Inter-turn short-circuit faults in induction motors might lead to overheating, torque imbalances, and eventual motor failure. This paper presents a fault detection framework for accurately identifying ITSC faults under various operating conditions. The proposed method integrates negative-sequence current analysis utilizing wavelet-based filtering and symmetrical component decomposition. A fault detection index to effectively monitor motor health and detect faults is presented. Moreover, the fault location is determined by phase angles of fundamental components of negative-sequence currents. Experimental validations were carried out for an inverter-fed induction motor under variable speed and load cases. These showed that the proposed approach has high sensitivity to early-stage inter-turn short circuits. This makes the framework highly suitable for real-time condition monitoring and predictive maintenance in inverter-fed motor systems, thereby improving system reliability and minimizing unplanned downtime. This paper presents an electromechanical coupling model integrating an equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model of a dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (DTP-PMSM) with the dynamic model of a helical planetary gear transmission system. Using this model, this study analyzes the dynamic characteristics of an electric drive system, specifically motor phase current, electromagnetic torque, and gear meshing force, under self-fault-tolerant control strategies. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the self-fault-tolerant control strategy enables rapid fault tolerance during open-phase faults, significantly reducing system fault recovery time. Meanwhile, compared to the open-phase faults conditions, the self-fault-tolerant control effectively suppresses most harmonic components within the system; only the second harmonic amplitude of the electromagnetic torque exhibited an increase. This harmonic disturbance propagates to the gear system through electromechanical coupling, synchronously amplifying the second harmonic amplitude in the gear system’s vibration response. This study demonstrates that self-fault-tolerant control strategies significantly enhance the dynamic response performance of the electric drive system under open-phase faults conditions. Furthermore, this study also investigates the electromechanical coupling mechanism through which harmonics generated by this strategy affect the gear system’s dynamic response, providing theoretical support for co-optimization electromechanical coupling design and fault-tolerant control in high-reliability electric drive transmission systems. Concurrent cognitive tasks, such as avoiding visual, auditory, chemical, and electrical hazards, and concurrent motor tasks, such as load carriage, are prevalent in ergonomic settings. Trips are extremely common in the workplace, leading to fatal and non-fatal fall-related injuries. Intrinsic factors, such as attention, fatigue, and anticipation, as well as extrinsic factors, including tasks at hand, affect trip recovery responses. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ankle joint kinematics in unexpected and expected trip responses during single-tasking (ST), dual-tasking (DT), and triple-tasking (TT), before and after a physically fatiguing protocol among young, healthy adults. Methods: Twenty volunteers’ (10 females, one left leg dominant, age 20.35 ± 1.04 years, height 174.83 ± 9.03 cm, mass 73.88 ± 15.55 kg) ankle joint kinematics were assessed using 3D motion capture system during unperturbed gait (NG), unexpected trip (UT), and expected trip (ET), during single-tasking (ST), cognitive dual-tasking (CDT), motor dual-tasking (MDT), and triple-tasking (TT), under both PRE and POST fatigue conditions. Results: Greater dorsiflexion angles were observed during UT compared to NG, MDT compared to ST, and TT compared to ST. Significantly greater plantar flexion angles were observed during ET compared to NG and during POST compared to PRE. Conclusions: Greater dorsiflexion angles during dual- and triple-tasking suggest that divided attention affects trip recovery. Greater plantar flexion angles following fatigue are likely an anticipatory mechanism due to altered muscle activity and increased postural control demands. Full article

Neuromuscular hip dysplasia (NHD) is a common deformity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Although some predictive factors of NHD are known, the prediction of NHD is in its infancy. We present a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) designed to calculate the probability of developing NHD in children with CP. The system utilizes an ensemble of three machine learning (ML) algorithms: Neural Network (NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Logistic Regression (LR). The development and evaluation of the CDSS followed the DECIDE-AI guidelines for AI-driven clinical decision support tools. The ensemble was trained on a data series from 182 subjects. Inclusion criteria were age between 12 and 18 years and diagnosis of CP from two specialized units. Clinical and functional data were collected prospectively between 2005 