence of MCI-dementia decreased from 13.1% in those who never or rarely consumed curry to 3.6% in those who consumed curry daily (linear p < 0.001). The adjusted OR across levels of curry consumption exhibited a linear trend (p = 0.021) from OR = 0.61 (p < 0.05) for occasional consumption to OR = 0.21 (p < 0.001) for daily consumption. Conclusions: The intake of dietary curcumin through curry shows a dose-dependent reduction in incidence of cognitive decline and MCI-dementia in this Asian population of community-based elders. In the wake of the continuous development of the international strategic petroleum reserve system, the tonnage and quantity of oil tankers have been increasing. This trend has driven the expansion of offshore oil exploration and transportation, resulting in frequent incidents of ship oil spills. Catastrophic impacts have been exerted on the marine environment by these accidents, posing a serious threat to economic development and ecological security. Therefore, there is an urgent need for efficient and reliable methods to detect oil spills in a timely manner and minimize potential losses as much as possible. In response to this challenge, a marine radar oil film segmentation method based on feature fusion and the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is proposed in this study. Initially, the raw experimental data are preprocessed to obtain denoised radar images. Subsequently, grayscale adjustment and local contrast enhancement operations are carried out on the denoised images. Next, the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) features and Tamura features are extracted from the locally contrast-enhanced images. Then, the generalized least squares (GLS) method is employed to fuse the extracted texture features, yielding a new feature fusion map. Afterwards, the optimal processing threshold is determined to obtain effective wave regions by using the bimodal graph direct method. Finally, the ABC algorithm is utilized to segment the oil films. This method can provide data support for oil spill detection in marine radar images. Full article

The improvement of environmental conditions has become a priority for governments and legislators. New electrified mobility systems are increasingly present in our environment, as they enable the reduction of polluting emissions. Electric vehicles (EVs) are one of the fastest-growing alternatives to date, with exponential growth expected over the next few years. In this article, the various charging modes for EVs are explored, and the risks associated with charging technologies are analysed, particularly for charging systems in high-power DC with Lithium battery energy storage, given their long market deployment and characteristic behaviour. In particular, the Arc Flash (AF) risk present in high-power DC chargers will be studied, involving numerous simulations of the charging process. Subsequently, the Incident Energy (IE) analysis is carried out at different specific points of a commercial high-power ‘Mode 4’ charger. For this purpose, different analysis methods of recognised prestige, such as Doan, Paukert, or Stokes and Oppenlander, are applied, using the latest version of the ETAP® simulation tool version 22.5.0. This study focuses on quantifying the potential severity (consequences) of an AF event, assuming its occurrence, rather than performing a probabilistic risk assessment according to standard methodologies. The primary objective of this research is to comprehensively quantify the potential consequences for workers involved in the operation, maintenance, repair, and execution of tasks related to EV charging systems. This analysis makes it possible to provide safe working conditions and to choose the appropriate and necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for each type of operation. It is essential to develop this novel process to quantify the consequences of AF and to protect the end users of EV charging systems. Full article

Potential of Pumpkin Pulp Carotenoid Extract in the Prevention of Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity

Background/Objectives: Doxorubicin is a chemotherapeutic agent whose clinical use is limited by side effects (SEs). The most common SE is doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC), for which there is still no prevention. The hypothesis arises that active substances of natural origin could influence DIC prevention by affecting several pathways of DIC occurrence. Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were divided into six groups (control, NADES (C8:C10) solvent, pumpkin pulp extract, doxorubicin, NADES (C8:C10) solvent–doxorubicin, and pumpkin pulp extract–doxorubicin). During the experiment, parameters of general condition, body, and heart weight were observed. Heart function parameters were monitored by measuring the levels of serum NT-pro-BNP, CK-MB, and hsTnT. Tissue damage was evaluated by determining the doxorubicin damage score and the expression of anti-cardiac troponin I, anti-Nrf2, anti-Bcl-2, anti-caspase-3, anti-COX2, and anti-Ki67 antibodies. Results: Doxorubicin administration led to impaired general condition of animals and increased the levels of NT-proBNP, CK-MB, hsTnT, and myocardium tissue damage of medium grade. Its administration induced apoptosis (as evidenced by elevated Casp3), reduced antiapoptotic Bcl-2 and troponin I expression in cardiomyocytes. Reduced Nrf2 expression due to doxorubicin administration was restored when pumpkin pulp extract containing carotenoids was coadministered, which led to the normalization of Casp3, Bcl-2, and troponin I expression. Consequently, the general condition and body weight were better in animals treated with both doxorubicin and the other treatment compared to those treated with doxorubicin alone. Conclusions: The results of this study strongly suggest that pumpkin pulp extract containing carotenoids has a cardioprotective effect, possibly by regulating the Nrf2 pathway. Full article