and 2023, and then analyzed in a cross-sectional study. Accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) were calculated for each method. Best logistic regression scores highlighted history of previous orthopedic surgery (p = 0.001), poor motor function (p = 0.004), truncal tone disorder (p = 0.008), scoliosis (p = 0.031), number of affected limbs (p = 0.05), and epilepsy (p = 0.05) as predictors of NHD. Both accuracy and AUROC were highest for NN, 83.7% and 0.92, respectively. The novelty of this study lies in the development of an efficient Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) prototype, specifically designed to predict future outcomes of neuromuscular hip dysplasia (NHD) in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) using clinical data. The proposed system, PredictMed-CDSS, demonstrated strong predictive performance for estimating the probability of NHD development in children with CP, with the highest accuracy achieved using neural networks (NN). PredictMed-CDSS has the potential to assist clinicians in anticipating the need for early interventions and preventive strategies in the management of NHD among CP patients. Full article

This paper presents the design and implementation of a SLAM-based online mapping and autonomous trajectory execution system for the Nimbulus-e, a concept vehicle designed for agile maneuvering in confined spaces. The Nimbulus-e uses individual steer-by-wire corner modules with in-wheel motors at all four corners. The associated eight joint variables serve as control inputs, allowing precise trajectory following. These control inputs can be derived from the vehicle’s trajectory using nonholonomic constraints. A LiDAR sensor is used to map the environment and detect obstacles. The system processes LiDAR data in real time, continuously updating the environment map and enabling localization within the environment. The inclusion of vehicle odometry data significantly reduces computation time and improves accuracy compared to a purely visual approach. The A* and Hybrid A* algorithms are used for trajectory planning and optimization, ensuring smooth vehicle movement. The implementation is validated through both full vehicle simulations using an ADAMS Car—MATLABco-simulation and a scaled physical prototype, demonstrating the effectiveness of the system in navigating complex environments. This work contributes to the field of autonomous systems by demonstrating the potential of combining advanced sensor technologies with innovative control algorithms to achieve reliable and efficient navigation. Future developments will focus on improving the robustness of the system by implementing a robust closed-loop controller and exploring additional applications in dense urban traffic and agricultural operations. Glial Cells and Aging: From the CNS to the Cerebellum

Among brain regions, the cerebellum (CBL) has traditionally been associated with motor control. However, increasing evidence from connectomics and functional imaging has expanded this view, revealing its involvement in a wide range of cognitive and integrative processes. Despite this emerging relevance, the CBL has received comparatively less attention in aging research, which has focused mainly on other central nervous system (CNS) regions such as the neocortex and hippocampus. This review synthesizes the current evidence on glial cell aging across the CNS, emphasizing how cerebellar circuits follow distinct trajectories in terms of cellular remodeling, transcriptional reprogramming, and structural vulnerability. Recent findings highlight that cerebellar astrocytes and microglia exhibit specific signatures related to aging compared to their cortical counterpart, including moderate reactivity, selective immune response, and spatial reorganization. Cerebellar white matter (WM) undergoes structural alteration, suggesting that oligodendroglial cells may undergo region-specific alterations, particularly within WM tracts, although these aspects remain underexplored. Despite the presence of glial remodeling, the CBL maintains a notable degree of structural and functional integrity during aging. This resilience may be the result of the CBL’s ability to maintain synaptic adaptability and homeostatic balance, supported by its highly organized and compartmentalized architecture. A better understanding of the dynamics of cerebellar glial cells in aging may provide new insight into the mechanisms of brain maintenance and identify potential biomarkers for healthy brain aging. As the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to increase, the need for effective and efficient driveline lubricants and dielectric coolants has become crucial. Commercially used mineral oils or synthetic ester-based coolants, despite performing satisfactorily, are not environmentally friendly. The fatty esters of vegetable oils, after overcoming their shortcomings (like poor oxidative stability, higher viscosity, and pour point) through chemical modification, have recently been used as potential dielectric coolants in transformers. The benefits of natural esters, including a higher flash point, breakdown voltage, dielectric character, thermal