DNA Transfer Between Items Within an Evidence Package

Background/Objectives: Advancements in DNA profiling have made it possible to retrieve intact DNA profiles from increasingly minute biological samples. This increased sensitivity in DNA detection has highlighted crucial considerations to be made when handling and packing items from the crime scene to minimize potential contamination from either direct or indirect transfer of DNA. To investigate potential DNA transfer between items stored within the same evidence package, we conducted a simulation study with items commonly encountered during forensic casework. Methods: Participants were grouped in pairs, each of them handling the same type of item to simulate the activity conducted at the crime scene. The items were then collected from each pair of participants and stored in the same evidence package for 4 to 5 days. To evaluate the basal DNA transfer between items within the same package, the packed items were not subjected to friction, force, or long-distance movement in this study. Results: We have observed the occurrence of DNA transfer on 39% of the studied items inside the package, which changed the source attribution of the DNA profiles for 10% of the recovered samples. Our results showed that the types of items were associated with the number of transferred alleles and the amount of DNA recovered, while no association was found between the number of transferred alleles and the amount of DNA on the studied items. Conclusions: Taken together, the results from this study reiterate the importance of packing each item from the crime scene separately, especially when packing items together may impact the interpretation of source attribution. The Review on Adverse Effects of Energy Drinks and Their Potential Drug Interactions

Background: Energy drinks (EDs) are non-alcoholic, functional beverages sold worldwide in more than 165 countries. These products are very popular and often consumed by children, teenagers, and young adults to improve physical performance, reduce drowsiness, and improve memory and concentration with increased intellectual effort. However, their consumption is associated with an increased risk of various health consequences. Objectives: The purpose of this non-systematic review was to discuss the components of EDs and their effects, summarize the AEs reported in the literature associated with the consumption of EDs, and briefly characterize the possible ED-related drug interactions. Methods: Scientific evidence was extracted by searching the databases PubMed and Google Scholar. In addition, the reference lists of the retrieved papers were reviewed and cross-referenced to reveal additional relevant scientific evidence. Results: The most common ingredients in EDs are caffeine, taurine, glucuronolactone, B vitamins, the vitamin-like compound inositol, and sweeteners (sugar, fructose, glucose–fructose syrup or artificial sweeteners). Although it is difficult to conclusively prove a cause-and-effect relationship between the consumption of EDs and the observed pathophysiological abnormalities, most scientific evidence (mostly clinical case reports) indicates that both occasional and especially chronic use of EDs is associated with the occurrence of numerous adverse effects (AEs). Among these, the best documented AEs are those on the cardiovascular system. It should also be noted that the components of EDs (primarily caffeine) may have drug interactions; therefore, EDs may be an important factor influencing the safety of pharmacotherapy in patients consuming EDs. Conclusions: Consuming energy drinks lead to various health problems and may interfere with pharmacotherapy due to the potential development of drug interactions. Due to the widespread availability of EDs, their suggestive advertising aimed at the youngest customers, and ambiguous regulations, new legislative policies are required to limit the widespread consumption of such products and their negative health effects. Zoonotic opportunistic enteric protozoa represent a significant global health threat to immunocompromised populations, especially individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Despite China’s severe HIV burden, molecular epidemiological data on enteric protozoa remain limited in this population. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium species, Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi among 150 AIDS patients with severe immunodeficiency in Wuhan city, Hubei Province, China. The overall test-positive rate was 5.33% (8/150), comprising Cryptosporidium species (including C. hominis, C. parvum, and C. meleagridis) in 2.00% (3/150) and G. duodenalis (including assemblage A, B, and E) in 3.33% (5/150); E. bieneusi was not detected. Notably, this study reports the first identification of the C. parvum subtype IIcA5G3 in humans in China, certainly indicating possible cross-border transmission. Furthermore, the detection of C. meleagridis IIIbA22G1R1c provided additional molecular evidence for chicken-to-human transmission. The finding of G. duodenalis assemblage E highlights the underrecognized zoonotic spillover risks to immunocompromised populations. These findings emphasize the diversity of infectious reservoirs, and the need for enhanced national molecular surveillance of these neglected zoonotic enteric protozoa, alongside targeted interventions for vulnerable populations. Furthermore, new treatment strategies for OSCC are needed to improve existing therapeutic options. Bioactive compounds found in medicinal plants could be used to support these strategies. It is already known that they have an increased potential for action and a safety profile; therefore, they could improve the therapeutic effect of classical chemotherapeutic agents in combination therapies. Methodology: This research was based on an extensive review of recently published studies in scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science). The selection criteria were based on experimental protocols investigating molecular mechanisms, synergistic actions with conventional anticancer agents, and novel formulation possibilities (e.g., nanoemulsions and mucoadhesive films) for the targeted delivery of bioactive compounds in OSCC. Particular attention was given to in vitro, in vivo, translational, and clinical studies that have proven therapeutic relevance. Results: Recent discoveries regarding the effect of bioactive compounds in the treatment of oral cancer were analyzed, with a view to integrating them into oncological practice for increasing therapeutic efficacy and reducing the occurrence of adverse reactions and treatment resistance. Conclusions: Significant progress has been achieved in this review, allowing us to appreciate that the valorization of these bioactive compounds is emerging. Full article

Verifying the Effects of the Grey Level Co-Occurrence Matrix and Topographic–Hydrologic Features on Automatic Gully Extraction in Dexiang Town, Bayan County, China

Erosion gullies can reduce arable land area and decrease agricultural machinery efficiency; therefore, automatic gully extraction on a regional scale should be one of the preconditions of gully control and land management. The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of the grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and topographic–hydrologic features on automatic gully extraction and guide future practices in adjacent regions. To accomplish this, GaoFen-2 (GF-2) satellite imagery and high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) data were first collected. The GLCM and topographic–hydrologic features were generated, and then, a gully label dataset was built via visual interpretation. Second, the study area was divided into training, testing, and validation areas, and four practices using different feature combinations were conducted. The DeepLabV3+ and ResNet50 architectures were applied to train five models in each practice. Thirdly, the trainset gully intersection over union (IOU), test set gully IOU, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), area under the curve (AUC), user’s accuracy, producer’s accuracy, Kappa coefficient, and gully IOU in the validation area were used to assess the performance of the models in each practice. The results show that the validated gully IOU was 0.4299 (±0.0082) when only the red (R), green (G), blue (B), and near-infrared (NIR) bands were applied, and solely combining the topographic–hydrologic features with the RGB and NIR bands significantly improved the performance of the models, which boosted the validated gully IOU to 0.4796 (±0.0146). Nevertheless, solely combining GLCM features with RGB and NIR bands decreased the accuracy, which resulted in the lowest validated gully IOU of 0.3755 (±0.0229). Finally, by employing the full set of RGB and NIR bands, the GLCM and topographic–hydrologic features obtained a validated gully IOU of 0.4762 (±0.0163) and tended to show an equivalent improvement with the combination of topographic–hydrologic features and RGB and NIR bands. A preliminary explanation is that the GLCM captures the local textures of gullies and their backgrounds, and thus introduces ambiguity and noise into the convolutional neural network (CNN). Therefore, the GLCM tends to provide no benefit to automatic gully extraction with CNN-type algorithms, while topographic–hydrologic features, which are also original drivers of gullies, help determine the possible presence of water-origin gullies when optical bands fail to tell the difference between a gully and its confusing background. Objectives: The relationship between oral health and general health of geriatric in-hospital patients (GIH) who are poly-morbid and edentulous is currently unclear. This study determined the relationship between oral health and general health, and further implications and recommendations were derived. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 81 GIH patients with impairment of oral state and masticatory function and need for immediate prosthetic treatment. The number of medical diagnoses, particularly main diagnoses of being hospitalized, comorbid diagnoses and the dental/oral state, were evaluated. Laboratory data of vitamin D3 and albumin concentrations were measured. Intraoral risk factors (IRF) affecting the masticatory function were intraoral inflammation, mucogingival impairment (MGI) and severe bone crest atrophy (SBCA). Masticatory function was evaluated by DMF*-T Index (number of destroyed/diseased, missing teeth and artificial fabrication), Eichner Index and Scores. The clinical relevance was surveyed by significance and effect size calculations. Results: In GIH, the number of medical diagnoses correlated significantly with the occurrence of IRFs. SBCA was the most affecting IRF, as measured by Eichner Index at baseline (p = 0.001). Single main diagnoses CNS and gastro-intestinal disease (GID) correlated with both deficiency of vitamin D3 levels (p = 0.011; p = 0.028) and hypoalbuminemia (p = 0.013; p = 0.023). Single comorbid diagnoses significantly correlated with both vitamin D3 deficiency and hypoalbuminemia (CVD (p = 0.031); DM (p = 0.042). Hypoalbuminemia was further found to be correlated with the sum of comorbid diagnoses (p = 0.033). Conclusions: GIH patients suffered from general and dental poly-morbidity. The prevalence of diseases was higher due to SBCA and impaired masticatory function. Deficiency of vitamin D3 and hypoalbuminemia were possible malnutrition markers. Full article