conductivity, and most importantly, readily biodegradable nature, have made them a suitable and sustainable substitute for traditional coolants in electric transformers. Based on their excellent performance in transformers, research on their application as dielectric immersion coolants in modern EVs has been emerging in recent years. This review primarily highlights the beneficial aspects of natural esters performing dual functions—cooling as well as lubricating, which is necessary for “wet” e-motors in EVs—through a comparative study with the commercially used mineral and synthetic coolants. The adoption of natural fatty esters of vegetable oils as an immersion cooling fluid is a significant sustainable step for the battery thermal management system (BTMS) of modern EVs considering environmental safety protocols. Continued research and development are necessary to overcome the ongoing challenges and optimize esters for widespread use in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market. Full article

Recent Advances in Nanoparticle and Nanocomposite-Based Photodynamic Therapy for Cervical Cancer: A Review

Cervical cancer represents a significant global health challenge. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) appears to be a promising, minimally invasive alternative to standard treatments. However, the clinical efficacy of PDT is sometimes limited by the low solubility and aggregation of photosensitizers, their non-selective distribution in the body, hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment, and limited light penetration. Recent advances in nanoparticle and nanocomposite platforms have addressed these challenges by integrating multiple functional components into a single delivery system. By encapsulating or conjugating photosensitizers in biodegradable matrices, such as mesoporous silica, organometallic structures and core–shell construct nanocarriers increase stability in water and extend circulation time, enabling both passive and active targeting through ligand decoration. Up-conversion and dual-wavelength responsive cores facilitate deep light conversion in tissues, while simultaneous delivery of hypoxia-modulating agents alleviates oxygen deprivation to sustain reactive oxygen species generation. Controllable “motor-cargo” constructs and surface modifications improve intratumoral diffusion, while aggregation-induced emission dyes and plasmonic elements support real-time imaging and quantitative monitoring of therapeutic response. Together, these multifunctional nanosystems have demonstrated potent cytotoxicity in vitro and significant tumor suppression in vivo in mouse models of cervical cancer. Combining targeted delivery, controlled release, hypoxia mitigation, and image guidance, engineered nanoparticles provide a versatile and powerful platform to overcome the current limitations of PDT and pave the way toward more effective, patient-specific treatments for cervical malignancies. Our review of the literature summarizes studies on nanoparticles and nanocomposites used in PDT monotherapy for cervical cancer, published between 2023 and July 2025. Full article

Kinesthetic motor imagery (KMI), the mental rehearsal of a motor task without its actual performance, constitutes one of the most common techniques used for brain–computer interface (BCI) control for movement-related tasks. The effect of neural injury on motor cortical activity during execution and imagery remains under investigation in terms of activations, processing of motor onset, and BCI control. The current work aims to conduct a post hoc investigation of the event-related potential (ERP)-based processing of KMI during BCI control of anthropomorphic robotic arms by spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and healthy control participants in a completed clinical trial. For this purpose, we analyzed 14-channel electroencephalography (EEG) data from 10 patients with cervical SCI and 8 healthy individuals, recorded through Emotiv EPOC BCI, as the participants attempted to move anthropomorphic robotic arms using KMI. EEG data were pre-processed by band-pass filtering (8–30 Hz) and independent component analysis (ICA). ERPs were calculated at the sensor space, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine potential differences between groups. Our results showed no statistically significant differences between SCI patients and healthy control groups regarding mean amplitude and latency (p < 0.05) across the recorded channels at various time points during stimulus presentation. Notably, no significant differences were observed in ERP components, except for the P200 component at the T8 channel. These findings suggest that brain circuits associated with motor planning and sensorimotor processes are not disrupted due to anatomical damage following SCI. The temporal dynamics of motor-related areas—particularly in channels like F3, FC5, and F7—indicate that essential motor imagery (MI) circuits remain functional. Limitations include the relatively small sample size that may hamper the generalization of our findings, the sensor-space analysis that restricts anatomical specificity and neurophysiological interpretations, and the use of a low-density EEG headset, lacking coverage over key motor regions. Non-invasive EEG-based BCI systems for motor rehabilitation in SCI patients could effectively leverage intact neural circuits to promote neuroplasticity and facilitate motor recovery. Future work should include validation against larger, longitudinal, high-density, source-space EEG datasets. Full article