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), such as myocardial hypertrophy, heart failure, atherosclerosis, and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, are among the major threats to human health worldwide. Post-translational modifications alter the function of proteins through dynamic chemical modification after synthesis. This mechanism not only plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis and plays a crucial role in maintaining normal cardiovascular function, but is also closely related to the pathological state of various diseases. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) play an important role in the epigenetic regulation of gene expression, and play important roles in post-translational modification by catalyzing the deacetylation of key lysine residues in nucleosomal histones, which are closely associated with the occurrence and development of cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies indicate that HDAC inhibitors (HDACis) may represent a new class of drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases by influencing post-translational modifications. In this review, we systematically summarize the mechanism of action of HDACs and HDACis in post-translational modifications related to common cardiovascular diseases, providing new ideas for the treatment of CVD, and explore possible future research directions on the relationship between HDAC and HDACi in post-translational modifications and cardiovascular diseases. The quality of a grid-injected current in LCL-type grid-connected inverters (GCI) degrades under ultra-weak grid conditions, posing serious challenges to the stability of the GCI system. For this purpose, the sliding mode control (SMC) approach has been utilized to integrate DC energy seamlessly into the grid. The control performance of a GCI equipped with an LCL filter is greatly reduced when it is operating in a power grid with varying impedance and fluctuating grid voltages, which may result in poor current quality and possible instability in the system. A non-singular double integral terminal sliding mode (DIT-SMC) control is presented in this paper for a three-phase GCI with an LCL filter. The proposed method is presented in the α, β frame of reference without adopting an active or passive damping approach, reducing the computational burden. MATLAB/Simulink Version R2023b is leveraged to simulate the mathematical model of the proposed control system. The capability of the DIT-SMC method is validated through the OPAL-RT hardware-in-loop (HIL) platform. The effectiveness of the proposed method is first compared with SMC and integral terminal SMC, and then the DIT-SMC method is rigorously analyzed under resonance frequency events, grid impedance variation, and grid voltage distortions. It is demonstrated by the experimental results that the proposed control is highly effective in delivering a high-quality current into the grid, in spite of the simultaneous occurrence of power grid impedance variations in 6 mH and large voltage distortions.