The growing need for high-efficiency and reliable propulsion systems in naval applications, particularly within the evolving landscape of submarine warfare, has led to an increased interest in multiphase Permanent Magnet AC motors. This study presents a modelling and simulation approach for a 3MW, seventeen-phase Permanent Magnet AC motor designed for submarine propulsion, integrating an AI-based drive control system. Despite the advantages of multiphase motors, such as higher power density and enhanced fault tolerance, significant challenges remain in achieving precise torque and variable speed, especially for externally mounted motors operating under deep-sea conditions. Existing control strategies often struggle with the inherent nonlinearities, unmodelled dynamics, and extreme environmental variations (e.g., pressure, temperature affecting oil viscosity and motor parameters) characteristic of such demanding deep-sea applications, leading to suboptimal performance and compromised reliability. Addressing this gap, this research investigates advanced control methodologies to enhance the performance of such motors. A MATLAB/Simulink framework was developed to model the motor, whose drive system leverages an AI-optimised dual fuzzy-PID controller refined using the Harmony Search Algorithm. Additionally, a combination of Indirect Field-Oriented Control (IFOC) and Space Vector PWM strategies are implemented to optimise inverter switching sequences for precise output modulation. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements in torque response and control accuracy, validating the efficacy of the proposed system. The results highlight the role of AI-based propulsion systems in revolutionising submarine manoeuvrability and energy efficiency. In particular, during a test case involving a speed transition from 75 RPM to 900 RPM, the proposed AI-based controller achieves a near-zero overshoot compared to an initial control scheme that exhibits 75.89% overshoot. Model-based sensorless control of interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) typically employs an estimation observer with embedded position information, followed by a position extraction process. Although a type-2 phase-locked loop (PLL) is widely adopted for position and speed extraction, it suffers from steady-state tracking errors under variable-speed operation, leading to torque bias in IPMSM torque control. To mitigate this issue, this paper first proposes an adaptive bandpass full-order observer in the stationary reference frame. Subsequently, a Kalman filter (KF)-based compensation strategy is introduced for the PLL to eliminate tracking errors while maintaining system stability. Experimental validation on a 300 kW platform confirms the effectiveness of the proposed sensorless torque control algorithm, demonstrating significant reductions in position error and torque fluctuations during acceleration and deceleration. The efficiency of electric motors is highly dependent on their operating temperature, with lower temperatures contributing to enhanced performance, reliability, and extended service life. This study presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art cooling technologies and evaluates their impact on the thermal behavior of a commercial motor–generator system in high-demand applications. A baseline model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was developed using MotorCAD 2023® software, which was supported by reverse engineering techniques to accurately replicate the motor’s physical and thermal characteristics. Subsequently, multiple cooling strategies were simulated under consistent operating conditions to assess their effectiveness. These strategies include conventional axial water jackets as well as advanced oil-based methods such as shaft cooling and direct oil spray to the windings. The integration of these systems in hybrid configurations was also explored to maximize thermal efficiency. Simulation results reveal that hybrid cooling significantly reduces the temperature of critical components such as stator windings and permanent magnets. This reduction in thermal stress improves current efficiency, power output, and torque capacity, enabling reliable motor operation across a broader range of speeds and under sustained high-load conditions. The study of vibration characteristics and suppression methods in integrated electric drive systems of electric vehicles is of critical importance. To investigate these characteristics, both current harmonics within the motor and nonlinear factors within the drivetrain were considered. A 17-degree-of-freedom nonlinear torsional–planar dynamic model was developed, with electromagnetic torque and output speed as coupling terms. The model’s accuracy was experimentally validated, and the system’s dynamic responses were analyzed under different working conditions. To mitigate vibrations caused by torque ripple, a coordinated control strategy was proposed, combining a quasi-proportional multi-resonant (QPMR) controller and a full-frequency harmonic controller (FFHC). The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy effectively suppresses multi-order current harmonics in the driving motor, reduces torque ripple by 45.1%, and enhances transmission stability. In addition, the proposed electromechanical coupling model provides valuable guidance for the analysis of integrated electric drive systems. Full article

To enhance the reliability of electric propulsion in electric aircraft and address power interruptions caused by current sensor failures, this study proposes a current sensorless fault-tolerant control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. First, a hierarchical architecture is constructed to fuse multi-phase electrical signals in the fault diagnosis layer (sliding mode observer). A symbolic function for the reaching law observer is designed based on Lyapunov theory, in order to generate current predictions for fault diagnosis. Second, when a fault occurs, the system switches to the LSTM reconstruction layer. Finally, gating units are used to model nonlinear dynamics to achieve direct mapping of speed/position to phase current. Verification using a physical prototype shows that the proposed method can complete mode switching within 10 ms after a sensor failure, which is 80% faster than EKF, and its speed error is less than 2.5%, fully meeting the high speed error requirements of electric aircraft propulsion systems (i.e., ≤3%). The current reconstruction RMSE is reduced by more than 50% compared with that of the EKF, which ensures continuous and reliable control while maintaining the stable operation of the motor and realizing rapid switching. The intelligent algorithm and sliding mode control fusion strategy meet the requirements of high real-time performance and provide a highly reliable fault-tolerant scheme for electric aircraft propulsion. The exponential growth of autonomous systems demands robust security mechanisms that can operate within the extreme constraints of real-time embedded environments. This paper introduces SMART DShot, a groundbreaking machine learning-enhanced framework that transforms the security landscape of unmanned aerial vehicle motor control systems through seamless integration of adaptive timing correction and real-time anomaly detection within Digital Shot (DShot) communication protocols. Our approach addresses critical vulnerabilities in Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) interfaces by deploying four synergistic algorithms—Kalman Filter Timing Correction (KFTC), Recursive Least Squares Timing Correction (RLSTC), Fuzzy Logic Timing Correction (FLTC), and Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction (HATC)—each optimized for specific error characteristics and attack scenarios. Through comprehensive evaluation encompassing 32,000 Monte Carlo test iterations (500 per scenario × 16 scenarios × 4 algorithms) across 16 distinct operational scenarios and PolarFire SoC Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation, we demonstrate exceptional performance with 88.3% attack detection rate, only 2.3% false positive incidence, and substantial vulnerability mitigation reducing Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) severity from High (7.3) to Low (3.1). Hardware validation on PolarFire SoC confirms practical viability with minimal resource overhead (2.16% Look-Up Table utilization, 16.57 mW per channel) and deterministic sub-10 microsecond execution latency. The Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction algorithm achieves 31.01% success rate (95% CI: [30.2%, 31.8%]), representing a 26.5% improvement over baseline approaches through intelligent meta-learning-based algorithm selection. Statistical validation using Analysis of Variance confirms significant performance differences (F(3,1996) = 30.30, p < 0.001) with large effect sizes (Cohen’s d up to 4.57), where 64.6% of algorithm comparisons showed large practical significance. SMART DShot establishes a paradigmatic shift from reactive to proactive embedded security, demonstrating that sophisticated artificial intelligence can operate effectively within microsecond-scale real-time constraints while providing comprehensive protection against timing manipulation, de-synchronization, burst interference, replay attacks, coordinated multi-channel attacks, and firmware-level compromises. This work provides essential foundations for trustworthy autonomous systems across critical domains including aerospace, automotive, industrial automation, and cyber–physical infrastructure. These results conclusively demonstrate that ML-enhanced motor control systems can achieve both superior security (88.3% attack detection rate with 2.3% false positives) and operational performance (31.01% timing correction success rate, 26.5% improvement over baseline) simultaneously, establishing SMART DShot as a practical, deployable solution for next-generation autonomous systems.
